Recycling of gas-to-liquid sludge as a potential organic amendment: Effect on soil and cotton properties under hyperarid conditions

Gas-to-liquid (GTL) sludge is a specific wastewater treatment by-product, which is generated during the industrial process of natural gas conversion to transportation fuels. This least studied sludge is pathogen-free and rich in organic carbon and plant nutrients. Therefore, it can be reused for soil enhancement as a sustainable management strategy to mitigate landfill gas emissions. In this field study, we compared the performance of soil treatments with GTL sludge to the more conventional chemical fertilizers and cow manure compost for the cultivation of cotton under hyperarid conditions. After a complete growing season, GTL sludge application resulted in the enhancement of soil properties and plant growth compared to conventional inputs. As such, there was a significant dose-dependent increase of soil organic matter (4.01% and 4.54%), phosphorus (534 and 1090 mg kg-1), and cumulative lint yield (4.68 and 5.67 t ha-1) for GTL sludge application rates of 1.5% and 3%, respectively. The produced fiber quality was adequate for an upland cotton variety (Gossypium hirsutum var. MAY 344) and appeared more dependent on the prevailing climate conditions than soil treatments. On the other hand, the adverse effects generally related to industrial sludge reuse were not significant and did not affect the designed agro-environmental system. Accordingly, plants grown on GTL sludge-amended soils showed lower antioxidant activity despite significant salinity increase. In addition, the concentrations of detected heavy metals in soil were within the standards' limits, which did not pose environmental issues under the described experimental conditions. Leachate analysis revealed no risks for groundwater contamination with phytotoxic metals, which were mostly retained by the soil matrix. Therefore, recycling GTL sludge as an organic amendment can be a sustainable solution to improve soil quality and lower carbon footprint. To reduce any environmental concerns, an application rate of 1.5% could be provisionally recommended since a two-fold increase in sludge dose did not result in a significant yield improvement.

Comparative analysis of metabolic mechanisms in the remediation of Cd-polluted alkaline soil in cotton field by biochar and biofertilizer

To screen environmentally friendly and efficient Cd pollution remediation material, the effects of BC and BF on soil Cd bio-availability and cotton Cd absorption were analyzed under Cd exposure. Besides, the differences in metabolic mechanisms by which biochar (BC) and biofertilizer (BF) affect Cd-contaminated soil and cotton were also analyzed. The results showed that the application of BC and BF increased cotton dry matter accumulation, boll number, and single boll weight, and reduced the Cd content in cotton roots, stems, leaves, and bolls. At harvest, the Cd content in cotton roots in the BC and BF groups reduced by 15.23% and 16.33%, respectively, compared with that in the control. This was attributed to the conversion of carbonate-bound Cd (carbon-Cd) and exchangeable Cd (EX-Cd) by BC and BF into residual Cd (Res-Cd). It should be noted that the soil available Cd (Ava-Cd) content in the BF group was lower than that in the BC group. The metabolomic analysis results showed that for BC vs BF, the relative abundance of differential metabolites Caffeic acid, Xanthurenic acid, and Shikimic acid in soil and cotton roots were up-regulated. Mantel test found that cotton root exudate l-Histinine was correlated with the enrichment of Cd in various organs of cotton. Therefore, the application of BC and BF can alleviate Cd stress by reducing soil Ava-Cd content and cotton's Cd uptake, and BF is superior to BC in reducing Cd content in soil and cotton organs. This study will provide a reference for the development of efficient techniques for the remediation of Cd-polluted alkaline soil, and provide a basis for subsequent metagenomics analysis.

Use of Ganoderma Lucidum polysaccharide to control cotton fusarium wilt, and the mechanism involved

Induced resistance is an effective measure for controlling plant diseases by utilizing the natural defense of the host and meets the strategic needs of pesticide application and safety for agricultural products worldwide. Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide (GLP), which is the main active molecule of G. lucidum, has been widely used in functional food and clinical medicine. However, there are few reports of the use of GLP for the prevention and control of plant diseases. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of GLP and its mechanism of inducing plant resistance. In this study, we found that GLP spray and irrigation root treatments can promote growth in cotton. After soaking in GLP, theseedling height and cotton fusarium wilt resistance both increased to some extent, effects that were dose dependent. After treatment of cotton with GLP, the activities of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in leaves increased significantly, whereas the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased. In addition, QRT-PCR results showed significantly increased relative expression of genes related to the jasmonic acid pathway in cotton. Therefore, we speculate that GLP can induce plant resistance by stimulating the jasmonate pathway.
