Abstract
Changes in salinity is a stressful and energy-consuming process in fish which give rise to mortalities, especially in fish fingerlings that are more sensitive during the early stages of their life. In the present study, the effects of three salinities, 3‰ (downstream of river), 8‰ (estuarine), and 13‰ (the maximum salinity in the Caspian Sea), on HSP70 gene expression, cortisol level, immune response (lysozyme, complement C3, IgM), and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, T-AOC) of the stellate sturgeon fingerlings in the presence of HSP inducer compound (TEX-OE®) were evaluated. Our results showed that levels of plasma cortisol and heat shock protein (HSP70) in Acipenser stellatus fingerlings increased due to salinity changes. In the presence of the HSP inducer, HSP70 expression in both gill and liver was significantly increased, whereas cortisol level was notably decreased. Exposure to salinity changes resulted in an increase in antioxidant defense activities (SOD, CAT, and T-AOC) and immune response (lysozyme, IgM, and C3) in the presence of an HSP inducer. In conclusion, an HSP-inducing compounds can have a positive effect in strengthening the immunity and antioxidant system of sturgeon fingerlings by increasing the expression of the HSP70 gene against salinity fluctuations and generally increase the body's physiological tolerance.

Abstract
We report the first case of Acipenser iridovirus European (AcIV-E) infection in starry sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) and in sterlet (A. ruthenus) reared in Northern Italy. During 2018, mortality began in A. stellatus and A. ruthenus specimens reared in co-habitation with Russian sturgeon positive for AcIV-E. Molecular analyses were done on the gills to amplify a fragment of the major capsid protein (MCP) gene using real-time PCR against AcIV-E. DNA of the positive samples was further sequenced and phylogenetic analyses were performed. The MCP gene sequences were highly similar to a virus previously identified in Italy (nucleotide identities between 99.38% and 99.69%). Phylogenetic analysis confirmed our hypothesis of passage of the virus from the infected Russian sturgeon. The detection of AcIV-E in new species of the Acipenseridae family may impact on sturgeon production, with relevant economic losses.

Abstract
Although water pollution by metals in the Danube River is considered high, little is known about its impact on sturgeons. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc as well as their effects on antioxidant enzymes activities in the liver of Acipenser stellatus. The fish were exposed for 7 and 14 days, to two concentrations of copper and zinc (10% and 25% of LC50 96 h), previously determined as 0.54 mg/L Cu2+ and, 34.22 mg/L Zn2+ respectively. The enzymatic responses of A. stellatus varied greatly depending on metal type, concentration and time. Significant bioaccumulation of the two metals was recorded. Even though the water hardness used in the experiment is known to offer a clear protection against metal contamination, stellate sturgeon remains a sensitive species in the face of metal toxicity.

Abstract
An eleven weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of dietary soybean lecithin (SBL) on growth performance, blood chemistry and immunity in juvenile stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus). Fish were fed seven isoproteic (44% crude protein) and isolipidic (17% crude fat) diets containing graded levels of SBL: 0 (control), 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10%. Results showed that dietary SBL supplementation significantly improved the final body weight (BW) and weight gain (WG). Fish fed 6% SBL showed the highest BW and WG values in comparison to fish fed the control diet (P < 0.05), whereas increasing SBL levels above 6% had little practical benefit in terms of somatic growth performance. The inclusion of SBL in diets significantly improved the immune response as data from lysozyme, total Ig levels, alternative complement, phagocytic and bactericidal activities indicated (P < 0.05). The broken-line regression analysis of immunological variable revealed that depending on the parameter considered, the optimal SBL levels in diets for stellate sturgeon juveniles varied. In particular, dietary SBL levels requirements in stellate sturgeon when considering the phagocytic activity rate were determined at 3.3%, whereas 4.1-4.2% were recommended when considering data from lysozyme, alternative complement and bactericidal activities. In contrast, the highest minimum dietary SBL content was estimated at 6.9% when data from total Ig levels were considered. These results indicated that dietary PLs are required for boosting innate immunity in stellate sturgeon, although their minimal level changed depending on the immunological parameter considered. Therefore, we assume that SBL levels comprised between 3.3 and 6.9% may be used as a prophylactic measure to improve the health status in stellate sturgeon. Red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels increased with increasing dietary SBL levels, especially in those sturgeons fed the diet with 6% SBL (P < 0.05). In addition, white blood cell counts significantly increased as dietary SBL levels increased from 4 to 8% in comparison to the control group. Blood biochemistry was also affected by different dietary SBL levels. In particular, significantly higher levels of glucose, cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides were detected in fish fed >6%, >4%, >2% and 2% SBL, respectively (P < 0.05). Based on somatic growth parameters, blood chemistry and systemic immunity parameters, diets containing ca. 6% SBL are recommended for juvenile stellate sturgeon.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to isolate and identify the pathogenic agents in Acipenser stellatus (Pallas, 1771) and Huso huso, (Linnaeus, 1758) reared in the south of Fars province, Iran which have shown infectious disease signs. Samples from spleen and kidney of 32 fishes showing septicemia symptoms such as decreasing of appetite, unbalanced swimming, expanded wounds, and petechia on the body surfaces, pectoral fins rot, visceral hemorrhage, bleeding on the spleen, and heart ascites were collected. Then samples were cultured on brain heart infusion agar growth media, stain and biological and biochemical tests on purified bacteria were performed. On the other hand, 16S rDNA region of the isolated organism was amplified using PCR. The amplified gene fragment was sequenced and evolutionary history was inferred by phylogenetic tree construction using neighbor-joining method. Results indicated that two bacterial species including Chryseobacteriumjoostei which isolated from the kidney of stellate sturgeon (43.00%), and Aeromonasveronii which isolated from the spleen of both sturgeon species (75.00% and 31.00% from beluga and stellate sturgeon, respectively), were recognized. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that Fars isolated organisms including A. veronii and C. joostei had highest similarity with A. veronii bv veronii and C. joostei isolated from France, respectively.

Abstract
There is no evidence of the effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) administration on stress response and related metabolites after a short-period in chondrostean. In this study, we examined whether E2 is capable of inducing the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal axis activity. To accomplish this, sexually immature Acipenser stellatus were injected intraperitoneally with saline or E2 (5mg/kg body mass) and sampled 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72h later. Plasma E2, cortisol, glucose, lactate, hematocrit (Hct), total protein (TP), cholesterol, triglyceride, alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus concentrations were examined. Plasma levels of E2 significantly increased after 1h in E2-injected fish and remained high after 12h. E2 injection enhanced plasma TP and Ca concentrations, but had no effect on other parameters. Injection of either saline or E2 enhanced plasma glucose, lactate, TP, and Ca concentrations, but had no effect on Hct, cholesterol, triglyceride, and ALP. The results demonstrated that acutely elevated level of E2 did not lead to intense changes of stress metabolites and altered biochemical changes compared to the fish in control or saline treatment groups. Therefore, we found no exhibition of E2 on the rate of cortisol synthesis or stress indicators in this species, while E2 could modulate some other related metabolites on vitellogenesis pathway.

Abstract
The levels of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the liver, kidney, gills and muscle tissues of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus; n=16), and Stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus; n=7) collected from coastal waters of the South Caspian Sea from March and April 2011. The distribution and composition pattern of PAHs in the different tissues of sturgeons, and the effects of lipid content in sturgeon tissues and the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) of PAHs congeners on them were analyzed. The levels of total PAHs in the various tissues of Persian sturgeon and Stellate sturgeon ranged from 2.095 to 6.587 and 1.942 to 6.206 μg g(-1)dw, respectively. Stellate sturgeon showed significantly higher levels of heavy PAHs (⩾ 4-rings) than Persian sturgeon. The analysis has revealed a high degree of differential accumulation of the studied PAHs in the tissues of the both species. Low molecular weight PAHs predominated in the sturgeons, accounting for 81.89% of the total PAHs. Among the sixteen tested PAHs, naphthalene was the most dominant congener, followed by phenanthrene and fluorene. The PAHs levels and distribution in the tissues of sturgeons are dependent on both the Kow of PAH congeners and the lipid content in these tissues. There was a significant positive relationship (r=0.868, p<0.005) between lipid content and PAHs levels. The statistically significant negative relationships (p<0.01) were found between log Kow and log-transformed PAHs levels for muscle tissues of both sturgeon species.

Abstract
The dietary supplementation of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) in stellate sturgeon juvenile, Acipenser stellatus (with mean initial body weight of 30.16 ± 0.14 g) was evaluated for the effect on growth, autochthonous intestinal microbiata and hemato-immunological parameters for 11 weeks. FOS was added at a level of 0, 1% and 2% to the commercial pellet diet (BioMar). At the end of the experiment, growth parameters, survival rate, lactobacillus bacterial population, hematological and immunological parameters were determined. The fish fed on 1% FOS significantly showed higher final weight, WG%, SGR and PER and lower FCR compared to those of the control group (P < 0.05). Survival rate did not significantly differ between the treatments (P > 0.05). However, FOS administration resulted in lower survival. The serum lysozyme activity was significantly affected by dietary 1% FOS (P < 0.05), while respiratory burst activity was not significantly affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.05). In fish fed on the diet with 1% FOS showed a significant increase of total heterotrophic autochthonous bacterial and presumptive LAB levels (P < 0.05) compared with those fed on the diets supplemented with prebiotics. In addition to increase in WBC, RBC, MCV, hematocrit, hemoglobin and lymphocyte levels were observed in this group. These results indicated that dietary supplementation of FOS at a dose of 1% improved growth performance, beneficial intestinal microbiata and stimulate immune response of stellate sturgeon juvenile.
