Topology Reliable LCST-Type Behavior of ABA Triblock Polymer and Influence on Water Condensation and Crystallization

As a kind of smart material, thermoresponsive hydrogels are widely investigated and applied in many fields. Due to the limitation of the freezing temperature of the water, it is a challenge to further broaden their sol-gel transition temperature (T_gel ) range, especially below 0 °C. Herein, the lower critical solution temperature type of amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers, synthesized via two-step reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is demonstrated. The hydrophilic A-block and the hydrophobic B-block are composed of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAA) and poly(diacetone acrylamide) (PDAAM), respectively. The degree of polymerization (DP) of both A-block and B-block shows a significant influence on the T_gel of triblock copolymer dispersion. By changing the length of these two blocks or physically blending these copolymers dispersions, the T_gel can be well adjusted in a temperature range from 45 to -10 °C. Moreover, When the T_gel is higher than 4 °C, the triblock copolymer coatings show a good anti-fogging property. And when the T_gel is around or lower than the freezing temperature of the water, aqueous dispersions of the triblock copolymer have an ice recrystallization inhibition activity, resulting in the decrease of average maximum grain size (MLGS) of ice crystal.

Sulfonated RAFT Copolymers as Heparin Mimetics: Synthesis, Reactivity Ratios, and Anticoagulant Activity

The glycosaminoglycan heparin is a clinically important anticoagulant drug, primarily used to reduce the risk of blood clots (thrombosis) during surgery. Despite its importance in medicine and its continuous use over many decades, heparin suffers from several limitations associated with its heterogeneity and its extraction from animal tissues. In order to address these limitations, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization is utilized to prepare a library of heparin mimetic copolymers from the sulfonated monomers sodium 4-styrene sulfonate, potassium-3-sulfopropyl acrylate, potassium-3-sulfopropyl methacrylate, and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonate. Copolymers are prepared using combinations of two different monomers in various ratios. Monomer reactivity ratios are also determined for some representative monomer combinations, and all polymers are characterized by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The anticoagulant activities of the copolymers are determined by activated partial thromboplastin time and thrombin clotting time assays and structure-activity relationships are explored.

Block Copolymer Nanoparticles Prepared via Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly Provide Excellent Boundary Lubrication Performance for Next-Generation Ultralow-Viscosity Automotive Engine Oils

Core cross-linked poly(stearyl methacrylate)-poly(benzyl methacrylate)-poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [S₃₁-B₂₀₀-E₂₀] triblock copolymer nanoparticles were synthesized directly in an industrial mineral oil via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Gel permeation chromatography analysis of the S₃₁-B₂₀₀ diblock copolymer precursor chains indicated a well-controlled reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization, while transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light-scattering (DLS), and small-angle X-ray scattering studies indicated the formation of well-defined spheres. Moreover, DLS studies performed in THF, which is a common solvent for the S and B blocks, confirmed successful covalent stabilization because well-defined solvent-swollen spheres were obtained under such conditions. Tribology experiments using a mini-traction machine (MTM) indicated that 0.50% w/w dispersions of S₃₁-B₂₀₀-E₂₀ spheres dramatically reduce the friction coefficient of base oil within the boundary lubrication regime. Given their efficient and straightforward PISA synthesis at high solids, such nanoparticles offer new opportunities for the formulation of next-generation ultralow-viscosity automotive engine oils.

Synthesis of Multifunctional Homopolymers through Using Thiazolidine Chemistry and Post-Polymerization Modification

Multifunctional homopolymers, defined here as polymers that contain multiple reactive functional groups per repeat unit, are versatile scaffolds for preparing complex macromolecules via post-polymerization modification. However, there are limited methods for preparing multifunctional homopolymers that contain more than one nucleophilic site per repeat unit. Herein, a strategy to synthesize a multifunctional homopolymer using thiazolidine chemistry is demonstrated. Controlled radical polymerization of a thiazolidine-containing acrylamido monomer allows for the synthesis of a polymer with pendent latent nucleophiles. Ring-opening of the thiazolidine affords a homopolymer with two side-chain reactive sites, an amine and a thiol. One-pot functionalization via disulfide formation and acyl substitution is performed to introduce two distinct groups in each repeat unit.

Surfactant-Free RAFT Emulsion Polymerization of Styrene Using Thermoresponsive macroRAFT Agents: Towards Smart Well-Defined Block Copolymers with High Molecular Weights

The combination of reversible addition⁻fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and emulsion polymerization has recently attracted much attention as a synthetic tool for high-molecular-weight block copolymers and their micellar nano-objects. Up to recently, though, the use of thermoresponsive polymers as both macroRAFT agents and latex stabilizers was impossible in aqueous media due to their hydrophobicity at the usually high polymerization temperatures. In this work, we present a straightforward surfactant-free RAFT emulsion polymerization to obtain thermoresponsive styrenic block copolymers with molecular weights of around 100 kDa and their well-defined latexes. The stability of the aqueous latexes is achieved by adding 20 vol % of the cosolvent 1,4-dioxane (DOX), increasing the phase transition temperature (PTT) of the used thermoresponsive poly(N-acryloylpyrrolidine) (PAPy) macroRAFT agents above the polymerization temperature. Furthermore, this cosolvent approach is combined with the use of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-block-poly(N-acryloylpiperidine-co-N-acryloylpyrrolidine) (PDMA-b-P(APi-co-APy)) as the macroRAFT agent owning a short stabilizing PDMA end block and a widely adjustable PTT of the P(APi-co-APy) block in between 4 and 47 °C. The temperature-induced collapse of the latter under emulsion polymerization conditions leads to the formation of RAFT nanoreactors, which allows for a very fast chain growth of the polystyrene (PS) block. In dynamic light scattering (DLS), as well as cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryoTEM), moreover, all created latexes indeed reveal a high (temperature) stability and a reversible collapse of the thermoresponsive coronal block upon heating. Hence, this paper pioneers a versatile way towards amphiphilic thermoresponsive high-molecular-weight block copolymers and their nano-objects with tailored corona switchability.
