Divergent driving mechanisms of community temporal stability in China's drylands

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are reshaping dryland ecosystems globally at an unprecedented pace, jeopardizing their stability. The stability of these ecosystems is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and supporting local communities. Yet, the mechanisms governing their stability are poorly understood, largely due to the scarcity of comprehensive field data. Here we show the patterns of community temporal stability and its determinants across an aridity spectrum by integrating a transect survey across China's drylands with remote sensing. Our results revealed a U-shaped relationship between community temporal stability and aridity, with a pivotal shift occurring around an aridity level of 0.88. In less arid areas (aridity level below 0.88), enhanced precipitation and biodiversity were associated with increased community productivity and stability. Conversely, in more arid zones (aridity level above 0.88), elevated soil organic carbon and biodiversity were linked to greater fluctuations in community productivity and reduced stability. Our study identifies a critical aridity threshold that precipitates significant changes in community stability in China's drylands, underscoring the importance of distinct mechanisms driving ecosystem stability in varying aridity contexts. These insights are pivotal for developing informed ecosystem management and policy strategies tailored to the unique challenges of dryland conservation.

Experimental partitioning of rainfall into throughfall, stemflow and interception loss by Haloxylon ammodendron, a dominant sand-stabilizing shrub in northwestern China

Rainfall partitioning by the vegetation canopy represents a significant component of the local hydrological cycle by reshaping the amount and spatial distribution of rainfall. Measuring the components of rainfall partitioning, however, has been a challenging task due to laborious- and time-consuming field experiments. In this study, to probe the influences of long-term afforestation on dynamic patterns of rainfall partitioning, the dominant sand-stabilizing shrub Haloxylon ammodendron at three different ages was selected for field measurements during the 2020-2021 growing season. The throughfall percentage for young H. ammodendron (YH, 75.9 %) was significantly higher than that for middle-aged H. ammodendron (MAH, 63.4 %) and mature H. ammodendron (MH, 62.4 %) (p < 0.05 for all cases). However, the interception loss percentage of YH (22.3 %) was significantly lower than that for MAH (35.0 %) and MH (36.5 %) (p < 0.05 for all cases). No significant difference was found for stemflow percentage among YH (1.8 %), MAH (1.5 %) and MH (1.1 %). Smaller rainfall events contributed to a higher interception loss percentage and a lower net rainfall percentage for all ages. Both throughfall and stemflow percentage first showed increasing trends and then tended to be stable with increasing rainfall amount and duration, whereas interception loss percentage showed the opposite patterns. Rainfall partitioning was significantly correlated with the plant area index, stem basal area and canopy height (p < 0.05 for all cases), which may account for significant differences in rainfall partitioning patterns, as all shrubs experienced the same weather conditions. The average funneling ratio was 56.6, 26.7 and 17.9 for YH, MAH and MH, respectively. These results suggested that H. ammodendron afforestation can have a significant impact on rainfall partitioning by reducing net rainfall reaching the soil and may have some implications for local water budget and ecosystem management in oasis-desert ecotones.

Carbon fluxes across alpine, oasis, and desert ecosystems in northwestern China: The importance of water availability

Dryland regions cover >40% of the Earth's land surface, making these ecosystems the largest biome in the world. Ecosystems in these areas play an important role in determining the interannual variability of the global terrestrial carbon sink. Examining carbon fluxes of various types of dryland ecosystems and their responses to climatic variability is essential for improving projections of the carbon cycle in these regions. In this study, we made use of observations from a regional flux tower observation network in a typical arid endorheic basin, the Heihe river basin (HRB). As a representative area of both the arid region of China and the entire region of central Asia, the HRB includes the main ecosystems in arid regions. We compared the spatial variations of carbon fluxes of five terrestrial ecosystems (i.e., grassland, cropland, desert, wetland, and forest ecosystems) and explored the responses of ecosystem carbon fluxes to climatic factors across different ecosystems. We found that our region exhibits a carbon sink ranging from 85.9 to 508.7 gC/m²/yr for different ecosystems, and the water availability is critical to the spatial variability of carbon fluxes in arid regions. Carbon fluxes across all sites exhibited weak correlations with temperature and precipitation. Marked differences in precipitation effects were observed between the sites within oases and those outside of oases. Irrigation and groundwater recharge were of great importance to the variations in carbon fluxes for the sites within oases. Evapotranspiration (ET) exhibited strong relationships with carbon fluxes, indicating that ET was a better metric of soil water availability than was precipitation in driving the spatial variability of carbon fluxes in arid regions. This study has implications for better understanding the carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems and informing ecological management in dryland regions.
