Abstract
OBJECTIVES Inadequate trunk function is the underlying cause of many problems such as impaired balance and mobility. Although there have been trunk-based physiotherapy approaches in recent years, almost all of these approaches focus on motor problems. This study aims to investigate the effects of sensory training combined with trunk-centered Bobath exercises on trunk control and proprioception, balance, gait, and the activity of daily living (ADL). MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is a randomized controlled trial included with twenty-seven stroke patients. Participants were separated into two groups, Group 1; 'sensory training combined with trunk-centered Bobath exercises' and Group 2; 'trunk-centered Bobath exercises'. Trunk-centered Bobath exercises were used for motor training. Sensory training included transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation and a set of exercises that provide tactile and proprioceptive stimulation. Trunk Impairment Scale, Trunk Reposition Error, Berg Balance Scale, 2-minute walk test, and Barthel Index were used to assess trunk control, trunk proprioception, balance, gait, and ADL respectively. RESULTS Intra-group analysis results showed that trunk control, trunk proprioception, balance, gait, and ADL improved in both groups after treatment (p < 0.05). The changes in the Trunk Reposition Error values of the participants in Group 1 before and after treatment was found to be significantly higher than Group 2 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings indicated that the application of trunk-centered motor training is effective in improving trunk proprioception and trunk control, balance, gait, and ADL in stroke patients. Also, sensory training combined with trunk-centered motor training was found more effective in improving trunk proprioception than solely motor training.

Abstract
The sensory quality of fluid milk is of great importance to processors and consumers. Defects in the expected odor, flavor, or body of the product can affect consumer attitudes toward the product and, ultimately, willingness to purchase the product. Although many methods of sensory evaluation have been developed, defect judging is one particular method that has been used for decades in the dairy industry for evaluating fluid milk. Defect judging is a technique whereby panelists are trained to recognize and rate a standard set of fluid milk defects that originate from various sources (e.g., microbial spoilage). This technique is primarily used in processing facilities where identification of sensory defects can alert personnel to potential quality control issues in raw material quality, processing, or good manufacturing practices. In 2014-2016, a preliminary study of defective milk judging screening and training was conducted by the Milk Quality Improvement Program at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). The study, which included 37 staff and students from the Cornell community, used prescreenings for common odors and basic tastes, followed by uniform training to select, initially train, and retrain defect judges of unflavored high temperature, short time fluid milk. Significant improvements were seen in correct identification of defect attributes following initial training for all defect attributes, with the exception of fruity/fermented. However, following retraining, significant improvements were observed in only 2 defect attributes: cooked and milk carton. These results demonstrate that initial training is important for panelists to correctly identify fluid milk defect attributes, but that subsequent retraining should be tailored toward specific attributes. This study provides a resource for dairy industry stakeholders to use to develop relevant and efficient training methods for fluid milk defect judging panels.

Abstract
Cholinergic stimulation coupled with visual conditioning enhances the visual acuity and cortical responses in the primary visual cortex. To determine which cholinergic receptors are involved in these processes, qRT-PCR was used. Two modes of cholinergic enhancement were tested: a phasic increase of acetylcholine release by an electrical stimulation of the basal forebrain cholinergic nucleus projecting to the visual cortex, or a tonic pharmacological potentiation of the cholinergic transmission by the acetylcholine esterase inhibitor, donepezil. A daily visual exposure to sine-wave gratings (training) was paired with the cholinergic enhancement, up to 14 days. qRT-PCR was performed at rest, 10 min, one week or two weeks of visual/cholinergic training with samples of the visual and somatosensory cortices, and the BF for determining mRNA expression of muscarinic receptor subtypes (m1, m2, m3, m4, m5), nicotinic receptor subunits (α3, α4, α7, β2, β4), and NMDA receptors, GAD65 and ChAT, as indexes of cortical plasticity. A Kruskal-Wallis test showed a modulation of the expression in the visual cortex of m2, m3, m4, m5, α7, β4, NMDA and GAD65, but only β4 within the basal forebrain and none of these mRNA within the somatosensory cortex. The two modes of cholinergic enhancement induced different effects on mRNA expression, related to the number of visual conditioning sessions and receptor specificity. This study suggests that the combination of cholinergic enhancement and visual conditioning is specific to the visual cortex and varies between phasic or tonic manipulation of acetylcholine levels.

Abstract
A large body of literature supports cognitive enhancement as an effect of cholinergic potentiation. However, it remains elusive whether pharmacological manipulations of cholinergic neurotransmission enhance complex visual processing in healthy individuals. To test this hypothesis, we randomly administered either the cholinergic transmission enhancer donepezil (DPZ; 5 mg P.O.) or placebo (lactose) to young adults (n = 17) 3 h before each session of the three-dimensional (3D) multiple object tracking (3D-MOT) task. This multi-focal attention task evaluates perceptual-cognitive learning over five sessions conducted 7 days apart. A significant amount of learning was observed in the DPZ group but not the placebo group in the fourth session. In the fifth session, this learning effect was observed in both groups. Furthermore, preliminary results for a subgroup of participants (n = 9) 4–14 months later suggested the cholinergic enhancement effect was long lasting. On the other hand, DPZ had no effect on basic visual processing as measured by a motion and orientation discrimination task performed as an independent one-time, pre-post drug study without placebo control (n = 10). The results support the construct that cholinergic enhancement facilitates the encoding of a highly demanding perceptual-cognitive task although there were no significant drug effects on the performance levels compared to placebo.

Abstract
Sensory processing difficulties are common among many special needs children, especially those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The sensory sensitivities often result in interference of daily functioning and can lead to social isolation for both the individual and family unit. A quality improvement (QI) project was undertaken within a local zoo to systematically implement a sensory training program targeted at helping special needs individuals with sensory challenges, including those with ASD, Down's syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and speech delay. We piloted the program over a 2-year period. The program consisted of staff training, provision of sensory bags and specific social stories, as well as creation of quiet zones. Two hundred family units were surveyed before and after implementation of the sensory training program. In this pilot QI study, families reported increased visitation to the zoo, improved interactions with staff members, and the overall quality of their experience. In conclusion, we are able to demonstrate that a sensory training program within the community zoo is feasible, impactful, and has the potential to decrease social isolation for special needs individuals and their families.

Abstract
Sensory training therapies for tinnitus are based on the assumption that, notwithstanding neural changes related to tinnitus, auditory training can alter the response properties of neurons in auditory pathways. To assess this assumption, we investigated whether brain changes induced by sensory training in tinnitus sufferers and measured by electroencephalography (EEG) are similar to those induced in age and hearing loss matched individuals without tinnitus trained on the same auditory task. Auditory training was given using a 5 kHz 40-Hz amplitude-modulated (AM) sound that was in the tinnitus frequency region of the tinnitus subjects and enabled extraction of the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR) and P2 transient response known to localize to primary and non-primary auditory cortex, respectively. P2 amplitude increased over training sessions equally in participants with tinnitus and in control subjects, suggesting normal remodeling of non-primary auditory regions in tinnitus. However, training-induced changes in the ASSR differed between the tinnitus and control groups. In controls the phase delay between the 40-Hz response and stimulus waveforms reduced by about 10° over training, in agreement with previous results obtained in young normal hearing individuals. However, ASSR phase did not change significantly with training in the tinnitus group, although some participants showed phase shifts resembling controls. On the other hand, ASSR amplitude increased with training in the tinnitus group, whereas in controls this response (which is difficult to remodel in young normal hearing subjects) did not change with training. These results suggest that neural changes related to tinnitus altered how neural plasticity was expressed in the region of primary but not non-primary auditory cortex. Auditory training did not reduce tinnitus loudness although a small effect on the tinnitus spectrum was detected.
