Effect of Molecular Weight on Phase Equilibrium in the Polystyrene-Poly(methyl methacrylate) System

Data on the solubility of oligomer polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) of various molecular weights have been obtained. The binodal and spinodal curves of the phase state diagram with the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) are constructed through simulation within the framework of the Flory-Huggins theory. The influence of the molecular weight of polymers on the contribution to their mixing has been compared, and correlation curves have been plotted. The interaction parameters were calculated and the mixing thermodynamics of the components was evaluated. The largest contribution was made by the entropy component. Also, it has been shown using IR spectroscopy that there is no interaction between the functional groups of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) in a homogeneous mixture.

Investigation of Solution Behavior of Antidepressant Imipramine Hydrochloride Drug and Non-Ionic Surfactant Mixture: Experimental and Theoretical Study

In this paper, the interaction of imipramine hydrochloride (IMP, antidepressant drug) and a non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) mixture in five different ratios through the tensiometric method in different solvents (aqueous/0.050 mol·kg⁻¹ aqueous NaCl/0.250 mol·kg⁻¹ aqueous urea (U)) were examined thoroughly at a temperature of 298 K. UV–Visible studies in an aqueous system of IMP + TX-100 mixtures were also investigated and discussed in detail. The pure (IMP and TX-100) along with the mixtures’ critical micelle concentration (cmc) were assessed by a tensiometric technique. The obtained deviation of the mixtures’ cmc values from their ideal values revealed the nonideal behavior of IMP + TX-100 mixtures amongst IMP and TX-100. Compared to aqueous systems, in the presence of aqueous NaCl, several changes in micelles/mixed micelles occurred, and hence a synergism/attractive interaction amongst components was found increased while in the existence of U, the synergism/attractive interaction between them decreased. The evaluated interaction parameter (β^Rb) value of mixed micelles showed the attractive or synergism between the IMP and TX-100. Various evaluated thermodynamic parameters in an aqueous system showed that the mixed micellization of the IMP + TX-100 mixture was an entropically spontaneous phenomenon, although the existence of salt in all studied systems can somewhat increase the spontaneity of the micellization process and in the aqueous U system, the spontaneity of the micellization process decreased. In an aqueous system, the interaction between IMP and TX-100 was also confirmed by UV–Visible study.

Miscibility Tuning for Optimizing Phase Separation and Vertical Distribution toward Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Blending multidonor or multiacceptor organic materials as ternary devices has been recognized as an efficient and potential method to improve the power conversion efficiency of bulk heterojunction devices or single-junction components in tandem design. In this work, a highly crystalline molecule, DRCN5T, is involved into a PTB7-Th:PC70BM system to fabricate large-area organic solar cells (OSCs) whose blend film thickness is up to 270 nm, achieving an impressive performance of 11.1%. The significant improvement of OSCs after adding DRCN5T is due to the formation of an interconnected fibrous network with decreased π-π stacking and enhanced domain purity, in addition to the optimized vertical distribution of PTB7-Th and PC70BM, producing more effective charge separation, transport, and collection. The optimized morphology and performance are actually determined by the miscibility in different components, which can be quantitatively described by the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter of -0.80 and 2.94 in DRCN5T:PTB7-Th and DRCN5T:PC70BM blends, respectively. The findings in this work can potentially guide the selection of an appropriate third additive for high-performance OSCs for the sake of large-area printing and roll-to-roll fabrication from the view of miscibility.

Waterbowls: Reducing Impacting Droplet Interactions by Momentum Redirection

Superhydrophobic surfaces can dramatically reduce the transport of mass or energy from impacting droplets by making them bounce off. Such transport processes are dependent on both the contact time and the contact area between the drop and the surface. To reduce transport, recent studies have focused on reducing the contact time. However, the contact area, which is dictated by the conformal spreading of the droplet, remains large, thereby limiting the reduction in the overall transport. Here, we show how surfaces can be designed to redirect the momentum of the spreading lamella causing it to lift off into 3-dimensional shapes, thereby dramatically reducing the contact area. We design superhydrophobic surfaces with an in-plane discontinuity leading to the accumulation of vertical momentum resulting in the out-of-plane ejection of the lamella into water bowls. We demonstrate a 2-fold reduction in the heat transfer between a cold rain and a warm surface. These insights can be broadly applied to other transport phenomena involving mass and energy exchange to limit heat loss under precipitation, icing of surfaces, reduce salt deposition on a surface exposed to ocean spray, or inhibit the formation of a water film on wings or wind turbine blades.

Fast Optical Humidity Sensor Based on Hydrogel Thin Film Expansion for Harsh Environment

With the application of a recently developed deposition method called initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), responsive hydrogel thin films in the order of a few hundred nanometers were created. When in contact with humid air, the hydrogel layer increases its thickness considerably. The measurement of the thickness change was realized interferometrically with a laser and a broadband light source in two different implementations. The relative change in thickness with respect to humidity can be described with the Flory⁻Huggins theory. The required Flory⁻Huggins interaction parameter was determined for the actual hydrogel composition. The setup was designed without electric components in the vicinity of the active sensor layer and is therefore applicable in harsh environments such as explosive or corrosive ones. The implemented sensor prototype delivered reproducible relative humidity ( R H ) values and the achieved response time for an abrupt change of the humidity τ 63 ≤ 2.5 s was about three times faster compared to one of the fastest commercially available sensors on the market.

Dissipative Particle Dynamics Investigation of the Transport of Salicylic Acid through a Simulated In Vitro Skin Permeation Model

Permeation models are often used to determine diffusion properties of a drug through a membrane as it is released from a delivery system. In order to circumvent problematic in vivo studies, diffusion studies can be performed in vitro, using (semi-)synthetic membranes. In this study salicylic acid permeation was studied, employing a nitrocellulose membrane. Both saturated and unsaturated salicylic acid solutions were studied. Additionally, the transport of salicylic acid through the nitrocellulose membrane was simulated by computational modelling. Experimental observations could be explained by the transport mechanism that was revealed by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The DPD model was developed with the aid of atomistic scale molecular dynamics (AA-MD). The choice of a suitable model membrane can therefore, be predicted by AA-MD and DPD simulations. Additionally, the difference in the magnitude of release from saturated and unsaturated salicylic acid and solutions could also be observed with DPD. Moreover, computational studies can reveal hidden variables such as membrane-permeant interaction that cannot be measured experimentally. A recommendation is made for the development of future model permeation membranes is to incorporate computational modelling to aid the choice of model.

Enhancing the Compatibility of Poly (1,4-butylene adipate) and Phenoxy Resin in Blends

This work concerns the enhancement in the compatibility of blends of poly (1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA) with poly (hydroxy ether of bisphenol-A) (phenoxy) via alcoholytic exchange. Results on the thermal behavior and morphology show that the blended PBA/phenoxy system exhibits a homogeneous phase and a composition-dependent glass transition temperature (T_g). The interaction parameter (χ₁₂) of PBA/phenoxy blends was calculated using the melting point depression method and was found to be −0.336. However, the compatibilization of PBA/phenoxy blends can be enhanced by chemical exchange reactions between PBA and phenoxy upon annealing. Annealed PBA/phenoxy blends were found to have a homogeneous phase with a higher T_g than that of the blended samples, and a smooth surface topography that could be improved by annealing at high temperature. The results of this investigation demonstrate that promotional phase compatibilization in the PBA/phenoxy blend can only be obtained upon thermal annealing, thus causing transreactions to occur between the dangling –OH of the phenoxy and the ester functional groups in PBA. Extensive transreactions cause alcoholytic exchange between the PBA and phenoxy to form a network, thus reducing the mobility of the polymer chain. Finally, the crystallinity of PBA decreased as the degree of transreaction in the blends increased.

Enhancing the Directed Self-assembly Kinetics of Block Copolymers Using Binary Solvent Mixtures

The rapid pattern formation of well-ordered block copolymer (BCP) nanostructures is practical for next-generation nanolithography applications. However, there remain critical hurdles to achieve the rapid self-assembly of BCPs with a high Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ), owing to their slow kinetics. In this article, we report that a binary solvent vapor annealing methodology can significantly accelerate the self-assembly kinetics of poly(dimethylsiloxane-b-styrene) (PDMS-b-PS) BCPs with a high-χ. In particular, we systemically analyzed the effects of the mixing ratio of a binary solvent composed of a PDMS-selective solvent (heptane) and a PS-selective solvent (toluene), showing an ultrafast self-assembly time (≤1 min) to obtain a well-ordered nanostructure. Moreover, we successfully accomplished extremely fast generation of sub-20 nm dot patterns within an annealing time of 10 s in a 300 nm-wide trench by means of binary solvent annealing. We believe that these results are also applicable to other solvent-based annealing systems of BCPs and that they will contribute to the realization of next-generation ultrafine lithography applications.
