Peroxydisulfate activation by CuO pellets in a fixed-bed column, operating mode and assessments for antibiotics degradation and urban wastewater disinfection

A fixed-bed column packed with copper oxide pellets (FBC-CuO) combined with peroxydisulfate (PDS) as a primary oxidant was assessed as an option for simultaneously wastewater decontamination (antibiotics) and disinfection (bacteria, viruses, and protozoa). Preliminary to these experiments, phenol was used as the target molecule to investigate the working mode of FBC-CuO under various operating conditions, such as varying flow rates, initial persulfate, and phenol concentrations. Then, the removal of a mix of five representative antibiotics (amoxicillin (AMX), cefalexin (CFX), ofloxacin (OFL), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and clarithromycin (CLA)) in secondary treated urban wastewater (STWW) was evaluated. AMX, CFX, and OFL were effectively removed by simply flowing through the FBC-CuO, and the addition of PDS (500 µM) systematically enhanced the degradation of all targeted antibiotics, which is also the necessary condition for the removal of SMX and CLA. Urban wastewater disinfection was evaluated by monitoring targeted pathogens originally in the STWW. A significant reduction of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, F-specific RNA bacteriophages was observed after the treatment by FBC-CuO with 500 µM PDS. X-ray diffraction measurement and scanning electron microscopy performed on CuO pellets before and after treatment confirmed that the structure of the catalyst was preserved without any phase segregation. Finally, quantification of Cu(II) at the outlet of FBC-CuO indicate a non-negligible but limited released. All these results underline the potential of the FBC-CuO combined with PDS at the field scale for the degradation of micropollutants and inactivation of pathogens in wastewater.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistance genes in different soil types irrigated with treated wastewater

Diminishing freshwater (FW) supplies necessitate the reuse of treated wastewater (TWW) for various purposes, like irrigation of agricultural lands. However, there is a growing concern that irrigation with TWW may transfer antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to the soil and crops. We hypothesized that TWW irrigation would increase the prevalence of antibiotic residues together with the corresponding ARGs in the irrigated soil. We further predicted that soil texture, especially pH, clay content, and organic matter variabilities, would change the antibiotic residues concentrations and thus ARGs dissemination. To test our predictions, three soils types (loamy-sand, loam, and clay) were irrigated with two water types (FW and TWW), over two consecutive seasons. We monitored physico-chemical parameters, the abundance of seven antibiotic residues, and their corresponding ARGs together with class 1 integron (intI1) in 54 water and soil samples collected at the end of the field experiments. The results revealed increase in antibiotics concentrations and ARGs relative abundance in TWW than FW. Yet, in the soil ARGs relative abundances were independent of the irrigation water quality, but dependent on the soil type, especially the clay content. Further, there were no clear associations between the targeted antibiotics or the presence of heavy metals and ARGs' relative abundance in the water or soil samples. Therefore, our results question the link between the discharge of antibiotics and heavy metals, and the dissemination of ARGs in soil environments.

Investigation of biomass production, crude protein and starch content in laboratory wastewater treatment systems planted with Lemna minor and Lemna gibba

The use of duckweed-based wastewater treatment systems for producing biomass with high crude protein and starch content was investigated in the current study. For this reason, three lab-scale systems were used; System 1 was planted with Lemna minor, System 2 with Lemna gibba and System 3 with the combination of the two duckweeds. The studied duckweeds were cultivated using secondary treated wastewater as substrate (Phase A), in the presence of excess NH₄-N (Phase B) and using water with no nutrients (Phase C). All systems achieved average NH₄-N removal higher that 90%. The specific duckweeds growth rates and the specific duckweeds growth rates normalized to the area ranged between 0.14 d^-1 and 8.9 g m^-2 d^-1 (System 1) to 0.19 d^-1 and 14.9 g m^-2 d^-1(System 3). The addition of NH₄-N resulted in a significant increase of biomass protein content, reaching 44.4% in System 3, 41.9% in System 2 and 39.4% in System 1. The transfer of biomass in water containing no nutrients resulted in the gradual increment of the starch content up to the end of the experiment. The highest starch content was achieved for the combination of the two duckweeds (46.1%), followed by L. gibba (44.9%) and L. minor (43.9%).

Wastewater alters feeding rate but not vitellogenin level of Gammarus fossarum (Amphipoda)

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents release complex mixtures of organic and inorganic micropollutants, including endocrine disrupting compounds, into receiving water bodies. These substances may cause adverse effects in aquatic communities as well as in ecosystem functions they provide. The aim of this study was to determine the potential impact of secondary treated wastewater released into a small Swiss stream on leaf litter decomposition based on feeding rates of the amphipod shredder Gammarus fossarum measured in situ. Additionally, endocrine disrupting effects downstream of the WWTP were investigated by measuring vitellogenin (vg) induction in male gammarids exposed in situ, as well as estrogen receptor activation using the Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES) involving passive sampler and grab water sample extracts. Extracts were also analysed for 424 organic micropollutants and selected transformation products. Gammarid feeding rate was significantly reduced 100, 200 and 400 m downstream of the WWTP effluent relative to the upstream site. While YES results showed significantly elevated estrogenicity at downstream sites, vg production in male gammarids was not induced. A laboratory experiment, in which gammarids were exposed to WWTP effluent, supported this observation. These results, hence, suggest that treated wastewater released into aquatic ecosystems impairs the ecosystem function of leaf litter decomposition. Vg levels in male gammarids measured by UPLC-MS/MS did, however, not alter.
