Abstract
Central neurocytoma is the most common primary intraventricular tumor in adults being classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a benign grade II tumor with a good prognosis. Given the recent advances with regard to this tumor, a bibliometric analysis was due to study the future direction of research for neurocytomas. A comprehensive Elsevier's Scopus database search was performed to capture all published and indexed studies to date relevant to neurocytoma. A discrete set of validated bibliometric parameters were extracted and analyzed on R v4.1.3. A total of 1002 documents were included in our analysis covering a period between 1910 and 2021 (111 years). Around 98.5% of the documents were multi-author publications with a collaboration index (CI) of 4.21. Acta Neuropathologica, The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, and Cancer were the journals to include the highest number of top ten cited articles (2 out of 10 most cited articles, 20%). Switzerland (4 out of 10, 40%) accounted for the country to have the highest number of top 10 most cited articles with the USA (5588 out of 16,395 citations, 34.1%) having the greatest number of citations. Lastly, our analysis reported an annual growth rate of 6.9% for the number of papers produced by year. This is the first bibliometric analysis to study the top 10 most cited articles with regard to neurocytomas. A shift from histopathologic and clinical symptoms towards the treatment and management of the tumor was observed in our analysis.

Abstract
Purpose To highlight the clinical, neuroradiographic, neuropathologic, and molecular features of histologically identified neurocytoma in a pediatric cohort and highlight the evolving use methylation profiling in providing diagnostic clarity in difficult to diagnosis pediatric brain tumors. Methods Five consecutive children (ages 9–13, 2 girls 3 boys) were histologically diagnosed with neurocytoma at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego from 2012 to 2018. Clinical and molecular features were analyzed with regards to treatment course and outcome. Results Presenting symptoms included seizures (n = 2), syncope (n = 1), headache (n = 2), visual disturbances (n = 2) and emesis (n = 2). Tumor location included intraventricular (n = 2), intraventricular with parenchymal spread (n = 1), and extraventricular (n = 2). Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated reduced diffusivity (2/5), signal abnormality on susceptibility-weighted sequences (3/5), and varying degrees of contrast enhancement (4/5). All patients underwent surgical resection alone. Recurrence occurred in four children that were treated with surgery (4/4), adjuvant radiation (2/4), and chemoradiation (1/4). Neuropathologic features included positivity for GFAP (4/5), synaptophysin (4/5), NSE (2/2), NeuN (4/4), and variable Ki-67 (< 1% to 15%). Next generation sequencing (3/5) and microarray (3/5) collectively were abnormal in four of five tumors. Methylation profiling was successfully performed on four of five samples which led to modification of diagnosis in two patients and the others were either unclassifiable or confirmatory with the histologic diagnosis. Mean time to follow up was 77 months (range 44–112 months). Mean progression free survival and overall survival were 24 months (range 6 to 52 months) and 100% respectively. Conclusion Neurocytomas are a rare clinical entity that warrants further investigation into molecular and pathologic prognosticating features. Methylation profiling may aid in differentiation of neurocytoma from other difficult to diagnose tumors who share similar histologic features.

Abstract
This review summarizes the changes in the 5th Edition of the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors that relate to the pituitary gland. The new classification clearly distinguishes anterior lobe (adenohypophyseal) from posterior lobe (neurohypophyseal) and hypothalamic tumors. Other tumors arising in the sellar region are also discussed. Anterior lobe tumors include (i) well-differentiated adenohypophyseal tumors that are now classified as pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs; formerly known as pituitary adenomas), (ii) pituitary blastoma, and (iii) the two types of craniopharyngioma. The new WHO classification provides detailed histological subtyping of a PitNET based on the tumor cell lineage, cell type, and related characteristics. The routine use of immunohistochemistry for pituitary transcription factors (PIT1, TPIT, SF1, GATA3, and ERα) is endorsed in this classification. The major PIT1, TPIT, and SF1 lineage-defined PitNET types and subtypes feature distinct morphologic, molecular, and clinical differences. The "null cell" tumor, which is a diagnosis of exclusion, is reserved for PitNETs with no evidence of adenohypophyseal lineage differentiation. Unlike the 2017 WHO classification, mammosomatotroph and acidophil stem cell tumors represent distinct PIT1-lineage PitNETs. The diagnostic category of PIT1-positive plurihormonal tumor that was introduced in the 2017 WHO classification is replaced by two clinicopathologically distinct PitNETs: the immature PIT1-lineage tumor (formerly known as silent subtype 3 tumor) and the mature plurihormonal PIT1-lineage tumor. Rare unusual plurihormonal tumors feature multi-lineage differentiation. The importance of recognizing multiple synchronous PitNETs is emphasized to avoid misclassification. The term "metastatic PitNET" is advocated to replace the previous terminology "pituitary carcinoma" in order to avoid confusion with neuroendocrine carcinoma (a poorly differentiated epithelial neuroendocrine neoplasm). Subtypes of PitNETs that are associated with a high risk of adverse biology are emphasized within their cell lineage and cell type as well as based on clinical variables. Posterior lobe tumors, the family of pituicyte tumors, include the traditional pituicytoma, the oncocytic form (spindle cell oncocytoma), the granular cell form (granular cell tumor), and the ependymal type (sellar ependymoma). Although these historical terms are entrenched in the literature, they are nonspecific and confusing, such that oncocytic pituicytoma, granular cell pituicytoma, and ependymal pituicytoma are now proposed as more accurate. Tumors with hypothalamic neuronal differentiation are classified as gangliocytomas or neurocytomas based on large and small cell size, respectively. This classification sets the standard for a high degree of sophistication to allow individualized patient management approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is an extremely rare neuronal neoplasm that arises outside the ventricle. The clinical implication of the heterogenous prognosis of this rare tumor has not yet been clarified. Herein, we analyzed our institutional series of EVN. METHODS A total of eight consecutive cases were enrolled and investigated. The prognosis of EVN was analyzed and compared to that of central neurocytoma (CN). RESULTS There were two male and six female patients, and the median age was 36.5 years. The median tumor size was 38 mm, and the most common location of the tumor was the frontal lobe (3, 37.5%), followed by the parietal and temporal lobes. In brain imaging, four (50%) tumors showed peritumoral edema and three (37.5%) tumors showed calcification. All patients underwent gross total resection, and two (25%) underwent adjuvant radiotherapy. The 5-year overall survival (OS) was 55.6%, and the 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 42.9%. The OS and PFS of EVN were poor compared to those of CN. Although EVN is a single disease entity, individual patients showed varying prognosis. One patient showed no recurrence during the 7-year follow-up period; however, another patient had a recurrence 4 months after surgery and died 2 years later. CONCLUSION EVN may be a heterogenous disease entity. Additional cases with long-term followup are needed to develop optimal management protocols.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to discuss the importance of staged surgeries when approaching atypical central neurocytoma in children. Also, we show the preoperative embolization of the lesion as a maneuver to reduce the intraoperative bleeding. Central neurocytomas represent less than 0.5% of all intracranial tumors, and atypical central neurocytomas usually have unfavorable outcome, with high recurrence rate. The intraventricular location is frequent, with a predilection for the lateral ventricles. When completely resected, these lesions have a good prognosis. We report a case of a 12-year old male patient that presented with a history of headache for about 6 months, which worsened for 1 week prior to admission. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain showed a massive lesion occupying both lateral ventricles. He underwent a microsurgical treatment of a highly vascularized lesion, but the perioperative bleeding required interruption of the surgery. Thus, a preoperative embolization was able to occlude most arterial feeders and allowed subtotal resection in a second surgery. The patient had complete neurological recovery despite immediate post-operative deficits, and the histopathology was suggestive of atypical neurocytoma. Two-stage surgery with preoperative adjuvant embolization is a feasible strategy for treatment of large central neurocytomas in children.

Abstract
Background: Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) is an extremely rare neoplasm of the central nervous system. As reported, it arises in a variety of locations, but mainly within the cerebral hemispheres. Despite its histological similarity with central neurocytoma (CN), EVN occurs outside the ventricular system and, in 2007, was recognized by the World Health Organization as a separate entity. Case Description: A 39-year-old man, with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt inserted for communicating hydrocephalus, was admitted at our Unit of Neurosurgery with a 1-month history of gait disturbance, postural instability, speech disorders, and occasional incontinence. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mixed-density neoplasm in the left frontotemporal area, with anterior cerebral falx shift, and perilesional edema. The patient underwent surgical procedure; microsurgical excision of the lesion was performed through left pterional approach. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination revealed monomorphic round cells of the neuronal lineage, with a percentage of Ki-67 positive nuclei <5% and no evidence of mitosis or necrotic areas. According to radiologic features, this pattern was compatible with the diagnosis of EVN. Patient had a favorable recovery and he is still in follow-up. Conclusion: Because of their rarity, clinical, radiologic, and histopathological characteristics of EVNs are not yet well defined, as well as the optimal therapeutic management. Whereas EVNs are rarely described in literature, we aimed to share and discuss our experience along with a review of the published literature.

Abstract
The hypothalamus is functional neuroendocrine tissue that is responsible for the synthesis and secretion of peptide hormones that regulate the pituitary and other endocrine functions. Endocrine tumors of the hypothalamus are rare but they provide a model for tumors that have both structural and functional effects. Patients with hypothalamic endocrine tumors suffer mass effects including headaches, visual disturbances, and endocrine dysfunction due to structural damage to hypothalamic nuclei, which regulate appetite, temperature, diurnal rhythms and emotions. In addition, these tumors can secrete hormones that can cause acromegaly, Cushing disease, hyperprolactinemia, and the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis. Morphologic classification of these tumors has provided evidence for two classes of tumors, gangliocytomas that are composed of large neurons and neurocytomas that are comprised of small cells; these resemble the variants of magnocellular and parvocellular neurons in the hypothalamic nuclei. Biomarkers are used to classify these tumors and achieve accurate structure-function correlations. While surgery remains the mainstay of therapy, novel medical and radiopharmaceutical approaches are available for patients with progressive and/or unresectable tumors.

Abstract
Central neurocytoma is a rare benign brain tumor that typically arises from the subependymal lining of the lateral ventricles in young adults and is generally associated with excellent survival following neurosurgical excision alone. This is a retrospective clinical audit of biopsy-proven neurocytoma registered between 2004 and 2019 at a single institution in India. All time-to event outcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Any p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 66 patients with neurocytoma were included in the descriptive analysis. Median age of study cohort was 31 years with equitable gender ratio. Majority (83%) of tumors were intraventricular, lateral ventricle being the commonest location. Following maximal safe resection, patients were generally kept on close clinico-radiological surveillance. Most patients (80%) had typical World Health Organization (WHO) grade II neurocytoma with remaining 20% showing histological atypia and/or high-grade features. Outcome analysis was restricted to 35 patients with relevant treatment details and adequate follow-up information. Six patients experienced recurrent/progressive disease with 2 documented deaths. At a median follow up of 52 months, 5-year Kaplan-Meier estimates of progression-free survival and overall survival were 93.3% and 96.8% respectively. Three patients developed delayed recurrence (>5-years after initial diagnosis) underscoring the importance of long-term follow-up. Atypical/high-grade histology was associated with inferior survival that may stand to benefit with upfront adjuvant radiotherapy. This represents the largest single-institution series of central neurocytoma and demonstrates excellent outcomes with adequate surgical resection alone, reserving radiotherapy for large residual tumor, recurrent disease, and/or atypical high-grade histology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) was firstly described in 1997. The current literature regarding imaging of EVN is limited to sporadic case reports and case series. EVN is still poorly considered in the differential diagnosis by neuroradiologists, thus diagnosis remains challenging. In this systematic review, we summarize and discuss computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of EVN cases described in the literature, in order to provide useful informations to neuroradiologists. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most extensive review about imaging of EVN. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the literature about imaging of EVN cases was done. Only case reports or case series in which imaging (CT and/or MRI) features were deeply described were included in the revision. Eligibility of studies was assessed independently by two authors and any disagreements resolved by discussion. RESULTS Our search strategy revealed 224 articles. After implementation of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 35 studies were considered, and a total of 79 cases of EVN were analyzed. CONCLUSION EVN has not specific characteristics, with a large and variable imaging spectrum. Usually it appears as a large tumor, with diameters superior to 40 mm, frequently involving the frontal lobe. CT density and MRI signal intensity typically mirror the presence of cystic, solid, or calcified elements; contrast enhancement is visible in 87% of cases. Today, diagnosis of EVN with only imaging techniques is not univocal; neuroradiologists can only suspect this type of lesion, while the definitive diagnosis remains histological.

Abstract
Central neurocytomas are rare tumors, typically found in the third ventricle. We present the unusual case of a fourth ventricular central neurocytoma in a 70-year-old female presenting with imbalance and headaches, with an enhancing fourth ventricular mass on imaging. We examine the details of her clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, histopathologic analysis, and postoperative course. We performed a critical literature review of fourth ventricular central neurocytoma, identifying 6 previously reported cases. In contrast to our patient, the majority of these cases were in young males. The 2 females with fourth ventricular neurocytoma developed it at a much later age (mean 63.5 years) than their male counterparts (mean 22.8 years; P = 0.005). Despite being a rare cause for a fourth ventricular lesion, given the appropriate clinical context and radiographic findings, this should remain part of the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurocytoma is a rare brain neoplasm of neuroepithelial origin that occurs predominantly in the ventricular system adjacent to the interventricular foramen and septum pellucidum. However, extraventricular neurocytoma is an extremely rare entity, with poor clinical, radiologic, and histopathological characterization. Here we report a case of an extraventricular parafalcine neurocytoma in the left frontal lobe. We also examine previously reported cases of extraventricular neurocytoma in an attempt to provide an up-to-date summary of the condition. METHODS A literature search was performed using PubMed with specific key terms, inclusion criteria, and exclusion criteria. Selected case studies and case series were then compared, and statistical analyses were performed where appropriate. We report a 59-year-old woman presenting with weakness in her right leg and urinary incontinence. Physical examination revealed muscle strength of grade 3/5 in the right lower extremity. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a parafalcine mass in the left frontal lobe, with perilesional edema; the cerebral falx and lateral ventricle were shifted due to the compression. Gross total resection was performed. RESULTS Histopathological examination revealed a neurocytoma. Immunohistochemical staining showed diffuse positivity for synaptophysin. MIB-1 staining for Ki-67 antibody showed a labeling index of 20%. No adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy was administered. Brain computed tomography performed at a 3-month follow-up showed no signs of recurrence. CONCLUSION Extraventricular neurocytoma occurring in the brain parenchyma is a very rare central nervous system tumor. Its clinical and radiologic manifestations are nonspecific. The diagnosis depends on histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. Surgical resection should be the first-choice treatment.

Abstract
In 2007, extraventricular neurocytoma was classified as a separate entity among glioneuronal tumors. However, extraventricular neurocytoma is not fully understood and may be misdiagnosed. Here, we describe the clinical and pathological features, prognoses, and treatments of 13 extraventricular neurocytoma cases, and compare their immunophenotypes with those of oligodendroglioma, diffuse astrocytoma, and ependymoma. Six typical and 7 atypical cases comprised the 13 extraventricular neurocytoma cases. Histological features included oligodendroglioma-like perinuclear halo, neuropil-like matrix, ganglion or ganglioid cells, perivascular pseudorosettes, vessel hyalinization, calcifications, and myxoid degeneration. Atypical histological features included increased mitotic figures, focal necrosis, endothelial cell proliferation, and/or a Ki-67 index of >2%. All lesions expressed synaptophysin and microtubule-associated protein-2, which distinguished them from other similar tumors. Two patients with atypical extraventricular neurocytoma had tumor recurrence, one of whom had cerebrospinal fluid dissemination, suggesting that atypical histological features might represent adverse prognostic factors. In conclusion, the present study identified morphological and immunohistochemical features that would aid the differential diagnosis of extraventricular neurocytoma. In addition, radiotherapy with subtotal resection could be considered an effective treatment for extraventricular neurocytoma, but because a pediatric patient died of intracranial hemorrhage during radiotherapy, radiotherapy-related side effects should be considered, especially when treating children. Additional cases with long-term follow-up are needed to develop optimal management protocols for extraventricular neurocytoma.

Abstract
Central neurocytoma (CN) is a benign intraventricular neuronal tumor with a favorable prognosis. It accounts approximately 0.25–0.5% of intracranial tumors. In this report, we describe a very rare case of tetraventricular CN with imaging-pathologic correlation, and discuss their atypical features in a location together with treatment options. A 27-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of progressive headaches of several months’ duration. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a well-circumscribed, lobulated intraventricular mass with numerous intratumoral cystlike areas. The mass was located in the enlarged lateral ventricles bilaterally extending to the third and the fourth ventricle. Surgical removal of the 4th ventricle component of the tumor was performed. Histomorphological and immunohistochemical findings of the tumor were consistent with CN. After pathological diagnosis, gamma knife surgery was performed. CN may present with atypical features in a location with a usual histopathological findings. To our knowledge, we described the third case of tetraventricular CN, which was partially treated with both surgical resection and radiosurgery.

Abstract
Central neurocytomas (CNs) are rare central nervous system tumors that occur in the lateral ventricles. They are prevalent in young adults and are typically benign with excellent prognosis following surgical resection. Because of the rarity of the disease and its similar features with more common tumors, misdiagnosis becomes an issue. Optimal treatment is achieved only when the correct tumor types are distinguished. Typical clinical manifestations include symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, although no clinical feature is pathognomonic to CN. Radiologic imaging, histology, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and immunohistochemistry must be used to elucidate tumor characteristics and properly diagnose CN.

Abstract
We report a case of oligodendroglioma showing marked neuronal differentiation, which arose in the right frontal lobe of a 46-year-old woman. The resected tumor was composed of a mixture of oligodendroglioma, gangliocytoma, and neurocytoma areas with predominance of gangliocytoma-like areas. The oligodendroglioma areas showed immunoreactivity for Olig2 and mutant isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 protein, whereas the gangliocytoma and neurocytoma areas were positive for synaptophysin and NeuN. Ki-67 labeling index was approximately 5% to 10% in the oligodendroglioma areas. Molecular cytogenetic analyses demonstrated chromosomal losses of 1p and 19q and a mutation of isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (G395A, R132H) in both the oligodendroglioma and gangliocytoma areas. These data suggest that this tumor is an oligodendroglioma associated with prominent neuronal differentiation. There seems to be a close relationship between oligodendroglial progenitor cells and neuronal cells.

Abstract
A seventeen-year-old female patient was admitted with sudden-onset of headache and vomiting. Brain magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a heterogeneously enhancing tumour in the left lateral ventricle. The tumour was removed and confirmed as a central neurocytoma (CN). For the residual tumour in the left lateral ventricle, gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery was done at fifteen months after the initial surgery. Tumour recurred in the 4th ventricle at 5 yr after initial surgery. The tumour was removed and proved as a CN. In vitro primary culture was done with both tumours obtained from the left lateral ventricle and the 4th ventricle, respectively. Nestin, a neuronal stem cell marker was expressed in reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction of both tumors. Both tumours showed different morphology and phenotypes of neuron and glia depending on the culture condition. When cultured in insulin, transferrin selenium and fibronectin media with basic fibroblast growth factors, tumour cells showed neuronal morphology and phenotypes. When cultured in the Dulbeco's Modified Essential Media with 20% fetal bovine serum, tumors cells showed glial morphology and phenotypes. It is suggested that CN has the characteristics of neuronal stem cells and potential to differentiate into mature neuron and glial cells depending on the environmental cue.
