Multidetector computed tomography evaluation of normal thymus and variations with age

Background

Thymus is a T-cell-producing lymphoid organ that appears prominent in the paediatric population and involutes in size with ageing. The gland shows a wide variety of appearances across different age groups. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the computed tomography (CT) appearance of thymus gland in the normal population with a focus on size, CT attenuation and fatty infiltration in different age groups.

Patients and Methods

This is a retrospective study done after taking approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee. Patients undergone CT scans of the thorax were identified from our database. All evaluations were done in non-contrast CT scans. Patients having underlying diseases that may have associated thymic abnormality were excluded. The appearance of thymus and the presence of fatty replacement were assessed. The size of thymus (length and thickness of right limb and left limb) and non-contrast CT Hounsfield unit (HU) value of thymic tissue were measured and compared in various age groups.

Results

Four hundred and fifty patients were included, 262 (58.2%) were male. Mean age was 33.6 ± 17.1 years, range (3 months-80 years). The size of thymus was observed to decrease with increasing age. The mean age of complete fatty replacement in our study was 45 years. Complete fatty replacement was noted in all cases with an age of more than 60 years. The most common shape was arrowhead, and the most common location was pre-aortic and para-aortic location. Non-contrast CT HU value was maximum in infants and gradually decreased with advancing age.

Conclusion

Even normal thymus can show varied appearance on CT which changes with the age of the patient being imaged. A comparison with normative data could help differentiate normal from abnormal glands to avoid unnecessary intervention.

Dual-frequency power ultrasound effects on the complexing index, physicochemical properties, and digestion mechanism of arrowhead starch-lipid complexes

Multi-scale structural interactions of the arrowhead starch-linoleic/stearic acid complexes under different durations (20, 40 & 60 min) of dual-frequency power ultrasound (DFPU, 20/40 kHz) and their underlying mechanisms were discussed. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed V6 type (V6-I, II) crystalline structure for ultrasonically-treated arrowhead starch-linoleic acid (UTAS-LA) complexes. An increased degree of short-range molecular order as IR ratios of 1045/1022 cm^-1 was evident from the FTIR results. The complexing index (CI) values of the complexes were greater than 65%, and the highest CI values of 83.04% and 81.26% were found in the case of UTAS-LA40 and UTAS-LA60, respectively. SEM results showed that LA-complexes had a sponge-like structure with smooth surfaces, while the SA-complexes exhibited flaky structures with irregular shapes and rough surfaces. The V-type complexes exhibited a higher digestion resistance than native AS and un-sonicated AS-LA/SA complexes due to partial RDS convention to RS.

Structural and physicochemical characterization of modified starch from arrowhead tuber (Sagittaria sagittifolia L.) using tri-frequency power ultrasound

Sagittaria sagittifolia L. is a well-known plant, belongs to the Alismataceae family. Sonication can improve the functional properties of starch; hence, the aim of this study was to develop ultrasonically modified arrowhead starch (UMAS) using a sophisticated and eco-friendly tri-frequency power ultrasound (20/40/60 kHz) method at 300, 600, and 900 W for 15 and 30 min. Significant (p < 0.05) increases in swelling power, solubility, and water and oil holding capacities were achieved. FTIR spectroscopy corroborated the ordered, amorphous, and hydrated crystals of the sonicated samples. Increases in sonication frequency and power led to significant (p < 0.05) increases in onset gelatinization temperatures. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of sonicated samples showed superficial cracks and roughness on starch granules appeared in a sonication power-dependent manner compared with that of untreated sample. Overall, the ultrasonically-treated samples showed improved physicochemical properties, which could be useful for industrial applications.

Fiji plugin for annotating movies with custom arrows

Annotation of time-lapse data provides an important tool to highlight dynamic processes. Particularly, arrows, circles and arrowheads are useful to pinpoint a specific process, stationary or evolving over time. Here, we describe a user-friendly Fiji plugin to facilitate annotation of movies with arrows, arrowheads and circles. The plugin also enables saving and loading of annotated tracks.

Summary: We present a user-friendly Fiji plugin to annotate movies with custom arrows, thereby providing biologists with no coding experience an easy tool to highlight dynamic processes in their movies.

Structural characterization and immunostimulatory activity of a novel polysaccharide isolated with subcritical water from Sagittaria sagittifolia L

In the present study, we obtained polysaccharides from Sagittaria sagittifolia L. (SSP) with subcritical water extraction (SWE). Two water-soluble polysaccharides (SSP-W1 and SSP-S1) from the acquired SSP were isolated with DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-100. Besides, the structural characteristics and immunostimulatory activity were also investigated. The results showed that both SSP-W1 and SSP-S1 were homogeneous polysaccharides and the molecular weight was 62.03 KDa and 15.2 KDa, respectively. In addition, both SSP-W1 and SSP-S1 are heteropolysaccharides. Moreover, FT-IR analysis showed that SSP-W1 was α-pyranose polysaccharide, while SSP-S1 was a typical β-pyranose polysaccharide. Congo red staining showed that there was no triple helix structure in both SSP-W1 and SSP-S1. Furthermore, both SSP-W1 and SSP-S1 could promote the proliferation, production of NO, and secretion of TNF-α and IL-10 of macrophages RAW 264.7, significantly. Therefore, the polysaccharides extracted from Sagittaria sagittifolia L. with SWE have the potential to be used as immunoreactive agent in medicine and functional foods.

Arrowhead (Sagittaria cuneata) as a bioindicator of nitrogen and phosphorus for prairie streams and wetlands

The emergent aquatic plant, Sagittaria cuneata, is an easily-identified and commonly-found species in the Great Plains region of North America and has the potential to be a bioindicator of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) because of its previously-identified leaf plasticity in response to nutrient conditions. To identify associations between leaf morphology and soil and water nutrients, we conducted: (1) a 10-week controlled experiment in which plants were grown in nutrient-enriched sediment, nutrient-enriched water, or unamended control trials, and (2) a field study where emergent leaves were collected from 15 streams of varying nutrient concentrations. Plants grown in experimentally enriched sediment were more productive than those grown in enriched water or control conditions: they produced more emergent leaves and tubers, had a larger final biomass and height, and developed emergent leaves that showed a consistent increase in size and unique change in shape over time. Emergent leaves collected from field plants also showed significant variability of leaf traits; however, this variability occurred at all scales of replication (leaf, plant, quadrat, and site), with linear mixed effects modelling indicating that random chance was likely driving this variability. Although sediment nutrients were crucial to successful growth of S. cuneata under controlled conditions, the high variability in leaf morphology under field conditions (likely due to large natural variability at the species, population, and individual scale) make leaf plasticity of S. cuneata unsuitable as a bioindicator. Our results emphasize the need to quantify within and among plant variation in leaf morphology (and to clarify sampling methods) for the many taxa of aquatic macrophytes that are phenotypically plastic and notoriously difficult to classify.
