Abnormal multisensory temporal discrimination in Parkinson's disease

Cognitive deficits are prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD), ranging from mild deficits in perception and executive function to severe dementia. Multisensory integration (MSI), the ability to pool information from different sensory modalities to form a combined, coherent perception of the environment, is known to be impaired in PD. This study investigated the disruption of audiovisual MSI in PD patients by evaluating temporal discrimination ability between auditory and visual stimuli with different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). The experiment was conducted with Fifteen PD patients and fifteen age-matched healthy controls where participants were requested to report whether the audiovisual stimuli pairs were temporal simultaneous. The temporal binding window (TBW), the time during which sensory modalities are perceived as synchronous, was adapted as the comparison index between PD patients and healthy individuals. Our results showed that PD patients had a significantly wider TBW than healthy controls, indicating abnormal audiovisual temporal discrimination. Furthermore, PD patients had more difficulty in discriminating temporal asynchrony in visual-first, but not in auditory-first stimuli, compared to healthy controls. In contrast, no significant difference was observed for auditory-first stimuli. PD patients also had shorter reaction times than healthy controls regardless of stimulus priority. Together, our findings point to abnormal audiovisual temporal discrimination, a major component of MSI irregularity, in PD patients. These results have important implications for future models of MSI experiments and models that aim to uncover the underlying mechanism of MSI in patients afflicted with PD.

Cross-modality integration framework with prediction, perception and discrimination for video anomaly detection

Video anomaly detection is an important task for public security in the multimedia field. It aims to distinguish events that deviate from normal patterns. As important semantic representation, the textual information can effectively perceive different contents for anomaly detection. However, most existing methods primarily rely on visual modality, with limited incorporation of textual modality in anomaly detection. In this paper, a cross-modality integration framework (CIForAD) is proposed for anomaly detection, which combines both textual and visual modalities for prediction, perception and discrimination. Firstly, a feature fusion prediction (FUP) module is designed to predict the target regions by fusing the visual features and textual features for prompting, which can amplify the discriminative distance. Then an image-text semantic perception (ISP) module is developed to judge semantic consistency by associating the fine-grained visual features with textual features, where a strategy of local training and global inference is introduced to perceive local details and global semantic correlation. Finally, a self-supervised time attention discrimination (TAD) module is built to explore the inter-frame relation and further distinguish abnormal sequences from normal sequences. Extensive experiments on the three challenging benchmarks indicate that our CIForAD obtains state-of-the-art anomaly detection performance.

The neural basis of somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold as a paradigm for time processing in the sub-second range: An updated review

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

The temporal aspect of somesthesia is a feature of any somatosensory process and a pre-requisite for the elaboration of proper behavior. Time processing in the milliseconds range is crucial for most of behaviors in everyday life. The somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is the ability to perceive two successive stimuli as separate in time, and deals with time processing in this temporal range. Herein, we focus on the physiology of STDT, on a background of the anatomophysiology of somesthesia and the neurobiological substrates of timing.

METHODS

A review of the literature through PubMed & Cochrane databases until March 2023 was performed with inclusion and exclusion criteria following PRISMA recommendations.

RESULTS

1151 abstracts were identified. 4 duplicate records were discarded before screening. 957 abstracts were excluded because of redundancy, less relevant content or not English-written. 4 were added after revision. Eventually, 194 articles were included.

CONCLUSIONS

STDT encoding relies on intracortical inhibitory S1 function and is modulated by the basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical interplay through circuits involving the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway and probably the superior colliculus.

Enhanced temporal resolution of vision in action video game players

Video game play has been suggested to improve visual and attention processing. Nevertheless, while action video game play is highly dynamic, there is scarce research on how information is temporally discriminated at the millisecond level. This cross-sectional study investigates whether temporal discrimination at the millisecond level in vision varies across action video game players (VGPs; N = 23) and non-video game players (NVGPs; N = 23). Participants discriminated synchronous from asynchronous onsets of two visual targets in virtual reality, while their EEG and oculomotor movements were recorded. Results show an increased sensitivity to short asynchronies (11, 33 and 66 ms) in VGPs compared with NVGPs, which was especially marked at the start of the task, suggesting better temporal discrimination abilities. Pre-targets oculomotor freezing - the inhibition of small fixational saccades - was associated with correct temporal discrimination, probably revealing attentional preparation. However, this parameter did not differ between groups. EEG and reconstruction analyses suggest that the enhancement of temporal discrimination in VGPs during temporal discrimination is related to parieto-occipital processing, and a reduction of alpha-band (8-14 Hz) power and inter-trial phase coherence. Overall, the study reveals an enhanced ability in action video game players to discriminate in time visual events in close temporal proximity combined with reduced alpha-band oscillatory activities. Consequently, playing action video games is associated with an improved temporal resolution of vision.

Using adaptive psychophysics to identify the neural network reset time in subsecond interval timing

State-dependent network models of sub-second interval timing propose that duration is encoded in states of neuronal populations that need to reset prior to a novel timing operation to maintain optimal timing performance. Previous research has shown that the approximate boundary of this reset interval can be inferred by varying the inter-stimulus interval between two to-be-timed intervals. However, the estimated boundary of this reset interval is broad (250–500 ms) and remains under-specified with implications for the characteristics of state-dependent network dynamics sub-serving interval timing. Here, we probed the interval specificity of this reset boundary by manipulating the inter-stimulus interval between standard and comparison intervals in two sub-second auditory duration discrimination tasks (100 and 200 ms) and a control (pitch) discrimination task using adaptive psychophysics. We found that discrimination thresholds improved with the introduction of a 333 ms inter-stimulus interval relative to a 250 ms inter-stimulus interval in both duration discrimination tasks, but not in the control task. This effect corroborates previous findings of a breakpoint in the discrimination performance for sub-second stimulus interval pairs as a function of an incremental inter-stimulus delay but more precisely localizes the minimal inter-stimulus delay range. These results suggest that state-dependent networks sub-serving sub-second timing require approximately 250–333 ms for the network to reset to maintain optimal interval timing.

Electrophysiological correlates of the spatial temporal order judgment task

The study investigated auditory temporal processing on a tens of milliseconds scale that is the interval when two consecutive stimuli are processed either together or as distinct events. Distinctiveness is defined by one's ability to make correct order judgments of the presented sounds and is measured via the spatial temporal order judgement task (TOJ). The study aimed to identify electrophysiological indices of the TOJ performance. Tone pairs were presented with inter-stimulus intervals (ISI) varying between 25 and 75 ms while EEG was recorded. A pronounced amplitude change in the P2 interval was found between the event-related potential (ERP) of tone pairs having ISI = 55 and 65 ms, but it was a characteristic only of the group having poor behavioral thresholds. With the two groups combined, the amplitude change between these ERPs in the P2 interval showed a medium-size correlation with the behavioral threshold.

The perceived present: What is it, and what is it there for?

It is proposed that the perceived present is not a moment in time, but an information structure comprising an integrated set of products of perceptual processing. All information in the perceived present carries an informational time marker identifying it as "present". This marker is exclusive to information in the perceived present. There are other kinds of time markers, such as ordinality ("this stimulus occurred before that one") and duration ("this stimulus lasted for 50 ms"). These are different from the "present" time marker and may be attached to information regardless of whether it is in the perceived present or not. It is proposed that the perceived present is a very short-term and very high-capacity holding area for perceptual information. The maximum holding time for any given piece of information is ~100 ms: This is affected by the need to balance the value of informational persistence for further processing against the problem of obsolescence of the information. The main function of the perceived present is to facilitate access by other specialized, automatic processes.

Novel nose poke-based temporal discrimination tasks with concurrent in vivo calcium imaging in freely moving mice

The hippocampus has been known to process temporal information as part of memory formation. While time cells have been observed in the hippocampus and medial entorhinal cortex, a number of the behavioral tasks used present potential confounds that may cause some contamination of time cell observations due to animal movement. Here, we report the development of a novel nose poke-based temporal discrimination task designed to be used with in vivo calcium imaging for the analysis of hippocampal time cells in freely moving mice. First, we developed a ten second held nose poke paradigm for use in mice to deliver a purer time metric for the analysis of time cell activity in hippocampus CA1. Second, we developed a temporal discrimination task that involves the association of held nose poke durations of differing lengths with differential spatial cues presented in arms on a linear I-maze. Four of five mice achieved successful temporal discrimination within three weeks. Calcium imaging has been successfully performed in each of these tasks, with time cell activity being detected in the 10s nose poke task, and calcium waves being observed in discrete components of the temporal discrimination task. The newly developed behavior tasks in mice serve as novel tools to accelerate the study of time cell activity and examine the integration of time and space in episodic memory formation.

KU32 prevents 5-fluorouracil induced cognitive impairment

Chemotherapy induced cognitive impairment (i.e. chemobrain) involves acute and long-term deficits in memory, executive function, and processing speed. Animal studies investigating these cognitive deficits have had mixed results, potentially due to variability in the complexity of behavioral tasks across experiments. Further, common chemotherapy treatments such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) break down myelin integrity corresponding to hippocampal neurodegenerative deficits and mitochondrial dysfunction. There is little evidence, however, of pharmacological treatments that may target mitochondrial dysfunction. Using a differential reinforcement of low rates (DRL) task combining spatial and temporal components, the current study evaluated the preventative effects of the pharmacological agent KU32 on the behavior of rats treated with 5-FU (5-FU+Saline vs. 5FU+KU32). DRL performance was analyzed the day after the first set of injections (D1), the day after the second set of injections (D7) and the last day of the experiment (D14). The 5FU+KU32 group earned significantly more reinforcers on the DRL task at D7 and D14 than the 5FU+Saline group. Further, the 5FU+KU32 group showed significantly better temporal discrimination. The 5FU+KU32 showed within-group improvement in temporal discrimination from D7 to D14. No significant differences were observed in spatial discrimination, however, those in the 5FU+Saline group responded more frequently on T3 compared to the 5FU+KU32 group, highlighting temporal discrimination differences between groups. The current data suggest that KU32 shows promise in the prevention of chemotherapy induced impairments in temporal discrimination.

Representations of temporal information in short-term memory: Are they modality-specific?

Rattat and Picard (2012) reported that the coding of temporal information in short-term memory is modality-specific, that is, temporal information received via the visual (auditory) modality is stored as a visual (auditory) code. This conclusion was supported by modality-specific interference effects on visual and auditory duration discrimination, which were induced by secondary tasks (visual tracking or articulatory suppression), presented during a retention interval. The present study assessed the stability of these modality-specific interference effects. Our study did not replicate the selective interference pattern but rather indicated that articulatory suppression not only impairs short-term memory for auditory but also for visual durations. This result pattern supports a crossmodal or an abstract view of temporal encoding.

I can time with a little help from my friends: effect of social enrichment on timing processes in Pigeons (Columba livia)

There is evidence that impulsive decision-making is associated with errors in timing. However, there has been little attempt to identify the putative mechanism responsible for impulsive animals' timing errors. One means of manipulating impulsivity in non-human animals is providing different levels of access to conspecifics. These preclinical models have revealed that social isolation increases impulsive responding across a wide range of tasks. The goal of the present study was to determine whether social isolation modulates time perception in pigeons by inducing more variability or a bias to underestimate the passage of time in temporal judgments. A temporal bisection task was used to characterize time perception. One group of pigeons performed the bisection following social enrichment, and the remaining half of the pigeons were tested following social isolation. Results revealed pigeons in the social isolation condition categorized a temporal stimulus sample as "long" at shorter durations than pigeons in the social enrichment condition. These data highlight the mechanism(s) thought to underlie timing-based interventions aimed at reducing impulsivity in humans. Future work should consider whether impulsivity is produced by misperceptions of time or a reduced threshold for a response.

Choice and timing in pigeons under differing levels of food deprivation

State-dependent valuation learning (SDVL) is a preference for stimuli associated with relative food deprivation over stimuli associated with relative satiety. Pigeons were exposed to experimental conditions designed to investigate SDVL and to test the hypothesis that obtained relative immediacy during training predicts choice during test probes. Energy states were manipulated using a procedure that has previously revealed SDVL in starlings and pigeons. In Experiment 1, pigeons preferred the stimulus associated with deprivation in the first choice probe session, but were indifferent in the second. Changes in choice were consistent with changes in obtained relative immediacy. In Experiment 2, training parameters were altered and SDVL did not occur. Obtained relative immediacy again predicted choice. Results of both experiments provide evidence that obtained relative immediacy may be an important contributing factor to the SDVL phenomenon.
