Old is Gold: Electrolyte Aging Influences the Topography, Chemistry, and Bioactivity of Anodized TiO2 Nanopores

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanostructures including nanopores and nanotubes have been fabricated on titanium (Ti)-based orthopedic/dental implants via electrochemical anodization (EA) to enable local drug release and enhanced bioactivity. EA using organic electrolytes such as ethylene glycol often requires aging (repeated anodization of nontarget Ti) to fabricate stable well-ordered nanotopographies. However, limited information is available with respect to its influence on topography, chemistry, mechanical stability, and bioactivity of the fabricated structures. In the current study, titania nanopores (TNPs) using a similar voltage/time were fabricated using different ages of electrolyte (fresh/0 h to 30 h aged). Current density vs time plots of EA, changes in the electrolyte (pH, conductivity, and Ti/F ion concentration), and topographical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of the fabricated TNPs were compared. EA using 10-20 h electrolytes resulted in stable TNPs with uniform size and improved alignment (parallel to the underlying substrate microroughness). Additionally, to evaluate bioactivity, primary human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) were cultured onto various TNPs in vitro. The findings confirmed that the proliferation and morphology of hGFs were enhanced on 10-20 h aged electrolyte anodized TNPs. This pioneering study systematically investigates the optimization of anodization electrolyte toward fabricating nanoporous implants with desirable characteristics.

Towards Self-Organized Anodization of Aluminum in Malic Acid Solutions-New Aspects of Anodization in the Organic Acid

In this work, aluminum (Al) anodization in malic acid electrolytes of different concentrations (0.15 M, 0.25 M, and 0.5 M) was studied. The close-packed hexagonal pore structure was obtained for the first time in this organic acid in a 0.5 M solution, at 250 V and temperature of 5 °C. Moreover, the process was investigated as a function of the number of cycles carried out in the same electrolyte. A repetition of anodization under seemingly the same external electrochemical parameters (applied voltage, temperature, etc.) induced serious changes in the electrolyte. The changes were reflected in the current density vs. time curves and were most evident in the higher concentrated electrolytes. This phenomenon was tentatively explained by a massive incorporation of malate anions into anodic alumina (AAO) framework. The impoverishment of the electrolyte of the malate anions changed internal electrochemical conditions making easier the attraction of the anions to the Al anode and thus the AAO formation. The electrolyte modification was advantageous in terms of pore organization: In a 0.25 M solution, already after the second anodization, the pore arrangement transformed from irregular towards regular, hexagonal close-packed structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of this kind.

Effect of Aging-Induced Dioxolane Polymerization on the Electrochemistry of Carbon-Coated Lithium Sulfide

Lithium sulfide-based materials have been considered as potential positive electrodes for the next generation batteries. Lithium sulfide is the fully lithiated form of sulfur, i.e., they share the same high theoretical capacity. However, it has the benefit of already containing lithium, which allows making cells with lithium-free negative electrodes. Lithium sulfide, however, shares with sulfur the polysulfide dissolution drawback upon cycling. One possible solution to this problem is to envelop the active material particles with carbonaceous materials. In this work, we investigate the effect of a nitrogen-rich carbon coating on lithium sulfide particles. The effect of such coating on the surface properties and electrochemistry of lithium sulfide cathodes is investigated in details, in particular, regarding its interaction with fresh vs. aged electrolyte. The polymerization of dioxalane (DOL) due to aging is found to affect the electrochemistry of lithium sulfide and, interestingly, to improve the cycling performance.

Impact of Selected LiPF6 Hydrolysis Products on the High Voltage Stability of Lithium-Ion Battery Cells

Diverse LiPF₆ hydrolysis products evolve during lithium-ion battery cell operation at elevated operation temperatures and high operation voltages. However, their impact on the formation and stability of the electrode/electrolyte interfaces is not yet investigated and understood. In this work, literature-known hydrolysis products of LiPF₆ dimethyl fluorophosphate (DMFP) and diethyl fluorophosphate (DEFP) were synthesized and characterized. The use of DMFP and DEFP as electrolyte additive in 1 M LiPF₆ in EC:EMC (1:1, by wt) was investigated in LiNi_1/3Mn_1/3Co_1/3O₂/Li half cells. When charged to a cutoff potential of 4.6 V vs Li/Li⁺, the additive containing cells showed improved cycling stability, increased Coulombic efficiencies, and prolonged shelf life. Furthermore, low amounts (1 wt % in this study) of the aforementioned additives did not show any negative effect on the cycling stability of graphite/Li half cells. DMFP and DEFP are susceptible to oxidation and contribute to the formation of an effective cathode/electrolyte interphase as confirmed by means of electrochemical stability window determination, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of pristine and cycled electrodes, and they are supported by computational calculations.
