Comparison of ZnO doped different phases TiO2 nanoparticles in terms of toxicity using zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Titanium dioxide is used in many commercial and industrial areas such as paint, paper, cosmetics, textiles, and surface coating. The reasons for its use in such a wide area are its anti-corrosion and high stability. Although TiO₂ is considered to be a low-toxicity material, research has been further expanded following the recognition of the possible carcinogenic effects of TiO₂ in humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The aim of this study is to compare the toxicity of TiO₂ used in many fields in different phases. In the study anatase TiO₂ synthesized by hydrothermal method and dual phase TiO₂ (anatase and rutile phase) structures obtained by thermal conditioning were used and compared with commercially available TiO₂. ZnO which has similar uses like TiO₂ was also used and compared with 1% doped TiO₂ in different phases in terms of toxicity. Zebrafish (Danio rerio, D. rerio), a freshwater fish, which is widely used in toxicity assessments was preferred in this study due to its small size, fast reproduction rate, low cost, physiological and molecular similarity with humans, and genetic predisposition. Experimental investigations showed that the highest death occurred in the low concentrations of (10 ppm) ZnO doped rutile phase. 39% of the embryos died in the ZnO nanoparticle solutions prepared at low concentrations. The highest mortality at medium (100 ppm) and high (1000 ppm) concentrations were observed in the ZnO-doped rutile phase after 96 h. Similarly, the highest malformation was detected in the ZnO-doped rutile phase during the same period.

Dual-phase 16 slice CT angiography in stroke imaging: a poor man's multiphase study?

Multiphase CT angiography (CTA) in collateral assessment provides time-resolved cerebral angiograms of the intracranial vasculature, requiring a high-speed multidetector CT (MDCT) scanner with ≥ 64 slices. Unfortunately, many hospitals are equipped with lower speed MDCT scanners. Herein, we present our experience performing dual-phase CTA (d-CTA) on a 16 slice MDCT with a biphasic rate injection to grade intracranial collaterals as predictor of clinical outcome. 42 patients were evaluated with both dual-phase CTA (d-CTA) and single-phase CTA (s-CTA) for occluded anterior intracranial circulation and collaterals. They were treated with endovascular reperfusion. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to define the independent predictors for favorable outcome at 3 months. Good collateral circulation status on d-CTA was associated with a lower median 24-h (5 vs. 7.5, p = 0.03) and discharge (2 vs. 4.6, p = 0.04) NIHSS. A logistic regression model showed that only age (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.91-0.98, p = 0.03) and good collateral circulation status at d-CTA (OR 4.3, 95% CI 1.87-11.3, p < 0.01) were independent predictors of favorable functional outcome at 3 months, but that s-CTA was not. The collateral status on d-CTA can be a useful predictor for clinical outcome in acute stroke patients. The proposed protocol adapted to a low-speed MDCT scanner could be of particular interest in hospitals without access to the more up-to-date technology.

Dual phase infusion with bolus tracking: technical innovation for cardiac and respiratory navigated magnetic resonance angiography using extracellular contrast

This technical innovation paper describes a technique for performing cardiac-gated, respiratory-navigated cardiovascular magnetic resonance angiography using an extracellular gadolinium-based contrast agent at 1.5 Tesla (T) with a dual phase bolus injection and slow infusion technique.

Accelerating dual cardiac phase images using undersampled radial phase encoding trajectories

A three-dimensional dual-cardiac-phase (3D-DCP) scan has been proposed to acquire two data sets of the whole heart and great vessels during the end-diastolic and end-systolic cardiac phases in a single free-breathing scan. This method has shown accurate assessment of cardiac anatomy and function but is limited by long acquisition times. This work proposes to accelerate the acquisition and reconstruction of 3D-DCP scans by exploiting redundant information of the outer k-space regions of both cardiac phases. This is achieved using a modified radial-phase-encoding trajectory and gridding reconstruction with uniform coil combination. The end-diastolic acquisition trajectory was angularly shifted with respect to the end-systolic phase. Initially, a fully-sampled 3D-DCP scan was acquired to determine the optimal percentage of the outer k-space data that can be combined between cardiac phases. Thereafter, prospectively undersampled data were reconstructed based on this percentage. As gold standard images, the undersampled data were also reconstructed using iterative SENSE. To validate the method, image quality assessments and a cardiac volume analysis were performed. The proposed method was tested in thirteen healthy volunteers (mean age, 30years). Prospectively undersampled data (R=4) reconstructed with 50% combination led high quality images. There were no significant differences in the image quality and in the cardiac volume analysis between our method and iterative SENSE. In addition, the proposed approach reduced the reconstruction time from 40min to 1min. In conclusion, the proposed method obtains 3D-DCP scans with an image quality comparable to those reconstructed with iterative SENSE, and within a clinically acceptable reconstruction time.

The Relationship Between Estrogen Receptor, Progesterone Receptor and Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 Expression of Breast Cancer and the Retention Index in Dual Phase (18)F-FDG PET/CT

PURPOSE

This study investigates the correlation of retention index (RI) using the dual phase FDG PET/CT scan with the breast cancer biomarkers.

METHODS

A total of 55 patients with breast cancer underwent dual phase FDG PET/CT scans (60 and 120 min after FDG injection) before treatment. SUVmax and SUVmean of the primary breast tumors were measured, then the percent change of SUVmax and SUVmean between the two scans were calculated, and denoted as RImax and RImean, respectively. After the surgical resection of the breast tumor, the status of biomarkers (ER, PR, and HER-2) was evaluated in the postsurgical specimen.

RESULTS

RImean was significantly higher in ER (-) (median, 16.2; IQR, 10.8-21.0) or HER-2 (+) (median, 16.1; IQR, 10.7-21.6) tumors than in ER (+) tumors (median, 9.9; IQR, 5.5-15.3) or HER-2 (-) tumors (median, 10.5; IQR, 5.5-16.1). However, there were no significant differences of SUVmax or RImax according to the ER or HER-2 status. There were no significant differences of any PET parameters between PR (+) and PR (-) tumors. Based off ROC curve analyses, RImean predicted the ER (+) tumors (AUC, 0.699; p = 0.006), and HER-2 (+) tumors (AUC, 0.674; p = 0.022), but not the PR (+) tumors. However, neither SUVmax nor RImax predicted ER (+), PR (+), or HER-2 (+) tumors.

CONCLUSIONS

Retention index of SUVmean can reflect the ER and HER-2 status of breast cancers. Higher retention index of SUVmean might associate with lower ER expression and higher HER-2 expression.

Arterial phase CT for the detection of splenic injuries in blunt trauma: would it improve clinical outcomes?

OBJECTIVE

To determine if the addition of an arterial phase abdominal computed tomography (CT) improves clinical outcomes in patients with blunt splenic injuries.

METHODS

Retrospective review of patients who underwent CT of the abdomen revealing splenic injuries. Clinical management in these patients was determined.

RESULTS

Fifty-one of three thousand five hundred twenty-five patients had splenic injuries. Twenty-five patients underwent nonsurgical management, and 3 failed. The theoretical additional arterial phase resulted in a 62% increase in mean effective dose compared to the portal venous phase alone.

CONCLUSIONS

Routine use of arterial phase CT in blunt trauma patients may not be warranted as there is minimal improvement in outcomes.
