Impact of lowering fine particulate matter from major emission sources on mortality in Canada: A nationwide causal analysis

Emissions of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) from human activities have been linked to substantial disease burdens, but evidence regarding how reducing PM_2.5 at its sources would improve public health is sparse. We followed a population-based cohort of 2.7 million adults across Canada from 2007 through 2016. For each participant, we estimated annual mean concentrations of PM_2.5 and the fractional contributions to PM_2.5 from the five leading anthropogenic sources at their residential address using satellite observations in combination with a global atmospheric chemistry transport model. For each source, we estimated the causal effects of six hypothetical interventions on 10-y nonaccidental mortality risk using the parametric g-formula, a structural causal model. We conducted stratified analyses by age, sex, and income. This cohort would have experienced tangible health gains had contributions to PM_2.5 from any of the five sources been reduced. Compared with no intervention, a 10% annual reduction in PM_2.5 contributions from transportation and power generation, Canada's largest and fifth-largest anthropogenic sources, would have prevented approximately 175 (95%CI: 123-226) and 90 (95%CI: 63-117) deaths per million by 2016, respectively. A more intensive 50% reduction per year in PM_2.5 contributions from the two sources would have averted 360 and 185 deaths per million, respectively, by 2016. The potential health benefits were greater among men, older adults, and low-income earners. In Canada, where PM_2.5 levels are among the lowest worldwide, reducing PM_2.5 contributions from anthropogenic sources by as little as 10% annually would yield meaningful health gains.

Identification of Phthalates from Artificial Products in Chinese Kindergarten Classrooms and the Implications for Preschool Children's Exposure Assessments

Phthalates are typical chemical pollutants in kindergarten classrooms since numerous artificial products (e.g., polyvinyl chloride (PVC) floorings, soft polymers and plastic toys) that might contain phthalates are widely distributed in kindergarten classrooms. Although Chinese preschool children spend a considerable amount of their waking hours (>8 h/day) in kindergartens, phthalate exposure in such indoor environment has not been given much attention. In this study, the mass fractions of six phthalates in twenty-six artificial products (fifteen flat decoration materials and eleven plastic toys) commonly found in Chinese kindergarten classrooms were measured. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) was the most predominant compound in all materials. The emission characteristics of the DEHP from these materials were further investigated. The measured emission characteristics were used for predicting multi-phase DEHP concentrations in kindergarten classrooms by applying a mass transfer model. The modeled concentrations were comparable with those measured in the real environment, indicating that these products might be the major sources of DEHP in Chinese kindergarten classrooms. Preschool children’s exposure to DEHP was found to be 0.42 μg/kg/day in kindergartens under baseline conditions, accounting for 18% of the total exposure to DEHP in Chinese indoor environments.

Legacy and novel perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances in industrial wastewater and the receiving river water: Temporal changes in relative abundances of regulated compounds and alternatives

Concentrations of 28 novel and legacy perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in wastewater from 77 industrial plants in the largest industrial complex in Korea were determined. The industrial plants were of eight types (advanced electronic, battery, chemical, general electronic, glass and ceramic, metal, polymer, and textile). PFAS concentrations in river water receiving the wastewater were determined to assess the impact of wastewater from the industrial complex. Only 19 and nine target PFASs were detected in untreated industrial wastewater and river water, respectively. Novel PFASs such as F53B (6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonate) were not detected. The mean PFASs concentration in industrial wastewater treatment plant effluent was 5.18 µg/L. The mean total PFASs concentration was highest in advanced electronic plant effluent, second highest in general electronic plant effluent, and lowest in battery and chemical plant effluents. Perfluorohexane sulfonate was the dominant homolog, being detected in effluent from plants of all classes and contributing 96% of total discharged PFASs by mass. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (included in the Stockholm Convention) use has decreased markedly since previous studies. Perfluorooctane sulfonate has largely been replaced by PFASs with fewer than seven carbon atoms. A similar change was found for river water receiving industrial wastewater.

[Accurate Identification of Ambient VOCs Emission Sources in an Industrial Park Using On-Line Monitoring Data]

To accurately identify and locate ambient volatile organic compounds(VOCs)emission sources in industrial parks, a continuous online GC-FID method was used to monitor 43 kinds of VOCs on an hourly basis during January 2017 at five sites in an industrial park. A statistical analysis and a PMF model were used to analyze the sources of VOCs, and by combining with CPF and enterprise emission information, the location of each pollution source was accurately identified. The average VOCs concentration was 56.40×10^-9 and the highest concentration of alkanes was observed at four sites, with the exception of one site. Ethane, propane, ethylene, toluene, isobutane, n-butane, and acetylene were the main contributors. Ambient VOCs in the park mainly derives from five sources:urban transmission, butane leakage, process emissions, storage tank emissions, and ethylene synthesis. The enterprises in the zone B1, A1-A3, C1-C2, F4, E4-E6, F4-F6, and the canal loading and unloading area are the main emission areas of the pollution sources. Using online monitoring data, the research combined a PMF model, meteorological conditions, and corporate emissions information to achieve precise positioning of the pollution sources of VOCs in the industrial park, thus providing a basis for the supervision and management of corporate emissions in industrial parks.
