Synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of new chitosan derivative bearing diphenyl pyrazole moiety

This work reports the synthesis of a new pyrazole derivative by reacting 5-amino-1,3-diphenyl pyrazole with succinic anhydride and bearing the product chemically on the chitosan chains via amide linkage to achieve a new chitosan derivative (DPPS-CH). The prepared chitosan derivative was analyzed by IR, NMR, elemental analysis, XRD, TGA-DTG, and SEM. As compared with chitosan, DPPS-CH showed an amorphous and porous structure. Coats-Redfern results showed that the thermal activation energy for the first decomposition of DPPS-CH is 43.72 KJ mol^-1 lower than that required for chitosan (88.32 KJ mol^-1), indicating the accelerating effect of DPPS on the thermal decomposition of DPPS-CH. The DPPS-CH manifested a powerful wide spectrum antimicrobial potential against pathogenic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and Candida albicans at minute concentrations (MIC = 50 μg mL^-1) compared to chitosan (MIC = 100 μg mL^-1). The MTT assay proved the toxic properties of DPPS-CH against a cancer cell line (MCF-7) at a minute concentration (IC50 = 15.14 μg mL^-1) while affecting normal cells (WI-38) at seven times this concentration (IC50 = 107.8 μg mL^-1). According to the current findings, the chitosan derivative developed in this work appears to be a promising material for use in biological domains.

Comparative study on fuel characteristics and pyrolysis kinetics of corn residue-based hydrochar produced via microwave hydrothermal carbonization

Corn residues are an important source of bioenergy. Due to their highly diverse lignocellulosic structures, the hydrochar produced from microwave-assisted carbonization of different corn residues may have distinct fuel properties and pyrolysis kinetics. This study comprehensively investigated the effect of processing temperature on the basic fuel properties of hydrochar and examined the pyrolysis behavior of hydrochar as a precursor through kinetic analysis. The results indicate that the fuel quality of corn straw hydrochar prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization at 230 °C was significantly improved over that of its feedstock, with a higher heating value of approximately 20.7 MJ/kg. Hydrochar prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of corn cob at 230 °C presents noticeable environmental advantages because it contains the lowest ash and nitrogen contents (0.5% and 0.5%, respectively) and lower sulfur content (0.05%). Moreover, regarding the kinetic modeling, the Doyle and Coats-Redfern models, which are both first-order and single-step kinetic models, were identified as satisfactory in interpreting the key pyrolysis kinetic parameters. Additionally, the microwave-assisted hydrothermal process increased the apparent activation energy of hydrochar due to the increase in crystallinity and the increase in the number of CC and CO bonds.

Pyrolysis of Mixed Plastic Waste: I. Kinetic Study

Plastic wastes have become one of the biggest global environmental issues and thus recycling such massive quantities is targeted. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) are considered among the main types of plastic wastes. Since pyrolysis is one of the most promising recycling techniques, this work aims to build knowledge on the co-pyrolysis of mixed polymers using two model-fitting (Criado and Coats–Redfern) methods. Seventeen co-pyrolysis tests using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at 60 K/min for different mixed compositions of LDPE, HDPE, PP, and PS were conducted. It was observed that the pyrolysis of the pure polymer samples occurs at different temperature ranges in the following order: PS < PP < LDPE < HDPE. However, compared to pure polymer samples, the co-pyrolysis of all-polymer mixtures was delayed. In addition, the synergistic effect on the co-pyrolysis of polymer blends was reported. The Master plot of the Criado model was used to determine the most suitable reaction mechanism. Then, the Coats–Redfern model was used to efficiently obtain the kinetic parameters (R² ≥ 97.83%) and the obtained values of the activation energy of different polymer blends were ranging from 104 to 260 kJ/mol. Furthermore, the most controlling reaction mechanisms were in the following orders: First order reaction (F1), Contracting sphere (R3), and then Contracting cylinder (R2).

Halogen-Free Flame-Retardant Compounds. Thermal Decomposition and Flammability Behavior for Alternative Polyethylene Grades

The effect of six halogen-free flame retardant (FR) formulations was investigated on the thermal stability of two low-density polyethylenes (LDPE) and one linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen and air atmosphere. The relative data were combined with flammability properties and the overall performance of the FRs was correlated with the type of branching in the polyethylene grades and to their processing behavior. The thermal degradation kinetics was further determined based on the Kissinger and Coats-Redfern methods. In terms of flammability, the addition of a triazine derivative and ammonium polyphosphate at a loading of 35 wt. %. was found to be the most efficient, leading to UL 94 V0 ranking in the case of the LDPE grade produced in an autoclave reactor.
