Climate and local environment co-mediate the taxonomic and functional diversity of bacteria and archaea in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau rivers

Understanding the environmental response patterns of riverine microbiota is essential for predicting the potential impact of future environmental change on river ecosystems. Vulnerable plateau ecosystems are particularly sensitive to climate and local environmental changes, however, the environmental response patterns of the taxonomic and functional diversity of riverine microbiota remain unclear. Here, we conducted a systematic investigation of the taxonomic and functional diversity of bacteria and archaea from riparian soils, sediments, and water across the elevation of 1800- 4800 m in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau rivers. We found that within the elevation range of 1800 to 3800 m, riparian soils and sediments exhibited similarities and stabilities in microbial taxonomic and functional diversity, and water microbiomes were more sensitive with great fluctuations in microbial diversity. Beyond the elevation of 3800 m, microbial diversity declined across all riverine matrixes. Local environmental conditions can influence the sensitivity of microbiomes to climate change. The combination of critical climate and local environmental factors, including total nitrogen, total organic carbon, as well as climate variables associated with temperature and precipitation, provided better explanations for microbial diversity than single-factor analyses. Under the extremely adverse scenario of high greenhouse gas emission concentrations (SSP585), we anticipate that by the end of this century, the bacterial, archaeal, and microbial functional diversity across the river network of the Yangtze and Yellow source basin would potentially change by -16.9- 5.2 %, -16.1- 5.7 %, and -9.3- 6.4 %, respectively. Overall, climate and local environments jointly shaped the microbial diversity in plateau river ecosystems, and water microbiomes would provide early signs of environmental changes. Our study provides effective theoretical foundations for the conservation of river biodiversity and functional stability under environmental changes.

Ammonia oxidizers in river sediments of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and their adaptations to high-elevation conditions

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) as well as complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox) aerobically catalyze ammonia oxidation which plays essential roles in riverine nitrogen cycle. However, performances of these ammonia oxidizers in high-elevation river sediments have rarely been documented. This study investigated the abundance, community, and activity of ammonia oxidizers in five high-elevation rivers of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Comammox were dominant ammonia oxidizers in 23% of studied samples and the clade B was principal comammox type. amoA gene abundances of AOA and AOB in these high-elevation rivers were comparable to those in low-elevation rivers. However, in contrast to most studied low-elevation rivers, AOB amoA gene abundance outnumbered AOA in 92% samples, which might be caused by the lower temperature and more intense solar radiation of the QTP. Potential nitrification rates (PNRs) ranged from 0.02 to 2.95 nmol-N h^-1 g^-1 dry sediment. Ammonia concentration was the limiting factor to PNRs at some sites, and when ammonia was not limiting, the PNR: ammonia ratio was greater at higher temperatures. There was no apparent variation in ammonia oxidizer community compositions along the elevation gradient due to the high elevation (2687 to 4223 m) of our entire study area. However, compared with low-elevation rivers, the lower temperature, huge diurnal temperature change, and lower nutrient conditions in the QTP rivers shaped distinctive communities for ammonia oxidizers; the unique community characteristics were significantly correlated to PNRs. These results suggest that ammonia oxidizers in the five high-elevation rivers have adapted to high-elevation conditions; more research should be conducted to study their adaptation mechanisms and their roles in riverine nitrogen cycle.

Pollution, ecological-health risks, and sources of heavy metals in soil of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, especially the northeastern region, is not a pure land any more due to recently increasing anthropogenic activities. This study collected soil samples from 70 sites of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to evaluate pollution, ecological-health risks, and possible pollution sources of heavy metals. The concentrations of heavy metals in soil were relatively high. Values of geo-accumulation index exhibited that Hg pollution was the most serious meanwhile Hg possessed the strongest enrichment feature based on enrichment factor values. The modified degrees of contamination showed that about 54.3% and 17.1% of sampling sites were at moderate and high contamination degree while pollution load indexes illustrated that 72.9% and 27.1% of sampling sites possessed moderate and high contamination level, respectively. Ecological risk indexes of heavy metals in soil ranged from 234.6 to 3759.0, suggesting that most of sites were under considerable/very high risks. Cancer risks for adults and children were determined as high and high-very high levels while non-cancer risks for children were high although those for adults were low. Industrial source contributed to the main fraction of ecological and health risks. Summarily speaking, heavy metals in soil of the study area has caused significantly serious pollution and exerted high potential ecological and health risks, especially for children who are more susceptible to hurt from pollutants. Therefore, more efficient and strict pollution control and management in study area should be put out as soon as possible.

An overview on the organic pollution around the Qinghai-Tibet plateau: The thought-provoking situation

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau plays an important role in the ecological safety and human health of the surroundings due to its unique geographical position and function. Therefore, it is necessary to study the pollution status and potential risk in this area. This study summarizes the distribution of different organic pollutants in biota and environmental media of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Moreover, it also pays attention to the potential health risks of these organic pollutants. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were the most frequently detected in different matrices. In general, the carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants were ranked in the very-low to moderate range for both children and adults. The carcinogenic risks of organic pollutants in fish, food, and water for children were 1-2 times higher than those for adults, while risks of organic pollutants in soil/sediment and in air for children were generally 10.6-16.5 and 2.6-2.8 times higher than those for adults, respectively. The maximal hazard quotient for non-carcinogenic risk was 0.95 (potential risk for children posed by organic pollutants in yak milk of Ruoergai), almost reaching an unacceptable level. Therefore, the potential health risks could not be neglected, especially for children who were more likely to be affected by the pollutants.
