Synthetic dyes: A mass spectrometry approach and applications

Synthetic dyes are found in a wide variety of applications today, including but not limited to textiles, foods, and medicine. The analysis of these molecules is pertinent to several fields such as forensics, environmental monitoring, and quality control, all of which require the sensitivity and selectivity of analysis provided by mass spectrometry (MS). Recently, there has been an increase in the implementation of MS evaluation of synthetic dyes by various methods, with the majority of research thus far falling under electrospray ionization and moving toward direct ionization methods. This review covers an overview of the chemistry of synthetic dyes needed for the understanding of MS sample preparation and spectral results, current fields of application, ionization methods, and fragmentation trends and works that have been reported in recent years.

Steric and Energetic Studies on the Synergetic Enhancement Effect of Integrated Polyaniline on the Adsorption Properties of Toxic Basic and Acidic Dyes by Polyaniline/Zeolite-A Composite

The synergetic enhancement effect of the polyaniline (PANI) integration process on the adsorption properties of the PANI/zeolite-A composite (PANI/ZA) as an adsorbent for malachite green and Congo red synthetic dyes was evaluated based on classic equilibrium modelling in addition to the steric and energetic parameters of advanced isotherm studies. The PANI/ZA composite displays enhanced adsorption capacities for both methylene blue (270.9 mg/g) and Congo red (235.5 mg/g) as compared to ZA particles (methylene blue (179.6 mg/g) and Congo red (140.3 mg/g)). The reported enhancement was illustrated based on the steric parameters of active site density (Nm) and the number of adsorbed dyes per active site (n). The integration of PANI strongly induced the quantities of the existing active sites that have enhanced affinities towards both methylene blue (109.2 mg/g) and Congo red (92.9 mg/g) as compared to the present sites on the surface of ZA. Every site on the surface of PANI/ZA can adsorb about four methylene blue molecules and five Congo red molecules, signifying the vertical orientation of their adsorbed ions and their uptake by multi-molecular mechanisms. The energetic investigation of the methylene blue (-10.26 to -16.8 kJ/mol) and Congo red (-9.38 to -16.49 kJ/mol) adsorption reactions by PANI/ZA suggested the operation of physical mechanisms during their uptake by PANI/ZA. These mechanisms might involve van der Waals forces, dipole bonding forces, and hydrogen bonding (<30 kJ/mol). The evaluated thermodynamic functions, including enthalpy, internal energy, and entropy, validate the exothermic and spontaneous behaviours of the methylene blue and Congo red uptake processes by PANI/ZA.

Rice Husk-Cellulose-Based Agricultural Waste Enhances the Degradation of Synthetic Dyes Using Multiple Enzyme-Producing Extremophiles

The brightly colored synthetic dyes used in the textile industry are discharged at high concentrations-for example, various azo dyes including Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO)-which is a matter of global concern, as such dyes are harmful to humans and the environment. Microbial degradation is considered an efficient alternative for overcoming the disadvantages of conventional physical and chemical dye removal methods. In this study, we investigated the potential of multiple types of the enzyme-producing extremophilic bacteria Bacillus FW2, isolated from food waste leachate, for the decolorization and bioremediation of artificial synthetic dyes. The screening of enzyme production and assaying of bacterial strain enzymes are essential for enhancing the breakdown of azo bonds in textile azo dyes. The degradation efficiencies of the water-soluble dyes MB and MO were determined at different concentrations using rice husk, which is an efficient substrate. Using the rice husks, the MO was removed completely within 20 h, and an estimated 99.8% of MB was degraded after 24 h by employing shaking at 120 rpm at 40 °C-whereas a removal efficiency of 98.9% was achieved for the combination of MB + MO. These results indicate the possibility of applying an extremophilic bacterial strain, Bacillus sp., for large-scale dye degradation in the future.

Biological and molecular approaches of the degradation or decolorization potential of the hypersaline Lake Tuz Bacillus megaterium H2 isolate

The presence of synthetic dyes in water bodies and soil is one of the major issues affecting the global ecology, possibly impacting societal well-being adversely due to the colorants' recalcitrance and toxicity. Herein, the study spectrophotometrically monitored the ability of the Bacillus megaterium H2 azoreductase (AzrBmH2) to degrade four synthetic dyes, reactive blue 4, remazol brilliant red, thymol blue, and methyl red, followed by in-silico assessment using GROMACS. We found that the bacterium degraded as much as 60% of all four synthetic dyes at various tested concentrations. The genome analysis revealed five different azoreductase genes, which were then modeled into the AzrBmH21, AzrBmH22/3, and AzrBmH24/5 templates. The AzrBmH2-substrate complexes showed binding energies with all the dyes of between -10.6 to -6.9 kcal/mol and formed 4-6 hydrogen bonds with the predicted catalytic binding residues (His10, Glu 14, Ser 58, Met 99, Val 107, His 183, Asn184 and Gln 191). In contrast, the lowest binding energies were observed for the AzrBmH21-substrates (-10.6 to -7.9). Molecular dynamic simulations revealed that the AzrBmH21-substrate complexes were more stable (RMSD 0.2-0.25 nm, RMSF 0.05 - 0.3 nm) and implied strong bonding with the dyes. The Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area results also mirrored this outcome, showing the lowest azoreductase-dye binding energy in the order of AzrBmH21-RB4 (-78.18 ± 8.92 kcal/mol), AzrBmH21-RBR (-67.51 ± 7.74 kcal/mol), AzrBmH21-TB (-46.62 ± 5.23 kcal/mol) and AzrBmH21-MR (-40.78 ± 7.87 kcal/mol). In short, the study demonstrated the ability of the B. megaterium H2 to efficiently decolorize the above-said synthetic dyes, conveying the bacterium's promising use for large-scale dye remediation.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Inside the History of Italian Coloring Industries: An Investigation of ACNA Dyes through a Novel Analytical Protocol for Synthetic Dye Extraction and Characterization

The introduction of synthetic dyes completely changed the industrial production and use of colorants for art materials. From the synthesis of the first synthetic dye, mauveine, in 1856 until today, artists have enjoyed a wider range of colors and selection of chemical properties than was ever available before. However, the introduction of synthetic dyes introduced a wider variety and increased the complexity of the chemical structures of marketed dyes. This work looks towards the analysis of synthetically dyed objects in heritage collections, applying an extraction protocol based on the use of ammonia, which is considered favorable for natural anthraquinone dyes but has never before been applied to acid synthetic dyes. This work also presents an innovative cleanup step based on the use of an ion pair dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the purification and preconcentration of historical synthetic dyes before analysis. This approach was adapted from food science analysis and is applied to synthetic dyes in heritage science for the first time in this paper. The results showed adequate recovery of analytes and allowed for the ammonia-based extraction method to be applied successfully to 15 samples of suspected azo dyes from the Azienda Coloranti Nazionali e Affini (ACNA) synthetic dye collection, identified through untargeted HPLC-HRMS analyses.

Dermatological Symptoms among Polyester Dyeing and Printing Workers in Mumbai

Background

Textile is one of the important sectors in the Indian economy. The use of synthetic chemicals is maximum during the wet processing technique, which consists of dyeing, printing and finishing.

Aims and Objectives

This study was conducted to find out the prevalence of occupational dermatological symptoms among the workers employed in the dyeing and printing unit of the textile industry.

Materials and Methods

A cross-sectional study, with a sample of 242 workers, was conducted in three different dyeing and printing factories. The workers were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire adapted from the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire.

Results

The prevalence of dermatological symptoms on the hands was found to be 51.7%. The various pattern of lesions included redness in 0.4% to itching in 26% of dyeing and printing workers. Those working for >5 years had 2.21 times higher risk as compared to those working for ≤5 years Odds Ratio (OR): 2.21; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.19-4.11). Similarly, those working in the dyeing section were at 2.94 times higher risk as compared to those working in the printing section (OR: 2.94; 95% CI: 1.58-5.47).

Conclusion

The workers working in the printing and dyeing industry were at risk of developing skin lesions, which can partly be attributed to reactive chemicals used and partly to poor handling practices of the workers.

Ultraviolet-activated clamshell hydroxyapatite-substituted palladium in the photoreduction of methyl orange water pollutant

This study focuses on the modification of natural hydroxyapatite (HAp) derived from clamshell by impregnation with palladium (Pd) at different pH in wet precipitation method to produce photoactive green materials for the degradation of synthetic dyes. It was found that, at pH 10, Pd has been successfully impregnated into HAp lattice with Ca/P ratio of 1.77 and particle distribution size range of 40-470 nm. The impregnation has resulted in the band gap of Pd/HAp at 3.19 eV, as calculated using Tauc's plot from the UV-Vis spectroscopy data of the Pd/HAp. Next, the photocatalytic activities of Pd/HAp were carried out with methyl oranges (MO) as models of water pollutants under UV irradiation. The photodegradation efficiency of the catalyst reached the optimum value of 41.63%, 48.17%, and 43.64% after 120 min of continuous UV irradiation for pH values 8, 10, and 11.5 of Pd/HAp samples, respectively. This study opens a new paradigm in using naturally derived materials as photocatalysts in the reduction of persistent water pollutants at a low cost and green sustainable approach.

Synthesis of Ruthenium-Promoted ZnO/SBA-15 Composites for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye

Synthetic organic pigments like xanthene and azo dyes from the direct discharge of textile effluents are considered colossal global issues and attract the concern of scholars. Photocatalysis continues to be a very valuable pollution control method for industrial wastewater. Incorporations of metal oxide catalysts such as zinc oxide (ZnO) on mesoporous Santa Barbara Armophous-15 (SBA-15) support to improve catalyst thermo-mechanical stability have been comprehensively reported. However, charge separation efficiency and light absorption of ZnO/SBA-15 continue to be limiting its photocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a successful preparation of Ruthenium-induced ZnO/SBA-15 composite via conventional incipient wetness impregnation technique with the aim of boosting the photocatalytic activity of the incorporated ZnO. Physicochemical properties of the SBA-15 support, ZnO/SBA-15, and Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ physisorption isotherms at 77 K, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The characterization outcomes exhibited that ZnO and ruthenium species have been successfully embedded into SBA-15 support, andtheSBA-15 support maintains its structured hexagonal mesoscopic ordering in both ZnO/SBA-15 and Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 composites. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was assessed through photo-assisted mineralization of aqueous MB solution, and the process was optimized for initial dye concentration and catalyst dosage. 50 mg catalyst exhibited significant degradation efficiency of 97.96% after 120 min, surpassing the efficiencies of 77% and 81% displayed by 10 and 30 mg of the as-synthesized catalyst. The photodegradation rate was found to decrease with an increase in the initial dye concentration. The superior photocatalytic activity of Ru-ZnO/SBA-15 over the binary ZnO/SBA-15 may be attributed to the slower recombination rate of photogenerated charges on the ZnO surface with the addition of ruthenium.

The Application of Polymer Inclusion Membranes for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants and Synthetic Dyes from Aqueous Solutions-A Mini Review

Pollution of the environment, including water resources, is currently one of the greatest challenges due to emerging new contaminants of anthropogenic origin. Of particular concern are emerging organic pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, and pesticides, but also other industrial pollutants, for example, synthetic dyes. The growing demand for environmentally friendly and economical methods of removing emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from wastewater resulted in increased interest in the possibility of using techniques based on the application of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) for this purpose. PIM-based techniques are promising methods for eliminating emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions, including wastewater, due to high efficiency, membranes versatility, ease/low cost of preparation, and high selectivity. This review describes the latest developments related to the removal of various emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions using PIMs over the past few years, with particular emphasis on research aimed at increasing the effectiveness and selectivity of PIMs, which may contribute to wider use of these methods in the future.

Selective Voltammetric Sensor for the Simultaneous Quantification of Tartrazine and Brilliant Blue FCF

Tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF are synthetic dyes used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The individual and/or simultaneous control of their concentrations is required due to dose-dependent negative health effects. Therefore, the paper presents experimental results related to the development of a sensing platform for the electrochemical detection of tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with MnO₂ nanorods, using anodic differential pulse voltammetry. Homogeneous and stable suspensions of MnO₂ nanorods have been obtained involving cetylpyridinium bromide solution as a cationic surfactant. The MnO₂ nanorods-modified electrode showed a 7.9-fold increase in the electroactive surface area and a 72-fold decrease in the electron transfer resistance. The developed sensor allowed the simultaneous quantification of dyes for two linear domains: in the ranges of 0.10-2.5 and 2.5-15 μM for tartrazine and 0.25-2.5 and 2.5-15 μM for brilliant blue FCF with detection limits of 43 and 41 nM, respectively. High selectivity of the sensor response in the presence of typical interference agents (inorganic ions, saccharides, ascorbic and sorbic acids), other food dyes (riboflavin, indigo carmine, and sunset yellow), and vanillin has been achieved. The sensor has been tested by analyzing soft and isotonic sports drinks and the determined concentrations were close to those obtained involving the chromatography technique.

Melanins from the Lichens Lobaria pulmonaria and Lobaria retigera as Eco-Friendly Adsorbents of Synthetic Dyes

Synthetic dyes are widely used in the industry; they are chemically stable, difficult to neutralize, and therefore they are a threat to the environment when released into wastewaters. The dyes have a significant impact on plant performance by impairing photosynthesis, inhibiting growth, and entering the food chain and may finally result in the toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of food products. Implementation of the dark piment melanin for the adsorption of the synthetic dyes is a new ecologically friendly approach for bioremediation. The aim of the present work was to study the physico-chemical characteristics of melanins from the lichens Lobaria pulmonaria and Lobaria retigera, analyze their adsorption/desorption capacities towards synthetic dyes, and assess the capacity of melanins to mitigate toxicity of the dyes for a common soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Unique chelating properties of melanins determine the perspectives of the use of these high molecular weight polymers for detoxification of xenobiotics.

Production of fungal laccase on pineapple waste and application in detoxification of malachite green

The main purpose of this work was to use pineapple crowns as substrate for optimizing laccase production by Trametes versicolor in lab-scale experiments. One-factor-at-the-time analysis and response surface methodology were used to optimize production. A single laccase with molecular weight of 45 kDa was the main protein produced. A maximal laccase activity of 60.73 ± 1.01 U/g was obtained in 7-day cultures, representing a 6.7-fold increase compared to non-optimized conditions. The optimized conditions were temperature: 28 °C; initial moisture: 90%; glucose: 8.38%; yeast extract: 2.86%. Combining activity and stability, the best conditions for using this laccase during the long periods required by large-scale processes are pH 4.0-5.0 and temperature of 40-50 °C. Under these conditions, the crude laccase was efficient in detoxifying the dye malachite green with a K_M of 14.33 ± 1.94 µM and a V_max of 0.482 ± 0.029 µM/min with 0.1 units/mL. It can be concluded that pineapple crown leaves can be effectively used as substrate by T. versicolor for producing laccase under solid-state culture conditions. Laccase is an industrially relevant enzyme and its production with concomitant valorization of pineapple crowns as substrate offers highly interesting perspectives.

Application of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers in the Analysis of Waters and Wastewaters

The increase of the global population and shortage of renewable water resources urges the development of possible remedies to improve the quality and reusability of waste and contaminated water supplies. Different water pollutants, such as heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), and pharmaceuticals, are produced through continuous technical and industrial developments that are emerging with the increasing population. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) represent a class of synthetic receptors that can be produced from different types of polymerization reactions between a target template and functional monomer(s), having functional groups specifically interacting with the template; such interactions can be tailored according to the purpose of designing the polymer and based on the nature of the target compounds. The removal of the template using suitable knocking out agents renders a recognition cavity that can specifically rebind to the target template which is the main mechanism of the applicability of MIPs in electrochemical sensors and as solid phase extraction sorbents. MIPs have unique properties in terms of stability, selectivity, and resistance to acids and bases besides being of low cost and simple to prepare; thus, they are excellent materials to be used for water analysis. The current review represents the different applications of MIPs in the past five years for the detection of different classes of water and wastewater contaminants and possible approaches for future applications.

Concurrent Synthesis and Immobilization of Ag Nanoparticles over TiO2 via Plasma Reduction for Photocatalytic Treatment of Methyl Blue in Water

Pure TiO₂ nanoparticles (TiO₂NPs) were produced via the sol–gel method and then coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to reduce their optical band gap. The concurrent synthesis and immobilization of AgNPs over TiO₂NPs was achieved through the interaction of an open-air argon plasma jet with a solution of silver nitrate/stabilizer/TiO₂NPs. The one-pot plasma synthesis and coating of AgNPs over TiO₂NPs is a more straightforward and environmentally friendly method than others. The plasma-produced Ag/TiO₂ nanocomposites were characterized and tested for their photocatalytic potential by degrading different concentrations of methyl blue (MB) in water. The dye concentration, oxidant dose, catalyst dose, and reaction time were also optimized for MB degradation. XRD results revealed the formation of pure AgNPs, pure TiO₂NPs, and Ag/TiO₂ nanocomposites with an average grain size of 12.36 nm, 18.09 nm, and 15.66 nm, respectively. The immobilization of AgNPs over TiO₂NPs was also checked by producing SEM and TEM images. The band gap of AgNPs, TiO₂NPs, and Ag/TiO₂ nanoparticles was measured about 2.58 eV, 3.36 eV, and 2.86 eV, respectively. The ultraviolet (UV) results of the nanocomposites were supportive of the degradation of synthetic dyes in the visible light spectrum. The AgNPs in the composite not only lowered the band gap but also obstructed the electron–hole recombinations. The Ag/TiO₂ composite catalyst showed 90.9% degradation efficiency with a 5 ppm dye concentration after 120 min of light exposure.

Enzyme-assisted bioremediation approach for synthetic dyes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons degradation

Environmental protection from emerging pollutants has become a significant challenge for mankind as an increasing number of contaminants, including synthetic dyes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), represent a serious risk to ecological and environmental balance. Most synthetic dyes have complex aromatic structures and are resistant to degrade by classical approaches, such as physical and chemical processes, including adsorption, chemical coagulation, flocculation, ion exchange, membrane separation, froth flotation, and reverse osmosis. Enzymes-assisted catalytic transformation of pollutants has become a potential alternative to classical methods because of their ability to react with complex compounds, a quick degradation rate, and producing less harmful by-products. Plant peroxidases, and microbial laccase and lignin-degrading peroxidases (manganese and lignin peroxidase) have gained significant attention for treating aromatic waste due to their capability of oxidizing and detoxifying a wide range of recalcitrant xenobiotics, including PAHs and synthetic dyes. Peroxidases being efficient biocatalysts detoxify an array of toxic compounds by simple free-radical mechanism resulting in the formation of oxidized and depolymerized products of significantly reduced toxicity. Moreover, it is an ecofriendly and economically favorable approach towards the biodegradation of recalcitrant and toxic industrial waste. Among microbial and plant peroxidases, bacterial enzymes have broad substrate specificity and can transform a wide range of recalcitrant substrates. Ligninolytic enzymes oxidize the aromatic ring into quinones and acids by producing free hydroxyl radicals instead of dihydrodiols and mineralize aromatic hydrocarbon in combination with cytochrome P450, monooxygenases, and epoxide hydrolases. In the review, an attempt has been made to provide detailed knowledge about the availability of inexpensive peroxidases sources, their mechanism of action, and degradation potential. The present review summarizes the exploitation of peroxidases from plants, bacteria, and fungus (manganese peroxidase, lignin peroxidase, and laccases) for detoxification and degradation of textile dyes as well as PAHs. Conclusively, peroxidases have great potential to react with almost all classes of synthetic dyes and most PAHs due to broad substrate specificity and transformed them into less harmful metabolites.

Factors Affecting Synthetic Dye Adsorption; Desorption Studies: A Review of Results from the Last Five Years (2017-2021)

The primary, most obvious parameter indicating water quality is the color of the water. Not only can it be aesthetically disturbing, but it can also be an indicator of contamination. Clean, high-quality water is a valuable, essential asset. Of the available technologies for removing dyes, adsorption is the most used method due to its ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and high efficiency. The adsorption process is influenced by several parameters, which are the basis of all laboratories researching the optimum conditions. The main objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information on the most studied influencing factors. The effects of initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, particle size and temperature are illustrated through examples from the last five years (2017-2021) of research. Moreover, general trends are drawn based on these findings. The removal time ranged from 5 min to 36 h (E = 100% was achieved within 5-60 min). In addition, nearly 80% efficiency can be achieved with just 0.05 g of adsorbent. It is important to reduce adsorbent particle size (with Φ decrease E = 8-99%). Among the dyes analyzed in this paper, Methylene Blue, Congo Red, Malachite Green, Crystal Violet were the most frequently studied. Our conclusions are based on previously published literature.

The Effects of Natural and Synthetic Blue Dyes on Human Health: A Review of Current Knowledge and Therapeutic Perspectives

Blue synthetic dyes are widely used in many industries. Although they are approved for use as food dyes and in cosmetics and some medicines, their impacts on consumer health remain unknown. Some studies indicate that 2 synthetic dyes, Blue No. 1 and Blue No. 2, may have toxic effects. It has therefore been suggested that these should be replaced with natural dyes; however, despite being nontoxic and arguably healthier than synthetic dyes, these compounds are often unsuitable for use in food or drugs due to their instability. Nevertheless, among the natural blue pigments, anthocyanins and genipin offer particular health benefits, as they are associated with the prevention of cardiovascular disease and have anticancer, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. This review summarizes the effects of blue food and drug colorings on health and proposes that synthetic colors should be replaced with natural ones.

Screening of Novel Laccase Producers-Isolation and Characterization of Cold-Adapted Laccase from Kabatiella bupleuri G3 Capable of Synthetic Dye Decolorization

Psychrophilic laccases catalyzing the bond formation in mild, environmentally friendly conditions are one of the biocatalysts at the focus of green chemistry. Screening of 41 cold-adapted strains of yeast and yeast-like fungi revealed a new laccase-producing strain, which was identified as Kabatiella bupleuri G3 IBMiP according to the morphological characteristics and analysis of sequences of the D1/D2 regions of 26S rDNA domain and the ITS1-5,8S-ITS2 region. The extracellular activity of laccase in reaction with 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) at the optimal pH 3.5 was 215 U/L after 15 days of growth in a medium with waste material and 126 U/L after 25 days of cultivation in a defined medium. Copper (II) ions (0.4 mM), Tween 80 (1.0 mM) and ascorbic acid (5.0 mM) increased the production of laccase. The optimum temperature for enzyme operation is in the range of 30-40 °C and retains over 60% of the maximum activity at 10 °C. New laccase shows high thermolability-half-life at 40 °C was only 60 min. Enzyme degradation of synthetic dyes was the highest for crystal violet, i.e., 48.6% after 1-h reaction with ABTS as a mediator. Outcomes of this study present the K. bupleuri laccase as a potential psychrozyme for environmental and industrial applications.

Synergistic effect in concurrent removal of toxic methylene blue and acid red-1 dyes from aqueous solution by durian rind: kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and mechanism

In the present study, a synergistic effect between cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic acid red 1 (AR1) on their concurrent adsorptive removal from aqueous binary solution onto durian rind (DR) was systematically investigated in batch mode across different parameters. The concurrent adsorption was pseudo-second-order kinetics and followed the Langmuir isotherm model, similar to their respective single component. The kinetics and intraparticle diffusion analyses demonstrated that the adsorption rate of MB was a 15-fold faster than AR1, and mass transports were governed by a combination of intraparticle and film diffusion. The synergistic effect was evidenced by an enhanced adsorption efficiency of AR1 from 27 to 42%, while that of MB was almost unchanged (97-98%). By changing the molar ratios of MB and AR1, it was found that the maximum adsorption capacity of MB and AR1 was 249 and 200 mg g^-1, respectively, in the binary system higher compared with those in their respective single system (108 and 16 mg g^-1). Overall data indicated that the synergistic effect was due to electrostatic interactions between cationic and anionic synthetic dyes, supported by negatively charged DR surface, leading to the formation of their stacking layers on the adsorbent surface. Novelty statement: A synergistic effect in concurrent adsorptive removal of synthetic dyes from multicomponent wastewater remains a critical research challenge. We believed that electrostatic interaction between ionic dyes could be explored to enhance their removal efficiency. This report is the first time that such a synergistic effect between cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic acid red 1 (AR1) on their concurrent adsorption from aqueous binary system is systematically investigated. The kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and mechanism of the concurrent adsorption of MB and AR1 attributed to the synergistic effect are elucidated in detail.

Characterization of synthetic dyes for environmental and forensic assessments: A chromatography and mass spectrometry approach

Dyes have become common substances since they are employed in mostly all objects surrounding our daily activities such as clothing and upholstery. Based on the usage and disposal of these objects, the transfer of the dyes to other media such as soil and water increases their prevalence in our environment. However, this prevalence could help to solve crimes and pollution problems if detection techniques are proper. For that reason, the detection and characterization of dyes in complex matrices is important to determine the possible events leading to their deposition (natural degradation, attempts of removal, possible match with evidence, among others). Currently, there are several chromatographic and mass spectrometric approaches used for the identification of these organic molecules and their derivatives with high specificity and accuracy. This review presents current chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods that are used for the detection and characterization of disperse, acid, basic, and reactive dyes, and their derivatives.

Bioflocculants Produced by Bacterial Strains Isolated from Palm Oil Mill Effluent for Application in the Removal of Eriochrome Black T Dye from Water

Four strains of bioflocculant-producing bacteria were isolated from a palm oil mill effluent (POME). The four bacterial strains were identified as Pseudomonas alcaliphila (B1), Pseudomonas oleovorans (B2), Pseudomonas chengduensis (B3), and Bacillus nitratireducens (B4) by molecular identification. Among the four bacterial strains, Bacillus nitratireducens (B4) achieved the highest flocculating activity (49.15%) towards kaolin clay suspension after eight hours of cultivation time and was selected for further studies. The optimum conditions for Eriochrome Black T (EBT) flocculation regarding initial pH, type of cation, and B4 dosage were determined to be pH 2, Ca²⁺ cations, and a dosage of 250 mL/L of nutrient broth containing B4. Under these conditions, above 90% of EBT dye removal was attained. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR) analysis of the bioflocculant revealed the presence of hydroxyl, alkyl, carboxyl, and amino groups. This bioflocculant was demonstrated to possess a good flocculating activity, being a promissory, low-cost, harmless, and environmentally friendly alternative for the treatment of effluents contaminated with dyes.

Impact of seawater salinity on the sonochemical removal of emerging organic pollutants

The results presented in this study illustrate the multiple roles of seawater salinity toward the sonochemical degradation, at variable frequencies (300-1700 kHz), of several hazardous substances, i.e. propylparaben (PPR) endocrine disruptor and several synthetic dyes: naphthol blue black (NBB), malachite green (MG), basic red 29 (BR29), acid orange 7 (AO7), Rhodamine B (RhB) and basic fuchsin (BF). Sonochemical treatment degraded all pollutants in seawater at faster rates than in deionized water. The seawater-salts through increasing the ionic strength of the solution act as a potential pusher of hydrophilic pollutants toward the reactive interfacial area of cavitation bubbles. Additionally, the salts reduce the bubble coalescence, which yields higher number of active bubbles in the irradiating media. Analysing the degradation rate of PPR and NBB with two heterogeneous models based on Langmuir kinetics mechanism indicated that the bubble interfacial area was the preferred reaction zone for the ultrasonic degradation of PPR and NBB in seawater.

Catalytic Oxidation Process for the Degradation of Synthetic Dyes: An Overview

Dyes are used in various industries as coloring agents. The discharge of dyes, specifically synthetic dyes, in wastewater represents a serious environmental problem and causes public health concerns. The implementation of regulations for wastewater discharge has forced research towards either the development of new processes or the improvement of available techniques to attain efficient degradation of dyes. Catalytic oxidation is one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), based on the active radicals produced during the reaction in the presence of a catalyst. This paper reviews the problems of dyes and hydroxyl radical-based oxidation processes, including Fenton's process, non-iron metal catalysts, and the application of thin metal catalyst-coated tubular reactors in detail. In addition, the sulfate radical-based catalytic oxidation technique has also been described. This study also includes the effects of various operating parameters such as pH, temperature, the concentration of the oxidant, the initial concentration of dyes, and reaction time on the catalytic decomposition of dyes. Moreover, this paper analyzes the recent studies on catalytic oxidation processes. From the present study, it can be concluded that catalytic oxidation processes are very active and environmentally friendly methods for dye removal.

An Aromatic Dyad Motif in Dye Decolourising Peroxidases Has Implications for Free Radical Formation and Catalysis

Dye decolouring peroxidases (DyPs) are the most recent class of heme peroxidase to be discovered. On reacting with H₂ O₂ , DyPs form a high-valent iron(IV)-oxo species and a porphyrin radical (Compound I) followed by stepwise oxidation of an organic substrate. In the absence of substrate, the ferryl species decays to form transient protein-bound radicals on redox active amino acids. Identification of radical sites in DyPs has implications for their oxidative mechanism with substrate. Using a DyP from Streptomyces lividans, referred to as DtpA, which displays low reactivity towards synthetic dyes, activation with H₂ O₂ was explored. A Compound I EPR spectrum was detected, which in the absence of substrate decays to a protein-bound radical EPR signal. Using a newly developed version of the Tyrosyl Radical Spectra Simulation Algorithm, the radical EPR signal was shown to arise from a pristine tyrosyl radical and not a mixed Trp/Tyr radical that has been widely reported in DyP members exhibiting high activity with synthetic dyes. The radical site was identified as Tyr374, with kinetic studies inferring that although Tyr374 is not on the electron-transfer pathway from the dye RB19, its replacement with a Phe does severely compromise activity with other organic substrates. These findings hint at the possibility that alternative electron-transfer pathways for substrate oxidation are operative within the DyP family. In this context, a role for a highly conserved aromatic dyad motif is discussed.

Photocatalytic degradation of synthetic dyes using iron (III) oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3-Nps) synthesised using Rhizophora mucronata Lam

Biosynthesis of nanoparticles through plant extracts is gaining attention due to the toxic free synthesis process. The environmental engineering applications of many metal oxide nanoparticles have been reported. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3-Nps) were synthesised using a simple biosynthetic method using a leaf extract of a mangrove plant Rhizophora mucronata through reduction of 0.01 M ferric chloride. Fe2O3-Np synthesis was revealed by a greenish colour formation with a surface plasmon band observed close to 368 nm. The stable Fe2O3-Np possessed excitation and emission wavelength of 368.0 and 370.5 nm, respectively. The Fourier-transform infrared spectral analysis revealed the changes in functional groups during formation of Fe2O3-Np. Agglomerations of nanoparticles were observed during scanning electron microscopic analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis confirmed the ferric oxide nature. The average particle size of Fe2O3-Np based on dynamic light scattering was 65 nm. Based on transmission electron microscopic analysis, particles were spherical in shape and the crystalline size was confirmed by selected area electron diffraction pattern analysis. The synthesised Fe2O3-Np exhibited a good photodegradation efficiency with a reduction of 83 and 95% of phenol red and crystal violet under irradiation of sunlight and florescent light, respectively. This report is a facile synthesis method for Fe2O3-Np with high photodegradation efficiency.

Recent Advances on the Analysis of Polychrome Works of Art: SERS of Synthetic Colorants and Their Mixtures With Natural Dyes

The development and application of proper sample pretreatments is often a key step toward the successful analysis of dyes used as artists' materials by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Complexation of the organic colorants with metal ions to dye fabrics and produce lake pigments, as well as undesired interactions with other matrix components such as substrate, binding media, fillers, and extenders, are just some of the issues that typically complicate dye identification in minute samples from invaluable artworks and museum objects. These concerns may be addressed by using, prior to SERS analysis, ad-hoc sample pretreatments that, in addition to increasing the technique's sensitivity, favorably affect its selectivity toward certain molecules or molecular classes. The present work describes a newly developed sample pretreatment based on the use of nitric acid that has proven crucial for the successful detection of aniline and xanthene dyes–the first synthetic organic colorants to be used in printing and painting, among other art forms–in microscopic samples from works of art such as a 19th-century silk fabric, paper cut-outs by Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh's Irises, and Japanese woodblock prints. This treatment promotes the hydrolysis of the dye-metal bond in mordant dyes or lake pigments, resulting in a more efficient adsorption of the dye molecules on the SERS-active substrate and, hence, enabling the acquisition of high-quality spectra. In the case of synthetic colorants, this method shows advantages over hydrolysis with hydrofluoric acid–a procedure previously established for the analysis of red lakes prepared from natural dyes. The nitric acid treatment presented here may be integrated into a multi-step methodology that, by exploiting differences in solubility of various dyes and lake pigments, has enabled for the first time to successfully characterize intentional mixtures of natural and synthetic colorants of the xanthene and anthraquinone molecular classes, i.e., eosin Y and carmine, in a selection of Japanese prints of the Meiji era. The present study paves the way for the systematic identification of synthetic dyes in objects of artistic and archeological interest, even when they are present in mixtures with natural organic colorants.

Erythrosine B and quinoline yellow dyes regulate DNA repair gene expression in human HepG2 cells

Erythrosine B (ErB) is a cherry pink food colorant and is widely used in foods, drugs, and cosmetics. Quinoline yellow (QY) is a chinophthalon derivative used in cosmetic compositions for application to the skin, lips, and/or body surface. Previously, ErB and QY synthetic dyes were found to induce DNA damage in HepG2 cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular basis underlying the genotoxicity attributed to ErB and QY using the RT² Profiler polymerase chain reaction array and by analyzing the expression profile of 84 genes involved in cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and DNA repair in HepG2 cells. ErB (70 mg/L) significantly decreased the expression of two genes ( FEN1 and REV1) related to DNA base repair. One gene ( LIG1) was downregulated and 20 genes related to ATR/ATM signaling ( ATR, RBBP8, RAD1, CHEK1, CHEK2, TOPB1), nucleotide excision repair ( ERCC1, XPA), base excision repair ( FEN1, MBD4), mismatch repair ( MLH1, MSH3, TP73), double strand break repair ( BLM), other DNA repair genes ( BRIP1, FANCA, GADD45A, REV1), and apoptosis ( BAX, PPP1R15A) were significantly increased after treatment with QY (20 mg/L). In conclusion, our data suggest that the genotoxic mechanism of ErB and QY dyes involves the modulation of genes related to the DNA repair system and cell cycle.

The Comparative Study on the Rapid Decolorization of Azo, Anthraquinone and Triphenylmethane Dyes by Anaerobic Sludge

An anaerobic sludge (AS), capable of decolorizing a variety of synthetic dyes, was acclimated and is reported here. The sludge presented a much better dye decolorizing ability than that of different individual strains. A broad spectrum of dyes could be decolorized by the sludge. Continuous decolorization tests showed that the sludge exhibited the ability to decolorize repeated additions of dye. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of the dye wastewater reached 52% after 12 h of incubation. Polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) profiles revealed that the microbial community changed as a result of varying initial concentrations of dyes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that microbial populations in the sludge belonged to the phyla Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria. The degradation products of the three types of dye were identified. For azo dyes, the anaerobic sludge converted Methyl Orange to N,N-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine and 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid; for triphenylmethane dyes, after Malachite Green was decolorized, the analyzed products were found to be a mixture of N,N-dimethylbenzenamine, 3-dimethyl-aminophenol and 4-dimethylaminobenzophenone; for anthraquinone dyes, two products (acetophenone and 2-methylbenzoic acid) were observed after Reactive Blue 19 decolorization. Together, these results suggest that the anaerobic sludge has promising potential for use in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing various types of dyes.

New photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was discovered more than 100 years ago, and has since become a well-studied therapy for cancer and various non-malignant diseases including infections. PDT uses photosensitizers (PSs, non-toxic dyes) that are activated by absorption of visible light to initially form the excited singlet state, followed by transition to the long-lived excited triplet state. This triplet state can undergo photochemical reactions in the presence of oxygen to form reactive oxygen species (including singlet oxygen) that can destroy cancer cells, pathogenic microbes and unwanted tissue. The dual-specificity of PDT relies on accumulation of the PS in diseased tissue and also on localized light delivery. Tetrapyrrole structures such as porphyrins, chlorins, bacteriochlorins and phthalocyanines with appropriate functionalization have been widely investigated in PDT, and several compounds have received clinical approval. Other molecular structures including the synthetic dyes classes as phenothiazinium, squaraine and BODIPY (boron-dipyrromethene), transition metal complexes, and natural products such as hypericin, riboflavin and curcumin have been investigated. Targeted PDT uses PSs conjugated to antibodies, peptides, proteins and other ligands with specific cellular receptors. Nanotechnology has made a significant contribution to PDT, giving rise to approaches such as nanoparticle delivery, fullerene-based PSs, titania photocatalysis, and the use of upconverting nanoparticles to increase light penetration into tissue. Future directions include photochemical internalization, genetically encoded protein PSs, theranostics, two-photon absorption PDT, and sonodynamic therapy using ultrasound.
