Ferromagnetic Half-Metal Cyanamides Cr(NCN)2 Predicted from First Principles Investigation

The stability, physical properties, and electronic structures of Cr(NCN)₂ were studied using density functional theory with explicit electronic correlation (GGA+U). The calculated results indicate that Cr(NCN)₂ is a ferromagnetic and half-metal, both thermodynamically and elastically stable. A comparative study on the electronic structures of Cr(NCN)₂ and CrO₂ shows that the Cr atoms in both compounds are in one crystallographically equivalent site, with an ideal 4+ valence state. In CrO₂, the Cr atoms at the corner and center sites have different magnetic moments and orbital occupancies, moreover, there is a large difference between the intra- (12.1 meV) and inter-chain (31.2 meV) magnetic couplings, which is significantly weakened by C atoms in Cr(NCN)₂.

Effect of Guest Atom Composition on the Structural and Vibrational Properties of the Type II Clathrate-Based Materials AxSi136, AxGe136 and AxSn136 (A = Na, K, Rb, Cs; 0 ≤ x ≤ 24)

Type II clathrates are interesting due to their potential thermoelectric applications. Powdered X-ray diffraction (XRD) data and density functional calculations for Na_xSi₁₃₆ found a lattice contraction as x increases for 0 < x < 8 and an expansion as x increases for x > 8. This is explained by XRD data that shows that as x increases, the Si₂₈ cages are filled first for x < 8 and the Si₂₀ cages are then filled for x > 8. Motivated by this work, here we report the results of first-principles calculations of the structural and vibrational properties of the Type II clathrate compounds A_xSi₁₃₆, A_xGe₁₃₆, and A_xSn₁₃₆. We present results for the variation of the lattice constants, bulk moduli, and other structural parameters with x. These are contrasted for the Si, Ge, and Sn compounds and for guests A = Na, K, Rb, and Cs. We also present calculated results of phonon dispersion relations for Na₄Si₁₃₆, Na₄Ge₁₃₆, and Na₄Sn₁₃₆ and we compare these for the three materials. Finally, we present calculated results for the elastic constants in Na_xSi₁₃₆, Na_xGe₁₃₆, and Na_xSn₁₃₆ for x = 4 and 8. These are compared for the three hosts, as well as for the two compositions.

Energetic Study of Helium Cluster Nucleation and Growth in 14YWT through First Principles

First principles calculations have been performed to energetically investigate the helium cluster nucleation, formation and growth behavior in the nano-structured ferritic alloy 14YWT. The helium displays strong affinity to the oxygen:vacancy (O:Vac) pair. By investigating various local environments of the vacancy, we find that the energy cost for He cluster growth increases with the appearance of solutes in the reference unit. He atom tends to join the He cluster in the directions away from the solute atoms. Meanwhile, the He cluster tends to expand in the directions away from the solute atoms. A growth criterion is proposed based on the elastic instability strain of the perfect iron lattice in order to determine the maximum number of He atoms at the vacancy site. We find that up to seven He atoms can be trapped at a single vacancy. However, it is reduced to five if the vacancy is pre-occupied by an oxygen atom. Furthermore, the solute atoms within nanoclusters, such as Ti and Y, will greatly limit the growth of the He cluster. A migration energy barrier study is performed to discuss the reduced mobility of the He atom/He cluster in 14YWT.

High-pressure study of binary thorium compounds from first principles theory and comparisons with experiment

The high-pressure structural behaviour of a series of binary thorium compounds ThX (X = C, N, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se, Te) is studied using the all-electron full potential linear muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO) method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange and correlation potential. The calculated equlibrium lattice parameters and bulk moduli, as well as the equations of state agree well with experimental results. New experiments are reported for ThBi and ThN. Calculations are performed for the ThX compounds in the NaCl- and CsCl-type crystal structures, and structural phase transitions from NaCl to CsCl are found in ThP, ThAs, ThSb and ThSe at pressures of 26.1, 22.1, 8.1 and 23.2 GPa, respectively, in excellent agreement with experimental results. ThC, ThN and ThS are found to be stable in the NaCl structure, and ThBi and ThTe in the CsCl structure, for pressures below 50 GPa. The electronic structures of the ThX compounds are studied using the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method (G: Green function, W: dynamically screened interaction).
