Association of Serum Bilirubin and Lipid Ratio (Total Cholesterol/(High-Density Lipoprotein + Bilirubin)) in Coronary Artery Disease: A Case-Control Study at a Tertiary Care Hospital. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in industrialized societies. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential association between lipid ratios and CAD risk and explore their diagnostic performance compared to traditional lipid profile parameters and total bilirubin levels. METHODS A total of 50 cases with CAD and 50 controls without CAD were recruited. Clinical data, including age, gender, comorbidities, blood pressure, glucose levels, smoking history, cardiovascular examination findings, and electrocardiogram (ECG) results, were collected. Lipid profile parameters (total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and triglycerides) and total bilirubin levels were measured. Lipid ratios, including cholesterol (CHO)/HDL, LDL/HDL, HDL + bilirubin, LDL/(HDL + bilirubin), and TC/(HDL + bilirubin), were calculated. RESULTS Significant differences were observed between cases and controls for comorbidities, including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity (p = 0.025), and ECG findings (p < 0.001). Lipid profile parameters were significantly different between cases and controls (p < 0.001). Lipid ratios also showed significant differences (p < 0.001) and demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in identifying CAD. Among the ratios, LDL/HDL had the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.977, followed by CHO/HDL (AUC = 0.913), LDL/(HDL + bilirubin) (AUC = 0.903), and TC/(HDL + bilirubin) (AUC = 0.807). Total bilirubin alone did not show a significant association with CAD (AUC = 0.590, p = 0.119). CONCLUSION Lipid ratios (CHO/HDL, LDL/HDL, HDL + bilirubin, LDL/(HDL + bilirubin), and TC/(HDL + bilirubin)) showed promising potential as predictors of CAD, outperforming traditional lipid profile parameters and total bilirubin levels. These ratios could serve as valuable diagnostic tools in identifying individuals at higher risk of CAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The diagnostic value of lipid and lipoprotein ratios for NAFLD in newly diagnosed T2DM remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between lipid and lipoprotein ratios and the risk of NAFLD in subjects with newly diagnosed T2DM. METHODS A total of 371 newly diagnosed T2DM patients with NAFLD and 360 newly diagnosed T2DM without NAFLD were enrolled in the study. Demographics variables, clinical history and serum biochemical indicators of the subjects were collected. Six lipid and lipoprotein ratios, including triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, cholesterol to HDL-C (TC/HDL-C) ratio, free fatty acid to HDL-C (FFA/HDL-C) ratio, uric acid to HDL-C (UA/HDL-C) ratio, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol to HDL-C (LDL-C/HDL-C) ratio, apolipoprotein B to apolipoprotein A1 (APOB/A1) ratio, were calculated. We compared the differences in lipid and lipoprotein ratios between NAFLD group and non-NAFLD group, and further analyzed the correlation and diagnostic value of these ratios with the risk of NAFLD in the newly diagnosed T2DM patients. RESULTS The proportion of NAFLD in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM increased progressively over the range Q1 to Q4 of six lipid ratios, including the TG/HDL-C ratio, TC/HDL-C ratio, FFA/HDL-C ratio, UA/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and APOB/A1 ratio. After adjusting for multiple confounders, TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, UA/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C and APOB/A1 were all strongly correlated with the risk of NAFLD in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. In patients with newly-onset T2DM, the TG/HDL-C ratio was the most powerful indicator for the diagnosis of NAFLD among all six indicators, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.732 (95% CI 0.696-0.769). In addition, TG/HDL-C ratio>1.405, with a sensitivity of 73.8% and specificity of 60.1%, had a good diagnostic ability for NAFLD in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. CONCLUSIONS The TG/HDL-C ratio may be an effective marker to help identify the risk of NAFLD in patients with newly diagnosed T2DM.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the differential effects of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) on lipid profiles and lipid ratios between patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and without CAD. The data of 872 CAD patients and 774 non-CAD controls were extracted from the information system of hospitalized patients. Serum homocysteine (Hcy), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein (Apo) AI, and ApoB concentrations were detected. HHcy was defined as a serum level of Hcy ≥ 15 μmol/L. The CAD patients had lower levels of HDL-C and ApoAI and higher levels of Hcy than the controls (P < .05). Serum TGs and HDL-C were negatively correlated with Hcy in controls. Serum HDL-C and ApoAI were negatively correlated with Hcy, and the ratios of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL/HDL-C, and ApoB/ApoAI were positively correlated with Hcy in the CAD patients (P < .05). Although the trends for HHcy to decrease the lipid profiles were not different between the CAD and controls (Pinteraction > 0.05), CAD with HHcy had lower HDL-C and ApoAI levels than those of subjects with normal Hcy; controls with HHcy had lower TC, LDL-C, and ApoB levels than those of subjects with normal Hcy (P < .05). There were different HHcy trends affecting the ratios of TC/HDL-C and LDL/HDL-C between the CAD patients and controls (Pinteraction for TC/HDL-C = 0.025; Pinteraction for LDL/HDL-C = 0.033). CAD patients with HHcy had a higher ratio of TC/HDL-C (P = .022) and LDL/HDL-C (P = .045) than those of patients with normal Hcy, but in the controls, the subjects with HHcy exhibited a trend toward a decreased ratio of TC/HDL-C (P = .481) and LDL/HDL-C (P = .303). There were differential effects of HHcy on the lipid ratios between CAD and non-CAD patients. HHcy was related to higher ratios of TC/HDL-C and LDL/HDL-C in patients with CAD.

Abstract
Background Lipid metabolism disorders contribute to the risk factor of prostatic hyperplasia. Lipid ratios have also attracted a lot of attention. Yet, research about the correlation of lipid ratios with prostatic hyperplasia is limited. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the association of lipid ratios with the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Chinese male subjects. Methods Healthy men who underwent routine health check-ups from January 2017 to December 2019 were recruited. Twenty-four thousand nine hundred sixty-two individuals were finally enrolled in this research. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between lipid ratios and BPH in Chinese adults. Results After health examinations for more than 2 years, 18.46% of subjects were ascertained as incident BPH cases. Higher age, body mass index (BMI), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) ratio, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly associated with BPH risk, while total cholesterol (TC) was not significant. When quartiles of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were analyzed in multivariable model, higher TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were associated with a risk of BPH (odds ratio [OR] = 2.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.89, 2.36; P-trend < 0.001; and OR = 1.67; 95% CI: 1.50, 1.85; P-trend < 0.001, respectively). In addition, stratified analyses based on the general population exhibited that with increasing age (≥35 years) the relationship of TG/HDL-C ratio with BPH risk was dominantly positive (all P-trend < 0.001, P-interaction = 0.001), and significant associations were also found in blood pressure strata and FBG strata (all P-trend < 0.001), except men with BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 were slightly weakened (OR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.41, 2.85; P-trend = 0.04). Moreover, there were significant associations between quartiles of TC/HDL-C and the risk of BPH was observed mainly in age 55–64 years, BMI 18.5–23.9 Kg/m2, blood pressure strata, and FBG strata. However, the P-value for a linear trend among those with BMI ≥ 28 Kg/m2 in which participants at the highest quartile of TC/HDL-C had an OR of 1.45 (95% CI: 1.09, 1.93) was 0.594. Additionally, higher TG/HDL-C ratio (≥0.65) may be a risk factor for BPH in China adults of different age decades (≥35 years) with normal TG and HDL-C. Conclusions TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C were associated with BPH risk, TG/HDL-C was a powerful independent risk factor for BPH in Chinese adults, and higher TG/HDL-C ratio should be valued in male subjects with normal TG and HDL-C levels.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia has been associated with cancer risk, yet the relationship between lipid ratios and nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the value of lipid ratios, including total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) and triglyceride/HDL-C (TG/HDL-C) as predictors of NSCLC in a Chinese population. Adult patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC, without a previous history of cancer, concomitant disease associated with lipid metabolism disorders, or usage of lipid-lowering drugs, were enrolled from a single center. Controls without NSCLC, matched for age and sex, were enrolled from the same Center. Lipid profile including TC, TG, HDL-C were measured in all participants. TC/HDL-C and TG/HDL-C were calculated based on the levels of TC, TG, HDL-C. Seven hundred eighty-two NSCLC cases and 599 controls were enrolled. NSCLC patients had significantly higher TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C levels than those in the control. After controlling for confounding factors, TG/HDL-C (OR = 4.489, 95% CI: 2.463-6.035, P < .001) and TC/HDL-C (OR = 2.396, 95% CI: 2.086-2.752, P = .001) were independently associated with NSCLC risk. The incidence of NSCLC was increased with rising tertiles of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C. Moreover, patients with TNM II-IV stage NSCLC had higher TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C than those in TNM I and Tis stage. TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C are positively correlated with NSCLC risk and TG/HDL-C is more predictive than TC/HDL-C in predicting the risk of NSCLC. The highest AUC was that of TG/HDL (0.898), at a cutoff point of 0.62, with 83.6% sensitivity and 83.5% specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND White matter hyperintensities (WMH), identified on T2-weighted magnetic resonance images of the human brain as areas of enhanced brightness, are a major risk factor of stroke, dementia, and death. There are no large-scale studies testing associations between WMH and circulating metabolites. METHODS We studied up to 9290 individuals (50.7% female, average age 61 years) from 15 populations of 8 community-based cohorts. WMH volume was quantified from T2-weighted or fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images or as hypointensities on T1-weighted images. Circulating metabolomic measures were assessed with mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Associations between WMH and metabolomic measures were tested by fitting linear regression models in the pooled sample and in sex-stratified and statin treatment-stratified subsamples. Our basic models were adjusted for age, sex, age×sex, and technical covariates, and our fully adjusted models were also adjusted for statin treatment, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, smoking, body mass index, and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Population-specific results were meta-analyzed using the fixed-effect inverse variance-weighted method. Associations with false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted P values (PFDR)<0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS In the meta-analysis of results from the basic models, we identified 30 metabolomic measures associated with WMH (PFDR<0.05), 7 of which remained significant in the fully adjusted models. The most significant association was with higher level of hydroxyphenylpyruvate in men (PFDR.full.adj=1.40×10-7) and in both the pooled sample (PFDR.full.adj=1.66×10-4) and statin-untreated (PFDR.full.adj=1.65×10-6) subsample. In men, hydroxyphenylpyruvate explained 3% to 14% of variance in WMH. In men and the pooled sample, WMH were also associated with lower levels of lysophosphatidylcholines and hydroxysphingomyelins and a larger diameter of low-density lipoprotein particles, likely arising from higher triglyceride to total lipids and lower cholesteryl ester to total lipids ratios within these particles. In women, the only significant association was with higher level of glucuronate (PFDR=0.047). CONCLUSIONS Circulating metabolomic measures, including multiple lipid measures (eg, lysophosphatidylcholines, hydroxysphingomyelins, low-density lipoprotein size and composition) and nonlipid metabolites (eg, hydroxyphenylpyruvate, glucuronate), associate with WMH in a general population of middle-aged and older adults. Some metabolomic measures show marked sex specificities and explain a sizable proportion of WMH variance.

Abstract
Background: Hyperglycemia detected in early pregnancy is still inadequately studied as a risk factor for adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Methods: a retrospective study of a cohort of N = 193 women in singleton pregnancies with hyperglycemia diagnosed before the 20th gestational week (GW). Results: characteristics of the study group: GW at the diagnosis: 12.0 (9.0; 15.0), diabetes diagnosed in early pregnancy (eDiP): 21%, insulin-therapy required: 61.8%, gestational hypertension/preeclampsia: 7.7%, premature delivery: 9.2%, composite adverse neonatal outcome: 59.2%, high (LGA) birth weight/low (SGA) birth weight according to the WHO growth charts: 24.2%/9.2%, respectively. Women with eDiP have lower eGDR, a higher TAG/HDL ratio, and a higher atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) compared to women with gestational diabetes diagnosed in early pregnancy—eGDM (9.33 ± 1.56 vs. 7.92 ± 2.54, p = 0.007, 1.06 ± 0.78, vs. 1.25 ± 0.68, p = 0.020, and −0.06 ± 0.25 vs. 0.04 ± 0.23 p = 0.021, respectively). NonHDL/HDL cholesterol ratio > 2.6, and AIP > 0.24 total/HDL cholesterol ratio > 4.5 significantly predicted metabolic adverse neonatal outcome (hypoglycemia and/or hyperbilirubinemia)—OR (95% CI): 4.62 (1.35; 15.79), 3.60 (1.04; 12.48), 8.75 (1.02; 74.83), respectively. Conclusions: 1, Hyperglycemia diagnosed in early pregnancy coexists with a lipid profile suggestive of insulin resistance. 2, Lipid-related markers of cardiometabolic risk measured in early pregnancy can be useful tools in assessment of fetomaternal risk in high-risk populations. 3, Women with eDiP present a more severe insulin resistance phenotype than those with eGDM.

Abstract
Background Dyslipidemia contributes to the progression of arterial stiffness (AS). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of the different lipid parameters with arterial stiffness index (ASI) in a middle-aged population free of cardiovascular (CV) disease. Methods Among 71,326 volunteers from the UK Biobank population, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)], apolipoproteins A and B (Apo A and Apo B), and ASI were measured. Values for non-HDL, TC/HDL, TG/HDL, and LDL/HDL were calculated. AS was defined as an ASI > 10 m/s. Associations between lipid parameters and ASI were performed using multiple linear logistic regressions. The results reported from univariate models were the squared partial correlation coefficient, r 2, and from multivariate models, the adjusted coefficient of determination, R 2, to describe the contribution of ASI variability for each lipid parameter. Results We found that TG/HDL was mainly associated with ASI [β = 0.53 (0.01), r 2 = 3.66%, p < 0.001 and adjusted β = 0.21 (0.01), R 2 = 13.58%, p < 0.001] and AS [odds ratio (OR) = 1.86 (1.80-1.92), r 2 = 1.65%, p < 0.001 and adjusted OR = 1.15 (1.13-1.17), R 2 = 8.54%, p < 0.001] rather than the others. TG/HDL remained the only lipid parameter that showed added value in linear multivariate models. TG/HDL remained less associated with AS than age (r 2 = 5.55%, p < 0.001), mean blood pressure (BP; r 2 = 5.31%, p < 0.001), and gender (r 2 = 4.44%, p < 0.001), but more highly associated than body mass index (BMI; r 2 = 1.95%, p < 0.001), heart rate (HR; r 2 = 0.81%, p < 0.001), fasting glucose (r 2 = 0.18%, p < 0.001), tobacco (r 2 = 0.05%, p < 0.001), and glomerular filtration rate (GFR; r 2 = 0.01%, p < 0.001). Conclusions In primary CV prevention, lipids, especially through the TG/HDL ratio, could be more instructive in preventing the increase in AS than other modifiable factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and new-onset diabetes under different glycemic states and to compare the predictive value of TyG-related parameters, obesity indices, and lipid ratios for new-onset diabetes. METHODS Data were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), consisting of 6,258 participants aged ≥45 years. Participants were grouped according to their glycemic states. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline regression were used to explore the association between TyG index and diabetes. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to confirm the predictive value of the optimal marker. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare the predictive value. RESULTS TyG index was positively correlated with the risk of diabetes (hazard ratio (HR), 1.75; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.56-1.97), and the linear association existed (p < 0.001). The highest correlation with diabetes was visceral adiposity index (VAI) (HR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.44-2.90) in normal fasting glucose (NFG) group and TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI) (HR, 2.53; 95% CI, 1.97-3.26) in impaired fasting glucose (IFG) group. The largest area under curve (AUC) was observed in TyG-waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR) in the NFG group (AUC, 0.613; 95% CI, 0.527-0.700), and TyG-BMI had the highest AUC in the IFG group (AUC, 0.643; 95% CI, 0.601-0.685). CONCLUSION The association between TyG index and new-onset diabetes was positive and linear. TyG-WHtR was a clinically effective marker for identifying the risks of diabetes in the NFG group and TyG-BMI was an effective marker to predict diabetes in the IFG group.

BACKGROUND Lipids and lipid ratios are associated with complications of diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM), such as cardiovascular disease, but the relationship between blood glucose levels and lipid or lipid ratios is not fully understood in T2DM patients. This study assesses the association between blood glucose levels and lipid or lipid ratios in a cohort of T2DM patients. METHODS A total of 1,747 Chinese T2DM patients from the Ningxia province of China were included in this cross-sectional study. Lipid parameters, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and fasting blood glucose levels were measured quantitatively using standard methods. Fasting blood glucose was divided into three groups. A multiple mixed-effect linear regression model was conducted to identify a potential association between blood glucose and lipid parameters. RESULTS There was a positive association between blood glucose and TG levels (β=0.34, 95% CI: (0.20, 0.48), p<0.01); every 1 mmol/L increase in blood glucose levels resulted in a 0.34 mmol/L increase in TG. Blood glucose levels were also associated with high LDL (β=0.08, 95% CI: (0.02, 0.14), p<0.01), TG/HDL-C (β=0.31, 95% CI: (0.13, 0.49), p<0.01), and LDL-C/HDL-C (β=0.13, 95% CI: (0.06, 0.20), p<0.01) levels. After controlling for demographic variables, health-related behaviors, and physical health variables, a positive association between blood glucose levels and TG (β=0.31, 95% CI: (0.17, 0.45), p<0.01) and LDL-C (β=0.08, 95% CI: (0.02, 0.13), p<0.01) levels and an in increase in TG/HDL-C (β=0.28, 95% CI: (0.09, 0.46), p<0.01) and LDL-C/HDL-C (β=0.11, 95% CI: (0.04, 0.18), p<0.01) ratios was found. CONCLUSION A correlation between blood glucose levels and serum lipids or lipid ratios has been established in this study. Blood glucose levels were positively associated with TG and LDL-C levels and elevated TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios.

Abstract
Carotid and/or femoral atherosclerotic plaques (AP) assessment through imaging studies is an interesting strategy for improving individual cardiovascular risk (CVR) stratification and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and/or events prediction. There is no consensus on who would benefit from image screening aimed at determining AP presence, burden, and characteristics. AIMS (1) to identify, in asymptomatic and non-treated subjects, demographic factors, anthropometric characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs), individually or grouped (e.g., CVR equations, pro-atherogenic lipid ratios) associated with carotid and femoral AP presence, burden, geometry, and fibro-lipid content; (2) to identify cut-off values to be used when considering the variables as indicators of increased probability of AP presence, elevated atherosclerotic burden, and/or lipid content, in a selection scheme for subsequent image screening. METHODS CRFs exposure and clinical data were obtained (n = 581; n = 144 with AP; 47% females). Arterial (e.g., ultrasonography) and hemodynamic (central [cBP] and peripheral blood pressure; oscillometry/applanation tonometry) data were obtained. Carotid and femoral AP presence, burden (e.g., AP number, involved territories), geometric (area, width, height) and fibro-lipid content (semi-automatic, virtual histology analysis, grayscale analysis and color mapping) were assessed. Lipid profile was obtained. Lipid ratios (Total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol, LogTryglicerides(TG)/HDL-cholesterol) and eight 10-years [y.]/CVR scores were quantified (e.g., Framingham Risk Scores [FRS] for CVD). RESULTS Age, 10-y./CVR and cBP showed the highest levels of association with AP presence and burden. Individually, classical CRFs and lipid ratios showed almost no association with AP presence. 10-y./CVR levels, age and cBP enabled detecting AP with large surfaces (˃p75th). Lipid ratios showed the largest association with AP fibro-lipid content. Ultrasound evaluation could be considered in asymptomatic and non-treated subjects aiming at population screening of AP (e.g., ˃ 45 y.; 10-y./FRS-CVD ˃ 5-8%); identifying subjects with high atherosclerotic burden (e.g., ˃50 y., 10-y./FRS-CVD ˃ 13-15%) and/or with plaques with high lipid content (e.g., LogTG/HDL ˃ 0.135).

Abstract
The composition-function relationship of HDL particles and its effects on the mechanisms driving coronary heart disease (CHD) is poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that the functionality of HDL particles is significantly influenced by their lipid composition. Using a novel 3D-separation method, we isolated five different-sized HDL subpopulations from CHD patients who had low preβ-1 functionality (low-F) (ABCA1-dependent cholesterol-efflux normalized for preβ-1 concentration) and controls who had either low-F or high preβ-1 functionality (high-F). Molecular numbers of apoA-I, apoA-II, and eight major lipid classes were determined in each subpopulation by LC-MS. The average number of lipid molecules decreased from 422 in the large spherical α-1 particles to 57 in the small discoid preβ-1 particles. With decreasing particle size, the relative concentration of free cholesterol (FC) decreased in α-mobility but not in preβ-1 particles. Preβ-1 particles contained more lipids than predicted; 30% of which were neutral lipids (cholesteryl ester and triglyceride), indicating that these particles were mainly remodeled from larger particles not newly synthesized. There were significant correlations between HDL-particle functionality and the concentrations of several lipids. Unexpectedly, the phospholipid:FC ratio was significantly correlated with large-HDL-particle functionality but not with preβ-1 functionality. There was significant positive correlation between particle functionality and total lipids in high-F controls, indicating that the lipid-binding capacity of apoA-I plays a major role in the cholesterol efflux capacity of HDL particles. Functionality and lipid composition of HDL particles are significantly correlated and probably both are influenced by the lipid-binding capacity of apoA-I.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are associated with obesity, which triggers the release of inflammatory substances. Myeloperoxidase (MPO), a peroxidase enzyme, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), an acute-phase protein, are known to be released in patients with inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS In this study, we investigated the correlation between MPO and AGP levels in pre/diabetic and MetS patients by conducting a cross-sectional study at The University of Jordan Hospital (UoJH) at the diabetes and endocrinology outpatient clinics. A total of 237 patients were recruited and assessed for eligibility. Of these, 149 patients were excluded, and 88 patients were assigned as: 29 patients in a healthy lean normoglycemic control group; 29 patients in a nondiabetic MetS group; and 30 patients in a prediabetic/newly diagnosed T2DM MetS group. RESULTS MPO levels were only significantly higher in the nondiabetic MetS group compared with the control group (p = 0.026). AGP levels were significantly higher in both nondiabetic MetS and MetS-prediabetic/T2DM groups versus control (p = 0.007 and p = 0.015, respectively). Both biomarkers lacked inter-MetS-group discrepancy. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate an association between MPO and AGP with obesity and hyperglycemia, alongside their correlation with several adiposity, hematology and atherogenicity indices. Our findings reinforce the use of MPO and AGP as potentially putative and surrogate predictive/prognostic tools for MetS and its related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite current interest in the unfavourable impact of non-traditional lipid profiles on cardiovascular disease, information regarding its relations to reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in H-type hypertension population has not been systemically elucidated. METHODS Analyses were based upon a cross-sectional study of 3259 participants with H-type hypertension who underwent assessment of biochemical, anthropometric and blood pressure values. Reduced GFR was considered if meeting estimated GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS A stepwise multivariate regression analysis indicated that non-traditional lipid parameters remained as independent determinants of estimated GFR (all p < .001). In multivariable models, we observed a 50%, 51%, 31%, and 24% higher risk for decreased GFR with each SD increment in TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios and non-HDL-C levels, respectively. The highest quartile of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios carried reduced GFR odds (confidence intervals) of 5.50 (2.50 to 12.09), 6.63 (2.58 to 17.05) and 2.22 (1.15 to 4.29), respectively. CONCLUSIONS The relative independent contribution of non-traditional lipid profiles, as indexed by TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios and non-HDL-C, towards reduced GFR putting research evidence at the very heart of lipoprotein-mediated renal injury set a vital example for applying a clinical and public health recommendation for reducing the burden of chronic kidney disease. KEY MESSAGES Non-traditional lipid profiles has been linked with the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, but none of the studies that address the effect of non-traditional lipid profiles on reduced GFR risk in H-type hypertension population has been specifically established. A greater emphasis of this study resided in the intrinsic value of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios and non-HDL-C that integrate atherogenic and anti-atherogenic lipid molecules to predict the risk of reduced GFR among H-type hypertension population and provide insight into the pathophysiology of subsequent cardio-cerebrovascular outcomes. In a large Chinese H-type hypertension adults, the relative independent contribution of non-traditional lipid profiles, as indexed by TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios and non-HDL-C, towards reduced GFR putting research evidence at the very heart of lipoprotein-mediated renal injury set a vital example for applying a clinical and public health recommendation for reducing the burden of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A controversy exists regarding the association between subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and dyslipidemia. Moreover, studies on lipid ratios and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) in SH are rare, particularly in the Indian scenario. AIM This study aimed to investigate abnormalities in conventional lipid profile, lipid ratios, and AIP in SH and attempted to correlate thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and AIP in SH. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective analysis of patient records of SH subjects and euthyroid subjects, age, free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, TSH, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, lipid ratios, and AIP were compared between the two groups. The correlation of TSH and AIP in SH was studied. Spearman's correlation, Mann-Whitney U-test and logistic regression analysis were performed. RESULTS Triglyceride, triglyceride/HDL-C, and AIP were significantly higher in SH as compared to euthyroid group, but there was no correlation between TSH and AIP in SH. AIP emerged as the significant single factor associated with SH in multiple logistic regressions. CONCLUSION The positive association of dyslipidemia and SH indicates a need for regular screening of these patients to enable early diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia. Even in patients who have a normal conventional lipid profile, lipid ratios, and AIP have to be calculated for better assessment of atherogenic risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we evaluate the association between triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio and total cholesterol (TC) to HDL (TC/HDL) ratio and the risks of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in an Iranian high-risk population. METHODS We analysed 7-year follow-up data (n = 1771) in non-diabetic first-degree relatives of consecutive patients with T2D 30-70 years old. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of T2D based on repeated oral glucose tolerance tests. We used Cox proportional hazard models to estimate hazard ratio for incident T2D across tertiles of TG/HDL and TC/HDL ratios and plotted a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to assess discrimination. RESULTS The highest tertile of TG/HDL and TC/HDL ratios compared with the lowest tertile was not associated with T2D in age- and gender-adjusted models (HR 0.99, 95% CI: 0.88, 1.11 for TG/HDL ratio and 1.10, 95% CI: 0.97, 1.23 for TC/HDL ratio). Further adjustment for waist circumference or body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol did not appreciably alter the hazard ratio compared with the age- and gender-adjusted model. The area under the ROC curve for TG/HDL ratio was 57.7% (95% CI: 54.0, 61.5) and for TC/HDL ratio was 55.1% (95% CI: 51.2, 59.0). CONCLUSIONS TG/HDL and TC/HDL ratios were not robust predictors of T2D in high-risk individuals in Iran. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
AIM To examine the association of serum lipids, lipid ratios with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in a Chinese population. METHODS Data were drawn from a cross-sectional survey in China. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m(2) or albuminuria-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) > 30 mg/g. Multivariable logistic regressions and multivariate regression models were used. Serum lipids and lipid ratios included total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), TG/HDL-C ratio, TC/HDL-C ratio and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio. RESULTS In men, only logarithm-transformed (log) TG was associated with CKD. The odds ratio (every SD increment) was 1.39 (95% CI 1.03-1.87, P = 0.03). In women, none of the serum lipids and lipid ratios was associated with CKD. Using multivariate regression models, it was shown that log TG and log TG/HDL-C were negatively correlated with eGFR (P < 0.05) in men and LDL-C and log LDL-C/HDL-C ratio were correlated with ACR in men. In female subjects, serum TC, log TG, log TG/HDL-C and log TC/HDL-C were negatively correlated with eGFR (P < 0.05). All of serum lipid profiles and lipid related ratio were not correlated with ACR in women. CONCLUSION Serum TG is the only suitable predictor for CKD in men. However, in women, none of serum lipids and lipid ratio can be used as a predictor for CKD. Log TG and log TG/HDL-C are negatively correlated with eGFR in both genders.
