Oxolane Ammonium Salts (Muscarine-Like)-Synthesis and Microbiological Activity

Commercially available 2-deoxy-D-ribose was used to synthesize the appropriate oxolane derivative-(2R,3S)-2-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-3-ol-by reduction and dehydration/cyclization in an acidic aqueous solution. Its monotosyl derivative, as a result of the quaternization reaction, allowed us to obtain eight new muscarine-type derivatives containing a quaternary nitrogen atom and a hydroxyl group linked to the oxolane ring. Their structure was fully confirmed by the results of NMR, MS and IR analyses. The crystal structure of the pyridinium derivative showed a high similarity of the conformation of the oxolane ring to previously published crystal structures of muscarine. Two reference strains of Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853), two reference strains of Gram-positive staphylococci (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213) and four reference strains of pathogenic yeasts of the genus Candida spp. (Candida albicans SC5314, Candida glabrata DSM 11226, Candida krusei DSM 6128 and Candida parapsilosis DSM 5784) were selected for the evaluation of the antimicrobial potential of the synthesized compounds. The derivative containing the longest (decyl) chain attached to the quaternary nitrogen atom turned out to be the most active.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Monoselective C-H Methylation and d 3-Methylation of Arenes

Site-selective installation of C-Me bonds remains a powerful and sought-after tool to alter the chemical and pharmacological properties of a molecule. Direct C-H functionalization provides an attractive means of achieving this transformation. Such protocols, however, typically utilize harsh conditions and hazardous methylating agents with poor applicability toward late-stage functionalization. Furthermore, highly monoselective methylation protocols remain scarce. Herein, we report an efficient monoselective, directed ortho-methylation of arenes using N,N,N-trimethylanilinium salts as noncarcinogenic, bench-stable methylating agents. We extend this protocol to d ₃-methylation in addition to the late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutically active compounds. Detailed kinetic studies indicate the rate-limiting in situ formation of MeI is integral to the observed reactivity.

Exploring the Effect of Ammonium Iodide Salts Employed in Multication Perovskite Solar Cells with a Carbon Electrode

Perovskite solar cells that use carbon (C) as a replacement of the typical metal electrodes, which are most commonly employed, have received growing interest over the past years, owing to their low cost, ease of fabrication and high stability under ambient conditions. Even though Power Conversion Efficiencies (PCEs) have increased over the years, there is still room for improvement, in order to compete with metal-based devices, which exceed 25% efficiency. With the scope of increasing the PCE of Carbon based Perovskite Solar Cells (C-PSCs), in this work we have employed a series of ammonium iodides (ammonium iodide, ethylammonium iodide, tetrabutyl ammonium iodide, phenethylammonium iodide and 5-ammonium valeric acid iodide) as additives in the multiple cation-mixed halide perovskite precursor solution. This has led to a significant increase in the PCE of the corresponding devices, by having a positive impact on the photocurrent values obtained, which exhibited an increase exceeding 20%, from 19.8 mA/cm², for the reference perovskite, to 24 mA/cm², for the additive-based perovskite. At the same time, the ammonium iodide salts were used in a post-treatment method. By passivating the defects, which provide charge recombination centers, an improved performance of the C-PSCs has been achieved, with enhanced FF values reaching 59%, which is a promising result for C-PSCs, and V_oc values up to 850 mV. By combining the results of these parallel investigations, C-PSCs of the triple mesoscopic structure with a PCE exceeding 10% have been achieved, while the in-depth investigation of the effects of ammonium iodides in this PSC structure provide a fruitful insight towards the optimum exploitation of interface and bulk engineering, for high efficiency and stable C-PSCs, with a structure that is favorable for large area applications.

The effect of environmental conditions on the occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in wastewater and surface waters

Aims

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in the aquatic environment based on the water origin, seasonality and physico‐chemical properties.

Methods and Results

The occurrence of C. jejuni and C. coli was determined in waste (29) or surface (56) waters in four different seasons. The air and water temperatures were measured during sampling and chemical analyses of water samples for ammonium, chloride, chlorine, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and iron were performed. The thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. were more frequently detected in wastewater (59%; 17 positive samples) compared to surface water (38%; 21 positive samples), with the highest rate in autumn (67% of samples positive) and with a higher C. coli occurrence than C. jejuni (31% vs. 26%). Ammonium (above 0.2 mg/L) and chloride ion concentrations (above 60 mg/L) favour C. jejuni. Similarly, C. coli occurrence in water was supported by ammonium (above 0.2 mg/L), chloride (above 60 mg/L) and in addition by phosphate ion concentrations (below 0.7 mg/L).

Conclusions

Campylobacter presence in water is influenced by physico‐chemical parameters such as concentrations of ammonium and chloride ions.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Water environment is an alternative source of Campylobacter. The concentration of ammonium and chloride ions can be used as a basis for successful prediction of the potential occurrence of C. jejuni and C. coli in wastewater and surface water in future.

Highly Active Cooperative Lewis Acid-Ammonium Salt Catalyst for the Enantioselective Hydroboration of Ketones

Enantiopure secondary alcohols are fundamental high-value synthetic building blocks. One of the most attractive ways to get access to this compound class is the catalytic hydroboration. We describe a new concept for this reaction type that allowed for exceptional catalytic turnover numbers (up to 15 400), which were increased by around 1.5-3 orders of magnitude compared to the most active catalysts previously reported. In our concept an aprotic ammonium halide moiety cooperates with an oxophilic Lewis acid within the same catalyst molecule. Control experiments reveal that both catalytic centers are essential for the observed activity. Kinetic, spectroscopic and computational studies show that the hydride transfer is rate limiting and proceeds via a concerted mechanism, in which hydride at Boron is continuously displaced by iodide, reminiscent to an SN 2 reaction. The catalyst, which is accessible in high yields in few steps, was found to be stable during catalysis, readily recyclable and could be reused 10 times still efficiently working.

Synthesis of Chiral Helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes and Their Enantioselective Recognition Towards Chiral Guests Containing Aminoindan Groups

Starting from the enantiopure precursors, a pair of chiral macrocyclic arenes named helic[1]triptycene[3]arenes were conveniently synthesized. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the enantiomeric macrocyclic arenes exhibited mirror images, and the X-ray single crystal structures confirmed their absolute conformations as well. Moreover, the macrocyclic arenes showed strong complexation with secondary ammonium and primary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups. In particular, the chiral macrocyclic arenes exhibited enantioselective recognition ability towards the chiral secondary ammonium salts containing aminoindan groups with an enantioselective ratio up to 3.89.

Chiral Ionic Liquids: Structural Diversity, Properties and Applications in Selected Separation Techniques

Ionic liquids (ILs) are chemical compounds composed of ions with melting points below 100 °C exhibiting a design feature. ILs are commonly used as the so-called green solvents, reagents or highly efficient catalysts in varied chemical processes. The huge application potential of ionic liquids (IL) justifies the growing interest in these compounds. In the last decade, increasing attention has been devoted to the development of new methods in the synthesis of stable chiral ionic liquids (CILs) and their application in various separation techniques. The beginnings of the successful use of CILs to separate enantiomers date back to the 1990 s. Most chiral ILs are based on chiral cations or chiral anions. There is also a limited number of CILs possessing both a chiral cation and a chiral anion. Due to the high molecular diversity of both ions, of which at least one has a chiral center, we have the possibility to design a large variety of optically active structures, thus expanding the range of CIL applications. Research utilizing chiral ionic liquids only recently has become more popular. However, it is the area that still has great potential for future development. This review aimed to describe the diversity of structures, properties and examples of applications of chiral ionic liquids as new chiral solid materials and chiral components of the anisotropic environment, providing chiral recognition of enantiomeric analytes, which is useful in liquid chromatography, countercurrent chromatography and other various CIL-based extraction techniques including aqueous biphasic (ABS) extraction systems, solid-liquid two-phase systems, liquid-liquid extraction systems with hydrophilic CILs, liquid-liquid extraction systems with hydrophobic CILs, solid-phase extraction and induced-precipitation techniques developed in the recent years. The growing demand for pure enantiomers in the pharmaceutical and food industries sparks further development in the field of extraction and separation systems modified with CILs highlighting them as affordable and environmentally friendly both chiral selectors and solvents.

The Effect of Constituent Ratios and Varisized Ammonium Salts on the Performance of Two-Dimensional Perovskite Materials

Two-dimensional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high moisture resistance are a key topic in the photovoltaic field. However, their lower power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in comparison to 3 D PSCs is still an urgent problem to be solved. It is vital to understand the impact of constituent ratios and ammonium salt sizes on the photovoltaic performance and humidity stability. Based on the formula of (RNH₃ )₂ (MA)_n-1 Pb_n I_3n+1 (n=1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), a series of 2 D perovskites is prepared by introducing varisized ammonium salts of ethylammonium iodide (EAI), propylammonium iodide (PAI), and butylammonium iodide (BAI). The effects of the constituent ratios and varisized ammonium salts on the properties of the 2 D perovskites were studied. 2 D perovskite devices based on larger n and smaller ammonium salt size are found to exhibit better performances. However, the moisture resistance of the 2 D perovskite devices is higher when n is smaller and the ammonium salt size is larger. Therefore, the EA₂ MA₁₀ Pb₁₁ I₃₄ (n=11) 2 D perovskite device displays the best photovoltaic performance, with the highest PCE of 16.93 %, whereas BA₂ MA₂ Pb₃ I₁₀ (n=3) 2 D perovskite, with the largest contact angle of 79.8°, can retain over 85 % of the initial PCE after 1440 h aging at 50 % relative humidity. This work indicates the PCE and stability of 2 D perovskites can be conveniently and effectively adjusted by controlling the 2 D constituent ratios and ammonium salt sizes, so as to obtain efficient 2 D PSCs with high stability.

Gold Nanoclusters for Targeting Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus In Vivo

Widespread multidrug resistance caused by the abuse of antibiotics calls for novel strategies and materials. Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are scarcely explored for combating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in vivo. We herein synthesized a novel class of AuNCs, namely quaternary ammonium (QA) capped AuNCs (QA-AuNCs) as potent antibiotics selectively targeting MDR Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), in vivo. QA-AuNCs kill bacteria through a combined physicochemical mechanism, and show excellent therapeutic effects in both a skin infection model and a bacteremia model induced by MRSA. In addition, owing to their intense fluorescence, QA-AuNCs can be used for the discrimination of live/dead bacteria and bacteria counting, suggesting their potential for clinical theranostics.

Therapeutic Interference With Vascular Calcification-Lessons From Klotho-Hypomorphic Mice and Beyond

Medial vascular calcification, a major pathophysiological process associated with cardiovascular disease and mortality, involves osteo-/chondrogenic transdifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). In chronic kidney disease (CKD), osteo-/chondrogenic transdifferentiation of VSMCs and, thus, vascular calcification is mainly driven by hyperphosphatemia, resulting from impaired elimination of phosphate by the diseased kidneys. Hyperphosphatemia with subsequent vascular calcification is a hallmark of klotho-hypomorphic mice, which are characterized by rapid development of multiple age-related disorders and early death. In those animals, hyperphosphatemia results from unrestrained formation of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ with subsequent retention of calcium and phosphate. Analysis of klotho-hypomorphic mice and mice with vitamin D₃ overload uncovered several pathophysiological mechanisms participating in the orchestration of vascular calcification and several therapeutic opportunities to delay or even halt vascular calcification. The present brief review addresses the beneficial effects of bicarbonate, carbonic anhydrase inhibition, magnesium supplementation, mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) blockage, and ammonium salts. The case is made that bicarbonate is mainly effective by decreasing intestinal phosphate absorption, and that carbonic anhydrase inhibition leads to metabolic acidosis, which counteracts calcium-phosphate precipitation and VSMC transdifferentiation. Magnesium supplementation, MR blockage and ammonium salts are mainly effective by interference with osteo-/chondrogenic signaling in VSMCs. It should be pointed out that the, by far, most efficient substances are ammonium salts, which may virtually prevent vascular calcification. Future research will probably uncover further therapeutic options and, most importantly, reveal whether these observations in mice can be translated into treatment of patients suffering from vascular calcification, such as patients with CKD.

Calcite microneedle arrays produced by inorganic ion-assisted anisotropic dissolution of bulk calcite crystal

Besides studies on the mineralization process, research on the demineralization of minerals provides another way to understand the crystallization mechanism of biominerals and fabricate crystals with complicated morphologies. The formation of ordered arrays of c-axis-oriented calcite microneedles with a tri-symmetric structure and lengths of more than 20 μm was realized on a large scale for the first time through anisotropic dissolution of calcite substrates in undersaturated aqueous solution in the presence of ammonium salts. The lengths and the aspect ratios of the calcite microneedles can be tuned by simply changing the concentrations of the ammonium salts and the dissolution time. The shape of the transverse cross sections of the calcite microneedles obtained in the presence of NH4 Cl and NH4 Ac is almost regularly triangular. The tri-symmetric transverse cross-section geometry of the calcite microneedles could be attributed to the tri-symmetric feature of rhombohedral calcite atomic structures, the synergetic interactions between electrostatic interaction of ammonium ions and dangling surface carbonate groups, and the ion incorporation of halide ions.

(S)-(-)-(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂MeI salt as template in the enantioselective synthesis of the enantiopure two-dimensional (S)-(-)-(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂Me[ΛMnΔCr(C₂O₄)₃] ferromagnet

We describe herein the synthesis of (rac)- or enantiopure (S)-(-)-(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂MeI ammonium salts. These racemic and enantiopure ammonium salts were used as cationic templates to obtain new two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets [(rac)-(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂Me][MnCr(C₂O₄)₃] and [(S)-(-)-(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂Me][ΔMnΛ nCr(C₂O₄)₃]. The absolute configuration of the hexacoordinated Cr(III) metallic ion in the enantiopure 2D network was determined by a circular dichroism measurement. The structure of [(2-MeBu)N(Pr)₂Me][MnCr(C₂O₄)₃], established by single crystal X-ray diffraction, belongs to the chiral P63 space group. According to direct current (dc) magnetic measurements, these compounds are ferrromagnets with a temperature Tc = 6°K.

Integration of CO2 capture and mineral carbonation by using recyclable ammonium salts

A new approach to capture and store CO(2) by mineral carbonation using recyclable ammonium salts was studied. This process integrates CO(2) capture with mineral carbonation by employing NH(3), NH(4)HSO(4), and NH(4)HCO(3) in the capture, mineral dissolution, and carbonation steps, respectively. NH(4)HSO(4) and NH(3) can then be regenerated by thermal decomposition of (NH(4))(2)SO(4). The use of NH(4)HCO(3) as the source of CO(2) can avoid desorption and compression of CO(2). The mass ratio of Mg/NH(4)HCO(3)/NH(3) is the key factor controlling carbonation and the optimum ratio of 1:4:2 gives a conversion of Mg ions to hydromagnesite of 95.5%. Thermogravimetric analysis studies indicated that the regeneration efficiency of NH(4)HSO(4) and NH(3) in this process is 95%. The mass balance of the process shows that about 2.63 tonnes of serpentine, 0.12 tonnes of NH(4)HSO(4), 7.48 tonnes of NH(4)HCO(3), and 0.04 tonnes of NH(3) are required to sequester 1 tonne of CO(2) as hydromagnesite.
