Reticular Chemistry in Pore Engineering of a Y-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Xenon/Krypton Separation

The fine-tuning of metal-organic framework (MOF) pore structures is of critical importance in developing energy-efficient xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) separation techniques. Capitalizing on reticular chemistry, we constructed a robust Y-based MOF (NU-1801) that is isoreticular to NPF-500 with a shortened organic ligand and a larger metal radius while maintaining the 4,8-connected flu topology, giving rise to a narrowed pore structure for the efficient separation of a Xe/Kr mixture. At 298 K and 1 bar, NU-1801 possessed a moderate Xe uptake of 2.79 mmol/g but exhibited a high Xe/Kr selectivity of 8.2 and an exceptional Xe/Kr uptake ratio of about 400%. NU-1801 could efficiently separate a Xe/Kr mixture (20:80, v/v), as validated by breakthrough experiments, due to the outstanding discrimination in van der Waals interactions of Xe and Kr toward the framework confirmed by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. This work highlights the importance of reticular chemistry in designing structure-specific MOFs for gas separation.

Efficient Xe/Kr Separation Based on a Lanthanide-Organic Framework with One-Dimensional Local Positively Charged Rhomboid Channels

Efficient xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) separation has played an important role in industry due to the wide application of high-purity Xe and with regard to the safe disposal of radioactive noble gases (⁸⁵Kr and ¹³³Xe). A less energy-demanding separation technology, adsorptive separation using porous solid materials, has been proposed to replace the traditional cryogenic distillation with intensive energy consumption. As a cutting-edge class of porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring permanent porosity, designable chemical functionalities, and tunable pore sizes hold great promise for Xe/Kr separation. Here, we report a two-dimensional (2D) lanthanide-organic framework (termed LPC-MOF, [Eu(Ccbp)(NO₃)(HCOO)]·DMF_0.3(H₂O)_2.5) with one-dimensional (1D) local positively charged rhomboid channels whose size matches well with the kinetic diameter of Xe, leading to its superior Xe/Kr separation performance. Column breakthrough experiments demonstrate that LPC-MOF exhibits a high Xe/Kr selectivity of 12.4 and an Xe adsorption amount of 3.39 mmol kg^-1 under simulated conditions for real used nuclear fuel (UNF)-reprocessing plants. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate not only the intrinsic mechanisms of Xe/Kr separation at the molecular level but also the detailed influence of the local positive charge (N⁺) on the performance of Xe/Kr separation in the MOF system.

Extrusion-Spheronization of UiO-66 and UiO-66_NH2 into Robust-Shaped Solids and Their Use for Gaseous Molecular Iodine, Xenon, and Krypton Adsorption

The use of an extrusion-spheronization process was investigated to prepare robust and highly porous extrudates and granules starting from UiO-66 and UiO-66_NH₂ metal-organic framework powders. As-produced materials were applied to the capture of gaseous iodine and the adsorption of xenon and krypton. In this study, biosourced chitosan and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) are used as binders, added in low amounts (less than 5 wt % of the dried solids), as well as a colloidal silica as a co-binder when required. Characterizations of the final shaped materials reveal that most physicochemical properties are retained, except the textural properties, which are impacted by the process and the proportion of binders (BET surface area reduction from 5 to 33%). On the other hand, the mechanical resistance of the shaped materials toward compression is greatly improved by the presence of binders and their respective contents, from 0.5 N for binderless UiO-66 granules to 17 N for UiO-66@HEC granules. UiO-66_NH₂-based granules demonstrated consequent iodine capture after 48 h, up to 527 mg/g, in line with the pristine UiO-66_NH₂ powder (565 mg/g) and proportionally to the retaining BET surface area (-5% after shaping). Analogously, the shaped materials presented xenon and krypton sorption isotherms correlated to their BET surface area and high predicted xenon/krypton selectivity, from 7.1 to 9.0. Therefore, binder-aided extrusion-spheronization is an adapted method to produce shaped solids with adequate mechanical resistance and retained functional properties.

Robust metal-organic framework with multiple traps for trace Xe/Kr separation

Direct separation of Xe and Kr from air or used nuclear fuel (UNF) off-gas by means of porous adsorbents is of industrial importance but is a very challenging task. In this work, we show a robust metal-organic framework (MOF), namely ECUT-60, which renders not only high chemical stability, but also unique structure with multiple traps. This leads to the ultrahigh Xe adsorption capacity, exceeding most reported porous materials. Impressively, this MOF also enables high selectivity of Xe over Kr, CO₂, O₂, and N₂, leading to the high-performance separation for trace quantitites of Xe/Kr from a simulated UNF reprocessing off-gas. The separation capability has been demonstrated by using dynamic breakthrough experiments, giving the record Xe uptake up to 70.4 mmol/kg and the production of 19.7 mmol/kg pure Xe. Consequently, ECUT-60 has promising potential in direct production of Xe from UNF off-gas or air. The separation mechanism, as unveiled by theoretical calculation, is attributed to the multiple traps in ECUT-60 that affords rigid restrict for Xe atom via van der Waals force.

Construction of an Anion-Pillared MOF Database and the Screening of MOFs Suitable for Xe/Kr Separation

The separation of xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) mixtures is a challenging process. Many porous materials allow the adsorption of both Xe and Kr but only with low selectivity. Anion-pillared metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring the anion groups as structural pillars, show potential in gas separations, but only a limited number of them have been synthesized. Here, we describe a collection of 936 anion-pillared MOFs based on 22 experimentally available structures. We performed density functional theory (DFT) optimization and then assigned density-derived electrostatic and chemical (DDEC) charges for each MOF to make them well suited to molecular simulations. The structural properties of the MOFs vary more strongly with the choice of the organic ligand than with other aspects like fluorine groups and metal centers. We then screened the entire collection of MOFs in the context of Xe/Kr separation at room temperature. Compared with previously reported MOFs, the interpenetrated MOF SIFSIX-6-Cd-i is predicted to perform better for Xe/Kr separations, with a good balance between working capacity (1.62 mmol/g) and separation selectivity (16.4) at 298 K and 100 kPa. We also found that the heterogeneity of fluorine groups within a MOF can help to enhance Xe working capacity without reducing the Xe/Kr selectivity, suggesting that synthesis of anion-pillared MOFs with mixed fluorine groups may lead to improved Xe/Kr separation performance.

Reticular Chemistry and the Discovery of a New Family of Rare Earth (4, 8)-Connected Metal-Organic Frameworks with csq Topology Based on RE4(μ3-O)2(COO)8 Clusters

In recent years, the design and discovery of new metal-organic framework (MOF) platforms with distinct structural features and tunable chemical composition has remarkably enhanced by applying reticular chemistry rules and the molecular building block (MBB) approach. We targeted the synthesis of new rare earth (RE)-MOF platforms based on a rectangular-shaped 4-c linker, acting as a rigid organic MBB. Accordingly, we designed and synthesized the organic ligand 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-3,6-dimethyl-benzene (H₄L), in which the two methyl groups attached to the central phenyl ring lock the four peripheral carboxyphenyl groups to an orthogonal/vertical position. We report here a new family of RE-MOFs featuring the novel inorganic building unit, RE₄(μ₃-O)₂ (RE: Y³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺, Er³⁺, and Yb³⁺), with planar D_2h symmetry. The rigid 4-c linker, H₄L, directs the in situ assembly of the unique 8-c RE₄(μ₃-O)₂(COO)₈ cluster, resulting in the formation of the first (4, 8)-c RE-MOFs with csq topology, RE-csq-MOF-1. The structures of the yttrium (Y-csq-MOF-1) and holmium (Ho-csq-MOF-1) analogues were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Y-csq-MOF-1 was successfully activated and tested for Xe/Kr separation. The results show that Y-csq-MOF-1 has high isosteric heat of adsorption for Xe (33.8 kJ mol^-1), with high Xe/Kr selectivity (IAST 12.1, Henry 12.9) and good Xe uptake (1.94 mmol g^-1 at 298 K and 1 bar), placing this MOF among the top-performing adsorbents for Xe/Kr separation.
