Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The regular uptake of a high-fat diet (HFD) with changing lifestyle causes atherosclerosis leading to cardiovascular diseases and autonomic dysfunction. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the correlation of autonomic activity to lipid and atherosclerosis markers. Further, the study proposes a support vector machine (SVM) based model in the prediction of atherosclerosis severity. METHODS AND RESULTS The Lead-II electrocardiogram and blood markers were measured from both the control and the experiment subjects each week for nine consecutive weeks. The time-domain heart rate variability (HRV) parameters were derived, and the significance level was tested using a one-way Analysis of Variance. The correlation analysis was performed to determine the relation between autonomic parameters and lipid and atherosclerosis markers. The statistically significant time-domain values were used as features of the SVM. The observed results demonstrated the reduced time domain HRV parameters with the increase in lipid and atherosclerosis index markers with the progressive atherosclerosis severity. The correlation analysis revealed a negative association between time-domain HRV parameters with lipid and atherosclerosis parameters. The percentage accuracy increases from 86.58% to 98.71% with the increase in atherosclerosis severity with regular consumption of HFD. CONCLUSIONS Atherosclerosis causes autonomic dysfunction with reduced HRV. The negative correlation between autonomic parameters and lipid profile and atherosclerosis indexes marker revealed the potential role of vagal activity in the prognosis of atherosclerosis progression. The support vector machine presented a respectable accuracy in the prediction of atherosclerosis severity from the control group.

Abstract
Despite the importance of physiological responses to stress in a short-term, chronically these adjustments may be harmful and lead to diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) has been reported to be involved in expression of physiological and behavioral responses to stress, but the local neurochemical mechanisms involved are not completely described. The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neurotransmission is a prominent brain neurochemical system implicated in the physiological and behavioral changes induced by aversive threats. Furthermore, chronic exposure to aversive situations affects the CRF neurotransmission in brain regions involved in stress responses. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the influence of CRF neurotransmission in the LH on changes in cardiovascular function and baroreflex activity induced by chronic variable stress (CVS). We identified that CVS enhanced baseline arterial pressure and impaired baroreflex function, which were followed by increased expression of CRF2, but not CRF1, receptor expression within the LH. Local microinjection of either CRF1 or CRF2 receptor antagonist within the LH inhibited the baroreflex impairment caused by CVS, but without affecting the mild hypertension. Taken together, the findings documented in this study suggest that LH CRF neurotransmission participates in the baroreflex impairment related to chronic stress exposure.

Abstract
Attention bias modification training aims to alter attentional deployment to symptom-relevant emotionally salient stimuli. Such training has therapeutic applications in the management of disorders including anxiety, depression, addiction and chronic pain. In emotional reactions, attentional biases interact with autonomically-mediated changes in bodily arousal putatively underpinning affective feeling states. Here we examined the impact of attention bias modification training on behavioral and autonomic reactivity. Fifty-eight participants were divided into two groups. A training group (TR) received attention bias modification training to enhance attention to pleasant visual information, while a control group (CT) performed a procedure that did not modify attentional bias. After training, participants performed an evaluation task in which pairs of emotional and neutral images (unpleasant-neutral, pleasant-neutral, neutral-neutral) were presented, while behavioral (eye movements) and autonomic (skin conductance; heart rate) responses were recorded. At the behavioral level, trained participants were faster to orientate attention to pleasant images, and slower to orientate to unpleasant images. At the autonomic level, trained participants showed attenuated skin conductance responses to unpleasant images, while stronger skin conductance responses were generally associated with higher anxiety. These data argue for the use of attentional training to address both the attentional and the physiological sides of emotional responses, appropriate for anxious and depressive symptomatology, characterized by atypical attentional deployment and autonomic reactivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) showed anti-inflammatory properties in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of SNS in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-six patients with mild and moderate disease were randomized into two groups: SNS (delivered at S3 and S4 sacral foramina) and sham-SNS (delivered 8-10 mm away from sacral foramina), with the therapy applied once daily for one hour, for two weeks. We evaluated the Mayo score and several exploratory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein in the plasma, pro-inflammatory cytokines and norepinephrine in the serum, assessment of autonomic activity, and diversity and abundance of fecal microbiota species. RESULTS After two weeks, 73% of the subjects in the SNS group achieved clinical response, compared with 27% in the sham-SNS group. Levels of C-reactive protein, pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum, and autonomic activity were significantly improved toward a healthy profile in the SNS group but not in the sham-SNS group. Absolute abundance of fecal microbiota species and one of the metabolic pathways were changed in the SNS group but not in the sham-SNS group. Significant correlations were observed between pro-inflammatory cytokines and norepinephrine in the serum on the one side and fecal microbiota phyla on the other side. CONCLUSIONS Patients with mild and moderate UC were responsive to a two-week SNS therapy. After performing further studies to evaluate its efficacy and safety, temporary SNS delivered through acupuncture needles may become a useful screening tool for identifying SNS therapy responders before considering long-term implantation of the implantable pulse generator and SNS leads for performing long-term SNS therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with greater risk of incident hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and autonomic derangements are suggested as contributing mechanisms. Women and Black adults have higher CVD risk associated with stress; however, whether there is a sex difference in autonomic and inflammatory mechanisms among Black individuals with PTSD is not known. We hypothesized that Black women with PTSD have higher inflammation, sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity and impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). METHODS In 42 Black Veterans with PTSD (Women, N = 18 and Men, N = 24), we measured inflammatory biomarkers, continuous blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) at rest and during arterial BRS testing via the modified Oxford technique. RESULTS Groups were matched for age and body mass index (BMI). Resting BP was similar between groups, but HR was higher (76 ± 12 vs. 68 ± 9 beats/min, p = 0.021) in women compared to men. Although women had lower PTSD symptoms severity (57 ± 17 vs. 68 ± 12 a.u.), resting MSNA (27 ± 13 vs. 16 ± 5 bursts/min, p = 0.003) was higher in women compared to men, respectively. Likewise, cardiovagal BRS was blunted (p = 0.002) in women (7.6 ± 4.3 ms/mmHg) compared to men (15.5 ± 8.4 ms/mmHg) while sympathetic BRS was not different between groups (p = 0.381). Black women also had higher (p = 0.020) plasma levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2). CONCLUSION Black women with PTSD have higher resting HR and MSNA, greater impairment of cardiovagal BRS and possibly higher inflammation. These findings suggest a higher burden of autonomic and inflammatory derangements in Black women compared to Black men with PTSD.

Abstract
Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) allows the study of functional brain connectivity based on spatially structured variations in neuronal activity. Proper evaluation of connectivity requires removal of non-neural contributions to the fMRI signal, in particular hemodynamic changes associated with autonomic variability. Regression analysis based on autonomic indicator signals has been used for this purpose, but may be inadequate if neuronal and autonomic activities covary. To investigate this potential co-variation, we performed rsfMRI experiments while concurrently acquiring electroencephalography (EEG) and autonomic indicator signals, including heart rate, respiratory depth, and peripheral vascular tone. We identified a recurrent and systematic spatiotemporal pattern of fMRI (named as fMRI cascade), which features brief signal reductions in salience and default-mode networks and the thalamus, followed by a biphasic global change with a sensory-motor dominance. This fMRI cascade, which was mostly observed during eyes-closed condition, was accompanied by large EEG and autonomic changes indicative of arousal modulations. Importantly, the removal of the fMRI cascade dynamics from rsfMRI diminished its correlations with various signals. These results suggest that the rsfMRI correlations with various physiological and neural signals are not independent but arise, at least partly, from the fMRI cascades and associated neural and physiological changes at arousal modulations.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate resting autonomic activity in adults who stutter (AWS) compared to adults who do not stutter (ANS) and the relationship this has on self-reports of social anxiety. METHODS Thirteen AWS and 15 ANS completed the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS; Mattick & Clark, 1998) and Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE; Leary, 1983). Following this, measures of skin conductance levels (i.e. index of sympathetic activity) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (i.e. index of parasympathetic activity) were taken during a 5-minute resting, baseline period. Independent sample t tests were used to assess differences between groups on self-reports of anxiety (SIAS, BFNE) and resting autonomic levels (SCL, RSA). Separate multiple regression analyses were performed in order to assess the relationship between self-reports of anxiety and autonomic measures. RESULTS Results showed significantly higher mean SCL and lower mean RSA levels in the AWS compared to the ANS at resting, baseline. Regression analysis showed that self-reports from the SIAS had a significant effect on RSA levels for the AWS but not the ANS. No significant effects were found for BFNE on RSA. Nor was there a significant effect from SIAS or BFNE on SCL levels for either group. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that resting RSA levels may be a physiological marker for social anxiety levels in adults who stutter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dynamic pupillometry is a simple screening tool for quantifying pupillary light reflex (PLR), to indicate autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the gold standard method for assessing ANS effects on the heart. The present study aimed to compare ANS activity as measured using dynamic pupillometry (DP) with short term HRV in healthy volunteers. METHODS The study includes 200 participants aged between 20-60 years. PLR was measured using infrared videography and categorized into different quantitative parameters that reflect ANS activity. Simultaneously, Lead II ECG was recorded for 5 min to evaluate the short term HRV of time and frequency domain parameters. The data obtained from the two methods were compared with each other to provide the relationship between PLR and HRV. RESULTS Study participants' mean age was 36.95 ± 9.45 years. The different pupillary indices of PLR and all the HRV parameters were within the range of normative data. Several PLR indicators of the parasympathetic function include mean constriction velocity (MCV; r = 0.60, P < 0.001), absolute constriction amplitude (ACA; r = 0.57, P < 0.001) baseline pupil diameter (BPD; r = 0.44, p < 0.001), and minimum pupil diameter (MPD; r = -0.35, p < 0.001) were significantly correlated with high-frequency power (HF in normalized units) of HRV signal. CONCLUSION PLR variables showed a significant relationship to HRV indices. Dynamic pupillometry can be a complementary tool to HRV for evaluating ANS activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The present study compared cardiovascular autonomic activity and reactivity during fasting (FS) and hyperglycemia (HS) states in young healthy females. METHODS This case crossover study was conducted on 30 females recruited by convenient sampling. Blood glucose levels were measured in FS and after oral glucose load i.e., HS. Finger arterial blood pressure (BP) and ECG were recorded constantly to monitor baroreceptor sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate variability (HRV). Autonomic reactivity was tested with deep breathing (DB), Valsalva manoeuvre (VM), and head-up-tilt (HUT) test under FS and HS. HRV parameters not normally distributed were natural log (ln) transformed. RESULTS Significantly reduced Valsalva ratio and higher heart rate and BP were observed in HS that continued during HUT (P < 0.05). The lnSDNN (standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals) and lnRMSSD (root mean square of successive differences) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in HS during HUT. After HUT, lnRMSSD remained lower (P = 0.031), whereas lnLF/HF (low frequency/high frequency power) ratio (P = 0.042) and LFnu (normalized units) (P = 0.024) were higher in HS. BRS was significantly lower in supine position in HS compared to FS and further reduced in HUT position in both FS and HS (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Compared to FS, the HS exhibited heightened sympathetic activity with attenuation of parasympathetic activity and this phenomenon was further accentuated by HUT. BRS was more sensitive indicator of autonomic effects of hyperglycemia in resting state. In addition to standard tests, autonomic reactivity in vulnerable young subjects could be useful to detect autonomic imbalance at an early stage.

Abstract
Background: Yoga therapy is widely applied to the maintenance of health and to treatment of various illnesses. Previous researches indicate the involvement of autonomic control in its effects, although the general agreement has not been reached regarding the acute modulation of autonomic function. Aim: The present study aimed at revealing the acute effect of yoga on the autonomic activity using heart rate variability (HRV) measurement. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy controls participated in the present study. Fifteen of them (39.5 ± 8.5 years old) were naïve and 12 (45.1 ± 7.0 years old) were experienced in yoga. Yoga skills included breath awareness, two types of asana, and two types of pranayama. HRV was measured at the baseline, during yoga, and at the resting state after yoga. Results: In both yoga-naïve and experienced participants, the changes in low-frequency (LF) component of HRV and its ratio to high-frequency (HF) component (LF/HF) after yoga were found to be correlated negatively with the baseline data. The changes in LF after yoga were also correlated with LF during yoga. The changes in HF as well as the raw HRV data after yoga were not related to the baseline HRV or the HRV during yoga. Conclusion: The results indicate that yoga leads to an increase in LF when LF is low and leads to a decrease in LF when it is high at the baseline. This normalization of LF is dependent on the autonomic modulation during yoga and may underlie the clinical effectiveness of yoga therapy both in yoga-naïve and experienced subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Autonomic instability during sleep can influence the risk of cerebrovascular diseases. In this study, we performed a polygraphy to evaluate, heart rate variability (HRV) in a group of patients with lacunar stroke that is a condition at high risk of recurrence. METHODS Twenty-one lacunar stroke patients were enrolled one month after stroke occurrence. Sleep quality was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The presence of common sleep disorders and autonomic changes during the night was investigated by a polygraphy monitoring. Results were compared with those obtained in a group of 21 healthy subjects. RESULTS Patients and controls were similar for age, sex distribution and main cardiovascular risk factors with the exception of the body mass index. Significant differences were detected for all polysomnographic (PSG) parameters and for the PSQI score. By considering HRV values, patients with pathologic values (12 patients, HRV>2) showed significantly higher values in BMI (31 ± 2.9 vs. 26.6 ± 3.6, p = 0.006) and PSQI scores (7.9 ± 2.6 vs. 4.2 ± 1.9) with respect to patients with normal HRV values (nine patients, HRV≤2). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that the prevalence of nocturnal autonomic dysfunction is high in lacunar stroke patients even in the absence of the commonest sleep-related disorders. An abnormal HRV may contribute to increase the risk of stroke recurrence. Based on our results, the indication to polygraphy in patients with lacunar stroke should be carefully considered.

Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with a greater risk of incident hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation, impaired baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) decreased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and overactive sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity are suggested as contributing mechanisms. Increasing severity of PTSD symptoms has been linked to greater cardiovascular risk; however, the impact of PTSD symptom severity on inflammation and autonomic control of blood pressure has not yet been explored. We hypothesized that increasing PTSD symptom severity is linked to higher inflammation, greater SNS activity, lower PNS reactivity and impaired BRS. Seventy Veterans participated in this study: 28 with severe PTSD ((Clinical Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) > 60; S-PTSD), 16 with moderate PTSD (CAPS ≥ 45 ≤ 60; M-PTSD) and 26 Controls (CAPS < 45; NO-PTSD). We recorded continuous blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) via EKG, heart rate variability (HRV) markers reflecting PNS and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) at rest, during arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) testing via the modified Oxford technique, and during 3 min of mental stress via mental arithmetic. Blood samples were analyzed for 12 biomarkers of systemic and vascular inflammation. While BP was comparable between severity groups, HR tended to be higher (p = 0.055) in S-PTSD (76 ± 2 beats/min) than in Controls (67 ± 2 beats/min) but comparable to M-PTSD (70 ± 3 beats/min). There were no differences in resting HRV and MSNA between groups; however, cardiovagal BRS was blunted (p = 0.021) in S-PTSD (10 ± 1 ms/mmHg) compared to controls (16 ± 3 ms/mmHg) but comparable to M-PTSD (12 ± 2 ms/mmHg). Veterans in the S-PTSD group had a higher (p < 0.001) combined inflammatory score compared to both M-PTSD and NO-PTSD. Likewise, while mental stress induced similar SNS and cardiovascular responses between the groups, there was a greater reduction in HRV in S-PTSD compared to both M-PTSD and NO-PTSD. In summary, individuals with severe PTSD symptoms have higher inflammation, greater impairment of BRS, a trend towards higher resting HR and exaggerated PNS withdrawal at the onset of mental stress that may contribute to cardiovascular risk in severe PTSD.

Abstract
A healthy 73-year-old woman unpredictably developed Takotsubo cardiomyopathy syndrome (TTS) during Holter-electrocardiogram (ECG) recording. Thus, the complete chronological ECG data on the actual onset day of TTS were obtained. Many heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, including the low-frequency components (LF) and the high-frequency components (HF), on the actual onset day and in the healing phase were calculated. The interesting facts on the actual onset day were that the suppression of both LF and HF appeared earlier than the changes of the ECG waveform; and the LF/HF ratio remained within the normal range, although both LF and HF were markedly suppressed. The abnormality on the actual onset day was clear compared with the healing phase. It is noteworthy to obtain the chronological ECG data on the actual onset day of TTS in a healthy patient. The present data are unique in terms of being analyzed on the actual onset day. Although the HRV parameters, including LF and HF, were obviously abnormal, there is some skepticism about using HRV parameters as indices of cardiac autonomic activity. In the present case, it was concluded that the abnormality of cardiac autonomic activity contributed to the onset of TTS. These data are unlikely to ever be replicated, and we hope that this report helps elucidate the TTS mechanism.

Abstract
Aim: Marinobufagenin (MBG), a cardiotonic steroid and a natriuretic hormone, is elevated in response to high salt diet consumption. In animal models salt intake stimulates adrenocortical MBG secretion via increased angiotensin II, sympathetic activity and aldosterone. No evidence in humans exists to suggest the involvement of the angiotensinergic-sympatho-excitatory pathway in MBG production. We investigated whether MBG is related to indices of autonomic activity in men and women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 680 black and white, men and women from the African-PREDICT study (aged 20-30 years). Continuous 24 hr ECG recordings were used to obtain low and high frequency (LF, HF) heart rate variability (HRV). We measured 24 hr urinary MBG excretion and serum aldosterone. Results: We found a positive association of MBG excretion with estimated salt intake (P < 0.001) and aldosterone (P < 0.001) in women and men. In women only, a positive relationship was evident between MBG excretion and LF HRV in multivariate adjusted regression analyses (Adj. R 2 = 0.33; β = 0.11; P = 0.030). In men, MBG excretion associated positively with HF HRV in similar regression analyses (R 2 = 0.36; β = 0.12; P = 0.034). Sex-specific results were corroborated only in blacks, namely, a positive association of MBG excretion with LF HRV in black women (R 2 = 0.38; β = 0.13; P = 0.036), and negative association with HF HRV in black men (R 2 = 0.40; β = 0.18; P = 0.045). No relationships were evident in white women (P = 0.58) or men (P = 0.27). Conclusion: Our findings in this human cohort support suggested mechanisms whereby MBG is elevated as a result of increased salt intake, including autonomic activity, previously demonstrated in Dahl salt-sensitive hypertension.

Abstract
Human and animal studies have confirmed that inhalation of particles from ambient air or occupational settings not only causes pathophysiological changes in the respiratory system, but causes cardiovascular effects as well. At an equal mass lung burden, nanoparticles are more potent in causing systemic microvascular dysfunction than fine particles of similar composition. Thus, accumulated evidence from animal studies has led to heightened concerns about the potential short- and long-term deleterious effects of inhalation of engineered nanoparticles on the cardiovascular system. This review highlights the new observations from animal studies, which document the adverse effects of pulmonary exposure to engineered nanoparticles on the cardiovascular system and elucidate the potential mechanisms involved in regulation of cardiovascular function, in particular, how the neuronal system plays a role and reacts to pulmonary nanoparticle exposure based on both in vivo and in vitro studies. In addition, this review also discusses the possible influence of altered autonomic nervous activity on preexisting cardiovascular conditions. Whether engineered nanoparticle exposure serves as a risk factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases warrants further investigation.

Abstract
This study investigated neuroendocrine, autonomic, and cardiovascular changes evoked by daily exposure to the same type of stressor (homotypic) or different aversive stressor stimuli (heterotypic) in 60-days-old female normotensive Wistar rats and female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Both strains of rats were exposed for 10 consecutive days to either the homotypic stressor repeated restraint stress (RRS) or the heterotypic stressor chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). As expected, SHR had higher baseline blood pressure values and impaired baroreflex activity in relation to normotensive animals. Besides, SHR presented higher plasma corticosterone levels and decreased thymus weight. Both RRS and CUS increased baseline plasma corticosterone concentration and decreased body weight gain in both normotensive and SHR rats. In addition, both stress protocols caused hypertrophy of adrenal glands in normotensive rats. Regarding the cardiovascular effects, RRS increased basal heart rate in both rat strains, which was mediated by an increase in sympathetic tone to the heart. Besides, RRS increased baroreflex-mediated tachycardia in SHR animals, while CUS increased cardiac parasympathetic activity and pacemaker activity in normotensive rats. Taken together, these results indicate a stress type-specific effect, as identified by a vulnerability of both strains to the deleterious cardiovascular effects evoked by the homotypic stressor and a resilience to the impact of the heterotypic stressor. Vulnerability of hypertensive rats was evidenced by the absence of CUS-evoked adaptive cardiovascular responses and an increase of baroreflex tachycardia in SHR animals subjected to RRS. The somatic and HPA axis changes were overall independent of the chronic stress regimen and pre-existing hypertension.

Abstract
This study investigated the physiological, somatic and behavioral changes evoked by daily exposure to the same type of stressor (homotypic) or different aversive stressor stimuli (heterotypic) in male and female rats. For this, adult Wistar rats were subjected to a 10days regimen of repeated restraint stress (RRS, homotypic stressor) or chronic variable stress (CVS, heterotypic stressor). Effects evoked by CVS included: (i) adrenal hypertrophy and decreased body weight gain in male animals, (ii) a sympathetically-mediated increase in basal heart rate in males, and (iii) a rise in plasma corticosterone concentration and anxiogenic effects in female animals. The homotypic stressor RRS also induced an increase in plasma corticosterone and anxiogenic effects in females, decreased body weight gain in males and evoked a sympathetically-mediated increase in heart rate in both sexes. Changes in cardiovascular function and autonomic activity evoked by both stressors were followed by impairment of baroreflex activity in males, but not female animals. Both chronic stressors evoked changes in blood pressure responsiveness to vasoconstrictor and vasodilator agents in both sexes. Taken together, these results indicate that regardless of chronic stress regimen males are more vulnerable to somatic effects of chronic stressors, while females appear to be more susceptible to neuroendocrine and behavioral changes. Present findings also indicate that females are selectively vulnerable to cardiovascular and autonomic changes evoked by homotypic stressors. Nevertheless, homotypic and heterotypic stressors similarly affect cardiovascular function and autonomic activity in males.

Abstract
To study the effect of raspberry total flavonoids on perimenopausal model in mice. Blank group, sham operation, and the rest of the mice made the menopausal model. Choose 72 mice castrated completely random divided into 6 groups for the experiment, respectively: model group, gengnianan (GNA) capsule group, soybean isoflavone soft (SIS) capsule group, high, mid and low dose group of total flavonoids of raspberry (TFR). Animals in each group were given the corresponding drugs tenth days after operation, and were given intragastrical administration of once a day for continuous administration of 21 days. Each group of mice in the administration of 18 days to determine the number of autonomic activities within 5 min, in the administration of 19–20 days to determine the incubation of the mice first entry into the darkroom and the number of shocks into the darkroom within 5 min. At 2 h after the last administration (fasting for 12 h), mice were sacrificed and serum was collected. Serum levels of E2, T, LH and FSH were measured. Dissect the uterus, uterus, thymus and spleen. Weigh the wet weight and calculate the organ index, the morphological changes of uterus, thymus and spleen were observed. The results showed that the TFR had a good therapeutic effect on the perimenopausal model of mice after giving a high, mid and low dose of raspberry flavonoids for some time.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder marked by difficulty in social interactions and communication. ASD also often present symptoms of autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning abnormalities. In individuals with autism the sympathetic branch of the ANS presents an over-activation on a background of the parasympathetic activity deficits, creating an autonomic imbalance, evidenced by a faster heart rate with little variation and increased tonic electrodermal activity. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of 12 sessions of 0.5 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on autonomic activity in children with ASD. Electrocardiogram and skin conductance level (SCL) were recorded and analyzed during each session of rTMS. The measures of interest were time domain (i.e., R-R intervals, standard deviation of cardiac intervals, NN50-cardio-intervals >50 ms different from preceding interval) and frequency domain heart rate variability (HRV) indices [i.e., power of high frequency (HF) and low frequency (LF) components of HRV spectrum, LF/HF ratio]. Based on our prior pilot studies it was proposed that the course of 12 weekly inhibitory low-frequency rTMS bilaterally applied to the DLPFC will improve autonomic balance probably through improved frontal inhibition of the ANS activity, and will be manifested in an increased length of cardiointervals and their variability, and in higher frequency-domain HRV in a form of increased HF power, decreased LF power, resulting in decreased LF/HF ratio, and in decreased SCL. Our post-12 TMS results showed significant increases in cardiac intervals variability measures and decrease of tonic SCL indicative of increased cardiac vagal control and reduced sympathetic arousal. Behavioral evaluations showed decreased irritability, hyperactivity, stereotype behavior and compulsive behavior ratings that correlated with several autonomic variables.

Abstract
Besides the well-known roles of oxytocin on birth, maternal bonding, and lactation, recent evidence shows that this hypothalamic hormone possesses cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and parasympathetic neuromodulation properties. In this study, we explore the heart rate fluctuations (HRF) in an endotoxemic rodent model that was accompanied by the administration of exogenous oxytocin. The assessment of HRF has been widely used as an indirect measure of the cardiac autonomic function. In this context, adult male Dark Agouti rats were equipped with a telemetric transmitter to continuously and remotely measure the electrocardiogram, temperature, and locomotion. In a between-subjects experimental design, rats received the following peripheral treatment: saline solution as a vehicle (V); lipopolysaccharide (LPS); oxytocin (Ox); lipopolysaccharide + oxytocin (LPS+Ox). Linear and non-linear parameters of HRF were estimated starting 3h before to 24h after treatments. Our results showed that exogenous oxytocin does not modify by itself the HRF of oxytocin-treated rats in comparison to vehicle-treated rats. However, in animals undergoing endotoxemia it: a) provokes a less anticorrelated pattern in HRF, b) decreased mean heart rate, c) moderated the magnitude and duration of the LPS-induced hyperthermia, and d) increased locomotion, up to 6h after the LPS injection. The less anticorrelated pattern in the HRF and decreased mean heart rate may reflect a cardiac pacemaker coupling with cholinergic influences mediated by oxytocin during LPS-induced endotoxemia. Finally, the anti-lethargic and long-term temperature moderating effects of the administration of oxytocin during endotoxemia could be a consequence of the systemic anti-inflammatory properties of oxytocin.

Abstract
It is suggested that salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) may be a marker of sympathoadrenal medullary system activity. Thus, it can be a possible relationship sAA and anxiety disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate sAA in children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and healthy controls. Thirty drug-free youths, aged 8-16 years, who were diagnosed as any anxiety disorders and 36 healthy controls with similar socio-demographic characteristics were included in this study. The sAA was found to be significantly increased in anxiety group compared to control group. However, there was no correlation between sAA and any anxiety scores of the scales. Present study suggested that anxiety disorders in youths may be associated with increased autonomic activity.

Abstract
In healthy individuals, a reduction in cardiovascular output and a shift to parasympathetic/vagal dominant activity is observed across nocturnal sleep. This cardiac autonomic profile, often measured by heart rate variability (HRV), has been associated with significant benefits for the cardiovascular system. However, little is known about the autonomic profile during daytime sleep. Here, we investigated the autonomic profile and short-term reliability of HRV during daytime naps in 66 healthy young adults. Participants took an 80-120 min polysomnographically recorded nap at 1:30 pm. Beat-by-beat RR interval values (RR), high (HF) and low frequency (LF) power, total power (TP), HF normalized units (HF(nu)), and the LF/HF ratio were obtained for 5 min during presleep wakefulness and during nap sleep stages (N2, N3, REM). A subsample of 37 participants took two additional naps with 2 weeks between recordings. We observed lengthening of the RR, higher HF and HF(nu), and lower LF/HF during NREM, compared with REM and wake, and a marked reduction of LF and TP during N3. Intraclass correlation coefficients highlighted a short-term stability of RR and HF ranging across sleep stages between 0.52-0.76 and 0.52-0.80, respectively. Our results suggest that daytime napping in healthy young adults is associated with dynamic changes in the autonomic profile, similar to those seen during nocturnal sleep. Moreover, a reliable intraindividual measure of autonomic cardiac activity can be obtained by just a single daytime nap depending on specific parameters and recording purposes. Nap methodology may be a new and promising tool to explore sleep-dependent, autonomic fluctuations in healthy and at-risk populations.

Abstract
The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a complex decision-making task in which monetary wins and losses guide the development of strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate hemodynamic responses of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) during performance of the IGT using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Participants comprised 13 patients and 15 healthy control subjects who were matched for age, sex, handedness, and intelligence quotient. Relative changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb and deoxy-Hb) levels in the frontal region were measured using a 46-channel NIRS system. All subjects were evaluated using NIRS during a verbal fluency task (VFT) and the IGT. During performance of the IGT, BD patients showed significantly decreased oxy-Hb levels in the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and left prefrontal cortex (PFC) compared with normal control subjects. However, during the VFT, patients with BD showed no significant changes in oxy-Hb levels compared with control subjects. Changes in oxy-Hb levels in the bilateral OFC and the PFC during the IGT were negatively correlated with total scores on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D). Although the IGT was useful for differentiating patients with BP from control subjects, no significant differences in autonomic activity were observed.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) has been recognised as a non-invasive method for assessing cardiac autonomic regulation. Aiming to characterize HRV changes at labour in women, we studied 10 minute ECG recordings from young mothers (n=30) at the third trimester of pregnancy (P) or during augmentation of labour (L) (n=30). Data of the L group were collected when no-contractions (L-NC) or the contractile activity (L-C) was manifested. Accordingly, the inter-beat interval (IBI) time series were processed to estimate relevant parameters of HRV such as the mean IBI (IBI¯), the mean heart rate HR¯, the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) in IBIs, the natural logarithm of high-frequency component (LnHF), the short-term scaling parameters from detrended fluctuation and magnitude and sign analyses such as (α1, α1(MAG), α1(SIGN)), and the sample entropy (SampEn). We found statistical differences (p<0.05) for RMSSD among P and L-NC/L-C groups (25 ± 13 vs. 36 ± 14/34 ± 16 ms) and for LnHF between P and L-NC (5.37 ± 1.15 vs. 6.05 ± 0.86 ms(2)). Likewise, we identified statistical differences (p<0.05) for α1(SIGN) among P and L-NC/L-C groups (0.19 ± 0.20 vs. 0.32 ± 0.17/0.39 ± 0.13). By contrast, L-NC and L-C groups showed statistical differences (p<0.05) in α1(MAG) (0.67 ± 0.12 vs. 0.79 ± 0.12), and SampEn (1.62 ± 0.26 vs. 1.20 ± 0.44). These results suggest that during labour, despite preserving a concomitant non-linear influence, the maternal short-term cardiac autonomic regulation becomes weakly anticorrelated (as indicated by α1(SIGN)); furthermore, an increased vagally mediated activity is observed (as indicated by RMSSD and LnHF), which may reflect a cholinergic pathway activation owing to the use of oxytocin or the anti-inflammatory cholinergic response triggered during labour.

Abstract
The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is involved in behavioral and physiological responses to emotional stress through its action in several limbic structures, including the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). Nevertheless, the role of CRF1 and CRF2 receptors in the BNST in cardiovascular adjustments during aversive threat is unknown. Therefore, in the present study we investigated the involvement of CRF receptors within the BNST in cardiovascular responses evoked by acute restraint stress in rats. For this, we evaluated the effects of bilateral treatment of the BNST with selective agonists and antagonists of either CRF1 or CRF2 receptors in the arterial pressure and heart rate increase and the decrease in tail skin temperature induced by restraint stress. Microinjection of the selective CRF1 receptor antagonist CP376395 into the BNST reduced the pressor and tachycardiac responses caused by restraint. Conversely, BNST treatment with the selective CRF1 receptor agonist CRF increased restraint-evoked arterial pressure and HR responses and reduced the fall in tail skin temperature response. All effects of CRF were inhibited by local BNST pretreatment with CP376395. The selective CRF2 receptor antagonist antisalvagine-30 reduced the arterial pressure increase and the fall in tail skin temperature. The selective CRF2 receptor agonist urocortin-3 increased restraint-evoked pressor and tachycardiac responses and reduced the drop in cutaneous temperature. All effects of urocortin-3 were abolished by local BNST pretreatment with antisalvagine-30. These findings indicate an involvement of both CRF1 and CRF2 receptors in the BNST in cardiovascular adjustments during emotional stress.

Abstract
Comorbidity between mood disorders and cardiovascular disease has been described extensively. However, available antidepressants can have cardiovascular side effects. Treatment with selective inhibitors of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) induces antidepressant effects, but whether the antidepressant-like effects of these drugs are followed by cardiovascular changes has not been previously investigated. Here, we tested in male rats exposed to chronic variable stress (CVS) the hypothesis that nNOS blockers are advantageous compared with conventional antidepressants in terms of cardiovascular side effects. We compared the effects of chronic treatment with the preferential nNOS inhibitor 7-nitroindazole (7-NI) with those evoked by the conventional antidepressant fluoxetine on alterations that are considered as markers of depression (immobility in the forced swimming test, FST, decreased body weight gain and increased plasma corticosterone concentration) and cardiovascular changes caused by CVS. Rats were exposed to a 14-day CVS protocol, while being concurrently treated daily with either 7-NI (30 mg/kg) or fluoxetine (10 mg/kg). Fluoxetine and 7-NI prevented the increase in immobility in the FST induced by CVS and reduced plasma corticosterone concentration in stressed rats. Both these treatments also prevented the CVS-evoked reduction of the depressor response to vasodilator agents and baroreflex changes. Fluoxetine and 7-NI-induced cardiovascular changes independent of stress exposure, including cardiac autonomic imbalance, increased intrinsic heart rate and vascular sympathetic modulation, a reduction of the pressor response to vasoconstrictor agents, and impairment of baroreflex activity. Altogether, these findings provide evidence that fluoxetine and 7-NI have similar effects on the depression-like state induced by CVS and on cardiovascular function.
