The harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 is more resistant to hydrogen peroxide at elevated CO2

Rising atmospheric CO2 can intensify harmful cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes. Worldwide, these blooms are an increasing environmental concern. Low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have been proposed as a short-term but eco-friendly approach to selectively mitigate cyanobacterial blooms. However, sensitivity of cyanobacteria to H2O2 can vary depending on the available resources. To find out how cyanobacteria respond to H2O2 under elevated CO2, Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806 was cultured in chemostats with nutrient-replete medium under C-limiting and C-replete conditions (150 ppm and 1500 ppm CO2, respectively). Microcystis chemostats exposed to high CO2 showed higher cell densities, biovolumes, and microcystin contents, but a lower photosynthetic efficiency and pH compared to the cultures grown under low CO2. Subsamples of the chemostats were treated with different concentrations of H2O2 (0-10 mg·L-1 H2O2) in batch cultures under two different light intensities (15 and 100 μmol photons m-2·s-1) and the response in photosynthetic vitality was monitored during 24 h. Results showed that Microcystis was more resistant to H2O2 at elevated CO2 than under carbon-limited conditions. Both low and high CO2-adapted cells were more sensitive to H2O2 at high light than at low light. Microcystins (MCs) leaked out of the cells of cultures exposed to 2-10 mg·L-1 H2O2, while the sum of intra- and extracellular MCs decreased. Although both H2O2 and CO2 concentrations in lakes vary in response to many factors, these results imply that it may become more difficult to suppress cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes when atmospheric CO2 concentrations continue to rise.

Rising CO2 will increase toxicity of marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

Ocean acidification caused by increasing emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) is expected to have profound impacts on marine ecological processes, including the formation and evolution of harmful algal blooms (HABs). We designed a set of experiments in the laboratory to examine the effects of increasing CO₂ on the growth and toxicity of a toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum producing paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). It was found that high levels of CO₂ (800 and 1200 ppm) significantly promoted the growth of A. minutum compared to the group (400 ppm) representing the current CO₂ level. The total yields of PSTs by A. minutum, including both intracellular and extracellular toxins, were significantly enhanced, probably due to the induction of core enzyme activity and key amino acids synthesis for PST production. More interestingly, high level of CO₂ promoted the transformation from gonyautoxin2&3 to gonyautoxin1&4 and depressed the release of PSTs from inside to outside of the cells. All these processes collectively led to an apparent increase of A. minutum toxicity. Our study demonstrated that rising CO₂ would increase the risk of toxic A. minutum based on the comprehensive analyses of different processes including algal growth and toxin synthesis, transformation and release.

Effects of elevated CO2 on plant C-N-P stoichiometry in terrestrial ecosystems: A meta-analysis

A substantial number of experiments have so far been carried out to study the response of the C-N-P stoichiometry of terrestrial plants to the rising CO₂ level of the earth. However, there is a need of systematic evaluation for assessing the impact of the elevated CO₂ on plant C-N-P stoichiometry. In the present investigation, a comprehensive meta-analysis involving 386 published reports and including 4481 observations has been carried out. The goal of the research was to determine the response of plants to their C-N-P stoichiometry due to elevated levels of global atmospheric CO₂. The results showed that rising CO₂ altered the concentration of C (+2.19%, P < 0.05), N (-9.73%, P < 0.001) and P (-3.23%, P < 0.001) and C:N (+13.29%, P < 0.001) and N:P ratios (-7.32%, P < 0.0001). Overall, a slightly increasing trend in the C:P ratio (P > 0.05) in the plant was observed. However, plant leaf, shoot and herbaceous type of plants showed more sensitivity to rising CO₂. CO₂ magnitude exhibited a positive effect (P < 0.05) on C:N ratio. Additionally, "CO₂ acclimation" hypothesis as proposed by the authors of the current paper was also tested in the study. Results obtained, especially, show changes of C and N concentrations and C:P ratio to an obvious down-regulation for long-term CO₂ fumigation. At spatial scales, a reduction of plant N concentration was found to be higher in the southern hemisphere. The CO₂ enrichment methods affected the plant C-N-P stoichiometry. Compared to FACE (free-air CO₂ enrichment), OTC (open top chamber) showed larger changes of C, N, P, and N:P. The results of the present study should, therefore, become helpful to offer a better understanding towards the response of the terrestrial plant C-N-P stoichiometry to an elevated global atmospheric CO₂ in the future.

How rising CO2 and global warming may stimulate harmful cyanobacterial blooms

Climate change is likely to stimulate the development of harmful cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic waters, with negative consequences for water quality of many lakes, reservoirs and brackish ecosystems across the globe. In addition to effects of temperature and eutrophication, recent research has shed new light on the possible implications of rising atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. Depletion of dissolved CO₂ by dense cyanobacterial blooms creates a concentration gradient across the air-water interface. A steeper gradient at elevated atmospheric CO₂ concentrations will lead to a greater influx of CO₂, which can be intercepted by surface-dwelling blooms, thus intensifying cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic waters. Bloom-forming cyanobacteria display an unexpected diversity in CO₂ responses, because different strains combine their uptake systems for CO₂ and bicarbonate in different ways. The genetic composition of cyanobacterial blooms may therefore shift. In particular, strains with high-flux carbon uptake systems may benefit from the anticipated rise in inorganic carbon availability. Increasing temperatures also stimulate cyanobacterial growth. Many bloom-forming cyanobacteria and also green algae have temperature optima above 25°C, often exceeding the temperature optima of diatoms and dinoflagellates. Analysis of published data suggests that the temperature dependence of the growth rate of cyanobacteria exceeds that of green algae. Indirect effects of elevated temperature, like an earlier onset and longer duration of thermal stratification, may also shift the competitive balance in favor of buoyant cyanobacteria while eukaryotic algae are impaired by higher sedimentation losses. Furthermore, cyanobacteria differ from eukaryotic algae in that they can fix dinitrogen, and new insights show that the nitrogen-fixation activity of heterocystous cyanobacteria can be strongly stimulated at elevated temperatures. Models and lake studies indicate that the response of cyanobacterial growth to rising CO₂ concentrations and elevated temperatures can be suppressed by nutrient limitation. The greatest response of cyanobacterial blooms to climate change is therefore expected to occur in eutrophic and hypertrophic lakes.
