A Laser-Induced Graphene-Titanium(IV) Oxide Composite for Adsorption Enhanced Photodegradation of Methyl Orange

Numerous treatment methods such as biological digestion, chemical oxidation, and coagulation have been used to treat organic micropollutants. However, such wastewater treatment methods can be either inefficient, expensive, or environmentally unsound. Here, we embedded TiO₂ nanoparticles in laser-induced graphene (LIG) and obtained a highly efficient photocatalyst composite with pollutant adsorption properties. TiO₂ was added to LIG and lased to form a mixture of rutile and anatase TiO₂ with a decreased band gap (2.90 ± 0.06 eV). The LIG/TiO₂ composite adsorption and photodegradation properties were tested in solutions of a model pollutant, methyl orange (MO), and compared to the individual and mixed components. The adsorption capacity of the LIG/TiO₂ composite was 92 mg/g using 80 mg/L MO, and together the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation resulted in 92.8% MO removal in 10 min. Adsorption enhanced photodegradation, and a synergy factor of 2.57 was seen. Understanding how LIG can modify metal oxide catalysts and how adsorption can enhance photocatalysis might lead to more effective pollutant removal and offer alternative treatment methods for polluted water.

Critical Roles of Impurities and Imperfections in Various Phases of Materials

In many materials, impurities and imperfections play a critical role on the physical and chemical properties. In the present review, some examples of such materials are discussed. A bulk nanobubble (an ultrafine bubble) is stabilized against dissolution by hydrophobic impurities attached to the bubble surface. An acoustic cavitation threshold in various liquids decreases significantly by the presence of impurities such as solid particles, etc. The strength of brittle ceramics is determined by the size and number of pre-existing microcracks (imperfections) in the specimen. The size effect of a BaTiO₃ nanocrystal is influenced by the amount and species of adsorbates (impurities) on its surface as adsorbate-induced charge-screening changes the free energy. The dielectric constant of an assembly of BaTiO₃ nanocubes is influenced by a small tilt angle (imperfection) between two attached nanocubes, which induces strain inside a nanocube, and is also influenced by the spatial strain-relaxation due to defects and dislocations (imperfections), resulting in flexoelectric polarization.

New Procedure to Maintain Fecal Microbiota in a Dry Matrix Ready to Encapsulate

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is one of the recommended treatments for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, but endoscopy and available oral formulations still have several limitations in their preparation, storage, and administration. The need for a viable oral formulation that facilitates the implementation of this highly effective therapy in different settings has led us to test the microcrystalline cellulose particles as an adsorbent of concentrated filtered fresh feces in comparison to lyophilized feces. This free-flowing material can provide protection to bacteria and results in a dried product able to maintain the viability of the microbiota for a long time. Adsorbate formulation showed a stabilizing effect in gut microbiota, maintaining bacteria viability and preserving its diversity, and is a competitive option for lyophilized capsules.

Porphyrin Photoabsorption and Fluorescence Variation with Adsorptive Loading on Gold Nanoparticles

Here, we report the photophysical structure–property relationship of porphyrins adsorbed on gold nanoparticles. The number of porphyrin–alkanethiolate adsorbates per particle was adjusted by a post-synthetic thiol/thiolate exchange reaction on 1-dodecanethiolate–protected gold nanoparticles. Even with a low loading level of adsorbates (<10% of all thiolate sites on gold nanoparticles), the shoulder absorption at the Soret band was intensified, indicating the formation of aggregates of porphyrin adsorbates on the nanoparticles. Steady-state fluorescence quantum yields could be adjusted by the bulkiness of substituents at the meso-positions of the porphyrin or the methylene linker chain length, regardless of the porphyrin loading level and the nanoparticle diameter.

Pentaclethra macrophylla stem bark extract anchored on functionalized MWCNT-spent molecular sieve nanocomposite for the biosorption of hexavalent chromium

nsufficient innovative research on the sequestration of Cr(VI) from the aquatic ecosystem has made Cr(VI) a recalcitrant water contaminant that often affects water sources. In this work, a novel plant anchor-nanocomposite was fabricated from the spent molecular sieve, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and the extract from the stem bark of Pentaclethra macrophylla. It was envisaged that due to the phytochemical constituent of the modifier, this nanocomposite could also act as potent adsorbents for the treatment of Cr(VI) polluted water. To the best of our knowledge, the application of Pentaclethra macrophylla stem bark extract as a modifier for the green fabrication of nanocomposite has not been reported. The resulting composites showed good uptake capacity for Cr(VI) as well as efficient reusability.

An insight into Cadmium poisoning and its removal from aqueous sources by Graphene Adsorbents

Graphene alone, in modified form or its composites had find their explicit position in the field of adsorption technology and hence assist in detection and removal of heavy metals like Cd (permissible limit 0.1 mg/L), which can cause various physiological problems if entered in variety of biota. Attributed to their unique physiognomies graphene-based adsorbent had classed themselves superior as compared to other carbonaceous adsorbent like CNT's or activated carbon, etc. This assessment summarizes the validity of graphene and its composite as a superior adsorbent for decontamination of Cd from aqueous environment; in addition, this evaluation also pronounces the toxicity profile of trace graphene and necessity of regeneration of the adsorbent.

Adsorbate-driven cooling of carbene-based molecular junctions

We study the role of an NH2 adsorbate on the current-induced heating and cooling of a neighboring carbene-based molecular circuit. We use first-principles methods of inelastic tunneling transport based on density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's functions to calculate the rates of emission and absorbtion of vibrations by tunneling electrons, the population of vibrational modes and the energy stored in them. We find that the charge rearrangement resulting from the adsorbate gates the carbene electronic structure and reduces the density of carbene states near the Fermi level as a function of bias. These effects result in the cooling of carbene modes at all voltages compared to the "clean" carbene-based junction. We also find that the direct influence of adsorbate states is significantly smaller and tends to heat adsorbate vibrations. Our results highlight the important role of molecular adsorbates not only on the electronic and elastic transport properties but also on the current-induced energy exchange and stability under bias of single-molecule circuits.

Single-Particle Plasmon Voltammetry (spPV) for Detecting Anion Adsorption

Nanoparticle and thin film surface plasmons are highly sensitive to electrochemically induced dielectric changes. We exploited this sensitivity to detect reversible electrochemical potential-driven anion adsorption by developing single-particle plasmon voltammetry (spPV) using plasmonic nanoparticles. spPV was used to detect sulfate electroadsorption to individual Au nanoparticles. By comparing both semiconducting and metallic thin film substrates with Au nanoparticle monomers and dimers, we demonstrated that using Au film substrates improved the signal in detecting sulfate electroadsorption and desorption through adsorbate modulated thin film conductance. Using single-particle surface plasmon spectroscopic techniques, we constructed spPV to sense sulfate, acetate, and perchlorate adsorption on coupled Au nanoparticles. spPV extends dynamic spectroelectrochemical sensing to the single-nanoparticle level using both individual plasmon resonance modes and total scattering intensity fluctuations.

Studies of biosorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ from aqueous solutions using Adansonia digitata root powders

The potentials of Adansonia digitata root powders (ADRP) for adsorption of Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Cu(2+) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Physico-chemical analysis of the adsorbent (ADRP) shows that hydroxyl, carbonyl and amino groups were predominant on the surface of the adsorbent. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image revealed its high porosity and irregular pores in the adsorbent while the Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrum showed the major element with 53.0% Nitrogen, 23.8% carbon, 9.1% calcium, 7.5% potassium and 6.6% magnesium present. The found optimal conditions were: initial concentration of the metal ions = 0.5 mg/L, pH = 5, contact time = 90 min, adsorbent dose = 0.4 g and particle size = 32 µm. Freundlich isotherm showed good fit for the adsorption of Pb(2+), Cd(2+) and Cu(2+). Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm revealed that the adsorption processes were physisorption Cd(II) and Cu(II) but chemisorption with respect to Pb(II) ions. The kinetics and thermodynamic studies showed that Pseudo-second order and chemisorptions provided the best fit to the experimental data of Pb (II) ions only. Batch desorption result show that desorption in the acidic media for the metal ions were more rapid and over 90% of the metal ions were recovered from the biomass.

Enhancing electron mobility at the LaAlO₃ /SrTiO₃ interface by surface control

Mobility of electrons confined at the LaAlO₃ /SrTiO₃ interface is significantly enhanced by surface control using surface charges and adsorbates, reaching a low temperature value more than 20 000 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) . A uniform trend that mobility increases with decreasing sheet carrier density is observed.

Magnetic anisotropy of graphene quantum dots decorated with a ruthenium adatom

The creation of magnetic storage devices by decoration of a graphene sheet by magnetic transition-metal adatoms, utilizing the high in-plane versus out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE), has recently been proposed. This concept is extended in our density-functional-based modeling study by incorporating the influence of the graphene edge on the MAE. We consider triangular graphene flakes with both armchair and zigzag edges in which a single ruthenium adatom is placed at symmetrically inequivalent positions. Depending on the edge-type, the graphene edge was found to influence the MAE in opposite ways: for the armchair flake the MAE increases close to the edge, while the opposite is true for the zigzag edge. Additionally, in-plane pinning of the magnetization direction perpendicular to the edge itself is observed for the first time.

Programmable motion and patterning of molecules on solid surfaces

Adsorbed on a solid surface, a molecule can migrate and carry an electric dipole moment. A nonuniform electric field can direct the motion of the molecule. A collection of the same molecules may aggregate into a monolayer island on the solid surface. Place such molecules on a dielectric substrate surface, beneath which an array of electrodes is buried. By varying the voltages of the electrodes individually, it is possible to program molecular patterning, direct an island to move in a desired trajectory, or merge several islands into a larger one. The dexterity may lead to new technologies, such as reconfigurable molecular patterning and programmable molecular cars. This paper develops a phase field model to simulate the molecular motion and patterning under the combined actions of dipole moments, intermolecular forces, entropy, and electrodes.
