Toward Efficient and Stereoselective Aromatic and Dearomative Cope Rearrangements: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of α-Allyl-α'-Aromatic γ-Lactone Derivatives

The aromatic Cope rearrangement is an elusive transformation that has been the subject of a limited number of investigations compared to those seemingly close analogues, namely the Cope and aromatic Claisen rearrangement. Herein we report our investigations inspired by moderate success observed in the course of pioneering works. By careful experimental and theoretical investigations, we demonstrate that key substitutions on 1,5-hexadiene scaffold allow fruitful transformations. Especially, efficient functionalisation of the heteroaromatic rings results from the aromatic Cope rearrangement, while highly stereoselective interrupted aromatic Cope rearrangements highlight the formation of chiral compounds through a dearomative process.

On the Synthesis and Structure of 'Naked' Ga(I) and In(I) Salts and the Surprising Stability of Simple Ga(I) and In(I) Salts in the Coordinating Solvents Ether and Acetonitrile

In this work, we present the solid-state structures of solvent-free Ga[pf] and In[pf] salts ([pf]-=[Al(ORF)4]-; RF=C(CF3)3), which are very rare examples of salts with truly 'naked' metal cations. Both salts may serve as starting materials for subvalent gallium and indium chemistry with very weakly coordinating ligands providing the freedom of choice for solvents and ligands for the future. On the other hand, we report and rationalize the formation and isolation of [M(OEt2)2][pf] and [M(MeCN)2][pf] (M=Ga, In), underlining the surprising stability of these subvalent group 13 M+ ions against disproportionation. Unexpectedly, dicoordinate and carbene analogous [M(L)2]+ ions with the [pf]- counterion are stable in L=acetonitrile and diethyl ether at room temperature, opening up possible applications for example in organic synthesis and catalysis.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Enantio- and Regioselective C(sp3 )-H Alkenylation of Thioamides

An enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed C(sp3 )-H alkenylation of thioamides with but-2-ynoate ester coupling partners employing thioamide directing groups is presented. The method is operationally simple and requires only mild reaction conditions, while providing alkenylated products as single regioisomers in excellent yields (up to 85 %) and high enantiomeric excess [up to 91 : 9 enantiomeric ratio (er), or up to >99 : 1 er after a single recrystallization]. Diverse downstream derivatizations of the products are demonstrated, delivering a range of enantioenriched constructs. Extensive computational studies using density functional theory provide insight into the detailed reaction mechanism, origin of enantiocontrol, and the unusual regioselectivity of the alkenylation reaction.

Can Magnetic Dipole Transition Moment Be Engineered?

The development of chiral compounds with enhanced chiroptical properties is an important challenge to improve device applications. To that end, an optimization of the electric and magnetic dipole transition moments of the molecule is necessary. Nevertheless, the relationship between chemical structure and such quantum mechanical properties is not always clear. That is the case of magnetic dipole transition moment (m) for which no general trends for its optimization have been suggested. In this work we propose a general rationalization for improving the magnitude of m in different families of chiral compounds. Performing a clustering analysis of hundreds of transitions, we have been able to identify a single group in which |m| value is maximized along the helix axis. More interestingly, we have found an accurate linear relationship (up to R2 =0.994) between the maximum value of this parameter and the area of the inner cavity of the helix, thus resembling classical behavior of solenoids. This research provides a tool for the rationalized synthesis of compounds with improved chiroptical responses.

Merging Visible Light Photocatalysis and P(III)-Directed C-H Activation by a Single Catalyst: Modular Assembly of P-Alkyne Hybrid Ligands

Metal-catalyzed C-H activation strategies provide an efficient approach for synthesis by minimizing atom, step, and redox economy. Developing milder, greener, and more effective protocols for these strategies is always highly desirable to the scientific community. In this study, the utilization of a single rhodium complex enabled the visible-light-induced late-stage C-H activation of biaryl-type phosphines with alkynyl bromides, employing inherent phosphorus atoms as directing groups. This chemistry combines P(III)-directed C-H activation with visible light photocatalysis, under exogenous photosensitizer-free conditions, offering a unique platform for ligand design and preparation. Furthermore, this study also explores the asymmetric catalysis and coordination chemistry of the resulting P-alkyne hybrid ligands with specific transition metals. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate the mechanistic intricacies of this transformation.

Structures, Bonding Analyses and Reactivity of a Dicationic Digallene and Diindene Mimicking trans-bent Ditetrylenes

The reaction of bisdicyclohexylphosphinoethane (dcpe) and the subvalent MI sources [MI (PhF)2 ][pf] (M=Ga+ , In+ ; [pf]- =[Al(ORF )4 ]- ; RF =C(CF3 )3 ) yielded the salts [{M(dcpe)}2 ][pf]2 , containing the first dicationic, trans-bent digallene and diindene structures reported so far. The non-classical MI ⇆MI double bonds are surprisingly short and display a ditetrylene-like structure. The bonding situation was extensively analyzed by quantum chemical calculations, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and EDA-NOCV (Energy Decomposition Analysis with the combination of Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence) analyses and is compared to that in the isoelectronic and isostructural, but neutral digermenes and distannenes. The dissolved [{Ga(dcpe)}2 ]2+ ([pf]- )2 readily reacts with 1-hexene, cyclooctyne, diphenyldisulfide, diphenylphosphine and under mild conditions at room temperature. This reactivity is analyzed and rationalized.

Photoinduced Cobalt Catalysis for the Reductive Coupling of Pyridines and Dienes Enabled by Paired Single-Electron Transfer

Selective hydroarylation of dienes has potential to provide swift access to useful building blocks. However, most existing methods rely on dienes stabilised by an aromatic group and transmetallation or nucleophilic attack steps require electron-rich aryl coupling partners. As such, there are few examples which tolerate wide-spread heteroarenes such as pyridine. Whilst allylic C-H functionalisation could be considered an alternative approach, the positional selectivity of unsymmetrical substrates is hard to control. Here, we report a general approach for selective hydropyridylation of dienes under mild conditions using metal catalysed hydrogen-atom transfer. Photoinduced, reductive conditions enable simultaneous formation of a cobalt-hydride catalyst and the persistent radical of easily-synthesised pyridyl phosphonium salts. This facilitates selective coupling of dienes in a traceless manner at the C4-position of a wide-range of pyridine substrates. The mildness of the method is underscored by its functional-group tolerance and demonstrated by applications in late-stage functionalisation. Based on a combination of experimental and computational studies, we propose a mechanistic pathway which proceeds through non-reversible hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) from a cobalt hydride species which is uniquely selective for dienes in the presence of other olefins due to a much higher relative barrier associated with olefin HAT.

Revisiting the Paradigm of Reaction Optimization in Flow with a Priori Computational Reaction Intelligence

The use of micro/meso-fluidic reactors has resulted in both new scenarios for chemistry and new requirements for chemists. Through flow chemistry, large-scale reactions can be performed in drastically reduced reactor sizes and reaction times. This obvious advantage comes with the concomitant challenge of re-designing long-established batch processes to fit these new conditions. The reliance on experimental trial-and-error to perform this translation frequently makes flow chemistry unaffordable, thwarting initial aspirations to revolutionize chemistry. By combining computational chemistry and machine learning, we have developed a model that provides predictive power tailored specifically to flow reactions. We show its applications to translate batch to flow, to provide mechanistic insight, to contribute reagent descriptors, and to synthesize a library of novel compounds in excellent yields after executing a single set of conditions.

An Artificial Intelligence Approach for Tackling Conformational Energy Uncertainties in Chiroptical Spectroscopies

Determination of the absolute configuration of chiral molecules is a prerequisite for obtaining a fundamental understanding in any chirality-related field. The interaction with polarised light has proven to be a powerful means to determine this absolute configuration, but its application rests on the comparison between experimental and computed spectra for which the inherent uncertainty in conformational Boltzmann factors has proven to be extremely hard to tackle. Here we present a novel approach that overcomes this issue by combining a genetic algorithm that identifies the relevant conformers by accounting for the uncertainties in DFT relative energies, and a hierarchical clustering algorithm that analyses the trends in the spectra of the considered conformers and identifies on-the-fly when a given chiroptical technique is not able to make reliable predictions. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by considering the challenging cases of papuamine and haliclonadiamine, two bis-indane natural products with eight chiral centres and considerable conformational heterogeneity that could not be assigned unambiguously with current approaches.

Catalytic Alkyne Semihydrogenation with Polyhydride Ni/Ga Clusters

The bimetallic, decanuclear Ni3 Ga7 -cluster of the formula [Ni3 (GaTMP)3 (μ2 -GaTMP)3 (μ3 -GaTMP)] (1, TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl) reacts reversibly with dihydrogen under the formation of a series of (poly-)hydride clusters 2. Low-temperature 2D NMR experiments at -80 °C show that 2 consist of a mixture of a di- (2Di ), tetra- (2Tetra ) and hexahydride species (2Hexa ). The structures of 2Di and 2Tetra are assessed by a combination of 2D NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The cooperation of both metals is essential for the high hydrogen uptake of the cluster. Polyhydrides 2 are catalytically active in the semihydrogenation of 4-octyne to 4-octene with good selectivity. The example is the first of its kind and conceptually relates properties of molecular, atom-precise transition metal/main group metal clusters to the respective solid-state phase in catalysis.

Copper-Catalyzed Regiodivergent Internal Allylic Alkylations

We report a copper-catalyzed, regioselective, and stereospecific alkylation of unbiased internal allylic carbonates with functionalized alkyl and aryl Grignard reagents. The reactions exhibit high stereospecificity and regioselectivity for either SN 2 or SN 2' products under two sets of copper-catalyzed conditions, which enables the preparation of a broad range of products with E-alkene selectivity. Density functional theory calculations reveal the origins of the regioselectivity based on the different behaviors of homo- and heterocuprates.

Discrimination of the Enantiotopic Faces of Structurally Unbiased Carbenium Ions Employing a Cyclohexadiene-Based Chiral Hydride Source

An enantioselective reduction of simple carbenium ions with cyclohexadienes containing a hydridic C-H bond at an asymmetrically substituted carbon atom is disclosed. The net reaction is a transfer hydrogenation of alkenes (styrenes) only employing chiral cyclohexadienes as dihydrogen surrogates. The trityl cation is used to initiate a Brønsted acid-promoted process, in which a delicate intermolecular capture of a carbenium-ion intermediate by the aforementioned chiral hydride source is enantioselectivity determining. Exclusively non-covalent interactions are rendering one of the transition states energetically more favored, giving the reduction products in good enantiomeric ratios. The computed reaction mechanism supports the present findings as well as previous results obtained from studies on other transfer-hydrogenation methods involving the cyclohexadiene platform.

Reversible Single Electron Redox Steps Convert Polycycles with a C3 P3 Core to a Planar Triphosphinine

Reaction of the imidazolium-stabilized diphosphete-diide IDP with trityl phosphaalkyne affords a mixture which contains the molecules 1 a and 1 b with a central C₃ P₃ core, which formally carries a two-fold negative charge. In order to avoid the formation of an antiaromatic 8π electron system within a conjugated dianionic six-membered [C₃ P₃ ]^2- ring, 1 a adopts a bicyclic [3.1.0] and 1 b a tricyclic [2.2.0.0] structure which are in a dynamic equilibrium. 1 a, b can be reversibly oxidized to a triphosphinine dication [5]²⁺ with a central flat aromatic six-membered C₃ P₃ ring. This two-electron redox reaction occurs in two single-electron transfer steps via the 7π-radical cation [4]⋅⁺ , which could also be isolated and fully characterized. The profound reversible structural change observed for the two-electron redox couple [5]²⁺ /1 a, b is in sharp contrast to the C₆ H₆ /[C₆ H₆ ]^2- couple, which undergoes only a modest structural deformation.

Ring Expansion Strategies for the Synthesis of Medium Sized Ring and Macrocyclic Sulfonamides

Two new ring expansion strategies are reported for the synthesis of medium sized ring and macrocyclic sulfonamides. Both methods can be performed without using classical protecting groups, with the key ring expansion step initiated by nitro reduction and amine conjugate addition respectively. Each method can be used to make diversely functionalised cyclic sulfonamides in good to excellent yields, in a range of ring sizes. The ring size dependency of the synthetic reactions is in good agreement with the outcomes modelled by Density Functional Theory calculations.

Atom-Economical Synthesis of Dimethyl Carbonate from CO2 : Engineering Reactive Frustrated Lewis Pairs on Ceria with Vacancy Clusters

The chemical conversion of CO₂ to long-chain chemicals is considered as a highly attractive method to produce value-added organics, while the underlying reaction mechanism remains unclear. By constructing surface vacancy-cluster-mediated solid frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), the 100 % atom-economical, efficient chemical conversion of CO₂ to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) was realized. By taking CeO₂ as a model system, we illustrate that FLP sites can efficiently accelerate the coupling and conversion of key intermediates. As demonstrated, CeO₂ with rich FLP sites shows improved reaction activity and achieves a high yield of DMC up to 15.3 mmol g^-1 . In addition, by means of synchrotron radiation in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy, combined with density functional theory calculations, the reaction mechanism on the FLP site was investigated systematically and in-depth, providing pioneering insights into the underlying pathway for CO₂ chemical conversion to long-chain chemicals.

A Germapyramidane Switches Between 3D Cluster and 2D Cyclic Structures in Single-Electron Steps

Reaction of the imidazolium-substituted iphosphate-diide, (Ipr)₂ C₂ P₂ (IDP), with GeCl₂  ⋅ dioxane and KBArF₂₄ [(BarF₂₄ )^- =tetrakis[(3,5-trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate)] afforded the dicationic spherical-aromatic nido-cluster [Ge(η⁴ -IDP)]²⁺ ([1]²⁺ ) (Ipr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolium-2-ylidene). This complex is a rare heavy analogue of the elusive pyramidane [C(η⁴ -C₄ H₄ )]. [1]²⁺ undergoes two reversible one-electron reductions, which yield the radical cation [2]⋅⁺ and the neutral Ge^II species 3. Both [2]⋅⁺ and 3 rearrange in solution forming the 2D aromatic and planar imidazolium-substituted digermolide [4]²⁺ and germole-diide 5, respectively. Both planar species can be oxidized back to [1]²⁺ using AgSbF₆ . These redox-isomerizations correspond to the fundamental transformation of a 3D aromatic cluster into a 2D aromatic ring compound upon reduction and vice versa. The mechanism of these reactions was elucidated using DFT calculations and cyclic voltammetry experiments.

Mechanistic Origin of Favorable Substituent Effects in Excellent Cu Cyclam Based HNO Sensors

HNO has broad chemical and biomedical properties. Metal complexes and derivatives are widely used to make excellent HNO sensors. However, their favorable mechanistic origins are largely unknown. Cu cyclam is a useful platform to make excellent HNO sensors including imaging agents. A quantum chemical study of Cu cyclams with various substitutions was performed, which reproduced diverse experimental reactivities. Structural, electronic, and energetic profiles along reaction pathways show the importance of HNO binding and a proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism for HNO reaction. Results reveal that steric effect is primary and electronic factor is secondary (if the redox potential is sufficient), but their interwoven effects can lead to unexpected reactivity, which looks mysterious experimentally but can be explained computationally. This work suggests rational substituent design ideas and recommends a theoretical study of a new design to save time and cost due to its subtle effect.

Bis(imidazolium)-1,3-diphosphete-diide: A Building Block for FeC2 P2 Complexes and Clusters

Reaction of the 6π-electron aromatic four-membered heterocycle (IPr)₂ C₂ P₂ (1) (IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-ylidene) with [Fe₂ CO₉ ] gives the neutral iron tricarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)₃ -η³ -{(IPr)₂ C₂ P₂ }] (2). Oxidation with two equivalents of the ferrocenium salt, [Fe(Cp)₂ ](BArF₂₄ ), affords the dicationic tricarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)₃ -η⁴ -{(IPr)₂ C₂ P₂ }](BArF₂₄ )₂ (4). The one-electron oxidation proceeds under concomitant loss of one CO ligand to give the paramagnetic dicarbonyl radical cation complex [Fe(CO)₂ -η⁴ -{(IPr)₂ C₂ P₂ }](BArF₂₄ ) (5). Reduction of 5 allows the preparation of the neutral dicarbonyl complex [Fe(CO)₂ -η⁴ -{(IPr)₂ C₂ P₂ }] (6). An analysis by various spectroscopic techniques (⁵⁷ Fe Mössbauer, EPR) combined with DFT calculations gives insight into differences of the electronic structure within the members of this unique series of iron carbonyl complexes, which can be either described as electron precise or Wade-Mingos clusters.

Introducing the Perfluorinated Cp* Ligand into Coordination Chemistry

The reaction of AgBF₄ and [Rh(COD)Cl]₂ (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene) in presence of [NEt₄ ][C₅ (CF₃ )₅ ] afforded the fluorocarbon soluble complex [Rh(COD)(C₅ (CF₃ )₅ )] by salt metathesis. This complex represents the first example for a successful coordination of the weakly basic [C₅ (CF₃ )₅ ]^- ligand, since its first synthesis in 1980. In addition to [Rh(COD)(C₅ (CF₃ )₅ )] also the byproduct [Rh(COD)(C₅ (CF₃ )₄ H)] was isolated and fully characterized. Accompanying DFT studies showed that the interaction energy of the [C₅ (CF₃ )₅ ]^- ligand towards the 12-electron fragment [Rh(COD)]⁺ is ≈70 kcal mol^-1 lower in comparison to [C₅ (CH₃ )₅ ]^- due to reduced electrostatic interactions and weaker π-donor properties of the ligand. The quantitative but reversible substitution of the [C₅ (CF₃ )₅ ]^- ligand by toluene, converting it into a weakly coordinating anion, experimentally proved the extraordinary weak bonding interaction.

Best-Practice DFT Protocols for Basic Molecular Computational Chemistry

Nowadays, many chemical investigations are supported by routine calculations of molecular structures, reaction energies, barrier heights, and spectroscopic properties. The lion's share of these quantum-chemical calculations applies density functional theory (DFT) evaluated in atomic-orbital basis sets. This work provides best-practice guidance on the numerous methodological and technical aspects of DFT calculations in three parts: Firstly, we set the stage and introduce a step-by-step decision tree to choose a computational protocol that models the experiment as closely as possible. Secondly, we present a recommendation matrix to guide the choice of functional and basis set depending on the task at hand. A particular focus is on achieving an optimal balance between accuracy, robustness, and efficiency through multi-level approaches. Finally, we discuss selected representative examples to illustrate the recommended protocols and the effect of methodological choices.

Oxidative Cyclodehydrogenation of Trinaphthylamine: Selective Formation of a Nitrogen-Centered Polycyclic π-System Comprising 5- and 7-Membered Rings

We describe a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold comprising a unique combination of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. The compound is accessible through an intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine. To the best of our knowledge this is the very first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. The unusual ring fusion motif is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of the unexpected product is rationalized by detailed mechanistic studies on the DFT level. The results suggest the cyclization to occur under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.

Dinitrogen Binding at a Trititanium Chloride Complex and Its Conversion to Ammonia under Ambient Conditions

Reaction of [TiCp*Cl₃] (Cp*=η⁵‐C₅Me₅) with one equivalent of magnesium in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature affords the paramagnetic trinuclear complex [{TiCp*(μ‐Cl)}₃(μ₃‐Cl)], which reacts with dinitrogen under ambient conditions to give the diamagnetic derivative [{TiCp*(μ‐Cl)}₃(μ₃‐η¹ : η² : η²‐N₂)] and the titanium(III) dimer [{TiCp*Cl(μ‐Cl)}₂]. The structure of the trinuclear mixed‐valence complexes has been studied by experimental and theoretical methods and the latter compound represents the first well‐defined example of the μ₃‐η¹ : η² : η² coordination mode of the dinitrogen molecule. The reaction of [{TiCp*(μ‐Cl)}₃(μ₃‐η¹ : η² : η²‐N₂)] with excess HCl in tetrahydrofuran results in clean NH₄Cl formation with regeneration of the starting material [TiCp*Cl₃]. Therefore, a cyclic ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions can be envisioned by alternating N₂/HCl atmospheres in a [TiCp*Cl₃]/Mg(excess) reaction mixture in tetrahydrofuran.

Spontaneous Ammonia Activation Through Coordination-Induced Bond Weakening in Molybdenum Complexes of a Dianionic Pentadentate Ligand Platform

Ammonia oxidation catalyzed by molecular compounds is of current interest as a carbon-free source of dihydrogen. Activation of N-H bonds through coordination to transition metal centers is a key reaction in this process. We report the substantial activation of ammonia via reaction with low-valent molybdenum complexes of a diborate pentadentate ligand system. Spontaneous loss of dihydrogen from (B₂ Pz₄ Py)Mo^II -NH₃ at room temperature to produce the dinuclear μ-nitrido compound (B₂ Pz₄ Py)Mo-N-Mo(B₂ Pz₄ Py) is observed due to substantial N-H bond weakening upon coordination to Mo. Mechanistic details are supported through the experimental observation/characterization of terminal amido, imido and nitrido complexes and density functional theory computations. The generally under-appreciated role of bridging nitrido intermediates is revealed and discussed, providing guidance for further catalyst development for this process.

Growth of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Assemblies on Cu(100) and Cu(111): From Single Molecules to Magic-Number Islands

N‐Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have superior properties as building blocks of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs). Understanding the influence of the substrate in the molecular arrangement is a fundamental step before employing these ligands in technological applications. Herein, we study the molecular arrangement of a model NHC on Cu(100) and Cu(111). While mostly disordered phases appear on Cu(100), on Cu(111) well‐defined structures are formed, evolving from magic‐number islands to molecular ribbons with coverage. This work presents the first example of magic‐number islands formed by NHC assemblies on flat surfaces. Diffusion and commensurability are key factors explaining the observed arrangements. These results shed light on the molecule‐substrate interaction and open the possibility of tuning nanopatterned structures based on NHC assemblies.

PdFe Single-Atom Alloy Metallene for N2 Electroreduction

Single-atom alloys hold great promise for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), while the comprehensive experimental/theoretical investigations of SAAs for the NRR are still missing. Herein, PdFe₁ single-atom alloy metallene, in which the Fe single atoms are confined on a Pd metallene support, is first developed as an effective and robust NRR electrocatalyst, delivering exceptional NRR performance with an NH₃ yield of 111.9 μg h^-1  mg^-1 , a Faradaic efficiency of 37.8 % at -0.2 V (RHE), as well as a long-term stability for 100 h electrolysis. In-depth mechanistic investigations by theoretical computations and operando X-ray absorption/Raman spectroscopy indentify Pd-coordinated Fe single atoms as active centers to enable efficient N₂ activation via N₂ -to-Fe σ-donation, reduced protonation energy barriers, suppressed hydrogen evolution and excellent thermodynamic stability, thus accounting for the high activity, selectivity and stability of PdFe₁ for the NRR.

Structure of an Ultrathin Oxide on Pt3 Sn(111) Solved by Machine Learning Enhanced Global Optimization

Determination of the atomic structure of solid surfaces typically depends on comparison of measured properties with simulations based on hypothesized structural models. For simple structures, the models may be guessed, but for more complex structures there is a need for reliable theory-based search algorithms. So far, such methods have been limited by the combinatorial complexity and computational expense of sufficiently accurate energy estimation for surfaces. However, the introduction of machine learning methods has the potential to change this radically. Here, we demonstrate how an evolutionary algorithm, utilizing machine learning for accelerated energy estimation and diverse population generation, can be used to solve an unknown surface structure-the (4×4) surface oxide on Pt₃ Sn(111)-based on limited experimental input. The algorithm is efficient and robust, and should be broadly applicable in surface studies, where it can replace manual, intuition based model generation.

Structure of an Ultrathin Oxide on Pt3Sn(111) Solved by Machine Learning Enhanced Global Optimization

Determination of the atomic structure of solid surfaces typically depends on comparison of measured properties with simulations based on hypothesized structural models. For simple structures, the models may be guessed, but for more complex structures there is a need for reliable theory-based search algorithms. So far, such methods have been limited by the combinatorial complexity and computational expense of sufficiently accurate energy estimation for surfaces. However, the introduction of machine learning methods has the potential to change this radically. Intermolecular Carbosilylation of α-Olefins with C(sp3 )-C(sp) Bond Formation Involving Silylium-Ion Regeneration

A regioselective addition of alkynylsilanes across unactivated, terminal alkenes is reported. The reaction is initiated by the capture of a sterically unhindered silylium ion by a silylated phenylacetylene derivative to form a bis(silylated) ketene‐like carbocation. This in situ‐generated key intermediate is the actual catalyst that maintains the catalytic cycle by a series of electrophilic addition reactions of silylium ions and β‐silicon‐stabilized carbocations. The computed reaction mechanism is fully consistent with the experimental findings. This unprecedented two‐component carbosilylation establishes a C(sp³)−C(sp) bond and a C(sp³)−Si bond in atom‐economic fashion.

Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion at an InSn-Enriched Liquid-Metal Electrode

The renewable energy driven electrochemical conversion of nitrates to ammonia is emerging as a viable route for the creation of this hydrogen carrier. However, the creation of highly efficient electrocatalysts that show prolonged stability is an ongoing challenge. Here we show that room temperature liquid metal Galinstan can be used as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for nitrate conversion to ammonia achieving rates of up to 2335 μg h⁻¹ cm⁻² with a Faradaic efficiency of 100 %. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental observation indicated the activity is due to InSn alloy enrichment within the liquid metal that occurs during the electrocatalytic reaction. This high selectivity for NH₃ is also due to additional suppression of the competing hydrogen evolution reaction at the identified In₃Sn active site. This work adds to the increasing applicability of liquid metals based on Ga for clean energy technologies.

Revisiting the Bonding Model for Gold(I) Species: The Importance of Pauli Repulsion Revealed in a Gold(I)-Cyclobutadiene Complex

Understanding the bonding of gold(I) species has been central to the development of gold(I) catalysis. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first gold(I)-cyclobutadiene complex, accompanied with bonding analysis by state-of-the-art energy decomposition analysis methods. Analysis of possible coordination modes for the new species not only confirms established characteristics of gold(I) bonding, but also suggests that Pauli repulsion is a key yet hitherto overlooked element. Additionally, we obtain a new perspective on gold(I)-bonding by comparison of the gold(I)-cyclobutadiene to congeners stabilized by p-, d-, and f-block metals. Consequently, we refine the gold(I) bonding model, with a delicate interplay of Pauli repulsion and charge transfer as the key driving force for various coordination motifs. Pauli repulsion is similarly determined as a significant interaction in AuI -alkyne species, corroborating this revised understanding of AuI bonding.

Synthesis and Reactivity of N-Heterocyclic Silylene Stabilized Disilicon(0) Complexes

Synthesis and reactivity of disilicon(0) complexes are of fundamental and application importance. Herein, we report the development of an N-heterocyclic imino-substituted silylene (1), which has strong σ-donating ability and is significantly sterically hindered. The one-pot reaction of this silylene with [IPr→SiCl₂ ] (IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene) and KC₈ (2 equiv) in THF at -30 °C leads to a silylene-ligated disilicon(0) complex (2), isolated as red crystals in 60 % yield. Characterization data and DFT calculations show that the trans-bent Si₄ skeleton in 2 features a Si⁰ =Si⁰ double bond with significant π-π bonding and one lone pair of electrons on each of these two Si⁰ atoms. Complex 2 reacts readily with phenylacetylene, producing a structurally intriguing silatricyclic complex 6,8-diaza-1,2,5-trisilatricyclo-[3.2.1.0^2,7 ]-oct-3-ene (3), and revealing new aspects of low-valent silicon chemistry.

Adatom Bonding Sites in a Nickel-Fe3 O4 (001) Single-Atom Model Catalyst and O2 Reactivity Unveiled by Surface Action Spectroscopy with Infrared Free-Electron Laser Light

Single-atom (SA) catalysis presently receives much attention with its promise to decrease the cost of the active material while increasing the catalyst's performance. However, key details such as the exact location of SA species and their stability are often unclear due to a lack of atomic level information. Here, we show how vibrational spectra measured with surface action spectroscopy (SAS) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations can differentiate between different adatom binding sites and determine the location of Ni and Au single atoms on Fe₃ O₄ (001). We reveal that Ni and Au adatoms selectively bind to surface oxygen ions which are octahedrally coordinated to Fe ions. In addition, we find that the Ni adatoms can activate O₂ to superoxide in contrast to the bare surface and Ni in subsurface positions. Overall, we unveil the advantages of combining SAS and DFT for improving the understanding of single-atom catalysts.

Zinc-Promoted ZnMe/ZnPh Exchange in Eight-Coordinate [Ru(PPh3 )2 (ZnMe)4 H2 ]

The syntheses, reactivity and electronic structure analyses of [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnMe)₄H₂], 1 a, and [Ru(PPh₃)₂(ZnPh)₄H₂], 2 b, are reported. 1 a exhibits an 8‐coordinate Ru centre with axial phosphines and a symmetrical (2 : 2) arrangement of ZnMe ligands in the equatorial plane. The ZnMe ligands in 1 a undergo facile, sequential exchange with ZnPh₂ to give 2 b, which shows a 3 : 1 arrangement of ZnPh ligands. Both 1 a and 2 b exist in equilibrium with their respective 3 : 1 and 2 : 2 isomers. Mechanisms for ZnMe/ZnPh exchange and isomerisation are proposed using DFT calculations. The relationships of these {Ru(ZnR)₄H₂} species to isoelectronic Group 8 transition metal polyhydrides and related Schlenk equilibria in the Negishi reaction are discussed.

Theoretical Optimization of Compositions of High-Entropy Oxides for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

High‐entropy oxides are oxides consisting of five or more metals incorporated in a single lattice, and the large composition space suggests that properties of interest can be readily optimised. For applications within catalysis, the different local atomic environments result in a distribution of binding energies for the catalytic intermediates. Using the oxygen evolution reaction on the rutile (110) surface as example, here we outline a strategy for the theoretical optimization of the composition. Density functional theory calculations performed for a limited number of sites are used to fit a model that predicts the reaction energies for all possible local atomic environments. Two reaction pathways are considered; the conventional pathway on the coordinatively unsaturated sites and an alternative pathway involving transfer of protons to a bridging oxygen. An explicit model of the surface is constructed to describe the interdependency of the two pathways and identify the composition that maximizes catalytic activity.

C(spn)-X (n = 1-3) Bond Activation by Palladium

We have studied the palladium-mediated activation of C( sp n )-X bonds (n = 1-3 and X = H, CH 3 , Cl) in archetypal model substrates H 3 C-CH 2 -X, H 2 C=CH-X and HC≡C-X by catalysts PdL n  with L n  = no ligand, Cl - , and (PH 3 ) 2 , using relativistic density functional theory at ZORA-BLYP/TZ2P. The oxidative addition barrier decreases along this series, even though the strength of the bonds increases going from C( sp 3 )-X, to C( sp 2 )-X, to C( sp )-X. Activation strain and matching energy decomposition analyses reveal that the decreased oxidative addition barrier going from  sp 3  to  sp 2  to  sp , originates from a reduction in the destabilizing steric (Pauli) repulsion between catalyst and substrate. This is the direct consequence of the decreasing coordination number of the carbon atom in C( sp n )-X, which goes from four, to three, to two along this series. The associated net stabilization of the catalyst-substrate interaction dominates the trend in strain energy which indeed becomes more destabilizing along this same series as the bond becomes stronger from C( sp 3 )-X to C( sp )-X.

Competition for Hydride between Silicon and Boron: Synthesis and Characterization of a Hydroborane-Stabilized Silylium Ion

Potent main‐group Lewis acids are capable of activating element‐hydrogen bonds. To probe the rivalry for hydride between silylium‐ and borenium‐ion centers, a neutral precursor with the hydrosilane and hydroborane units in close proximity on a naphthalene‐1,8‐diyl platform was designed. Abstraction of one hydride leads to a hydroborane‐stabilized silylium ion rather than a hydrosilane‐coordinated borenium ion paired with [B(C₆F₅)₄]⁻ or [HCB₁₁Cl₁₁]⁻ as counteranions. Characterization by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction supported by DFT calculations reveals a cationic, unsymmetrical open three‐center, two‐electron (3c2e) Si−H−B linkage.

N-Arylation of Diketopyrrolopyrroles with Aryl Triflates

A new methodology for the double N-arylation of diketopyrrolopyrroles with aryl triflates has been developed. It is now possible to prepare diketopyrrolopyrroles bearing N-substituents derived from naphthalene, anthracene and coumarin in two steps from commercially available phenols. This represents the first time arenes lacking strong electron-withdrawing groups were inserted onto lactamic nitrogen atoms via arylation. The ability to incorporate heretofore unprecedented substituents translates to increased modulation of the resulting photophysical properties such as switching-on/off solvatofluorochromism. TD-DFT calculations have been performed to explore the nature of the relevant excited states. This new synthetic method made it possible to elucidate the influence of such substituents on the absorption and emission properties of tetraaryl substituted diketopyrrolopyrroles.

How Alkali Cations Catalyze Aromatic Diels-Alder Reactions

We have quantum chemically studied alkali cation-catalyzed aromatic Diels-Alder reactions between benzene and acetylene forming barrelene using relativistic, dispersion-corrected density functional theory. The alkali cation-catalyzed aromatic Diels-Alder reactions are accelerated by up to 5 orders of magnitude relative to the uncatalyzed reaction and the reaction barrier increases along the series Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Rb+ < Cs+ < none. Our detailed activation strain and molecular-orbital bonding analyses reveal that the alkali cations lower the aromatic Diels-Alder reaction barrier by reducing the Pauli repulsion between the closed-shell filled orbitals of the dienophile and the aromatic diene. We argue that such Pauli mechanism behind Lewis-acid catalysis is a more general phenomenon. Also, our results may be of direct importance for a more complete understanding of the network of competing mechanisms towards the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an astrochemical context.

A Structural Model for the Iron-Nitrosyl Adduct of Gentisate Dioxygenase

We present the synthesis, properties, and characterization of [Fe(T1Et4iPrIP)(NO)(H₂O)₂](OTf)₂ (1) (T1Et4iPrIP = Tris(1-ethyl-4-isopropyl-imidazolyl)phosphine) as a model for the nitrosyl adduct of gentisate 1,2-dioxygenase (GDO). The further characterization of [Fe(T1Et4iPrIP)(THF)(NO)(OTf)](OTf) (2) which was previously communicated (Inorg. Chem. 2014, 53, 5414) is also presented. The weighted average Fe-N-O angle of 162° for 1 is very close to linear (≥ 165°) for these types of complexes. The coordinated water ligands participate in hydrogen bonding interactions. The spectral properties (EPR, UV-vis, FTIR) for 1 are compared with 2 and found to be quite comparable. Complex 1 closely follows the relationship between the Fe-N-O angle and NO vibrational frequency which was previously identified for 6-coordinate {FeNO}⁷ complexes. Liquid FTIR studies on 2 indicate that the ν(NO) vibration position is sensitive to solvent shifting to lower energy (relative to the solid) in donor solvent THF and shifting to higher energy in dichloromethane. The basis for this behavior is discussed. The K _eq for NO binding in 2 was calculated in THF and found to be 470 M^-1. Density functional theory (DFT) studies on 1 indicate donation of electron density to the iron center from the π* orbitals of formally NO^-. Such a donation accounts for the near linearity of the Fe-N-O bond and the large ν(NO) value of 1791 cm^-1.

Quantum Chemical Insight into the LiF Interlayer Effects in Organic Electronics: Reactions between Al Atom and LiF Clusters

It is well known that the aluminum cathode performs dramatically better when a thin lithium fluoride (LiF) layer inserted in organic electronic devices. The doping effect induced by the librated Li atom via the chemical reactions producing AlF3 as byproduct was previously proposed as one of possible mechanisms. However, the underlying mechanism discussion is quite complicated and not fully understood so far, although the LiF interlayer is widely used. In this paper, we perform theoretical calculations to consider the reactions between an aluminum atom and distinct LiF clusters. The reaction pathways of the Al-(LiF)n (n = 2, 4, 16) systems were discovered and the energetics were theoretically evaluated. The release of Li atom and the formation of AlF3 were found in two different chemical reaction routes. The undissociated Al-(LiF)n systems have chances to change to some structures with loosely bound electrons. Our findings about the interacted Al-(LiF)n systems reveal new insights into the LiF interlayer effects in organic electronics applications.
