Comedone Extractor with Multiple Variable Sized Holes for Mass Comedone Extraction

Conventional comedone extractor has only one or two holes of fixed or variable sizes. This conventional extractor is not suitable for mass comedone extraction and that too of variable sizes. We tried to made an attempt to overcome this problem.

Safety and Efficacy of VP-102 (Cantharidin, 0.7% w/v) in Molluscum Contagiosum by Body Region: Post hoc Pooled Analyses from Two Phase III Randomized Trials

BACKGROUND

VP-102 is drug-device combination product containing cantharidin (0.7% w/v) and has undergone Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of molluscum contagiosum (molluscum). Efficacy and safety may differ by body region due to variable skin anatomy.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated the pooled safety and efficacy of VP-102 by affected body region.

METHODS

Individuals at least two years of age with molluscum were randomized to topical VP-102 or vehicle once every 21 days until clear (maximum of four applications). Participants were assigned to body region groups where lesions were present at baseline. Body region lesion counts were recorded at each visit. Efficacy was measured by the percentage of participants with complete clearance of lesions by region. Pre-specified adverse events (AEs) were analyzed for those treated in the region on that visit.

RESULTS

Participants had a mean of two regions affected at baseline. Complete clearance was significantly higher in the VP-102-treated group than with vehicle application in all regions at the last visit (P<0.01 for each region). The incidence of pre-specified AEs was consistent across regions. However, these analyses were post hoc, and individual lesions were not tracked for efficacy.

CONCLUSION

VP-102 treatment shows consistent safety and efficacy across molluscum body regions.

Analysis of over-the-counter products marketed to treat molluscum contagiosum

Many over-the-counter (OTC) products are marketed to treat molluscum contagiosum, a common childhood viral infection with an estimated point prevalence of 5%-11%. As optimal treatment has not been defined, a comprehensive internet search was performed to identify OTC products marketed for treating molluscum and to collect information on packaging, ingredients, application instructions, and dosing. Nine OTC products were identified and varied widely in cost, packaging size, and ingredients; six of the nine products contained Thuja occidentalis. Overall, the majority of OTC package labels do not include sufficient information about their plant-based ingredients or appropriate dosing.

Entodermoscopy Update: A Contemporary Review on Dermoscopy of Cutaneous Infections and Infestations

Infectious cutaneous diseases are very common, especially in certain geographic and tropical regions. Sometimes they may simulate other dermatoses, ordering verification of diagnosis with particular investigations. Dermoscopy is among one of the most important tools readily available in the outpatient setting for the dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis. In this up-to date review, literature concerning the various dermoscopic features of parasitic, viral, dermatophytic and bacterial cutaneous infections is composed. In addition artefacts as well as practical issues in dermoscopy usage are discussed; with the aim to empower dermatologists to promptly and non-invasively diagnose and manage cutaneous infections and infestations.

Intralesional immunotherapy for molluscum contagiosum: A review

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common cutaneous viral infection with no standard treatment. The virus responsible for MC is thought to be cleared by cell mediated immunity (CMI). Intralesional immunotherapy that stimulates CMI has been shown to be an effective treatment for other cutaneous viruses. In this review, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of intralesional immunotherapy in the treatment of MC. Articles met inclusion criteria if they examined the effects of intralesional immunotherapy as a treatment for MC, with a clear outcome and reproducible methodology. 228 studies were screened and 10 studies met criteria for inclusion. Intralesional immunotherapies investigated included candida, combined measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, tuberculin purified protein derivative, vitamin D3, interferon α, and Streptococcal substrain OK-432. Studies demonstrated clearance of MC lesions following intralesional immunotherapy, with complete response rates between 36% and 100%. No serious adverse effects were noted. Intralesional immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment option for MC in pediatric and adult patients.

Beetle juice: a guide for the use of cantharidin in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is an increasingly common cutaneous viral infection that primarily affects the pediatric population. MC lesions are benign, and most cases resolve within 6-9 months. Nonetheless, many patients and their parents seek active treatment of MC because of local pain, pruritus, embarrassment due to the lesions, or desire to reduce transmission to siblings. Individuals with atopic dermatitis are predisposed to severe and protracted MC, and immunocompromised patients may never clear the infection without treatment. Despite the availability of various therapies, no clear best treatment for MC has emerged. Cantharidin is a commonly used and effective therapy for MC that is generally well tolerated and has high rates of parental satisfaction. In this review, current literature regarding MC is summarized and particular focus is placed on the use of cantharidin for treating MC, including a review of the literature and detailed instructions for its use.

Molluscum BOTE sign: a predictor of imminent resolution

Molluscum contagiosum is a common self-limited viral skin infection. The course of the infection often includes tender, crusted, erythematous lesions that prompt suspicion for bacterial infection. However, these signs of inflammation represent a host response that often precedes resolution of the viral disease, rather than bacterial superinfection, and do not require additional antibacterial treatment. We present a case report and retrospective review of 7 additional cases to characterize the clinical presentation of inflamed molluscum, assess the utilization of medical resources, and consider the psychosocial burden associated with mistaken diagnoses of bacterial infection. We propose the acronym "BOTE"* sign (for beginning of the end) to help underscore the significance of inflammation as an expected variant in the evolution of molluscum immunity.
