Extensive investigation on extraction and leaching kinetics study of Cu and Cr from spent catalyst using acetic acid

The application of organic acids towards the extraction of both Cu and Cr from the Cu-Cr spent catalyst was investigated. A series of organic acid such as acetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, ascorbic acid and tartaric acid were adopted, and after screening, acetic acid showed a profound effect on dissolution of either of the metals over other green reagents. The spent catalyst was characterized by XRD and SEM-EDAX to confirm the existence of the oxide phase due to both Cu and Cr metals. For efficient dissolution of metals, the critical parameters such as agitation speed, acetic acid concentration, temperature, particle size, as well as S/L ratio affecting on it was systematically investigated. It was observed that at approximately 99.99% of Cu along with 62% of Cr was extracted at the optimised conditions (agitation speed: 800 rpm, 1.0 M CH3COOH, 353 K temperature, particle size of (75-105) µm and S/L: 2% (W/V). The leach residue obtained after the first stage of leaching was analysed by SEM-EDAX and XRD, indicating no peaks due to the presence of Cu ensures complete dissolution of Cu at the optimum conditions. Further, to attain the quantitative leaching yield of Cr, the leach residue obtained after the first stage was sequentially investigated using varied acetic acid concentration and temperature. Leaching kinetics was established based on obtained results at the varied operating parameters, and it revealed support for fitting a model of the leaching data to the shrinking core chemical control model (R2 = 0.99) for both metals (Cu and Cr). The activation energy determined to be 34.05 kJ mol-1 and 43.31 kJ mol-1 for Cu and Cr, respectively, validates the proposed leaching kinetics mechanism.

Repairing of rutin to the toxicity of combined F-53B and chromium pollution on the biofilm formed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The wastewater discharge from the process of chrome plating, which contains 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B) and chromium (Cr), may be toxic to biofilm. In this study we found that the biofilm formed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 was inhibited by exposure to a combination of F-53B and Cr(VI). The combined pollution damaged the cell membranes and the structure of the biofilm, and inhibited the production of the Pseudomonas quinolone-based signal, which affected biofilm formation. Moreover, the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances decreased as a result of this combined exposure. Exposure to F-53B and Cr(VI) individually or in combination could induce the excessive accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the ROS positive rate of the bacteria increased under the treatment with 0.2 mmol/L of Cr(VI) and 250 nmol/L of F-53B, respectively. In addition, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were enhanced for scavenging ROS in the bacteria that were exposed to Cr(VI) and F-53B. As an antioxidant, rutin was used to repair the toxicity of Cr(VI) and F-53B towards the biofilm formed by the bacteria. When rutin was added to the bacteria medium, with either Cr(VI) or F-53B as pollutant, or with the combined pollutants, the extracellular protein content of the bacteria recovered to 0.84, 0.94, and 0.85 times that of the control, respectively. Meanwhile, the accumulation of ROS and the activities of SOD and CAT decreased, which indicated that the addition of rutin can alleviate the oxidative stress and promote the antioxidant stress system.

Heavy metal pollution risk of desulfurized steel slag as a soil amendment in cycling use of solid wastes

The by-product of wet flue gas desulfurization, desulfurized steel slag (DS), had chemical characteristics like natural gypsum that can be used to improve saline-sodic soil. However, contamination risk of heavy metals for cycling utilization of DS in agriculture was concerned mostly. Both pot and field experiments were conducted for evaluating the potential pollution risk of DS as the amendment of saline-sodic soil. Results showed that application of DS decreased the contents of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb, while significantly increasing chromium (Cr) content in DS-amended soils. The field experiment demonstrated that the migration of heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb) in the soil profile was negligible. The application of DS at the dosage of 22.5-225 tons/ha significantly increased the Cr content in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) but lower than the national standard for feed in China (GB 13078-2017). DS altered the chemical fraction of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, and Pb), transferred exchangeable, reducible into oxidizable and residual forms in DS-amended soil. Application of DS combined with fulvic acid (FA) could effectively reduce the movement of heavy metals in soil and the accumulation of Cr in alfalfa. Based on our results, DS was a safe and feasible material for agricultural use and presented relatively little pollution risk of heavy metals. However, the results also showed that DS to a certain extent had a potential environmental risk of Cr if larger dosages of DS were used.

Chemical speciation determines combined cytotoxicity: Examples of biochar and arsenic/chromium

As both electron donors and acceptors, biochars (BCs) may interact with multivalent metal ions in the environment, causing changes in ionic valence states and resulting in unknown combined toxicity. Therefore, we systematically investigated the interaction between BCs and Cr (Cr(III) & Cr(VI)) or As (As(III) & As(V)) and their combined cytotoxicity in human colorectal mucosal (FHC) cells. Our results suggest that the redox-induced valence state change is a critical factor in the combined cytotoxicity of BCs with Cr/As. Specifically, when Cr(VI) was adsorbed on BCs, 86.4 % of Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III). In contrast, As(III) was partially oxidized to As(V) with a ratio of 37.2 %, thus reaching a reaction equilibrium. Meanwhile, only As(V) was released in the cell, which could cause more As(III) to be oxidized. As both Cr(III) and As(V) are less toxic than their corresponding counterparts Cr(VI) and As(III), different redox interactions between BCs and Cr/As and release profiles between BCs and Cr/As together lead to reduced combined cytotoxicity of BP-BC-Cr(VI) and BP-BC-As(III). It suggests that the valence state changes of metal ions due to redox effects is one of the parameters to be focused on when studying the combined toxicity of complexes of BCs with different heavy metal ions.

Tolerance of phyllospheric Wickerhamomyces anomalus to BDE-3 and heavy metals

Few research have focused on the potential microorganism and gene resources for plant resistance to polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and heavy metal (HM) co-contamination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of phyllospheric Wickerhamomyces anomalus bioremediation ability on PBDE and HM co-contamination. The results showed that the toleration capability of W. anomalus to cadmium (Cd²⁺) was higher than that to chromium (Cr) or 4-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE-3) contamination. The threshold levels of W. anomalus tolerance to BDE-3, Cd²⁺, and Cr were 30 mg/L, 500 mg/L, 30 mg/L, respectively. The use of the higher concentration of BDE-3 (30 mg/L) as a carbon source may improve tolerance to Cd²⁺ and Cr (10 mg/L Cd²⁺ and 10 mg/L Cr). Overexpression of Wapdr15 gene of ABCG subfamily from W. anomalus improved the tolerance to BDE-3 (10 mg/mL) and Cd²⁺ (0.5 mg/mL) significantly in transgenic tobacco lines. The synergism effect of BDE-3 and Cd²⁺ stress existed similarly in W. anomalus and transgenic lines. The findings suggest that W. anomalus should be taken into account for providing an efficient method in improving crops' tolerance during PBDE and HM co-contamination in soil.

Development and validation of a biomonitoring method to measure As, Cr, and Ni in human urine samples by ICP-UCT-MS

We developed an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method using Universal Cell Technology (UCT) with a PerkinElmer NexION ICP-MS, to measure arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) in human urine samples. The advancements of the UCT allowed us to expand the calibration range to make the method applicable for both low concentrations of biomonitoring applications and high concentrations that may be observed from acute exposures and emergency response. Our method analyzes As and Ni in kinetic energy discrimination (KED) mode with helium (He) gas, and Cr in dynamic reaction cell (DRC) mode with ammonia (NH₃) gas. The combination of these elements is challenging because a carbon source, ethanol (EtOH), is required for normalization of As ionization in urine samples, which creates a spectral overlap (⁴⁰Ar¹²C⁺) on ⁵²Cr. This method additionally improved lab efficiency by combining elements from two of our previously published methods(Jarrett et al., 2007; Quarles et al., 2014) allowing us to measure Cr and Ni concentrations in urine samples collected as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) beginning with the 2017-2018 survey cycle. We present our rigorous validation of the method selectivity and accuracy using National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Materials (SRM), precision using in-house prepared quality control materials, and a discussion of the use of a modified UCT, a BioUCell, to address an ion transmission phenomenon we observed on the NexION 300 platform when using higher elemental concentrations and high cell gas pressures. The rugged method detection limits, calculated from measurements in more than 60 runs, for As, Cr, and Ni are 0.23 μg L-1, 0.19 μg L-1, and 0.31 μg L-1, respectively.

Effects of accelerated aging on characteristics, leaching, and toxicity of commercial lead chromate pigmented microplastics

It is of environmental significance to study the leaching performance of additives from microplastics (MPs) and further evaluate the toxicity of leachate to microalgae. Here, we investigated the effects of accelerated aging on characteristics, leaching, and toxicity of commercial lead chromate pigmented MPs. Results show that aging of MPs caused surface cracks and fragmentation, increased their surface area and carbonyl contents, and promoted the release of lead chromate pigment. Chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) tend to leach under acidic condition, rather than neutral and alkali environment. Aging treatment facilitates the leaching performance and a high concentration of NaCl solution also favors the leaching process. Toxicology experiments demonstrate that only high concentration of leachate (>10 μg L^-1) exerted significant inhibitory influence (p < 0.005) on cell photosynthesis of Microcystis aeruginosa. The growth inhibition of algal cells remarkably increased with increasing leachate concentrations. We observed more inhibiting effects on cell growth and photosynthesis using the leachates of aged MPs. Longer aging time leads to more release of Cr and Pb, rendering higher toxicity to microalgae. These novel findings will benefit us from assessing the leaching behavior of additives in MPs and their toxicological risks to aquatic organisms.

Effects of chironomid larvae and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri bioturbation on the distribution and flux of chromium at the sediment-water interface

The impacts of chironomid larvae and the tubificid worm Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri on the distribution and flux of the heavy metal chromium (Cr) across the sediment-water interface were investigated with a 21-day laboratory microcosm experiment. The two studied species feature different bioturbation modes involving bioirrigation and upward bioconveyance. The Cr concentrations in the overlying water and pore water were measured and compared using treatments with bioturbation by a single species and by combinations of both species and a treatment with no organisms. The results indicated that both bioturbation modes significantly increased the Cr concentrations in the overlying water and pore water. The overlying water had lower Cr concentrations than the pore water. Little variation in the Cr concentrations was observed in the treatment without organisms. Both species enhanced the Cr flux from the pore water to the overlying water. The worm treatments had a great impact on the Cr concentration in the overlying water through intensive upward conveyance activity, while the chironomid larvae treatments exerted significant effects on the Cr variation in the pore water and Cr flux across the interface via bioirrigation activity. These findings reveal the importance of bioturbation in biogeochemical processes in freshwater ecosystems.

Heavy metal toxicity from the leather industry in Bangladesh: a case study of human exposure in Dhaka industrial area

Activities in the Bangladeshi leather industries have the potential to cause chemical pollutions thereby deteriorating the working environments, the surrounding residential areas, or even foodstuffs. Therefore, it is important to determine the chemical exposures among the industry workers and residents of the surrounding areas who may be directly or indirectly impacted by the contaminated environment. This study focused on evaluating the hazard arising from exposure to metals due to industrial contamination. Tissue samples of hair and nails were collected from both the leather industry workers and residents in the vicinity of the industries. Using chromium as an indicator of contamination/exposure from the leather industry, it was the most significant metal contaminant for industry workers ranging from 21.85 to 483 mg/kg and for industry-neighboring residents at 6.01 to 296.16 mg/kg. Both the workers and neighboring residents were found to be excessively exposed (P < 0.05) to chromium compared with the investigated control group of people living in a distant village area which had no industrial establishments.

Phosphorus Enhances Cr(VI) Uptake and Accumulation in Leersia hexandra Swartz

The effects of P supplementation on chromium(VI) uptake by Leersia hexandra Swartz were studied using pot-culture experiment. P-deficiency and zero-P addition controls were included. The Cr(VI) uptake followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Compare with the control, the P-supply decreased the Michaelis constant (Km) by 16.9% and the P-deficiency decreased the maximum uptake velocity (V_max) by 18%, which indicated no inhibition and competition between P and Cr(VI) uptake by L. hexandra. Moreover, there were a synergistic action between P and Cr(VI) suggests that Cr(VI) uptake by the roots of L. hexandra may be an active process. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) and the transport factor (TF') increased with the increase in P supply. The highest BCF was 3.6-folds higher than the control, indicating that the additional P contribute to a higher ability of L. hexandra transporting Cr from root to the aboveground parts.

Assessment of Cr pollution in tributary sediment cores in the Three Gorges Reservoir combining geochemical baseline and in situ DGT

The mobility and transfer of trace metals in sediments are vital to understanding trace metals environmental behavior in water environment. However, as a predominant aquatic carcinogen, an effective method for assessing the release and deposition for Cr at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is still not clearly understood. Here we established a comprehensive methodology to evaluate the release risk of Cr at the SWI combining regional geochemical baseline (RGB) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). Sediment cores and water samples were collected in the two tributaries and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir, which is the world's largest man-made hydroelectric station. Results showed that the calculated Cr carcinogenic risks in surface water did not exceed US EPA maximum recommended level. The RGB of Cr (85.53 ± 14.44 mg/kg) were calculated and the differentials between Cr concentration and RGB in surface sediments showed the average anthropogenic contribution rate was 6.03% and the upstream of Meixi River (MX-S) and mainstream were influenced by anthropogenic activities. The net diffusive flux using DGT showed that Cr in the midstream of Caotang River and MX had the potential to move upwards into the overlying water. Furthermore, combining the results of differential (Cr concentration vs. RGB) and the net flux, MX-S was the only site with a risk of Cr release. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to combine RGB and DGT to scientifically assess metal release at SWI and provided a new perspective to comprehensively assess metal pollution in water environment.

Comparative study of remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil using electrokinetics combined with bioremediation

The purpose of this research is to design a new bioremediation-electrokinetic (Bio-EK) remediation process to increase treatment efficiency of chromium contamination in soil. Upon residual chromium analysis, it is shown that traditional electrokinetic-PRB system (control) does not have high efficiency (80.26%) to remove Cr(VI). Bio-electrokinetics of exogenous add with reduction bacteria Microbacterium sp. Y2 and electrokinetics can enhance treatment efficiency Cr(VI) to 90.67% after 8 days' remediation. To optimize the overall performance, integrated bio-electrokinetics were designed by synergy with 200 g humic substances (HS) into the systems. According to our results, Cr(VI) (98.33%) was effectively removed via electrokinetics. Moreover, bacteria and humic substances are natural, sustainable, and economical enhancement agents. The research results indicated that the use of integrated bio-electrokinetics is an effective method to remediate chromium-contaminated soils.

Polyaniline-based adsorbents for removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution: a mini review

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a common hazardous contaminant in the environment and carcinogenic or mutagenic to aquatic animals and human beings. Therefore, the removal and detoxification of Cr(VI) have been attracting increasing attention of researchers. Among various conducting polymers, polyaniline (PANI)-based adsorbents have shown an excellent performance on the removal of Cr(VI) because of their redox properties, eased synthesis, and favorable biocompatibility. In this review, the characteristics of various PANI-based adsorbents were described, including PANI-modified nanofiber mats and membranes, PANI/bio-adsorbents, PANI/magnetic adsorbents, PANI/carbon adsorbents, PANI-modified clay composites, and PANI-inorganic hybrid composites. The mechanisms for the detoxification and adsorption of Cr(VI) were also discussed. The results indicated the potential applications of PANI-based adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI).
