Development of an HTS-SQUID-Based Receiver for Long-Range Magnetic Induction Communication in Extreme Environments

The communication range of magnetic-induction (MI) technology in extreme environments such as underwater or underground is limited by the dipole-like attenuation behavior of the magnetic field as well as the eddy current induced loss in conductive media, and therefore a highly sensitive receiver is generally required. In this work, we propose the use of a highly sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) in MI communication and try to provide a comprehensive investigation on developing a SQUID-based receiver for practical MI applications. A portable receiver scheme integrating a SQUID sensor and a coil-based flux transformer was proposed. The high sensitivity and long-range communication capability of the proposed receiver was experimentally demonstrated by spectroscopic measurements and reception experiments on a receiver prototype. Based on the experimental demonstrations, the sensitivity optimization of the proposed scheme was further investigated by simulation studies, which suggest that a communication distance exceeding 100 m and a channel capacity of ∼20 kb/s in underwater environment could be achieved based upon the optimization of the developed prototype. The results presented in this work have highlighted the potential of deploying SQUID sensors for long-range MI applications in extreme environments.

A Gulf in lockdown: How an enforced ban on recreational vessels increased dolphin and fish communication ranges

From midnight of 26 March 2020, New Zealand became one of the first countries to enter a strict lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19. The lockdown banned all non-essential services and travel both on land and sea. Overnight, the country's busiest coastal waterway, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, became devoid of almost all recreational and non-essential commercial vessels. An almost instant change in the marine soundscape ensued, with ambient sound levels in busy channels dropping nearly threefold the first 12 h. This sudden drop led fish and dolphins to experience an immediate increase in their communication ranges by up to an estimated 65%. Very low vessel activity during the lockdown (indicated by the presence of vessel noise over the day) revealed new insights into cumulative noise effects from vessels on auditory masking. For example, at sites nearer Auckland City, communication ranges increased approximately 18 m (22%) or 50 m (11%) for every 10% decrease in vessel activity for fish and dolphins, respectively. However, further from the city and in deeper water, these communication ranges were increased by approximately 13 m (31%) or 510 m (20%). These new data demonstrate how noise from small vessels can impact underwater soundscapes and how marine animals will have to adapt to ever-growing noise pollution.

Modeling and Optimization of Directly Modulated Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers

The present work details a novel approach to increase the transmitting sensitivity of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer arrays and performing the direct modulation of digital information on the same device. The direct modulation system can reach 3× higher signal-to-noise ratio level and 3× higher communication range (from 6.2 cm boosted to 18.6 cm) when compared to more traditional continuous wave drive at the same energy consumption levels. When compared for the same transmission performance, the direct modulation consumes 80% less energy compared to the continues wave. The increased performance is achieved with a switching circuit that allows to generate a short high-AC voltage on the ultrasonic array, by using an LC tank and a bipolar junction transistor, starting with a low-DC voltage, making it CMOS-compatible. Since the modulation signal can directly be formed by the transmitted bits (on/off keying encoding) this also serve as the modulation for the data itself, hence direct modulation. The working principle of the circuit is described, optimization is performed relative to several circuital parameters and a high-performance experimental application is demonstrated.

Communication Range Dynamics and Performance Analysis for a Self-Adaptive Transmission Power Controller

The deployment of the nodes in a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) is typically restricted by the sensing and acting coverage. This implies that the locations of the nodes may be, and usually are, not optimal from the point of view of the radio communication. Additionally, when the transmission power is tuned for those locations, there are other unpredictable factors that can cause connectivity failures, like interferences, signal fading due to passing objects and, of course, radio irregularities. A control-based self-adaptive system is a typical solution to improve the energy consumption while keeping good connectivity. In this paper, we explore how the communication range for each node evolves along the iterations of an energy saving self-adaptive transmission power controller when using different parameter sets in an outdoor scenario, providing a WSAN that automatically adapts to surrounding changes keeping good connectivity. The results obtained in this paper show how the parameters with the best performance keep a k-connected network, where k is in the range of the desired node degree plus or minus a specified tolerance value.
