Study of soil to plant transfer factors of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in Vietnamese crops

The study of staple food products is crucial to assure public safety and provides input for predictive dose assessment models. To further this goal, the activity concentrations, transfer factors, and radiological hazards of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, and ¹³⁷Cs were studied for ten pairs of selected vegetables and soils in Tien Le near Hanoi in Vietnam. This is the first study in this area for Vietnamese vegetable samples. The ten most popular vegetables in Vietnamese diet were selected, namely choy sum, crown daisy, lettuce, cabbage, Malabar spinach, beans, sweet potato, potato, kohlrabi and carrot. The research results showed that the activity concentrations observed in vegetable crops did not present the previously reported strong correlation to those in soil. The ranges of TFs of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K were 4 × 10^-2 - 6.9 × 10^-1, 8 × 10^-2 - 9.7 × 10^-1; and 1.0 × 10⁰-1.6 × 10¹, respectively. Values for leafy vegetables and tubers exceed previous world range figures for Th and K. The soil has been evaluated for radiological hazard indices, which predict almost no risk to human health in the study area.

An environmental transfer hub for multimodal atom probe tomography

Environmental control during transfer between instruments is required for samples sensitive to air or thermal exposure to prevent morphological or chemical changes prior to analysis. Atom probe tomography is a rapidly expanding technique for three-dimensional structural and chemical analysis, but commercial instruments remain limited to loading specimens under ambient conditions. In this study, we describe a multifunctional environmental transfer hub allowing controlled cryogenic or room-temperature transfer of specimens under atmospheric or vacuum pressure conditions between an atom probe and other instruments or reaction chambers. The utility of the environmental transfer hub is demonstrated through the acquisition of previously unavailable mass spectral analysis of an intact organic molecule made possible via controlled cryogenic transfer into the atom probe using the hub. The ability to prepare and transfer specimens in precise environments promises a means to access new science across many disciplines from untainted samples and allow downstream time-resolved in situ atom probe studies.

Modelling the environmental transfer of phthalates and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans into agricultural products: the EN-forc model

This study aimed to predict the occurrence of four phthalates, two polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and two polychlorinated dibenzofurans in environmental and agricultural media from observed concentrations in air, sludge, manure and concentrate. For the environmental and agricultural fate modelling, the newly developed multimedia model "EN-forc" (ENvironmental Food transfer model for ORganic Contaminants) was used. To validate EN-forc calculations, the predicted concentrations of the considered chemicals in soil, groundwater, drinking water, plants and animal products were compared with both observed and modelled concentrations available in the literature. For the majority of the considered matrices, predicted phthalate and dioxin levels differed one order of magnitude at most with observed concentrations. Unfortunately, the transfer models implemented in EN-forc lacked power to predict levels of some phthalates and dioxins in pasture, root crops and/or tubers. Concentrations of phthalates and dioxins in offal could not be predicted due to the absence of suitable models that have an acceptable level of complexity to implement in EN-forc. For this type of food products, further research is highly encouraged. In a next step, the modelling framework of EN-forc will be extended in order to be able to predict human dietary exposure to organic chemicals like phthalates and dioxins.
