Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prostatic carcinoma (PC) is a frequent neoplasm in elderly patients. Although androgen deprivation is associated with survival benefits, it is also related to adverse effects such as osteoporosis, frailty, or sarcopenia, which can negatively affect the patient's quality of life. This study aims to quantify and evaluate the prevalence of osteoporosis, frailty, or sarcopenia in elderly PC patients before and after androgen deprivation. We present data from an interim analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS PROSARC is a national (Spain) prospective observational study (May-2022-May-2025) still in progress in 2 hospitals. It includes patients with high-risk PC, aged ≥70 years, non-candidates for local treatment and scheduled to start androgen deprivation therapy. The following variables are analyzed: comorbidity, frailty (Fried frailty phenotype criteria), osteoporosis, sarcopenia (EWGSOP2), fat mass and muscle mass, before treatment and after 6 months of follow-up. RESULTS A 6-month follow-up was completed by 12/25 included patients (mean age, 84 years), with a high baseline prevalence of pre-frailty/frailty (67.7%), sarcopenia (66.7%) and osteoporosis (25%). Treatment did not significantly alter these variables or comorbidity. We observed changes in body mass index (p=0.666), decreased mean value of appendicular muscle mass (p=0.01) and increased percentage of fat mass (p=0.012). CONCLUSION In patients with high-risk PC, advanced age and a considerable prevalence of osteoporosis, frailty and sarcopenia, androgen deprivation (ADT; 6 months) produces decreased muscle mass without impact on the incidence of the known adverse effects of androgen deprivation.

Abstract
Nutritional ultrasound® is a new concept that uses ultrasound to assess body composition. It is composed of the evaluation of fat-free mass and fat mass. It is an emerging, economical, portable, non-invasive technique that evaluates the musculoskeletal area with linear, broadband, multifrequency probes, with a depth field of 20-100mm. It quantifies muscle modifications in malnutrition and provides information on functional changes (echogenicity). Although there are no validated specific cut-off points, the anterior rectum area of the quadriceps can be used as a criterion for malnutrition. The distribution of adipose tissue provides information on the energy reserve and the inflammatory pattern. It is important to integrate nutritional ultrasound® measures in clinical practice adapted to different settings and pathologies. It is necessary to establish training plans in nutritional ultrasound® for use by Endocrinology and Nutrition Specialists, with the aim of improving the diagnosis and treatment of their patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related decreases in muscle mass and function are associated with the development of metabolic impairments, particularly in the context of obesity. Fibroblast growth factor21 (FGF-21) has been suggested as a common mediator of both processes. No known studies have examined the association between FGF-21 and muscle mass and function in overweight or obese older adults. With this in mind, this study aimed to investigate the association between plasma levels of FGF-21 and muscle mass and function outcomes in overweight or obese older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Exploratory study, which included 39 adults of 60-70years old with body mass indexes >25kg/m2. As study outcomes, measurements were made of appendicular muscle mass (AMM), grip strength, 5 times sit-to-stand test (5xSTT), as well as plasma levels of FGF-21, fasting glucose, and insulin. The homeostatic model assessment index (HOMA-IR) was also calculated to determine the presence of insulin resistance. RESULTS Significant relationships were found between plasma levels of FGF-21 vs 5xSTT (rho=0.49; P<.05). Moreover, FGF-21 levels were significantly higher in those with insulin resistance (P<.05), as well as with having lower levels of AMM (P<.05). CONCLUSION There is a relationship between the plasma levels of FGF-21 and muscle function outcomes in overweight or obese older adults. Future studies should investigate the potential causalities between these relationships.

Abstract
A review is made of the basic aspects of creatine/creatinine metabolism and the close relationship between creatinine and muscle mass, which makes the former a biochemical marker of the latter. Emphasis is placed on the current prognostic value of both the low urinary excretion of creatinine and low serum creatinine levels in different clinical settings in which sarcopenia probably plays a significant role in morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between sarcopenia and different anthropometric indicators, and identify the best indicator to discriminate sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adult women. METHOD Data from 173 older adult women (≥60 years), living in Lafaiete Coutinho, a small-sized city in northeastern Brazil, were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined based on the European consensus on definition and diagnosis using three components: muscle mass, muscle strength and performance. The association between sarcopenia and anthropometric indicators (body mass index, corrected arm muscle area and calf perimeter) was tested using the binary logistic regression technique. RESULTS The adjusted regression model indicated that all anthropometric indicators were inversely associated with sarcopenia, and an increase by one unit in body mass index, corrected arm muscle area or calf circumference decreased the probability of sarcopenia in older adult women by approximately 85%, 16% and 72%, respectively. CONCLUSION All the studied anthropometric indicators can be used as discriminators of sarcopenia in an older adult women population. To this end body mass index exhibited better sensitivity and calf circumference better specificity. The results of the study may improve nursing practice and that of other healthcare professionals, enabling sarcopenia screening in older adult women from simple and low-cost anthropometric indicators.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A controlled protein intake has shown beneficial effects to preserve renal function and nutritional status in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. This study aimed to analyze usual dietary protein intake and its potential contribution to body composition in CKD patients in stages 3-5. METHOD Cross-sectional study in 134 CKD patients in stages 3-5 (mean e-GFR: 19.4±8.7ml/min/1.73m2; males 68.7% and primary CKD etiology was diabetes mellitus, 35.8%). Demographic, clinical and nutritional parameters were evaluated. Normalized protein nitrogen appearance (nPNA), was used as a surrogate marker of dietary protein intake. The sample was classified into three nPNA groups (Gn): G1: <0.8g/kg/day; G2: 0.8-1g/kg/day and, G3: ≥1g/kg/day. Assessment of nutritional status using the malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS), anthropometric measures and laboratory parameters. Analysis of body composition and hydration status by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIVA-101-RJL system). Statistical analysis by SPSS v.20. RESULTS Overall mean nPNA values were 0.91±0.23g of protein/kg BW/day and only 32.1% had a dietary protein intake <0.8g of protein/kg BW/day. Most of the CKD patients (65.5%) were in stages 4 or 5. Prevalence of protein-energy-wasting (PEW) syndrome measured by MIS was 15%. By analyzing differences between nPNA groups, body weight (BW), BMI and triceps-skinfold (TSF) thickness were significantly higher in the group with nPNA ≥1g/kg BW/day (G3), whereas a significant inverse relationship was found with the percentages of body cell mass (BCM%), fat-free mass (FFM%), muscle mass (MM%) and phase angle (PA) in the group with the lowest nPNA (G1). Analysis of gender among subjects showed significant differences with BW, FFM%, TSF and mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC%). Linear regression analysis showed that resistance, BCM%, MM%, and serum albumin were significant predictors of nPNA as a surrogate marker of daily protein intake (R=0.51; R2=0.29; R2 adjusted=0.23; p<0.001). CONCLUSION Controlled protein intake is one of the cornerstones of treatment in CKD patients. A low protein intake in patients with CKD stages 3 and 4-5 was associated with loss of muscle mass in the advanced-CKD unit. The loss of muscle mass appears as an early indicator of nutritional comprised. Factors such, elderly age and loss of eGFR, showed lower protein intake and were associated with muscle loss, especially in women. Further longitudinal studies are required to evaluate the contribution of different protein intakes to uremic symptoms, nutritional status, body composition and CKD progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocrine changes due to menopause have been associated to oxidative stress and muscle mass loss. The study objective was to determine the relationship between both variables in early postmenopause. MATERIAL AND METHODS An exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted in 107 pre- and postmenopausal women (aged 40-57 years). Levels of serum lipid peroxides and uric acid and enzymes superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, as well as total plasma antioxidant capacity were measured as oxidative stress markers. Muscle mass using bioelectrical impedance and muscle strength using dynamometry were also measured. Muscle mass, skeletal muscle index, fat-free mass, and body mass index were calculated. RESULTS More than 90% of participants were diagnosed with overweight or obesity. Postmenopausal women had lower values of muscle mass and strength markers, with a negative correlation between lipid peroxide level and skeletal muscle index (r= -0.326, p<.05), and a positive correlation between uric acid and skeletal muscle index (r=0.295, p<.05). A multivariate model including oxidative stress markers, age, and waist circumference showed lipid peroxide level to be the main contributor to explain the decrease in skeletal muscle mass in postmenopause, since for every 0.1μmol/l increase in lipid peroxide level, skeletal muscle index decreases by 3.03 units. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest an association between increased oxidative stress and muscle mass loss in early postmenopause.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We analyzed the levels of fitness, muscle structure and quality of life of adults after kidney transplant and healthy adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 16 kidney transplant patients and 21 healthy controls performed several fitness test, isokinetic evaluation of knee flexion and extension and ultrasonography muscle thickness assessment. They also completed the quality of life questionnaire SF-36. RESULTS Physical fitness, muscle structure and quality of life of the kidney transplant recipients were significantly poorer than the controls. The transplant patients performed less well in the "get up and go" and "sit to stand" test (p<.001) as well as in assessments of muscle structure, strength and power. The patients had a poorer score in their quality of life assessments, differing from the controls in domains of physical function, physical role, general health and social function (p<.001). DISCUSSION Fitness, strength and muscle mass are diminished in kidney transplant patients, resulting in a poorer quality of life which might entail an increased risk to their health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are few systematic studies on the prevalence of sarcopenia using the new diagnostic criteria in different geriatric care settings. OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia, using the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria in older subjects living in nursing homes and in those who attend geriatric outpatient clinics. MATERIAL AND METHODS A single country multicentre study in two samples of older subjects: patients cared for in outpatient geriatric clinics, and individuals living in nursing homes. Data collected will include demographic variables, medical history, medication, geriatric syndromes, functional status (assessment of basic and instrumental activities of daily living), mobility, cognitive status, comorbidity, quality of life, nutritional status, and laboratory parameters. For the diagnosis of sarcopenia, 4m walking speed, handgrip strength, and body composition measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis will be assessed. RESULTS Using the EWGSOP algorithm, the prevalence of sarcopenia in an elderly Spanish population will be estimated. In addition, concordance and correlation between the three parameters included in the definition (muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance) will be analysed, using the different existing cut-off points, and examining the diagnostic accuracy of each. Finally, demographic, anthropometric and functional data that define subjects with sarcopenia will be investigated. CONCLUSIONS The ELLI study should improve knowledge on the prevalence and characteristics of sarcopenia in older people in our population.
