Anaerobic co-digestion of microalgal biomass, sugarcane vinasse, and residual glycerol from biodiesel using simplex-centroid mixture design: methane potential, synergic effect, and microbial diversity

Microalgal biomass (MB) is a promising feedstock for bioenergy production. Nonetheless, the cell recalcitrance and the low C/N ratio limit the methane yield during anaerobic digestion. As an alternative to overcome these challenges, MB co-digestion with different feedstocks has been proposed. Thus, this study evaluated the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of MB cultivated in wastewater with sugarcane vinasse (VIN) and residual glycerol from biodiesel production (GLY). Batch tests were conducted using augmented simplex-centroid mixture design to investigate the impact of AcoD on methane production (SMP), synergistic effects, and the influence on microbial community. When compared to MB digestion, 150 NmL CH4.g-1VS, binary and ternary AcoD achieved SMP increases from 120 to 337%. The combination of 16.7:16.7:66.7 (MB:VIN:GLY) showed the highest SMP for a ternary mixture (631 NmL CH4.g-1VS). Optimal synergies ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 and were primarily found for the MB:GLY AcoD. Acetoclastic Methanosaeta genus was predominant, regardless the combination between substrates. Despite the largest SMP obtained from the MB:GLY AcoD, other ternary mixtures were also highly synergetic and therefore had strong potential as a strategic renewable energy source.

Photocatalyzed hydrodecarboxylation of fatty acids: a prospective method to produce drop-in biofuels

A direct and practical method for photocatalyzed hydrodecarboxylation of fatty acids is reported herein. The catalytic system consists of a commercially available acridinium salt as the photocatalyst and thiophenol as the Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) co-catalyst. Results evidenced that Cn-1 alkanes were obtained in yields up to 77%. Furthermore, the protocol was employed for a complex mixture of fatty acids bio-derived from a real sample of licuri oil to obtain hydrocarbons in the range of C9-C17 with high selectivity and excellent conversion (>90%). This work provides a powerful strategy for producing drop-in biofuels under mild conditions. Finally, an energetic assessment of our proposed protocol (∼22.9 kW h) reveals the benefit of a sustainable production of renewable hydrocarbons.

Photocatalytic Hydrodecarboxylation of Fatty Acids for Drop-in Biofuels Production

A mild, practical, and environmentally friendly method for the hydrodecarboxylation of fatty acids using an acridine-based photoredox catalyst and thiophenol was developed. Cn-1 alkanes were synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 99 %) from C10-C18 saturated fatty acids under visible light irradiation (405 nm). The developed protocol was employed for a mixture of fatty acids obtained from the hydrolysis of Licuri oil, affording a mixture of C9-C17 hydrocarbons in quantitative yield, which demonstrates the potential application of the method to produce drop-in biofuels.

Electrochemical sensor based on carbon nanotube decorated with manganese oxide nanoparticles for naphthalene determination

In this work, an electrochemical sensor was developed for the determination of naphthalene (NaP) in well water samples, based on a glass carbon electrode (GCE) modified as a nanocomposite of manganese oxides (MnOx) and COOH-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The synthesis of MnOx nanoparticles was performed by the sol-gel method. The nanocomposite was obtained by mixing MnOx and MWCNT with the aid of ultrasound, followed by stirring for 24 h. Surface modification facilitated the electron transfer process through the MnOx/MWCNT/GCE composite, which was used as an electrochemical sensor. The sensor and its material were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Important parameters influencing electrochemical sensor performance (pH, composite ratios) were investigated and optimized. The MnOx/MWCNT/GCE sensor showed a wide linear range of 2.0-16.0 μM, a detection limit of 0.5 μM and a quantification limit of 1.8 μM, in addition to satisfactory repeatability (RSD of 7.8%) and stability (900 s) in the determination of NaP. The determination of NaP in a sample of water from a gas station well using the proposed sensor showed results with recovery between 98.1 and 103.3%. The results obtained suggest that the MnOx/MWCNT/GCE electrode has great potential for application in the detection of NaP in well water.

A novel intensified approach for treating produced water from oil extraction using a multi-tube type falling-film distillation column equipped with a biphasic thermosiphon: a promising feasibility study

This study has the novel aim of experimentally examining the efficiency of a pilot-scale treatment plant, composed of a multi-tube type falling-film distillation column equipped with a biphasic thermosiphon, for treating a real sample of high-salinity produced water (electrical conductivity of 20,700 μS cm-1). It investigates the influence of operational parameters, including feed temperature and steam chamber temperature of the biphasic thermosiphon, on distillate flow rate and reduction of conductivity. All experimental conditions tested achieved a reduction greater than 98% in terms of electrical conductivity. The production of treated water increased with increasing feed temperature; the flow rate increased from 20.8 L h-1 to 28.2 L h-1 as the feed temperature was increased from 80 °C to 90 °C, when the steam chamber temperature was fixed at 119 °C. Within the temperature range of the steam chamber, the specific energy consumption during the treatment process, with respect to the biphasic thermosiphon, remained practically unchanged between 0.58 kWh L-1 and 0.60 kWh L-1, when the feed temperature was 90 °C. The results proved the potential of the falling-film distillation technology assisted by heat pipes to be a promising proposal for removing salinity from produced water from oil extraction operations.

Brazilian industrial yeasts show high fermentative performance in high solids content for corn ethanol process

An imminent change in the world energy matrix makes it necessary to increase the production of renewable fuels. The United States and Brazil are the world's largest producers, but their production methods are very different, using different raw materials, ground corn and sugarcane juice, respectively. In recent years, strong investments have been made to expand the use of corn in Brazilian ethanol production. The combination of the sugar cane and corn ethanol industries has generated innovations in the sector, such as the "flex" mills, which are traditional sugar cane mills adapted to produce corn ethanol in the sugar cane off-season. Brazil has a portfolio of robust industrial yeasts for sugarcane ethanol production, naturally evolved and selected over the past 50 years. In this work, we analyze for the first time the performance of Brazilian industrial strains (BG-1, CAT-1, PE-2 and SA-1, widely used in sugarcane ethanol production) in corn ethanol production using different stress conditions. Ethanol Red yeast, traditionally used in corn ethanol plants around the world, was used as a control. In terms of tolerance to temperature (35 °C), strains BG-1 and SA-1 stood out. In fermentations with high solids concentration (35%), strain BG-1 reached ethanol contents higher than 19% w/v and had a productivity gain of 5.8% compared to fermentation at 30%. This was the first time that these industrial strains were evaluated using the high solids concentration of 35% and the results point to ways to improve the corn ethanol production process.

Bibliometric analysis of global research progress on electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants

As a result of anthropogenic action, an increasing amount of toxic organic compounds has been released into the environment. These pollutants have adverse effects on human health and wildlife, which has motivated the development of different types of technologies for the treatment of effluents and contaminated environments. The electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants has attracted the interest of research centers around the world for its environmental compatibility, high efficiency, and affordable cost. In the present study, a bibliometric analysis was performed using the Web of Science database in order to assess the progress of publications related to electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants between the years 2001 and 2021. The data retrieved showed a significant increase in publications related to the topic in the last 20 years. Electrochimica Acta was the magazine responsible for the largest number of publications (291, 6.52%). The studies mainly included the areas of engineering, chemistry, and environmental science ecology. China with a total of 1472 (32.96%) publications dominated research in this area, followed by Spain (436, 9.76%) and Brazil (345, 7.72%). The institutions with the highest number of contributions were the University of Barcelona and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the most productive authors were Brillas E. and Oturan M. A. The results of this study provide important references and information on possible research directions for future investigations on electrochemical degradation of organic pollutants.

Challenges and prospects about the graphene role in the design of photoelectrodes for sunlight-driven water splitting

Graphene and its derivatives have emerged as potential materials for several technological applications including sunlight-driven water splitting reactions. This review critically addresses the latest achievements concerning the use of graphene as a player in the design of hybrid-photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical cells. Insights about the charge carrier dynamics of graphene-based photocatalysts which include metal oxides and non-metal oxide semiconductors are also discussed. The concepts underpinning the continued progress in the field of graphene/photoelectrodes, including different graphene structures, architecture as well as the possible mechanisms for hydrogen and oxygen reactions are also presented. Despite several reports having demonstrated the potential of graphene-based photocatalysts, the achieved performance remains far from the targeted benchmark efficiency for commercial application. This review also highlights the challenges and opportunities related to graphene application in photoelectrochemical cells for future directions in the field.

Catalytic pyrolysis (Ni/Al-MCM-41) of palm (Elaeis guineensis) oil to obtain renewable hydrocarbons

The present work aims to evaluate the potential of Al-MCM-41 and Ni/Al-MCM-41 catalysts for the production of renewable hydrocarbons through the fast pyrolysis of palm oil. Al-MCM-41 mesoporous material was synthesized by the hydrothermal route. The Ni/Al-MCM-41 catalyst was obtained by the wet impregnation method of the Al-MCM-41 material (support) previously synthesized with 2.3% metal in relation to the support mass. The thermal pyrolysis of palm oil yielded many oxygenated compounds with a very high molecular mass. The pyrolysis of the oil under the action of Al-MCM-41 presented greater selectivity when compared to thermal pyrolysis, obtaining 63% of hydrocarbons in the C11-C15 region. The catalytic pyrolysis of the oil with Ni/Al-MCM-41 showed a high deoxygenation rate, obtaining a hydrocarbon percentage equal to 78%, in addition to obtaining a percentage of hydrocarbons equal to 46% in the region of interest, viz., C11-C15, demonstrating the potential of the Ni/Al-MCM-41 catalyst for renewable hydrocarbons production (bio-jet fuel) from palm oil.

Using fish lateral line sensing to improve seismic acquisition and processing

Bioengineering, which studies the principles and design of biological systems, is a field that has inspired the development of several technologies that are currently in use. In this work, we use concepts from the fish lateral line sensing mechanism and apply them to seismic imaging processing. The lateral line is a sensory system composed of an integrated array of mechanical sensors spanning along the fish body. We compare the array of sensors along body fish with the seismic acquisition, which employs an array of equally spaced identical mechanical sensors to image the Earth’s subsurface. In both situations, the mechanical sensors capture and process mechanical vibrations from the environment to produce useful information. We explore the strategy of using the low-pass and high-pass sensors schema of fish lateral line to improve the seismic technique. We use the full-wave inversion method to compare the conventional acquisition procedure of identical sensors with alternative sets of different sensors, which mimics the fish lateral line. Our results show that the alternate sensors arrangement surpasses the performance of the conventional acquisition method, using just half of the input information. The results point at an image processing technique that is computationally more efficient and economical than the usual seismic processing method.

Enhanced rhamnolipid production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa overexpressing estA in a simple medium

A modified Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain capable of overexpressing the estA gene, an encoding gene for a membrane-bound esterase, was constructed and its rhamnolipid (RML) production was studied. Fermentations using wild-type (WT) and modified P. aeruginosa strains were conducted until exhaustion of glycerol in Medium Salt Production, using two different C/N ratios. At a C/N of 83.2, the modified strain produced up to 3.9 times more RMLs than the WT, yielding a maximum concentration of 14.62 g/L RML when measured by HPLC and 22 g/L by the orcinol assay. Cell-free supernatant from the modified strain reduced surface tension to 29.4 mN/m and had a CMC of 240 mg/L and CMD of 56.05. This is the first report on the construction of an estA-based recombinant strain for RML production.
