Breve reseña de vida y contribución del médico parasitólogo peruano César Gabriel Náquira Velarde

Las instituciones científicas y sus logros se construyen a partir de las personas y sus historias. En este caso, el Dr. César Náquira Velarde es una personalidad destacada en la salud pública del Perú, a la que contribuyó hasta días antes de su partida a los 85 años de edad. El Dr. Náquira participó activamente en la fundación del Instituto de Medicina Tropical Daniel A. Carrión de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos desde donde −a través de la investigación y docencia− ha formado médicos y especialistas en el campo de la parasitología y medicina tropical. Sin embargo, su mayor contribución y aporte fue en el estudio de la enfermedad de Chagas. También se desempeñó como funcionario público y decisor, pues fue jefe del Instituto Nacional de Salud y permanente asesor técnico del Ministerio de Salud del Perú, en los temas de su especialidad. Destacamos su rol como maestro para muchas generaciones de médicos y su autoridad como experto en el campo de la parasitología médica.

[Critical appraisal about control programs and elimination of leprosy in Peru, and its consequences for Peru and America]

A critical analysis of health control measures that historically took place in Peru to the present which has led Peru to officially consider leprosy as an "eliminated" public health problem. We will also discuss the validity of the status given the neglect of health surveillance, disbanded specialized control entities, health medical staff forgetting to account for leprosy in early stages, the presence of undiagnosed smear-positive leprosy in Lima and the undeniable hidden prevalence, suggest that there is a danger to the country and the region that a re-emergence of leprosy will occur, if relevant and appropriate sanitary measures are not taken.

[Colestasic toxic hepatitis caused by terbinafine: case report]

Trichophytic onychomycosis of the feet represents an important and serious medical problem. Until recent years, there was not cure for this unpleasant pathology. It is only at the beginning of the 50s, especially at the onset of the antimycotic systemic therapy that a cure is available offering high rate of clinical and mycological therapy. The purpose of this report is to better inform on the undesirable side-effects of antimycotic agents which are currently so largely disseminated. The case of a young patient is presented who was enjoying good health and who after 6 weeks of starting therapy with terbinafine on a doses of 1 pill of 250 mg a day, to treat a trichophytic onychomycosis in both feet, developed severe symptoms of toxic colostatic hepatitis duly corroborated after pertinent testing. Patient had a full recovery after a few months of having interrupted her therapy, apparently without any sequel. The literature in this regard has been revised and a close monitoring of the hepatic function is recommended prior and during treatment with this drug. The need to continue research to find an ideal antimycotic still not found is also recommended.

A network model of developmental gene hierarchy

A network model of development governing the whole temporal and spatial hierarchy of early embryogenesis and pattern formation in Drosophila is introduced. The network is related to a neural network model, with its units being developmental genes mostly connected by the genes' DNA-binding products. The developmental network's agreement with predictions regarding architecture and function of the neural network provides adequate grounds for an analogy between the two. The model is tested through computer simulations--predictions compare favorably with experimental observations. The model not only incorporates a program of control at gene level, but also makes a direct connection with current molecular studies throughout the whole hierarchy of the early embryogenesis of Drosophila.

Perforation of the stomach due to trichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11) ingestion

Accidental ingestion of trichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11) by a healthy adult male resulted in necrosis and multiple perforations of the stomach. The patient recovered after surgical intervention, the excision of necrotic tissue and the reestablishment of gastrointestinal continuity. The freezing action of Freon 11 is postulated as the cause of tissue necrosis.
