Synthesis of a Novel Bifunctional Epoxy Double-Decker Silsesquioxane: Improvement of the Thermal Stability and Dielectric Properties of Polybenzoxazine

In this study a new type of bifunctional epoxy compound (DDSQ-EP) based on double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) was synthesized by process of alkaline hydrolysis condensation of phenyltrimethoxysilane and corner capping reaction with dichloromethylvinylsilane, followed by epoxidation reaction of vinyl groups. The resultant structures were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, respectively. The DDSQ-EP was incorporated into polybenzoxazine to obtain the PBZ/DDSQ-EP nanocomposites. The uniform dispersion of DDSQ-EP in the nanocomposites was verified by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The reactions occurred during the curing of the composites and were investigated using infrared spectroscopy of segmented cures. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that the storage modulus, glass transition temperature and thermal stability of PBZ/DDSQ-EP were increased in comparison with pure benzoxazine resins. Assessment of dielectric properties demonstrated that the dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of polybenzoxazine decreased slightly because of the addition of DDSQ-EP.

Benzoxazine Monomers and Polymers Based on 3,3'-Dichloro-4,4'-Diaminodiphenylmethane: Synthesis and Characterization

To reveal the effect of chlorine substituents in the ring of aromatic amine on the synthesis process of benzoxazine monomer and on its polymerization ability, as well as to develop a fire-resistant material, a previously unreported benzoxazine monomer based on 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane was obtained in toluene and mixture toluene/isopropanol. The resulting benzoxazine monomers were thermally cured for 2 h at 180 °C, 4 h at 200 °C, 2 h at 220 °C. A comparison between the rheological, thermal and fire-resistant properties of the benzoxazines based on 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and, for reference, 4,4'-diaminodimethylmethane was made. The effect of the reaction medium on the structure of the oligomeric fraction and the overall yield of the main product were studied and the toluene/ethanol mixture was found to provide the best conditions; however, in contrast to most known diamine-based benzoxazines, synthesis in the pure toluene is also possible. The synthesized monomers can be used as thermo- and fire-resistant binders for polymer composite materials, as well as hardeners for epoxy resins. Chlorine-containing polybenzoxazines require more severe conditions for polymerization but have better fire resistance.

Synthesis of Phosphazene-Containing, Bisphenol A-Based Benzoxazines and Properties of Corresponding Polybenzoxazines

With the aim of obtaining halogen-free polybenzoxazazines with reduced flammability, phosphazene-containing benzoxazines (PhBZ) were synthesized in a two-stage method. In the first stage of the reaction of hexachlorocycotriphosphazene with bisphenol A at molar ratios of 1:12, 1:16, and 1:24, respectively, mixtures of bisphenol and hydroxyaryloxycyclotriphosphazenes were obtained, which mainly contained P₃N₃[OC₆H₄C(CH₃)₃C₆H₄OH]₆. In the second stage, when these mixtures interacted with aniline and an excess of paraformaldehyde in toluene at 80–90 °C, PhBZ containing 20–50% of the phosphazene component with M_w 1200–5800 were formed. According to ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy, PhBZ contain a small amount of oligomeric compounds with Mannich aminomethylene bridges. With an increase of the content of the phosphazene component, the curing temperature of PhBZ decreases from 242 °C to 215 °C. Cured PhBZ samples with a phosphorus content of more than 1.5% have increased flammability resistance according to UL-94.

Easily Processable Thermosets with Outstanding Performance via Smart Twisted Small-Molecule Benzoxazines

High-performance aromatic polymers have excellent thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties and are lightweight, but it is highly challenging to deliver outstanding performances while still maintaining good processability of the precursors. Here, a new family of small-molecule benzoxazine resins with ortho-maleimide functionality is reported, which strikes an exceptional balance between the processability and performance. The excellent processability is attributed to the twisted molecular configurations of ortho-maleimide-substituted benzoxazines, which prevent intermolecular packing in the resin systems. The new benzoxazines can polymerize through multiple routes, which eliminate the twisted structures and create highly cross-linked polymer networks. The resulting new polymers are found to possess fascinating properties such as a high thermal stability (no T_g can be detected before 400 °C), excellent flame retardancy (a heat release capacity of 42.5 J g^-1 K^-1 ), and low dielectric constants (2.62-2.30 in the frequency range of 1 Hz to 10 MHz). The combined processability and versatility highlight the potential of smart benzoxazines in the preparation of high-performance thermosets, with important new applications that may span aerospace, transportation, and electronic packaging materials.

Thermosetting Shape Memory Polymers and Composites Based on Polybenzoxazine Blends, Alloys and Copolymers

When dealing with smart polymers, in particular with shape memory polymers, the polymer type and composition specify the overall material properties and in particular the extent of the shape memory effect. Polybenzoxazines as a polymer with high potential for structural applications represent a promising component for materials with both shape memory effect and structurally interesting material properties. This minireview gives insight into how the shape memory effect, in particular the shape recovery event, is influenced by internal factors such as polymer structure, morphology and external factors such as filler addition.

A Sulfur Copolymers (SDIB)/Polybenzoxazines (PBz) Polymer Blend for Electrospinning of Nanofibers

This study demonstrated the processability of sulfur copolymers (SDIB) into polymer blend with polybenzoxazines (PBz) and their compatibility with the electrospinning process. Synthesis of SDIB was conducted via inverse vulcanization using elemental sulfur (S8). Polymer blends produced by simply mixing with varying concentration of SDIB (5 and 10 wt%) and fixed concentration of PBz (10 wt%) exhibited homogeneity and a single-phase structure capable of forming nanofibers. Nanofiber mats were characterized to determine the blending effect on the microstructure and final properties. Fiber diameter increased and exhibited non-uniform, broader fiber diameter distribution with increased SDIB. Microstructures of mats based on SEM images showed the occurrence of partial aggregation and conglutination with each fiber. Incorporation of SDIB were confirmed from EDX which was in agreement with the amount of SDIB relative to the sulfur peak in the spectra. Spectroscopy further confirmed that SDIB did not affect the chemistry of PBz but the presence of special interaction benefited miscibility. Two distinct glass transition temperatures of 97 °C and 280 °C indicated that new material was produced from the blend while the water contact angle of the fibers was reduced from 130° to 82° which became quite hydrophilic. Blending of SDIB with component polymer proved that its processability can be further explored for optimal spinnability of nanofibers for desired applications.

Bioinspired Design Provides High-Strength Benzoxazine Structural Adhesives

A synthetic strategy to incorporate catechol functional groups into benzoxazine thermoset monomers was developed, leading to a family of bioinspired small-molecule resins and main-chain polybenzoxazines derived from biologically available phenols. Lap-shear adhesive testing revealed a polybenzoxazine derivative with greater than 5 times improved shear strength on aluminum substrates compared to a widely studied commercial benzoxazine resin. Derivative synthesis identified the catechol moiety as an important design feature in the adhesive performance and curing behavior of this bioinspired thermoset. Favorable mechanical properties comparable to commercial resin were maintained, and glass transition temperature and char yield under nitrogen were improved. Blending of monomers with bioinspired main-chain polybenzoxazine derivatives provided formulations with enhanced shear adhesive strengths up to 16 MPa, while alloying with commercial core-shell particle-toughened epoxy resins led to shear strengths exceeding 20 MPa. These results highlight the utility of bioinspired design and the use of biomolecules in the preparation of high-performance thermoset resins and adhesives with potential utility in transportation and aerospace industries and applications in advanced composites synthesis.

Exploring Structure⁻Property Relationships in Aromatic Polybenzoxazines Through Molecular Simulation

A series of commercial difunctional benzoxazine monomers are characterized using thermal and thermo-mechanical techniques before constructing representative polymer networks using molecular simulation techniques. Good agreement is obtained between replicate analyses and for the kinetic parameters obtained from differential scanning calorimetry data (and determined using the methods of Kissinger and Ozawa). Activation energies range from 85 to 108 kJ/mol (Kissinger) and 89 to 110 kJ/mol (Ozawa) for the uncatalyzed thermal polymerization reactions, which achieve conversions of between 85% and 97%. Glass transition temperatures determined from differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis are comparable, ranging from BA-a (151 °C, crosslink density 3.6 × 10⁻³ mol cm⁻³) containing the bisphenol A moiety to BP-a, based on a phenolphthalein bridge (239 to 256 °C, crosslink density 5.5 to 18.4 × 10⁻³ mol cm⁻³, depending on formulation). Molecular dynamics simulations of the polybenzoxazines generally agree well with empirical data, indicating that representative networks have been modelled.

Ring-Opening Polymerization of 1,3-Benzoxazines via Borane Catalyst

Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane was used as Lewis acid catalyst to lower the ring opening polymerization temperature (ROP) of 1,3-benzoxazines. Dynamic scanning calorimeter studies revealed that on-set ROP temperatures were decreased as much as 98 °C for model benzoxazine compounds. Catalytic polymerization was traced by both FTIR and ¹H NMR, and revealed that tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane acted rapidly and fast curing achieved. Moreover, thermal properties of resulting polybenzoxazines were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and found out that the catalyst has high impact on char yield and even 3 mol % catalyst augmented char yields up to 13%.

Developing (Quantitative Structure Property Relationships) QSPR Techniques to Predict the Char Formation of Polybenzoxazines

This study uses the Molecular Operating Environment software (MOE) to generate models to calculate the char yield of polybenzoxazines (PBz). A series of benzoxazine (Bz) monomers were constructed to which a variety of parameters relating to the structure (e.g., water accessible surface, negative van der Waals surface area and hydrophobic volume, etc.) were obtained and a quantitative structure property relationships (QSPR) model was generated. The model was used to generate data for new Bz monomers with desired properties and a comparison was made of predictions based on the QSPR model with the experimental data. This study shows the quality of predictive models and confirms how useful computational screening is prior to synthesis.

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Benzoxazines: When Structural Design Becomes Functional

The future evolution of benzoxazines and polybenzoxazines as advanced molecular, structural, functional, engineering, and newly commercial materials depends to a great extent on a deeper and more fundamental understanding at the molecular level. In this contribution, the field of benzoxazines is briefly introduced along with a more detailed review of ortho-amide-functional benzoxazines, which are the main subjects of this article. Provided in this article are the detailed and solid scientific evidences of intramolecular five-membered-ring hydrogen bonding, which is supposed to be responsible for the unique and characteristic features exhibited by this ever-growing family of ortho-functionalized benzoxazines. One-dimensional (1D) (1)H NMR spectroscopy was used to study various concentrations of benzoxazines in various solvents with different hydrogen-bonding capability and at various temperatures to investigate in detail the nature of hydrogen bonding in both ortho-amide-functionalized benzoxazine and its para counterpart. These materials were further investigated by two-dimensional (2D) (1)H-(1)H nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) to verify and support the conclusions derived during the 1D (1)H NMR experiments. Only highly purified single-crystal benzoxazine samples have been used for this study to avoid additional interactions caused by any impurities.
