Selectivity control towards CO versus H2 for photo-driven CO2 reduction with a novel Co(II) catalyst

Developing efficient catalysts for reducing carbon dioxide, a highly stable combustion waste product, is a relevant task to lower the atmospheric concentration of this greenhouse gas by upcycling. Selectivity towards CO2-reduction products is highly desirable, although it can be challenging to achieve since the metal-hydrides formation is sometimes favored and leads to H2 evolution. In this work, we designed a cobalt-based catalyst, and we present herein its physicochemical properties. Moreover, we tailored a fully earth-abundant photocatalytic system to achieve specifically CO2 reduction, optimizing efficiency and selectivity. By changing the conditions, we enhanced the turnover number (TON) of CO production from only 0.5 to more than 60 and the selectivity from 6% to 97% after four hours of irradiation at 420 nm. Further efficiency enhancement was achieved by adding 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol, producing CO with a TON up to 230, although at the expense of selectivity (54%).

Scalable Superabsorbers and Color Filters Based on Earth-Abundant Materials

Optical materials based on unconventional plasmonic metals (e.g., magnesium) have lately driven rising research interest for the quest of possibilities in nanophotonic applications. Several favorable attributes of Mg, such as earth abundancy, lightweight, biocompatibility/biodegradability, and its active reactions with water or hydrogen, have underpinned its emergence as an alternative nanophotonic material. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a thin film-based optical device composed exclusively of earth-abundant and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible materials (i.e., Mg, a-Si, and SiO₂). The devices can exhibit a spectrally selective and tunable near-unity resonant absorption with an ultrathin a-Si absorbing layer due to the strong interference effect in this high-index and lossy film. Alternatively, they can generate diverse reflective colors by appropriate tuning of the a-Si and SiO₂ layer thicknesses, including all the primary colors for RGB (red, green, blue) and CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) color spaces. In addition, the reflective hues of the devices can be notably altered in a zero power-consumption fashion by immersing them in water due to the resulted dissolution of the Mg back-reflection layer. These compelling features in combination with the lithography-free and scalable fabrication steps may promise their adoption in various photonic applications including solar energy harvesting, optical information security, optical modulation, and filtering as well as structure reuse and recycling.

Nanoscale Iron Redistribution during Thermochemical Decomposition of CaTi1-x Fe x O3-δ Alters the Electrical Transport Pathway: Implications for Oxygen-Transport Membranes, Electrocatalysis, and Photocatalysis

Potential applications of the earth-abundant, low-cost, and non-critical perovskite CaTi_1-x Fe _x O_3-δ in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and oxygen-transport membranes have motivated research to tune its chemical composition and morphology. However, investigations on the decomposition mechanism(s) of CaTi_1-x Fe _x O_3-δ under thermochemically reducing conditions are limited, and direct evidence of the nano- and atomic-level decomposition process is not available in the literature. In this work, the phase evolution of CaTi_1-x Fe _x O_3-δ (x = 0-0.4) was investigated in a H₂-containing atmosphere after heat treatments up to 600 °C. The results show that CaTi_1-x Fe _x O_3-δ maintained a stable perovskite phase at low Fe contents while exhibiting a phase decomposition to Fe/Fe oxide nanoparticles as the Fe content increases. In CaTi_0.7Fe_0.3O_3-δ and CaTi_0.6Fe_0.4O_3-δ, the phase evolution to Fe/Fe oxide was greatly influenced by the temperature: Only temperatures of 300 °C and greater facilitated phase evolution. Fully coherent Fe-rich and Fe-depleted perovskite nanodomains were observed directly by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Prior evidence for such nanodomain formation was not found, and it is thought to result from a near-surface Kirkendall-like phenomenon caused by Fe migration in the absence of Ca and Ti co-migration. Density functional theory simulations of Fe-doped bulk models reveal that Fe in an octahedral interstitial site is energetically more favorable than in a tetrahedral site. In addition to coherent nanodomains, agglomerated Fe/Fe oxide nanoparticles formed on the ceramic surface during decomposition, which altered the electrical transport mechanism. From temperature-dependent electrical conductivity measurements, it was found that heat treatment and phase decomposition change the transport mechanism from thermally activated p-type electronic conductivity through the perovskite to electronic conduction through the iron oxide formed by thermochemical decomposition. This understanding will be useful to those who are developing or employing this and similar earth-abundant functional perovskites for use under reducing conditions, at elevated temperatures, and when designing materials syntheses and processes.

Nanoscale Growth Initiation as a Pathway to Improve the Earth-Abundant Absorber Zinc Phosphide

Growth approaches that limit the interface area between layers to nanoscale regions are emerging as a promising pathway to limit the interface defect formation due to mismatching lattice parameters or thermal expansion coefficient. Interfacial defect mitigation is of great interest in photovoltaics as it opens up more material combinations for use in devices. Herein, an overview of the vapor-liquid-solid and selective area epitaxy growth approaches applied to zinc phosphide (Zn₃P₂), an earth-abundant absorber material, is presented. First, we show how different morphologies, including nanowires, nanopyramids, and thin films, can be achieved by tuning the growth conditions and growth mechanisms. The growth conditions are also shown to greatly impact the defect structure and composition of the grown material, which can vary considerably from the ideal stoichiometry (Zn₃P₂). Finally, the functional properties are characterized. The direct band gap could accurately be determined at 1.50 ± 0.1 eV, and through complementary density functional theory calculations, we can identify a range of higher-order band gap transitions observed through valence electron energy loss spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence. Furthermore, we outline the formation of rotated domains inside of the material, which are a potential origin of defect transitions that have been long observed in zinc phosphide but not yet explained. The basic understanding provided reinvigorates the potential use of earth-abundant II-V semiconductors in photovoltaic technology. Moreover, the transferrable nanoscale growth approaches have the potential to be applied to other material systems, as they mitigate the constraints of substrate-material combinations causing interface defects.

Iron-catalyzed domino coupling reactions of π-systems

The development of environmentally benign, inexpensive, and earth-abundant metal catalysts is desirable from both an ecological and economic standpoint. Certainly, in the past couple decades, iron has become a key player in the development of sustainable coupling chemistry and has become an indispensable tool in organic synthesis. Over the last ten years, organic chemistry has witnessed substantial improvements in efficient synthesis because of domino reactions. These protocols are more atom-economic, produce less waste, and demand less time compared to a classical stepwise reaction. Although iron-catalyzed domino reactions require a mindset that differs from the more routine noble-metal, homogenous iron catalysis they bear the chance to enable coupling reactions that rival that of noble-metal-catalysis. This review provides an overview of iron-catalyzed domino coupling reactions of π-systems. The classifications and reactivity paradigms examined should assist readers and provide guidance for the design of novel domino reactions.

Low-Toxic, Earth-Abundant Nanostructured Materials for Thermoelectric Applications

This article presents recent research directions in the study of Earth-abundant, cost-effective, and low-toxic advanced nanostructured materials for thermoelectric generator (TEG) applications. This study's critical aspect is to systematically evaluate the development of high-performance nanostructured thermoelectric (TE) materials from sustainable sources, which are expected to have a meaningful and enduring impact in developing a cost-effective TE system. We review both the performance and limitation aspects of these materials at multiple temperatures from experimental and theoretical viewpoints. Recent developments in these materials towards enhancing the dimensionless figure of merit, Seebeck coefficient, reduction of the thermal conductivity, and improvement of electrical conductivity have also been discussed in detail. Finally, the future direction and the prospects of these nanostructured materials have been proposed.

Emergence and Applications of Base Metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) in Hydroboration and Hydrosilylation

Base metal catalysis offers an alternative to reactions, which were once dominated by precious metals in hydrofunctionalization reactions. This review article details the development of some base metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) in the hydroboration and hydrosilylation reactions concomitant with a brief overview of recent advances in the field. Applications of both commercially available metal salts and well-defined metal complexes in catalysis and opportunities to further advance the field is discussed as well.

New and Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Production from Water Splitting: Inexpensive, Robust Metallic Glassy Ribbons Based on Iron and Cobalt

Efficient, stable electrocatalysts are required to promote the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to obtain hydrogen as a clean, sustainable fuel via water splitting. In the present work, ribbons of the metallic glass Fe₄₀Co₄₀P₁₃C₇ were produced using a conventional melt-spinning technique and assessed as electrocatalysts for HER. In 0.5 M H₂SO₄, these ribbons generated an overpotential of 118 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. This overpotential remained essentially constant over 20 h under these conditions. On the basis of the excellent properties, these glassy ribbons represent a new type of highly active, robust HER catalyst suitable for practical applications.
