Efficient degradation of venlafaxine using intimately coupled high-active crystal facets exposed TiO2 and biodegradation system: Kinetic studies, biofilm stress behavior and transformation mechanism

Intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) system is a potential wastewater treatment technology, of which TiO2-based ICPB system has been widely studied. There are many ways to improve the degradation efficiency of the ICPB process, but no crystal facet engineering method has been reported yet. In this work, a new ICPB system coated with NaF-TiO2 exposing high energy facets was designed to degrade biorecalcitrant psychotropic drug - venlafaxine (VNF). Initially, the TiO2 crystal surface was modified with NaF, resulting in the formation of NaF-TiO2 with a 14.4% increase in the exposure ratio of (001). The contribution rate of ·OH was increased by 9.5%, and the contribution rate of h+ was increased by 33.2%. Next, NaF-TiO2 was loaded onto the surface of the sponge carrier, and then the ICPB system was constructed after about 15 days of biofilm formation. After the ICPB system was acclimated with VNF, the removal rate of COD decreased significantly (the lowest was 62.7%), but that of ammonia nitrogen remained at 50.5 ± 6.0% and the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion increased by 84.1 mg/g VSS. According to the high throughput results, at the phylum level, Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi together maintain the nitrogen removal capability and structural stability of the ICPB system. The relative abundance of Bacteroidota was significantly increased by 14.2%, suggesting that there may be some correlation between Bacteroidota and certain metabolites of the anti-depressant active ingredients. At the genus level, the Thauera (3.1%∼11.5%) is the major bacterial group that secretes EPS, protecting biofilm against external influences. Most of the changes in microorganisms are consistent with the decontamination properties and macroscopic appearance of EPS in the ICPB system. Finally, the degradation efficiency of ICPB system for VNF was investigated (92.7 ± 3.8%) and it was mostly through hydroxylation and demethylation pathways, with more small molecular products detected, providing the basis for biological assimilation of VNF. Collectively, the NaF-TiO2 based ICPB system would be lucrative for the future degradation of venlafaxine.

A step closer to real practice: Integrated tandem photocatalysis-biofilm process towards degradation of crude oil

Intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) systems represent a promising wastewater treatment technology. The implementation of ICPB systems for oil spill treatment is a pressing concern. In this study, we developed an ICPB system comprising BiOBr/modified g-C₃N₄ (M-CN) and biofilms for the treatment of oil spills. The results demonstrate that the ICPB system achieved the rapid degradation of crude oil, outperforming the single photocatalysis and biodegradation methods by degrading 89.08 ± 5.36% within 48 h. The combination of BiOBr and M-CN formed a Z-scheme heterojunction structure, enhancing the redox capacity. The interaction between the holes (h⁺) and the negative charge on the biofilm surface promoted the separation of electrons (e^-) and h⁺, thereby accelerating the degradation process of crude oil. Moreover, ICPB system maintained an excellent degradation ratio after three cycles and its biofilms progressively adapted to the adverse effects of crude oil and light. The microbial community structure remained stable throughout the degradation of crude oil, with Acinetobacter and Sphingobium identified as the dominant genera in biofilms. The proliferation of the Acinetobacter genus appeared to be the main factor contributing to the promotion of crude oil degradation. Our work demonstrates that the integrated tandem strategies perhaps represent a feasible pathway toward practical crude oil degradation.

A novel BC/g-C3N4 porous hydrogel carrier used in intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation system for efficient removal of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

Intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) is a promising technology to remove refractory contaminants from water. The key to successful ICPB is a carrier capable of accumulating biofilm and adhering photocatalyst firmly. Herein, BC/g-C₃N₄ was prepared into a three dimensional porous hydrogel and used as a carrier in ICPB system for the first time. Degradation experiments revealed that the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water by the ICPB system was 96.0% after 10 h, which was significantly higher than that by the photocatalysis (PC, 76.3%), biodegradation (B, 32.5%), adsorption (AD, 17.2%), and photolysis (P, 5.0%) systems. Photo-electrochemical tests confirmed that ICPB system had superior electron transfer ability between photocatalysts and microorganisms. The removal efficiency of COD proved that microorganisms played an important role in the mineralization process of TCH by the ICPB system. After the ICPB degradation experiment, microorganisms maintained high activity and Pseudomonas, Burkholderiaceae and Flavobacterium which had TCH degradation or electron transport ability, were enriched. In conclusion, the novel ICPB carrier overcame shortcomings of the traditional ICPB carrier and the novel ICPB system had superior degradation performance for TCH. This study provided a possible method to promote the practical application of ICPB technology.

Functional role of mixed-culture microbe in photocatalysis coupled with biodegradation: Total organic carbon removal of ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin is an extensively used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, which exists in aquatic environment, causing detrimental effects to the aquatic ecosystem and thus, indirectly to humans. Thus, an efficient and rapid removal method for ciprofloxacin is urgently needed. Intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation has proven to be highly efficient, low-cost, and eco-friendly. In this study, cube polyurethane sponges modified with visible light-responsive g-C₃N₄ and mixed culture microbes were used to increase the ciprofloxacin removal efficiency. Subsequently, 94% of ciprofloxacin was removed by photocatalytic-biodegradation and 12 degradation products and possible degradation pathways were analyzed. Photocatalytic-biodegradation had a 1.57 times higher total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate than photocatalytic degradation. The microbial community structure after 72 h of photocatalytic biodegradation was examined. High microbial richness, evenness, and functional dominant species belong to Proteobacteria, which were closely associated with the utilization of antibiotics, may be majorly responsible for the highly efficient removal degradation process. Additionally, microbes retarded the interaction of photogenerated electrons and holes, which may contribute to the increasing mineralization. The findings demonstrated the potential ability of photocatalytic biodegradation in degrading bio-recalcitrant compounds and provide new insights into photocatalytic coupled with biodegradation for removal of ciprofloxacin.
