Research Progress on the Application of Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Wind Energy Collection

The escalating global energy demand necessitates the exploration of renewable energy sources, with wind energy emerging as a crucial and widely available resource. With wind energy exhibiting a vast potential of approximately 1010 kw/a per year, about ten times that of global hydroelectric power generation, its efficient conversion and utilization hold the promise of mitigating the pressing energy crisis and replacing the dominant reliance on fossil fuels. In recent years, Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as novel and efficient means of capturing wind energy. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the fundamental principles governing four basic working modes of TENGs, elucidating the structures and operational mechanisms of various models employed in wind energy harvesting. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of two major TENG configurations, namely, the vertical touch-separation pattern structure and the independent layer pattern for wind energy collection, emphasizing their respective advantages. Furthermore, the study briefly discusses the current strengths of nano-friction power generation in wind energy harvesting while acknowledging the existing challenges pertaining to device design, durability, operation, and maintenance. The review concludes by presenting potential research directions and prospects for triboelectric nanogenerators generation in the realm of wind energy, offering valuable insights for researchers and scholars in the field.

Biohybrid generators based on living plants and artificial leaves: influence of leaf motion and real wind outdoor energy harvesting

Plants translate wind energy into leaf fluttering and branch motion by reversible tissue deformation. Simultaneously, the outermost structure of the plant, i.e. the dielectric cuticula, and the inner ion-conductive tissue can be used to convert mechanical vibration energy, such as that produced during fluttering in the wind, into electricity by surface contact electrification and electrostatic induction. Constraining a tailored artificial leaf to a plant leaf can enhance oscillations and transient mechanical contacts and thereby increase the electricity outcome. We have studied the effects of wind-induced mechanical interactions between the leaf of a plant (Rhododendron) and a flexible silicone elastomer-based artificial leaf fixed at the petiole on power output and whether performance can be further tuned by altering the vibrational behavior of the artificial leaf. The latter is achieved by modifying a concentrated mass at the tip of the artificial leaf and observing plant-generated current and voltage signals under air flow. In this configuration, the plant-hybrid wind-energy converters can directly power light-emitting diodes and a temperature sensor. Detailed output analysis has revealed that, under all conditions, an increase in wind speed leads to nearly linearly increased voltages and currents. Accordingly, the cumulative sum energy reaches its highest values at the highest wind speed and resulting oscillations of the plant-artificial leaf system. The mass at the tip can, in most cases, be used to increase the voltage amplitude and frequency. Nevertheless, this behavior was found to depend on the individual configuration of the system, such as the leaf morphology. Analysis of these factors under controlled conditions is crucial for optimizing systems meant to operate in unstructured outdoor scenarios. We have established, in a first approach, that the artificial leaf-plant hybrid generator is capable of autonomously generating electricity outdoors under real outdoor wind conditions, even at a low average wind speed of only 1.9 m s^-1.

Eagles enter rotor-swept zones of wind turbines at rates that vary per turbine

There is increasing pressure on wind energy facilities to manage or mitigate for wildlife collisions. However, little information exists regarding spatial and temporal variation in collision rates, meaning that mitigation is most often a blanket prescription. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated variation among turbines and months in an aspect of collision risk-probability of entry by an eagle into a rotor-swept zone (hereafter, "probability of entry"). We examined 10,222 eagle flight paths identified and recorded by an automated bird monitoring system at a wind energy facility in Wyoming, USA. Probabilities of entry per turbine-month combination were 4.03 times greater in some months than others, ranging 0.15 to 0.62. The overall probability of entry for the riskiest turbine (i.e., the one with the greatest probability of entry) was 2.39 times greater than the least-risky turbine. Our methodology describes large variation across turbines and months in the probability of entry. If subsequently combined with information on other sources of variation (i.e., weather, topography), this approach can identify risky versus safe situations for eagles under which cost of management, curtailment prescriptions, and collision risk can be simultaneously minimized.

Optimization of Wind Driven RO Plant for Brackish Water Desalination during Wind Speed Fluctuation with and without Battery

This work aimed to carry out an optimal investigation of the design and operation of a large capacity reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant powered by wind energy. Different scenarios involving two design options, such as using storage tanks or batteries, and operation options, such as using variable or fixed feed pressure, were analyzed and optimized. In addition, another operation option, of using a fixed number of RO vessels or a varying number of active RO vessels, was also considered. It was found that an optimized plant using storage tanks can provide a less expensive water cost and a less complicated plant structure. Moreover, the use of a variable feed pressure can help in attenuating the disturbances incurred in the form of wind intermittency. Conversely, the use of fixed feed pressure and constantly supplied power per vessel can run the RO units smoothly, leading to a predictable production rate. However, this requires operating the plant on different active sets of vessels each hour, which mandates additional automatic control systems. The water cost when storage tanks are utilized can be as low as 7.42 $/m³, while it is around 19.7 $/m³ when a battery is used.

Explaining the Social Acceptance of Renewables through Location-Related Factors: An Application to the Portuguese Case

The public perception of renewable energy sources is generally positive, due to their role in air pollution and CO₂ emission mitigation policies. However, there are local environmental detrimental effects, and empirical evidence is not consistent as to the support of local communities. In the present paper, we analyse the antecedents of public generic perceptions of renewables grounded on objective location-related factors. Personal location-related factors can originate in the involvement of individuals with renewable energy sources. Regional location-related factors concern the importance of the renewable energy source in the district of residence and in relation to other renewables. We implement a questionnaire on public perceptions of renewable energy sources by the general population in mainland Portugal and complement respondent-level responses with renewable energy district information. Regression analysis shows that these objective location-related factors, both personal and regional, help explain public perceptions of renewables and thus we find empirical support for the proposed approach. These results can inform and guide policymakers in tackling future social acceptance issues of renewable energy policies towards lower carbon emissions and less polluting energy production.

Economic Effects of Renewable Energy Expansion Policy: Computable General Equilibrium Analysis for Korea

This study examines the effects of renewable energy expansion policy on the Korean economy and industries using the computable general equilibrium model, which divides the power generation sector into detailed generation technologies and sources. The scenarios are set to observe the cases where the share of solar photovoltaic and wind power generation reaches 7%. The effects are examined according to differing circumstances, such as when greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are regulated, and the funding source for renewable expansion varies. The results show that renewable expansion policies have negative effects on GDP. However, the magnitude of the GDP decline becomes smaller when GHG emissions are regulated. The expansion of renewable energy induces the growth of upstream industries which supply components for renewable generation modules. Regarding employment, the renewable expansion policy can increase the demand for labor. However, the direction and the extent of the effect vary depending on the funding source. When overlapping regulations, such as the emission trading scheme and renewable energy expansion policies, exist in the power generation sector, the renewable energy expansion policy could provide incentives for GHG emission-intensive power sources.

Global Estimates of the Energy Transfer From the Wind to the Ocean, With Emphasis on Near-Inertial Oscillations

Estimates of the kinetic energy transfer from the wind to the ocean are often limited by the spatial and temporal resolution of surface currents and surface winds. Here we examine the wind work in a pair of global, very high-resolution (1/48° and 1/24°) MIT general circulation model simulations in Latitude-Longitude-polar Cap (LLC) configuration that provide hourly output at spatial resolutions of a few kilometers and include tidal forcing. A cospectrum analysis of wind stress and ocean surface currents shows positive contribution at large scales (>300 km) and near-inertial frequency and negative contribution from mesoscales, tidal frequencies, and internal gravity waves. Larger surface kinetic energy fluxes are in the Kuroshio in winter at large scales (40 mW/m2) and mesoscales (-30 mW/m2). The Kerguelen region is dominated by large scale (∼20 mW/m2), followed by inertial oscillations in summer (13 mW/m2) and mesoscale in winter (-12 mW/m2). Kinetic energy fluxes from internal gravity waves (-0.1 to -9.9 mW/m2) are generally stronger in summer. Surface kinetic energy fluxes in the LLC simulations are 4.71 TW, which is 25-85% higher than previous global estimates from coarser (1/6-1/10°) general ocean circulation models; this is likely due to improved representation of wind variability (6-hourly, 0.14°, operational European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). However, the low wind power input to the near-inertial frequency band obtained with LLC (0.16 TW) compared to global slab models suggests that wind variability on time scales less than 6 hr and spatial scales less than 15 km are critical to better representing the wind power input in ocean circulation models.

Impacts of Inter-annual Wind and Solar Variations on the European Power System

Weather-dependent renewable energy resources are playing a key role in decarbonizing electricity. There is a growing body of analysis on the impacts of wind and solar variability on power system operation. Existing studies tend to use a single or typical year of generation data, which overlooks the substantial year-to-year fluctuation in weather, or to only consider variation in the meteorological inputs, which overlooks the complex response of an interconnected power system. Here, we address these gaps by combining detailed continent-wide modeling of Europe's future power system with 30 years of historical weather data. The most representative single years are 1989 and 2012, but using multiple years reveals a 5-fold increase in Europe's inter-annual variability of CO2 emissions and total generation costs from 2015 to 2030. We also find that several metrics generalize to linear functions of variable renewable penetration: CO2 emissions, curtailment of renewables, wholesale prices, and total system costs.

Energy Harvesting Sources, Storage Devices and System Topologies for Environmental Wireless Sensor Networks: A Review

The operational efficiency of remote environmental wireless sensor networks (EWSNs) has improved tremendously with the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies over the past few years. EWSNs require elaborate device composition and advanced control to attain long-term operation with minimal maintenance. This article is focused on power supplies that provide energy to run the wireless sensor nodes in environmental applications. In this context, EWSNs have two distinct features that set them apart from monitoring systems in other application domains. They are often deployed in remote areas, preventing the use of mains power and precluding regular visits to exchange batteries. At the same time, their surroundings usually provide opportunities to harvest ambient energy and use it to (partially) power the sensor nodes. This review provides a comprehensive account of energy harvesting sources, energy storage devices, and corresponding topologies of energy harvesting systems, focusing on studies published within the last 10 years. Current trends and future directions in these areas are also covered.

How Green is 'Green' Energy?

Renewable energy is an important piece of the puzzle in meeting growing energy demands and mitigating climate change, but the potentially adverse effects of such technologies are often overlooked. Given that climate and ecology are inextricably linked, assessing the effects of energy technologies requires one to consider their full suite of global environmental concerns. We review here the ecological impacts of three major types of renewable energy - hydro, solar, and wind energy - and highlight some strategies for mitigating their negative effects. All three types can have significant environmental consequences in certain contexts. Wind power has the fewest and most easily mitigated impacts; solar energy is comparably benign if designed and managed carefully. Hydropower clearly has the greatest risks, particularly in certain ecological and geographical settings. More research is needed to assess the environmental impacts of these 'green' energy technologies, given that all are rapidly expanding globally.

Geophysical potential for wind energy over the open oceans

Wind speeds over open ocean areas are often higher than those in the windiest areas over land, which has motivated a quest to develop technologies that could harvest wind energy in deep water environments. However, it remains unclear whether these open ocean wind speeds are higher because of lack of surface drag or whether a greater downward transport of kinetic energy may be sustained in open ocean environments. Focusing on the North Atlantic region, we provide evidence that there is potential for greater downward transport of kinetic energy in the overlying atmosphere. As a result, wind power generation over some ocean areas can exceed power generation on land by a factor of three or more.

Wind turbines continuously remove kinetic energy from the lower troposphere, thereby reducing the wind speed near hub height. The rate of electricity generation in large wind farms containing multiple wind arrays is, therefore, constrained by the rate of kinetic energy replenishment from the atmosphere above. In recent years, a growing body of research argues that the rate of generated power is limited to around 1.5 W m⁻² within large wind farms. However, in this study, we show that considerably higher power generation rates may be sustainable over some open ocean areas. In particular, the North Atlantic is identified as a region where the downward transport of kinetic energy may sustain extraction rates of 6 W m⁻² and above over large areas in the annual mean. Furthermore, our results indicate that the surface heat flux from the oceans to the atmosphere may play an important role in creating regions where sustained high rates of downward transport of kinetic energy and thus, high rates of kinetic energy extraction may be geophysical possible. While no commercial-scale deep water wind farms yet exist, our results suggest that such technologies, if they became technically and economically feasible, could potentially provide civilization-scale power.

Effects of wind energy development on nesting ecology of greater prairie-chickens in fragmented grasslands

Wind energy is targeted to meet 20% of U.S. energy needs by 2030, but new sites for development of renewable energy may overlap with important habitats of declining populations of grassland birds. Greater Prairie-Chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) are an obligate grassland bird species predicted to respond negatively to energy development. We used a modified before-after control-impact design to test for impacts of a wind energy development on the reproductive ecology of prairie-chickens in a 5-year study. We located 59 and 185 nests before and after development, respectively, of a 201 MW wind energy facility in Greater Prairie-Chicken nesting habitat and assessed nest site selection and nest survival relative to proximity to wind energy infrastructure and habitat conditions. Proximity to turbines did not negatively affect nest site selection (β = 0.03, 95% CI = -1.2-1.3) or nest survival (β = -0.3, 95% CI = -0.6-0.1). Instead, nest site selection and survival were strongly related to vegetative cover and other local conditions determined by management for cattle production. Integration of our project results with previous reports of behavioral avoidance of oil and gas facilities by other species of prairie grouse suggests new avenues for research to mitigate impacts of energy development.

Renewable energy

The Energy Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has in a series of projects gathered information and knowledge on renewable energy from various sources, both within and outside the academic world. In this article, we synthesize and summarize some of the main points on renewable energy from the various Energy Committee projects and the Committee's Energy 2050 symposium, regarding energy from water and wind, bioenergy, and solar energy. We further summarize the Energy Committee's scenario estimates of future renewable energy contributions to the global energy system, and other presentations given at the Energy 2050 symposium. In general, international coordination and investment in energy research and development is crucial to enable future reliance on renewable energy sources with minimal fossil fuel use.
