Comparison of the shear bond strengths of two different polyetheretherketone (PEEK) framework materials and CAD-CAM veneer materials

BACKGROUND

This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of two different polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and CAD-CAM materials after aging.

METHODS

A total of 42 frameworks were designed and milled from 2 different PEEK discs (Copra Peek, P and BioHPP, B). P and B frameworks were divided into 3 subgroups (n = 7). 14 slices were prepared each from feldspathic ceramic (Vitablocs Mark II, VM), hybrid nanoceramic (Cerasmart, CS), and polymer-infiltrated ceramic (Vita Enamic, VE) blocks. After surface preparations, the slices were cemented to P and B surfaces. The samples were subjected to thermal aging (5000 cycles). SBS of all the samples was measured. Fractured surfaces were examined by SEM/EDX analysis. The Shapiro-Wilk, Two-way Robust ANOVA and Bonferroni correction tests were used to analyze the data (a = .05).

RESULTS

Frameworks, ceramics, and frameworks x ceramics had significant differences (p < 0.05). The highest SBS value was seen in B-VM (p < 0.05). VM offered the highest SBS with both P and B. The differences between P-VM, P-CS, P-VE and B-CS and B-VE were insignificant (p > 0.05). According to EDX analysis, ytterbium and fluorine was seen in B content, unlike P. While VM and CS contained fluorine, barium, and aluminum; sodium and aluminum were observed in the VE structure.

CONCLUSION

Bonding of P and B with VM offers higher SBS. VM, CS and VE did not make any difference in SBS for P, however VM showed a significant difference for B.

Determination of Shear Bond Strength between PEEK Composites and Veneering Composites for the Production of Dental Restorations

We studied the shear bond strength (SBS) of two PEEK composites (BioHPP, BioHPP plus) with three veneering composites: Visio.lign, SR Nexco and VITA VM LC, depending on the surface treatment: untreated, sandblasted with 110 μm Al₂O₃, sandblasted and cleaned ultrasonically in 80% ethanol, with or without adhesive Visio.link, with applied Visio.link and MKZ primer. For the BioHPP plus, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed a slightly lower glass transition temperature (T_g 150.4 ± 0.4 °C) and higher melting temperature (T_m 339.4 ± 0.6 °C) than those of BioHPP (T_g 151.3 ± 1.3 °C, T_m 338.7 ± 0.2 °C). The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed a slightly higher storage modulus of BioHPP (E' 4.258 ± 0.093 GPa) than of BioHPP plus (E' 4.193 ± 0.09 GPa). The roughness was the highest for the untreated BioHPP plus, and the lowest for the polished BioHPP. The highest hydrophobicity was achieved on the sandblasted BioHPP plus, whereas the highest hydrophilicity was found on the untreated BioHPP. The highest SBSs were determined for BioHPP and Visio.lign, adhesive Visio.link (26.31 ± 4.17 MPa) or MKZ primer (25.59 ± 3.17 MPa), with VITA VM LC, MKZ primer and Visio.link (25.51 ± 1.94 MPa), and ultrasonically cleaned, with Visio.link (26.28 ± 2.94 MPa). For BioHPP plus, the highest SBS was determined for a sandblasted surface, cleaned ultrasonically, with the SR Nexco and Visio.link (23.39 ± 2.80 MPa).

Soft tissue integration with a hybrid abutment using the "one abutment-one time" therapeutic protocol: case series

OBJECTIVE

To describe a procedure that uses a definitive BioHPP hybrid abutment (polyether ether ketone [PEEK] reinforced with ceramic nanoparticles), to obtain a hermetic mucous seal with the peri-implant soft tissues. Method and materials: Between July 2017 and December 2019, seven patients aged between 40 and 60 years, who needed prosthetic rehabilitation in the esthetic zone, were treated. Among the various therapeutic solutions offered, patients chose an immediate or conventional implant rehabilitation using the "one abutment-one time" technique with the hybrid SKY elegance implant abutment (bredent medical). Ten implants were placed, five with immediate loading including two postextraction, and five in a conventional/classic loading protocol. The protocol required that the finishing margin of the provisional restoration was positioned approximately 1 to 2 mm from the implant platform, allowing the tissues to heal around the ceramic-reinforced PEEK abutment. After 6 months for the implants with immediate loading, and 3 months for those with conventional loading, the provisional restorations were replaced with definitive zirconia-ceramic prostheses.

RESULTS

The clinical evaluation on the 10 implants showed that the reinforced PEEK abutments integrated well with the peri-implant tissues, and were healthy, without plaque, and with no bleeding on probing. An average probing depth of 1.0 mm was observed for nine of the ten placed implants, and for the tenth the implant probing depth was 1.5 mm.

CONCLUSIONS

The ceramic-reinforced PEEK abutments BioHPP SKY elegance associated with the one-time therapeutic protocol is a valid alternative to traditional implant loading procedures, leading to an effective peri-implant hermetic mucous seal. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Post and Core Restorations: A 3D Accuracy Analysis between Heat-Pressed and CAD-CAM Fabrication Methods

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) based post and core restorations using heat-pressed and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) methods.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Post and core patterns (n=10) were fabricated using an acrylic pattern resin and each pattern was scanned to generate a resin pattern standard tessellation file (STL-R) to be used as the standard control group for the 3D profilometric analysis. The STL-R files were loaded into a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) machine and a milling disk made of a modified PEEK-based polymer with 20% ceramic fillers was milled into post and core restorations. Each original post and core resin pattern was sprued, invested and pressed using pellets made of the same PEEK material and a PEEK pressing unit. The resulting post and core restorations from the CAD-CAM and heat-pressed methods were scanned to generate STL-M (milled) and STL-P (heat-pressed) files, respectively. STL-M and STL-P files were digitally aligned and compared to STL-R files using a 3D analysis software. The 3D spatial distribution deviation was exported, and the statistical analysis was performed using the 95% CI deviation distribution from the Gaussian function subtraction. The statistical outcome for each group was merged and a 3D color-coded map was created showing the average deviation (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The heat-pressed post and core restoration showed 79 ±6 % of the areas within ±50 μm while the CAD-CAM post-and-core restoration showed 66 ±9 %. The CAD-CAM post and core restorations show 6 ±5 % of the areas above the ideal for marginal adaptation limit threshold of 200μm, while only 0.7 ±0.7 % was found for the heat-pressed.

CONCLUSIONS

The heat-pressed method to manufacture PEEK-based post and core restorations showed higher accuracy than the CAD-CAM method. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Comparison of the Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Zirconia and Composite Resin to Polyether Ether Ketone: An In Vitro Study

Aim:

The aim of the study was to compare the shear bond strength of composite resin bonded to polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and zirconia, and also to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the shear bond strength.

Materials and Methods:

A total of 22 zirconia (Group 1) and 22 PEEK (Group 2) specimens (disks of 10 mm in diameter and 10 mm in thickness) were machine milled using computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) from commercially available zirconia and PEEK. These specimens were air abraded with 110-μm aluminum oxide. Following which these two groups were subdivided into four groups, that is, Group 1A: 11 zirconia specimens before thermocycling, Group 1B: 11 zirconia specimens after thermocycling, Group 2A: 11 PEEK specimens before thermocycling, and Group 2B: 11 PEEK specimens after thermocycling. These four groups of specimens were embedded in an acrylic block, and bonding agent was applied over the upper surfaces of the disks of each of these specimens. Composite resin was then cured, and then Group 1B and group 2B were thermocycled under a standard temperature. The bond strength of the specimen was tested using universal testing machine.

Result:

The result showed that there was no significant difference in shear bond strength between the groups, although higher shear bond strength was observed in the PEEK group.

Conclusion:

Shear bond strength of PEEK is similar to zirconia. The results suggest that the pretreatment method and primers used were effective in improving the bonding of resin cements to zirconia ceramic and the bonding properties of the veneering resin to the PEEK surface.

A potential application of materials based on a polymer and CAD/CAM composite resins in prosthetic dentistry

PURPOSE

A bioactive high performance polymer (BioHPP) and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composite resin materials are a relatively new class of dental biomaterials, that are biocompatible and have good aesthetic features. In this review paper, we will summarize literature and publication data on the characteristics of the mentioned materials, as well as their potential application in the dental prosthetics.

STUDY SELECTION

Available studies and literature reviews from PubMed, SCIndex, Scopus and Google Scholar corresponding to polyetheretherketone (PEEK), high-performance polymers, reinforced composite materials, composite materials, resins, glass-fiber reinforced materials, CAD/CAM materials, dental implants, removable and fixed dental were reviewed.

RESULTS

To avoid many disadvantages of metals and their alloys in dental practice, such as inadequate color, high density, thermal conductivity and possible allergic reactions, materials based on polymers (such as BioHPP), and CAD/CAM composite resins are being developed. These materials have significantly better aesthetics and physical-mechanical properties. They are biocompatible materials that are lightweight, resistant, durable, exhibit high bending and compression resistance.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of CAD/CAM composite resin materials and BioHPP in dentistry has begun recently, so the data about their potential clinical use are limited. Most of their features have been demonstrated through laboratory testing, while clinical studies are relatively scarce, so the need for further clinical trials is emphasized.

The Effect of Surface Pretreatment and Water Storage on the Bonding Strength of a Resin Composite Cement to Modified PEEK

The bonding quality of bonding to polyether ether ketone (PEEK) after different surface treatments and adhesive regimens was assessed through shear bond strength.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty modified PEEK disks were cut out of BioHPP round blanks using CAD-CAM procedures. Disks were subjected to the following surface pretreatments: (A) Sandblasting with alumina (Rocatec) and application of adhesive bonding agent visiolink (control group) (B) Sandblasting with silica-modified alumina (Cojet), application of silane agent Espe Sil, followed by application of adhesive bonding agent Visio-Bond (C) Sandblasting with silica-modified alumina (Cojet), application of silane containing primer-adhesive Clearfil Ceramic Primer, followed by application of adhesive bonding agent visiolink. A dual-curing resin composite cement (combolign) was luted to all treated surfaces. Each group was further divided to subgroups of 10 specimens which were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 150 days without further thermocycling. Specimens were then submitted to shear bond strength testing.

RESULTS

Group (B) was statistically significant different from group (A) (control group). Water storage condition had no significant influence on final bond strength.

CONCLUSIONS

Use of different conditioning protocols had a significant effect on the final bond strength of composite resin cement to PEEK surface. Water storage did not significantly influence bonding.

The Use of a Modified Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK) as an Alternative Framework Material for Removable Dental Prostheses. A Clinical Report

This clinical report presents a modified poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) as an alternative material for the fabrication of distal extension removable dental prosthesis (RDP) frameworks. This material can be used for patients allergic to metals, or who dislike the metallic taste, the weight, and the unpleasant metal display of the denture framework and retentive clasps. This modified PEEK material, known as BioHPP, is a biocompatible, nonallergic, rigid material, with flexibility comparable to bone, high polishing and low absorption properties, low plaque affinity, and good wear resistance. It has been used for years in orthopedics and medical technology. BioHPP frameworks can be constructed either via CAD/CAM manufacturing or via the conventional lost wax technique. The clinical use of a BioHPP RDP framework is presented as an alternative for the treatment of a distal extension case.
