Research on Ultra-Wideband NLFM Waveform Synthesis and Grating Lobe Suppression

Ultra-wideband (UWB) nonlinear frequency modulation (NLFM) waveforms have the advantages of low sidelobes and high resolution. By extending the frequency domain wideband synthesis method to the NLFM waveform, the synthetic bandwidth will be limited, and the grating lobe will grow as the number of subpulses increases at a fixed synthetic bandwidth. Aiming for the highly periodic grating lobes caused by equally spaced splicing and small subpulse time-bandwidth products (TxBW), a multisubpulse UWB NLFM waveform synthesis method is proposed in this paper. Random frequency hopping and spectral correction are utilized to disperse the energy of periodic grating lobes and optimize the matched filter of the subpulse, thereby reducing notches and Fresnel ripples in the synthesized spectrum. The results of the hardware-in-the-loop simulation experiment show that the peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR) and the integral sidelobe ratio (ISLR) of the NLFM synthetic wideband waveform (SWW) obtained by 50 subpulses with a bandwidth of 36 MHz are improved by 4.8 dBs and 4.5 dBs, respectively, when compared to the frequency domain wideband synthesis method, and that the grating lobe is suppressed by an average of 10.6 dBs. It also performs well in terms of point target resolution, and it has potential for 2D radar super-resolution imaging.

A new Solid Waste and Wastewater (SWW) management software is presented for optimizing the life-cycle of emissions with carbon credit cost considerations. The software is the first to combine integrated solid waste and wastewater management systems under a single framework when introducing a food waste disposer (FWD) policy. The model/software offers a platform encompassing several tools for life cycle emissions accounting, optimization, as well as economic, policy, and sensitivity analysis. It provides the flexibility of selecting processes or modifying input parameters, as well as disaggregating emissions depending on the scope of accounting. The graphical user interface is applicable in the context of developed and developing economies with the ultimate objective to assist decision makers to allocate expenditures for emissions mitigation measures.

Light-induced catalytic transformation of ofloxacin by solar Fenton in various water matrices at a pilot plant: mineralization and characterization of major intermediate products

This work investigated the application of a solar driven advanced oxidation process (solar Fenton), for the degradation of the antibiotic ofloxacin (OFX) in various environmental matrices at a pilot-scale. All experiments were carried out in a compound parabolic collector pilot plant in the presence of doses of H2O2 (2.5 mg L(-1)) and at an initial Fe(2+) concentration of 2 mg L(-1). The water matrices used for the solar Fenton experiments were: demineralized water (DW), simulated natural freshwater (SW), simulated effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant (SWW) and pre-treated real effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plant (RE) to which OFX had been spiked at 10 mg L(-1). Dissolved organic carbon removal was found to be dependent on the chemical composition of the water matrix. OFX mineralization was higher in DW (78.1%) than in SW (58.3%) at 12 mg L(-1) of H2O2 consumption, implying the complexation of iron or the scavenging of hydroxyl radicals by the inorganic ions present in SW. On the other hand, the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in SWW and RE, led to lower mineralization per dose of H2O2 compared to DW and SW. The major transformation products (TPs) formed during the solar Fenton treatment of OFX, were elucidated using liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC-ToF-MS). The transformation of OFX proceeded through a defluorination reaction, accompanied by some degree of piperazine and quinolone substituent transformation while a hydroxylation mechanism occurred by attack of the hydroxyl radicals generated during the process leading to the formation of TPs in all the water matrices, seven of which were tentatively identified. The results obtained from the toxicity bioassays indicated that the toxicity originates from the DOM present in RE and its oxidation products formed during the photocatalytic treatment and not from the TPs resulted from the oxidation of OFX.
