A human pilot study on positive electrostatic charge effects in solid tumors of the late-stage metastatic patients

Background

Correlative interactions between electrical charges and cancer cells involve important unknown factors in cancer diagnosis and treatment. We previously reported the intrinsic suppressive effects of pure positive electrostatic charges (PEC) on the proliferation and metabolism of invasive cancer cells without any effect on normal cells in cell lines and animal models. The proposed mechanism was the suppression of pro-caspases 3 and 9 with an increase in Bax/Bcl2 ratio in exposed malignant cells and perturbation induced in the KRAS pathway of malignant cells by electrostatic charges due to the phosphate molecule electrostatic charge as the trigger of the pathway. This study aimed to examine PECs as a complementary treatment for patients with different types of solid metastatic tumors, who showed resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Methods

In this study, solid metastatic tumors of the end-stage patients (n = 41) with various types of cancers were locally exposed to PEC for at least one course of 12 days. The patient's signs and symptoms, the changes in their tumor size, and serum markers were followed up from 30 days before positive electrostatic charge treating (PECT) until 6 months after the study.

Results

Entirely, 36 patients completed the related follow-ups. Significant reduction in tumor sizes and cancer-associated enzymes as well as improvement in cancer-related signs and symptoms and patients' lifestyles, without any side effects on other tissues or metabolisms of the body, were observed in more than 80% of the candidates.

Conclusion

PECT induced significant cancer remission in combination with other therapies. Therefore, this non-ionizing radiation would be a beneficial complementary therapy, with no observable side effects of ionizing radiotherapy, such as post-radiation inflammation.

Development of an Interactive Touchless Technology Based on Static-Electricity-Induced Luminescence

Touchless technology has garnered significant interest in recent years because of its effectiveness in combating infectious diseases such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The goal of this study was to develop an inexpensive and high-precision touchless technology. A base substrate was coated with a luminescent material that emitted static-electricity-induced luminescence (SEL), and it was applied at high voltage. An inexpensive web camera was used to verify the relationship between the non-contact distance to a needle and the applied-voltage-triggered luminescence. The SEL was emitted at 20-200 mm from the luminescent device upon voltage application, and the web camera detected the SEL position with an accuracy of less than 1 mm. We used this developed touchless technology to demonstrate a highly accurate real-time detection of the position of a human finger based on SEL.

A narrative review of hydrogen-oxygen mixture for medical purpose and the inhaler thereof

Recent development regarding mixture of H₂ (concentration of ~66%) with O₂ (concentration of ~34%) for medical purpose, such as treatment of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patients, is introduced. Furthermore, the design principles of a hydrogen inhaler which generates mixture of hydrogen (~66%) with oxygen (~34%) for medical purpose are proposed. With the installation of the liquid blocking module and flame arresters, the air pathway of the hydrogen inhaler is divided by multiple isolation zones to prevent any unexpected explosion propagating from one zone to the other. An integrated filtering/cycling module is utilized to purify the impurity, and cool down the temperature of the electrolytic module to reduce the risk of the explosion. Moreover, a nebulizer is provided to selectively atomize the water into vapor which is then mixed with the filtered hydrogen-oxygen mix gas, such that the static electricity of a substance hardly occurs to reduce the risk of the explosion. Furthermore, hydrogen concentration detector is installed to reduce the risk of hydrogen leakage. Result shows that the hydrogen inhaler implementing the aforesaid design rules could effectively inhibit the explosion, even ignition at the outset of the hydrogen inhaler which outputs hydrogen-oxygen gas (approximately 66% hydrogen: 34% oxygen).

Preventing explosions of hydrogen gas inhalers

Production and excretion of hydrogen (H₂) gas in human was reported in 1969, since then it has been regarded as non-toxic molecule. For preventive and therapeutic medical uses, a possible treatment for cancer was reported and another article was published on how H₂ acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals. A variety of H₂ gas inhalers have been available in the market for hospital and home uses. However, H₂ is odorless and flammable or explosive ignited by static electricity. We have examined the safety of a variety of H₂ gas concentrations from the viewpoint of flammability and explosion. We have also measured concentrations of H₂ gas inhalers in the market respectively. This paper also details how to control H₂ gas concentration for preventing explosions.

Static electricity sparks household cleaning agent causing facial burn

Static electricity is the build up of an electrical charge secondary to the redistribution of electrons between two non-conducting materials as they rub against one another. In the domestic setting, a static discharge rarely causes significant injury, as although the voltage can be higher than normal domestic voltage (240V), the current is relatively low. However, in cases where highly flammable substances are used, the risk of a static charge causing a flash is much greater. Our institution presents the first documented case of static electrical ignition of a substance causing facial burns. While cleaning a large plastic bin sprayed with 'Ambersil', a highly flammable mould-removing aerosol spray that can be purchased for domestic use, the 60-year-old female patient placed her face inside the bin to reach the bottom and received a large flash burn to her face and right arm that was 2.5% TBSA (total body surface area) and superficial dermal in nature. She was treated conservatively and discharged. Despite advances in electrical safety in the domestic and industrial settings, there are still real risks of significant burn injuries, which manufacturers, employers and the general public should be made aware of.

The Cutting and Floating Method for Paraffin-embedded Tissue for Sectioning

Sectioning of the paraffin-embedded tissue is widely used in histology and pathology. However, it is tedious. To improve this method, several commercial companies have devised complex section transfer systems using fluid water. To simplify this technology, we created a simple method using homemade equipment that combines cutting and floating within a simple thermostatic chamber; therefore, the sections automatically enter the water bath on the water surface. The hippocampus from adult mouse brains, adult mouse kidneys, embryonic mouse brains, and adult zebrafish eyes were cut using both conventional paraffin sectioning and the presented method for comparison. Statistical analysis shows that our improved method saved time and produced higher quality sections. In addition, paraffin sectioning of a whole specimen in a short time is easy for junior operators.

Electrostatic hazards of charging of bedclothes and ignition in medical facilities

We investigated the charge generated on bedclothes (cotton and polyester) during bedding exchange with different humidities and the ignitability of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (72.3 mass% ethanol) due to static spark with different temperatures to identify the hazards of electrostatic shocks and ignitions occurring previously in medical facilities. The results indicated that charging of the polyester bedclothes may induce a human body potential of over about 10 kV, resulting in shocks even at a relative humidity of 50%, and a human body potential of higher than about 8 kV can cause a risk for the ignition of the hand sanitizer. The grounding of human bodies via footwear and flooring, therefore, is essential to avoid such hazards (or to reduce such risks).

Static Electricity-Responsive Supramolecular Assembly

Stimuli-responsive materials can convert between molecular scale and macroscopic scale phenomena. Two macroscopic static electricity-responsive phenomena based on nanoscale supramolecular assemblies of a zinc porphyrin derivative are presented. One example involves the movement of supramolecular assemblies in response to static electricity. The assembly of a pyridine (Py) complex of the above-mentioned derivative in cyclohexane is drawn to a positively charged material, whereas the assembly of a 3,5-dimethylpyridine complex is drawn to a negatively charged material. The second phenomenon involves the movement of a non-polar solvent in response to static electrical stimulation. A cyclohexane solution containing a small quantity of the Py-complexed assembly exhibited a strong movement response towards negatively charged materials. Based on spectroscopic measurements and electron microscope observations, it was revealed that the assembled formation generates the observed response to static electricity.
