Geographic information system-based determination of priority monitoring areas for hazardous air pollutants in an industrial city

Industrial cities are hotspots for many hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), which are detrimental to human health. We devised an identification method to determine priority HAP monitoring areas using a comprehensive approach involving monitoring, modeling, and demographics. The methodology to identify the priority HAP monitoring area consists of two parts: (1) mapping the spatial distribution of selected categories relevant to the target pollutant and (2) integrating the distribution maps of various categories and subsequent scoring. The identification method was applied in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea, to identify priority HAP monitoring areas. Four categories related to HAPs were used in the method: (1) concentrations of HAPs, (2) amount of HAP emissions, (3) the contribution of industrial activities, and (4) population density in the city. This method can be used to select priority HAP monitoring areas for intensive monitoring campaigns, cohort studies, and epidemiological studies.

Numerical simulation on seismic pounding damage in a simply-supported steel bridge

Steel bridges are generally considered to perform well during seismic activity. Nevertheless, they still suffered much unexpected seismic damage in the Kumamoto earthquake, especially seismic pounding damage. Previous studies on bridge pounding damage have generally focused on reinforced concrete bridges. However, steel bridges' dynamic characteristics are more complex, the stiffness of each component varies significantly, and relevant research remains limited. Therefore, the numerical simulation method is adopted in this paper to study the pounding damage of simple-supported steel bridges under seismic events in detail. The multiscale, fine three-dimensional finite element model was built using the general finite element calculation platform Abaqus, and dynamic implicit analysis was performed. Numerical results show that large and near-fault seismic activity results in obvious pounding damage to steel beams. Specifically, longitudinal pounding causes damage to the steel beam's ends; however, the damage is typically localized and mild. Lateral pounding further causes direct damage to the steel beams, resulting in extensive and serious damage. Horizontal pounding which combines longitudinal and lateral causes rotation of the bridge deck and aggravates the lateral damage to steel beams. In addition, a pounding identification method based only on displacement data is proposed, and a feasible preventive measure for lateral pounding damage is suggested.

Identification of nitrogen-sources in an aquifer beneath a municipal solid waste landfill in the vicinity of multiple pollutant sources

Nitrogen contamination of groundwater has become a global issue and has aroused considerable concern among authorities. However, it is difficult to trace nitrogen sources in settings where a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill site co-exists with intensive agriculture and other human activities. Therefore, a field investigation that combined a statistical analysis (factor analysis: FA) and hydrochemical analysis was designed and undertaken to identify nitrogen-pollutant sources in the shallow groundwater beneath an MSW landfill near to an agricultural area and human settlement. The results of the case study showed that nitrate was the specific pollutant produced by agricultural non-point-sources (P_bi = 15.5) and domestic pollution sources (P_bi = 41.0). The total phosphorus (P_bi = 37.2) and organic matter (P_bi = 16.6) were the specific pollutants released by the aquaculture and animal husbandry point-sources, and chloride (P_bi = 75.4) and organic matter (P_bi = 16.1) were the specific pollutants produced by the landfill. In the investigated area, the domestic pollution sources and agricultural non-point-sources were the most likely sources of nitrate contamination in the shallow aquifer. However, the landfill source and the aquaculture and animal husbandry point sources were the most likely sources of ammonium contamination. The combined method used in this study could successfully identify the nitrogen pollution sources in the shallow groundwater beneath an MSW landfill located in the vicinity of multiple pollutant sources. The method could be used to improve the control of nitrogen contamination and the management of groundwater quality.

Current methods for the identification of carbapenemases

Detection of carbapenemases in clinical microbiology labs is a challenging issue. Comparison of the results of susceptibility testing with the breakpoint values of carbapenems is the first step in the screening of carbapenemase producers. To date, screening of carbapenemase-producing (CP) bacteria has been mostly performed by a selective medium. Although these media are practical for the detection of most CP isolates, the inoculated plates have to be incubated overnight. Subsequently, we need the confirmation of the carbapenemase producers present in the culture medium by additional testing [e.g. inhibition studies with liquid or solid media, modified Hodge test (MHT), or gradient strips], which can take up to another 48 hours. Despite the lack of discrimination between the three different classes of carbapenemases (KPC, MBL and OXA) and difficulties in the interpretation of the results, the MHT is usually deemed as the phenotypic reference method for the confirmation of carbapenemase production. Molecular techniques, such as real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, in contrast to phenotypic methods that are very time consuming, are faster and allow for the quick identification of carbapenemase genes. These techniques can detect and characterize carbapenemases, including NDM- and KPC-mediated resistance, which is critical for epidemiological investigations. The aim of this review is to gather a summary of the available methods for carbapenemase detection and describe the strengths and weaknesses of each method.
