Evolution and Strengthening Effects of the Heat-Resistant Phases in Al-Si Piston Alloys with Different Fe/Ni Ratios

The evolution of three major heat-resistant phases (δ-Al₃CuNi, γ-Al₇Cu₄Ni, T-Al₉FeNi) and its strengthening effects at high temperature in Al-Si piston alloys with various Fe/Ni ratios were studied using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). With the increase of Fe/Ni ratios, the heat-resistant phases begin to evolve in category, morphology, and distribution. The results show that a suitable Fe/Ni ratio will cause the T-Al₉FeNi phase to appear and form a closed or semi-closed network with δ-Al₃CuNi and γ-Al₇Cu₄Ni phases instead of the originally isolated heat-resistant phases. As a result, the ultimate tensile strength of the optimized alloy reached 106 MPa with a Fe/Ni ratio of 0.23, which was 23.3% higher than that of base alloy at 350 °C, which is attributed to the fact that a closed or semi-closed network microstructure is advantageous to the bearing of mechanical loads. This work may provide useful ideas for the development of high temperature resistant piston alloys.

Influence of silicon on growth mechanism of micro-arc oxidation coating on cast Al-Si alloy

Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is a plasma-assisted electrochemistry method to prepare protective ceramic coatings on aluminium alloys. Alloy elements of the Al-alloy substrate, such as Si, Cu, Mg and Li, have effects on the microstructure and composition of the MAO coatings. Usually, silicon distributes in the cast Al-Si alloy substrate as small laths and they cover approximately 10% of the substrate surface. Therefore, their effects on the growth process and microstructure of the MAO coatings are worthy of notice. In the present study, oxide coatings with a thickness of 15-18 µm were prepared on the ZL109 Al-Si alloy by MAO. The phase content, surface morphology and element distribution of the coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and electron probe micro-analysis respectively. The average hardness of the coatings was 622.3 ± 10.2 HV_0.05. The adhesive strength of the coatings is 40.55 ± 2.55 N, and the adhesion of the coatings could be rated as 5B by tape test according to ASTM D3359-17 standard test methods, which indicated a high adhesive strength between the MAO coating and substrate. The effects of silicon laths on surface morphology and composition of the coatings were discussed, and a model was put forward to describe the growth process of the MAO coatings on cast Al-Si alloys. The authors believe that the high silicon content of the substrate has no adverse influence on the structure and properties of the MAO coating on the ZL109 alloy.

Sr-Al-Si co-segregated regions in eutectic Si phase of Sr-modified Al-10Si alloy

The addition of 200 ppm strontium to an Al-10 wt% Si casting alloy changes the morphology of the eutectic silicon phase from coarse plate-like to fine fibrous networks. In order to clarify this modification mechanism the location of Sr within the eutectic Si phase has been investigated by a combination of high-resolution methods. Whereas three-dimensional atom probe tomography allows us to visualise the distribution of Sr on the atomic scale and to analyse its local enrichment, transmission electron microscopy yields information about the crystallographic nature of segregated regions. Segregations with two kinds of morphologies were found at the intersections of Si twin lamellae: Sr-Al-Si co-segregations of rod-like morphology and Al-rich regions of spherical morphology. Both are responsible for the formation of a high density of multiple twins and promote the anisotropic growth of the eutectic Si phase in specific crystallographic directions during solidification. The experimental findings are related to the previously postulated mechanism of "impurity induced twinning".
