Molecule Clustering Dynamics in the Molecular Doping Process of Si(111) with Diethyl-propyl-phosphonate

The molecular doping (MD) process is based on the deposition of dopant-containing molecules over the surface of a semiconductor substrate, followed by the thermal diffusion step. Previous studies suggest that, during the deposition, the molecules nucleate clusters, and at prolonged deposition times, they grow into self-assembled layers on the sample to be doped. Little is known about the influence of nucleation kinetics on the final properties of these layers and how they change when we modify the solution properties. In this work, we examine the nucleation rate and the molecular surface coverage kinetics of diethyl-propyl phosphonate on silicon at different solution concentrations and how these conditions influence the final electrical properties of the doped samples. We present a high-resolution morphological characterization of the as-deposited molecules together with the electrical results of the final doped samples. The experimental results show a non-obvious behavior, explained through understanding of the competition between the molecules' physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms. As a consequence, due to the deeper knowledge of the deposition phase, a finer tuning of the conductive properties of MD-doped samples is achieved.

Low-Temperature Synthesis of Cu-Doped Anatase TiO2 Nanostructures via Liquid Phase Deposition Method for Enhanced Photocatalysis

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) photocatalysis can harness the energy from sunlight, providing a solution to many green- and energy-related problems. In this study, we aimed to produce Cu doped TiO₂ (Cu-TiO₂) structures at a low temperature (~70 °C) under atmospheric pressure based on liquid phase deposition. The products prepared with Cu nitrate exhibited anatase-phase TiO₂ with the presence of Cu, and the particles showed a waxberry-like structure. Changing the Cu nitrate concentration allowed control of the atomic concentration; we confirmed ~1.3 atm.% of Cu ions in the product when we applied 10 mM in the precursor solution. By doping Cu, the light absorption edge shifted to 440 nm (~2.9 eV), and we proved the photocatalytic reaction through action spectral measurement. We observed the decomposition of acetaldehyde into CO₂ on Cu-TiO₂ photocatalysts, which produced optimized improvements in photocatalytic activity at Cu dopant levels between 0.2 and 0.4 atm.%. This study demonstrates that the liquid phase deposition technique can be used for doping metallic ions into TiO₂, which shows promise for preparing novel and unique nanomaterials as visible light photocatalysts.

Synthesis of Ti6Al4V/SrFHA Composites by Microwave-Assisted Liquid Phase Deposition and Calcination

The feasibility of synthesis of Ti6Al4V/SrFHA (Ca_9.37Sr_0.63(PO₄)₆F₂) composites via coating strontium and fluorine co-doped HA to Ti6Al4V substrate by microwave-assisted liquid phase deposition and calcination was evaluated, with a focus on the effect of the deposition temperature from 30 °C to 70 °C. The outcomes demonstrate that strontium and fluorine can be successfully doped into HA to form a SrFHA coating with modified micromorphology which is deposited on the alloy. When the deposition temperature was 50 °C, the coating with the largest uniform continuous SrFHA coverage was obtained. After calcination, the adhesion strength and Vickers microhardness of the Ti6Al4V/SrFHA composite increased from 0.68 MPa and 323 HV to 2.41 MPa and 329 HV, respectively, with a decrease in the water contact angle from 10.88° to 7.24°, exhibiting enhancement of both mechanical properties and wettability. Moreover, the composite obtained at the deposition temperature of 50 °C exhibited good bioactivity based on the simulate body fluid (SBF) test. On account of the above features primarily as a result of the combined effect of the co-doping of strontium and fluorine, high crystallinity of SrFHA, large surface roughness, and formation of the titanium oxide transition layer, the Ti6Al4V/SrFHA composite shows great potential in dental implantology.

Study of the Molecule Adsorption Process during the Molecular Doping

Molecular Doping (MD) involves the deposition of molecules, containing the dopant atoms and dissolved in liquid solutions, over the surface of a semiconductor before the drive-in step. The control on the characteristics of the final doped samples resides on the in-depth study of the molecule behaviour once deposited. It is already known that the molecules form a self-assembled monolayer over the surface of the sample, but little is known about the role and behaviour of possible multiple layers that could be deposited on it after extended deposition times. In this work, we investigate the molecular surface coverage over time of diethyl-propyl phosphonate on silicon, by employing high-resolution morphological and electrical characterization, and examine the effects of the post-deposition surface treatments on it. We present these data together with density functional theory simulations of the molecules–substrate system and electrical measurements of the doped samples. The results allow us to recognise a difference in the bonding types involved in the formation of the molecular layers and how these influence the final doping profile of the samples. This will improve the control on the electrical properties of MD-based devices, allowing for a finer tuning of their performance.

Folate encapsulation in PEG-diamine grafted mesoporous Fe3O4 nanoparticles for hyperthermia and in vitro assessment

Effective and targeted delivery of the antitumour drugs towards the specific cancer spot is the major motive of drug delivery. In this direction, suitably functionalised magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilised as a theranostic agent for imaging, hyperthermia and drug delivery applications. Herein, the authors reported the preparation of multifunctional polyethyleneglycol-diamine functionalised mesoporous superparamagnetic iron oxide NPs (SPION) prepared by a facile solvothermal method for biomedical applications. To endow targeting ability towards tumour site, folic acid (FA) is attached to the amine groups which are present on the NPs surface by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide chemistry. FA attached SPION shows good colloidal stability and possesses high drug-loading efficiency of ∼ 96% owing to its mesoporous nature and the electrostatic attachment of daunosamine (NH3+) group of doxorubicin (DOX) towards the negative surface charge of carboxyl and hydroxyl group. The NPs possess superior magnetic properties in result endowed with high hyperthermic ability under alternating magnetic field reaching the hyperthermic temperature of 43°C within 223 s at NP's concentration of 1 mg/ml. The functionalised NPs possess non-appreciable toxicity in breast cancer cells (MCF-7) which is triggered under DOX-loaded SPION.

[Preparation of zirconia nanoparticles deposited cotton fibers and their application in the rapid enrichment of phosphopeptides]

A kind of cotton-based fibrous adsorbent, zirconia nanoparticles coated cotton fiber (ZrO₂-CF), was successfully prepared by liquid-phase deposition of zirconia nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fiber. And the ZrO₂-CF fibrous adsorbent was packed in pipet tips for the enrichment of phosphopeptide by pipetting up and down within 2 min, which was simple and fast. Nine phosphopeptides were identified from the digestion of β-casein after ZrO₂-CF extraction. ZrO₂-CF exhibited good selectivity in the enrichment of phosphopeptides from the digestion mixture of β-casein and BSA (molar ratio is 1:100) in which four phosphopeptides were identified. And it also showed excellent extraction efficiency in actual biological samples such as non-fat milk and human serum in which four and nine phosphopeptides were identified, respectively.

Facile one‐pot hydrothermal synthesis of stable and biocompatible fluorescent carbon dots from lemon grass herb

Luminescent carbon‐based nanomaterials hold great promise due to their stable photo‐physical behaviour, biocompatibility and lower toxicity. This work involves economic and facile one‐pot green synthesis of water‐soluble nanostructures from lemon grass (LGNS) [Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf ] as carbon source. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of LGNS with lattice spacing of 0.23 nm matching low‐dimensional graphitic structures. The strong absorption exhibited at 278 nm could be attributed to л‐states of sp2 /sp3 hybridisation in carbon nanostructures. Fluorescence spectroscopy of LGNS exhibited strong excitation‐dependent emission properties over a broad range of wavelengths from 300 to 600 nm. Quantitatively, these LGNS were estimated to have quantum yield of 23.3%. Biomass derived LGNS could be potentially exploited for wide variety of applications like bioimaging, up‐conversion, drug delivery and optoelectronic devices. To this extent, synthesised LGNS were used to image yeast cells via multicolour/multi‐excitation fluorescence imaging.

Nickel-Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxide Coating on the Surface of Conductive Substrates by Liquid Phase Deposition

The direct synthesis of the adhered Ni-Al LDH thin film onto the surface of electrically conductive substrates by the liquid phase deposition (LPD) reaction is carried out for the development of the positive electrode. The complexation and solution equilibria of the dissolved species in the LPD reaction have been clarified by a theoretical approach, and the LPD reaction conditions for the Ni-Al LDH depositions are shown to be optimized by controlling the fluoride ion concentration and the pH of the LPD reaction solutions. The yields of metal oxides and hydroxides by the LPD method are very sensitive to the supersaturation state of the hydroxide in the reaction solution. The surfaces of conductive substrates are completely covered by the minute mesh-like Ni-Al LDH thin film; furthermore, there is no gap between the surfaces of conductive substrates and the deposited Ni-Al LDH thin film. The active material layer thickness was able to be controlled within the range from 100 nm to 1 μm by the LPD reaction time. The high-crystallinity and the arbitrary-thickness thin films on the conductive substrate surface will be beneficial for the interface control of charge transfer reaction fields and the internal resistance reduction of various secondary batteries.

Liquid phase deposition of a space-durable, antistatic SnO₂ coating on Kapton

Polyimides are widely used in thermal blankets covering the external surfaces of spacecrafts due to their space durability and their thermo-optical properties. However, they are susceptible to atomic oxygen (AO) erosion, the main hazard of low Earth orbit (LEO), and to electrical charging. This work demonstrates that liquid phase deposition (LPD) of 100 nm of tin oxide creates a protective coating on Kapton polyimide that has good adherence and is effective in preventing AO-induced surface erosion and in reducing electrical charging. The as-deposited tin oxide induces no significant changes in the original thermo-optical properties of the polymer and is effective in preventing electrostatic discharge (ESD). The durability of the oxide coating under AO attack was studied using oxygen RF plasma. The AO exposure did not result in any significant changes in surface morphology, thermo-optical, mechanical, and electrical properties of the tin oxide-coated Kapton. The erosion yield of tin oxide-coated Kapton was negligible after exposure to 6.4 × 10(20) O atoms·cm(-2) of LEO equivalent AO fluence, indicating a complete protection of Kapton by the LPD deposited coating. Moreover, the tin oxide coating is flexible enough so that its electrical conductivity stays within the desired range of antistatic materials despite mechanical manipulations. The advantages of liquid phase deposited oxides in terms of their not being line of site limited are well established. We now extend these advantages to coatings that reduce electrostatic discharge while still providing a high level of protection from AO erosion.
