Effect of sandblasting and acid surface pretreatment on the specific capacitance of CuO nanostructures grown by hot water treatment for supercapacitor electrode applications

Crystalline copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures with micro, nano, and micro-nano surface roughness were grown on Cu sheet substrates by a facile, scalable, low-cost, and low-temperature hot water treatment (HWT) method that simply involved immersing Cu sheet in DI water at 75 °C for 24 hours without any chemical additives. Various morphological features and sizes of CuO nanostructures were tuned by using different surface pretreatment techniques including acid treatment, sandblasting, or a combination of those two. The surface morphology of the prepared samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystal structure of the CuO nanostructures was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. To study the pseudocapacitive behavior, their potential supercapacitor performance, and equivalent series resistance, electrochemical analysis was done by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for all the CuO/Cu samples in 1 M of Na2SO4 electrolyte. Among all, the best supercapacitive performance was achieved for CuO/Cu samples pretreated with Sandblasting followed by Acid treatment resulting in a specific capacitance of about 104 F/g. The electrode with the Sandblasted + Acid pretreated sample showed a maximum of ~ 69% capacitive retention after 2000 consecutive cycles. Our results indicate that CuO nanostructures on Cu substrates prepared with different surface pretreatment conditions and grown by HWT can be promising electrodes for supercapacitor device applications.

Dropwise Condensation on Multiscale Bioinspired Metallic Surfaces with Nanofeatures

Nonwetting surfaces engineered from intrinsically hydrophilic metallic materials are promising for self-cleaning, anti-icing, or condensation heat transfer applications where the durability of commonly applied hydrophobic coatings is an issue. In this work, we fabricate and study the wetting behavior and the condensation performance on two metallic nonwetting surfaces with varying number and size of roughness tiers without the need for further hydrophobic coating procedure. On one hand, the surface resembling a rose petal exhibits a sticky nonwetting behavior as drops wet the microscopic roughness features with consequent enhanced drop adhesion, which leads to filmwise condensation. On the other hand, the surface resembling a lotus leaf provides super-repellent nonwetting behavior prompting the continuous nucleation, growth, and departure of spherical drops in a dropwise condensation fashion. On a lotus leaf surface, the third nanoscale roughness tier (created by chemical oxidation) combined with ambience exposure prompts the growth of drops in the Cassie state with the benefit of minimal condensate adhesion. The two different condensation behaviors reported are well supported by a drop surface energy analysis, which accounts for the different wetting performance and the surface structure underneath the condensing drops. Further, we coated the above-mentioned surfaces with polydimethylsiloxane, which resulted in filmwise condensation due to the smoothening of the different roughness tiers. Continuous dropwise condensation on a hierarchical bioinspired lotus leaf metallic surface without the need for a conformal hydrophobic coating is hence demonstrated, which offers a novel path for the design and manufacture of noncoated metallic super-repellent surfaces for condensation phase change applications, among others.

Green fabricated CuO nanobullets via Olea europaea leaf extract shows auspicious antimicrobial potential

In present investigation, copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures have been prepared via green chemistry. Olea europaea leaf extract act as strong chelating agent for tailoring physical as well as bio-medical characteristics of CuO at the nano-size. Physical characterisation such as scanning electron microscope analysis depicts the formation of homogenised spherical shape nanoparticles (NPs) with average size of 42 nm. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy further confirmed the crystalline pure phase and monoclinic structure. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) testing is performed to evaluate the relative concentration of bioactive molecules in the O. europaea leaf extract. From HPLC results capping action of organic molecules around CuO-NPs is hypothesised. The antimicrobial potency of biosynthesised CuO-NPs have been evaluated using colony forming unit (CFU) counting assay and disc diffusion method which shows a significant zone of inhibition against bacterial and fungal strains may be highly potential for future antimicrobial pharmaceutics. Furthermore, reduction of various precursors by plant extract will reduce environmental impact over chemical synthesis.
