Steerable Near-Quadrature Filter Pairs in Three Dimensions

Steerable filter pairs that are near quadrature have many image processing applications. This paper proposes a new methodology for designing such filters. The key idea is to design steerable filters by minimizing a departure-from-quadrature function. These minimizing filter pairs are almost exactly in quadrature. The polar part of the filters is nonnegative, monotonic, and highly focused around an axis, and asymptotically the filters achieve exact quadrature. These results are established by exploiting a relation between the filters and generalized Hilbert matrices. These near-quadrature filters closely approximate three dimensional Gabor filters. We experimentally verify the asymptotic mathematical results and further demonstrate the use of these filter pairs by efficient calculation of local Fourier shell correlation of cryogenic electron microscopy.

Balancing conduction velocity error in cardiac electrophysiology using a modified quadrature approach

Conduction velocity error is often the main culprit behind the need for very fine spatial discretizations and high computational effort in cardiac electrophysiology problems. In light of this, a novel approach for simulating an accurate conduction velocity in coarse meshes with linear elements is suggested based on a modified quadrature approach. In this approach, the quadrature points are placed at arbitrary offsets of the isoparametric coordinates. A numerical study illustrates the dependence of the conduction velocity on the spatial discretization and the conductivity when using different quadrature rules and calculation approaches. Additionally, examples using the modified quadrature in coarse meshes for wave propagation demonstrate the improved accuracy of the conduction velocity with this method. This novel approach possesses great potential in reducing the computational effort required but remains limited to specific linear elements and experiences a reduction in accuracy for irregular meshes and heterogeneous conductivities. Further research can focus on developing an adaptive quadrature and extending the approach to other element formulations in order to make the approach more generally applicable.

Everything you wanted to know about phase and reference frequency in one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy

The fundamental concept of phase discussed in this tutorial aimed at providing students with an explanation of the delays and processing parameters they may find in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) pulse programs. We consider the phase of radio-frequency pulses, receiver, and magnetization and how all these parameters are related to phases and offsets of signals in spectra. The impact of the off-resonance effect on the phase of the magnetization is discussed before presenting an overview of how adjustment of the time reference of the free induction decay avoids first-order correction of the phase of spectra. The main objective of this tutorial is to show how the relative phase of a pulse and the receiver can be used to change the reference frequency along direct and indirect dimensions of NMR experiments. Unusual of phase incrementation with non-90° angles will be illustrated on one- and two-dimensional NMR spectra.

Numerical quadrature over smooth, closed surfaces

The numerical approximation of definite integrals, or quadrature, often involves the construction of an interpolant of the integrand and its subsequent integration. In the case of one dimension it is natural to rely on polynomial interpolants. However, their extension to two or more dimensions can be costly and unstable. An efficient method for computing surface integrals on the sphere is detailed in the literature (Reeger & Fornberg 2016 Stud. Appl. Math.137, 174-188. (doi:10.1111/sapm.12106)). The method uses local radial basis function interpolation to reduce computational complexity when generating quadrature weights for any given node set. This article generalizes this method to arbitrary smooth closed surfaces.

Searching for an optimal AUC estimation method: a never-ending task?

An effective method of construction of a linear estimator of AUC in the finite interval, optimal in the minimax sense, is developed and demonstrated for five PK models. The models may be given as an explicit C(t) relationship or defined by differential equations. For high variability and rich sampling the optimal method is only moderately advantageous over optimal trapezoid or standard numerical approaches (Gauss-Legendre or Clenshaw-Curtis quadratures). The difference between the optimal estimator and other methods becomes more pronounced with a decrease in sample size or decrease in the variability. The described estimation method may appear useful in development of limited-sampling strategies for AUC determination, as an alternative to the widely used regression-based approach. It is indicated that many alternative approaches are also possible.

Quadrature transmit array design using single-feed circularly polarized patch antenna for parallel transmission in MR imaging

Quadrature coils are often desired in MR applications because they can improve MR sensitivity and also reduce excitation power. In this work, we propose, for the first time, a quadrature array design strategy for parallel transmission at 298 MHz using single-feed circularly polarized (CP) patch antenna technique. Each array element is a nearly square ring microstrip antenna and is fed at a point on the diagonal of the antenna to generate quadrature magnetic fields. Compared with conventional quadrature coils, the single-feed structure is much simple and compact, making the quadrature coil array design practical. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the decoupling between elements is better than -35 dB for all the elements and the RF fields are homogeneous with deep penetration and quadrature behavior in the area of interest. Bloch equation simulation is also performed to simulate the excitation procedure by using an 8-element quadrature planar patch array to demonstrate its feasibility in parallel transmission at the ultrahigh field of 7 Tesla.

Optimizing Cubature for Efficient Integration of Subspace Deformations

We propose an efficient scheme for evaluating nonlinear subspace forces (and Jacobians) associated with subspace deformations. The core problem we address is efficient integration of the subspace force density over the 3D spatial domain. Similar to Gaussian quadrature schemes that efficiently integrate functions that lie in particular polynomial subspaces, we propose cubature schemes (multi-dimensional quadrature) optimized for efficient integration of force densities associated with particular subspace deformations, particular materials, and particular geometric domains. We support generic subspace deformation kinematics, and nonlinear hyperelastic materials. For an r-dimensional deformation subspace with O(r) cubature points, our method is able to evaluate subspace forces at O(r(2)) cost. We also describe composite cubature rules for runtime error estimation. Results are provided for various subspace deformation models, several hyperelastic materials (St.Venant-Kirchhoff, Mooney-Rivlin, Arruda-Boyce), and multimodal (graphics, haptics, sound) applications. We show dramatically better efficiency than traditional Monte Carlo integration. Determination of the number of cells in preimplantation embryos by using noninvasive optical quadrature microscopy in conjunction with differential interference contrast microscopy

The number of cells in a preimplantation embryo is directly correlated to the health and viability of the embryo. There are currently no methods to count the number of cells in late-stage preimplantation embryos noninvasively. We assessed the ability of optical quadrature microscopy (OQM) to count the number of cells in mouse preimplantation embryos noninvasively. First, to test for possible light toxicity, we exposed two-cell mouse embryos to OQM and differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy and assessed their ability to develop to the blastocyst stage. We found no inhibition of development from either mode of microscopy for up to 2 h of light exposure. We also imaged eight-cell to morula stage mouse preimplantation embryos by OQM nd developed two methods for counting the number of cells. The contour signature method (CSM) used OQM images alone and the phase subtraction method (PSM) used both OQM and DIC images. We compared both methods to standard cell counting techniques and found that the PSM was superior to all other noninvasive cell counting methods. Our work on mouse embryos should be applicable to human embryos. The ability to correctly count the number of cells in human preimplantation embryos could lead to the transfer of fewer embryos in in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics and consequently a lower rate of high-risk multiple-infant births.
