Balancing Group I Monatomic Ion-Polar Compound Interactions for Condensed Phase Simulation in the Polarizable Drude Force Field

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are a commonly used method for investigating molecular behavior at the atomic level. Achieving reliable MD simulation results necessitates the use of an accurate force field. In the present work, we present a protocol to enhance the quality of group 1 monatomic ions (specifically Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) with respect to their interactions with common polar model compounds in biomolecules in condensed phases in the context of the Drude polarizable force field. Instead of adjusting preexisting individual parameters for ions, model compounds, and water, we employ atom-pair specific Lennard-Jones (LJ) (known as NBFIX in CHARMM) and through-space Thole dipole screening (NBTHOLE) terms to fine-tune the balance of ion-model compound, ion-water, and model compound-water interactions. This involved establishing a protocol for the optimization of NBFIX and NBTHOLE parameters targeting the difference between molecular mechanical (MM) and quantum mechanical (QM) potential energy scans (PES). It is shown that targeting PES involving complexes that include multiple model compounds and/or ions as trimers and tetramers yields parameters that produce condensed phase properties in agreement with experimental data. Validation of this protocol involved the reproduction of experimental thermodynamic benchmarks, including solvation free energies of ions in methanol and N-methylacetamide, osmotic pressures, ionic conductivities, and diffusion coefficients within the condensed phase. These results show the importance of including more complex ion-model compound complexes beyond dimers in the QM target data to account for many-body effects during parameter fitting. The presented parameters represent a significant refinement of the Drude polarizable force field, which will lead to improved accuracy for modeling ion-biomolecular interactions.

Ultrafast many-body bright-dark exciton transition in anatase TiO2

The momentum-forbidden dark excitons can have a pivotal role in quantum information processing, Bose-Einstein condensation, and light-energy harvesting. Anatase TiO2 with an indirect band gap is a prototypical platform to study bright to momentum-forbidden dark exciton transition. Here, we examine, by GW plus the real-time Bethe-Salpeter equation combined with the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (GW + rtBSE-NAMD), the many-body transition that occurs within 100 fs from the optically excited bright to the strongly bound momentum-forbidden dark excitons in anatase TiO2. Comparing with the single-particle picture in which the exciton transition is considered to occur through electron-phonon scattering, within the GW + rtBSE-NAMD framework, the many-body electron-hole Coulomb interaction activates additional exciton relaxation channels to notably accelerate the exciton transition in competition with other radiative and nonradiative processes. The existence of dark excitons and ultrafast bright-dark exciton transitions sheds insights into applications of anatase TiO2 in optoelectronic devices and light-energy harvesting as well as the formation process of dark excitons in semiconductors.

Superradiant emission in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas

We use terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to study gallium arsenide two-dimensional electron gas samples in external magnetic field. We measure cyclotron decay as a function of temperature from 0.4 to10Kand a quantum confinement dependence of the cyclotron decay time belowT0=1.2K. In the wider quantum well, we observe a dramatic enhancement in the decay time due to the reduction in dephasing and the concomitant enhancement of superradiant decay in these systems. We show that the dephasing time in 2DEG's depends on both the scatteringrateand also on the distribution of scattering angles.

Disentangling Many-Body Effects in the Coherent Optical Response of 2D Semiconductors

In single-layer (1L) transition metal dichalcogenides, the reduced Coulomb screening results in strongly bound excitons which dominate the linear and the nonlinear optical response. Despite the large number of studies, a clear understanding on how many-body and Coulomb correlation effects affect the excitonic resonances on a femtosecond time scale is still lacking. Here, we use ultrashort laser pulses to measure the transient optical response of 1L-WS₂. In order to disentangle many-body effects, we perform exciton line-shape analysis, and we study its temporal dynamics as a function of the excitation photon energy and fluence. We find that resonant photoexcitation produces a blue shift of the A exciton, while for above-resonance photoexcitation the transient response at the optical bandgap is largely determined by a reduction of the exciton oscillator strength. Microscopic calculations based on excitonic Heisenberg equations of motion quantitatively reproduce the nonlinear absorption of the material and its dependence on excitation conditions.

Nanoconfinement-Enforced Ion Correlation and Nanofluidic Ion Machinery

Machines operating at the atomic level are of fundamental interests for information manipulation and communication. However, preparation of thermodynamically stable states and regulation of transitions between them at a low energy cost are challenging. We report that, by enforcing nanoconfinement and surface gating, one can control the configurations and dynamics of ions for computational tasks. The layered structures of water confined in nanochannels render the spatial and temporal correlation between ions, offering a number of distinct states with paired configurations. Free energy barriers for transitions between them are on the order of k_BT, allowing modulation through external fields or surface charges at a low energy cost. Ionic switches, rectifiers, and logical gates are constructed following the physical rules elucidated at the molecular level, opening an avenue toward artificial nanofluidic functionalities such as efficient ionic machinery by configuring the ionic pairs and controlled mass/charge transport by tuning the strength of correlation.

Correlation effects and many-body interactions in water clusters

Background: The quantum-chemical description of the interactions in water clusters is an essential basis for deriving accurate and physically sound models of the interaction potential for water to be used in molecular simulations. In particular, the role of many-body interactions beyond the two-body interactions, which are often not explicitly taken into account by empirical force fields, can be accurately described by quantum chemistry methods on an adequate level, e.g., random-phase approximation electron correlation methods. The relative magnitudes of the different interaction energy contributions obtained by accurate ab initio calculations can therefore provide useful insights that can be exploited to develop enhanced force field methods. Results: In line with earlier theoretical studies of the interactions in water clusters, it has been found that the main contribution to the many-body interactions in clusters with a size of up to N = 13 molecules are higher-order polarisation interaction terms. Compared to this, many-body dispersion interactions are practically negligible for all studied sytems. The two-body dispersion interaction, however, plays a significant role in the formation of the structures of the water clusters and their stability, since it leads to a distinct compression of the cluster sizes compared to the structures optimized on an uncorrelated level. Overall, the many-body interactions amount to about 13% of the total interaction energy, irrespective of the cluster size. The electron correlation contribution to these, however, amounts to only about 30% to the total many-body interactions for the largest clusters studied and is repulsive for all structures considered in this work. Conclusion: While this shows that three- and higher-body interactions can not be neglected in the description of water complexes, the electron correlation contributions to these are much smaller in comparison to the two-body electron correlation effects. Efficient quantum chemistry approaches for describing intermolecular interactions between water molecules may therefore describe higher-body interactions on an uncorrelated Hartree-Fock level without a serious loss in accuracy.

Hofstadter Butterfly and Many-Body Effects in Epitaxial Graphene Superlattice

Graphene placed on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has received a wide range of interest due to the improved electrical performance and rich physics from the interface, especially the emergence of superlattice Dirac points as well as Hofstadter butterfly in high magnetic field. Instead of transferring graphene onto h-BN, epitaxial growth of graphene directly on a single-crystal h-BN provides an alternative and promising way to study these interesting superlattice effects due to their precise lattice alignment. Here we report an electrical transport study on epitaxial graphene superlattice on h-BN with a period of ∼15.6 nm. The epitaxial graphene superlattice is clean, intrinsic, and of high quality with a carrier mobility of ∼27 000 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), which enables the observation of Hofstadter butterfly features originated from the superlattice at a magnetic field as low as 6.4 T. A metal-insulator transition and magnetic field dependent Fermi velocity were also observed, suggesting prominent electron-electron interaction-induced many-body effects.

Efficient Excitonic Photoluminescence in Direct and Indirect Band Gap Monolayer MoS2

We discuss the photoluminescence (PL) of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides on the basis of experiments and a microscopic theory. The latter connects ab initio calculations of the single-particle states and Coulomb matrix elements with a many-body description of optical emission spectra. For monolayer MoS2, we study the PL efficiency at the excitonic A and B transitions in terms of carrier populations in the band structure and provide a quantitative comparison to an (In)GaAs quantum well-structure. Suppression and enhancement of PL under biaxial strain is quantified in terms of changes in the local extrema of the conduction and valence bands. The large exciton binding energy in MoS2 enables two distinctly different excitation methods: above-band gap excitation and quasi-resonant excitation of excitonic resonances below the single-particle band gap. The latter case creates a nonequilibrium distribution of carriers predominantly in the K-valleys, which leads to strong emission from the A-exciton transition and a visible B-peak even if the band gap is indirect. For above-band gap excitation, we predict a strongly reduced emission intensity at comparable carrier densities and the absence of B-exciton emission. The results agree well with PL measurements performed on monolayer MoS2 at excitation wavelengths of 405 nm (above) and 532 nm (below the band gap).

When "small" terms matter: Coupled interference features in the transport properties of cross-conjugated molecules

Quantum interference effects offer opportunities to tune the electronic and thermoelectric response of a quantum-scale device over orders of magnitude. Here we focus on single-molecule devices, in which interference features may be strongly affected by both chemical and electronic modifications to the system. Although not always desirable, such a susceptibility offers insight into the importance of "small" terms, such as through-space coupling and many-body charge-charge correlations. Here we investigate the effect of these small terms using different Hamiltonian models with Hückel, gDFTB and many-body theory to calculate the transport through several single-molecule junctions, finding that terms that are generally thought to only slightly perturb the transport instead produce significant qualitative changes in the transport properties. In particular, we show that coupling of multiple interference features in cross-conjugated molecules by through-space coupling will lead to splitting of the features, as can correlation effects. The degeneracy of multiple interference features in cross-conjugated molecules appears to be significantly more sensitive to perturbations than those observed in equivalent cyclic systems and this needs to be considered if such supernodes are required for molecular thermoelectric devices.

Density of States Information from Low Temperature Specific Heat Measurements

The calculation of one-electron density of state values from the coefficient γ of the term of the low temperature specific heat linear in temperature is complicated by many-body effects. In particular, the electron-phonon interaction may enhance the measured γ as much as twofold. The enhancement factor can be evaluated in the case of superconducting metals and alloys. In the presence of magnetic moments, additional complications arise. A magnetic contribution to the measured γ was identified in the case of dilute alloys and also of concentrated alloys where parasitic antiferromagnetism is superimposed on an over-all ferromagnetic order. No method has as yet been devised to evaluate this magnetic part of γ. The separation of the temperature-linear term of the specific heat may itself be complicated by the appearance of a specific heat anomaly due to magnetic clusters in superparamagnetic or weakly ferromagnetic alloys.
