MANIPULATION OF THE DOSE-RESPONSE OF COMPOSITE GLOW PEAK 5 IN THE THERMOLUMINESCENCE OF LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) VIA OPTICAL EXCITATION POST-IRRADIATION: POTENTIAL FOR IMPROVED DOSE-RESPONSE LINEARITY BEYOND 1 Gy

Many dosimetric applications and especially those involved in clinical dosimetry are hampered by the supralinearity of TLD-100 which begins at a level of dose of 1 Gy. This research investigates the effect of optical excitation following irradiation on the dose-response. It is expected that this will lead to a more linear dose-response, however, irrespective of the hoped-for linearity, the theoretical/kinetic simulations of the effect of optical excitation will further enhance our understanding of the thermoluminescence mechanisms, especially the role of spatially correlated trapping and luminescent centers. In the following, the various stages carried out in these investigations are discussed and preliminary results presented.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE DOSIMETRIC FEATURES OF α-Al2O3:C,Mg AND α-Al2O3:C

A comparative study of the dosimetric features of α-Al2O3:C,Mg and α-Al2O3:C relevant to thermoluminescence dosimetry is reported. A glow curve of α-Al2O3:C,Mg measured at 1°C/s after beta irradiation to 1 Gy shows two subsidiary peaks at 42°C (labelled as I) and 72°C (II) and the main peak at 161°C (III) whereas a glow curve of α-Al2O3:C measured under the same conditions shows the main peak at 178°C (II') and a lower intensity peak at 48°C (I'). Apart from these ones, there are several other peaks at temperatures beyond that of the main peak in both α-Al2O3:C,Mg and α-Al2O3:C. However, the latter are not included in this study. We report a comparative quantitative analysis of dose response and fading of peaks I, II and III of α-Al2O3:C,Mg and peaks I' and II' of α-Al2O3:C. Analysis shows that the dose response of peaks I and III is sublinear within 1-10 Gy whereas that of peak II is superlinear within 1-4 Gy followed by a sublinear region within 4-10 Gy. In comparison, the dose response of peak I' is superlinear within 1-4 Gy followed by a sublinear region within 4-10 Gy whereas that of peak II' is sublinear within 1-4 Gy followed by a superlinear region within 4-10 Gy. As regards to fading corresponding to 1 Gy, peak I is very unstable and fades within 300 s, peak II is more stable and takes up to 43200 s to fade. In comparison, peak III fades down to 30% of its initial intensity within 2400 s. Interestingly, between 2400 and 800 s, the intensity fades by 17% only. Regarding fading in α-Al2O3:C, peak I' fades within 600 s whereas peak II' shows an inverse fading behaviour up to 64800 s. The rate of fading for peaks I, II and III in α-Al2O3:C,Mg was found to decrease with increase in dose. However, no such behaviour was observed in α-Al2O3:C. The fading in both samples is discussed on the basis of a charge hopping mechanism.

Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B, paracetamol and diclofenac sodium by supported titania-based catalysts from petrochemical residue: effect of doping with magnesium

Three different lots of a residual Ziegler-Natta catalyst slurry (bearing Ti and Mg) obtained from an industrial petrochemical plant were employed as sources for the photocatalyst supported on silica. The effect of additional magnesium (1.0-25.0 wt% Mg/SiO₂) on the photocatalytic properties of the doped materials was investigated. Doping the titania-based photocatalyst with Mg results in a shift in the absorption threshold toward the visible spectrum. The optical band gap energy of the bare supported photocatalyst was in the range of 2.5 eV and shifted to 1.72 eV after 25 wt% Mg doping. The systems were evaluated for the photodegradation of one dye (rhodamine B (RhB)) and two drugs (paracetamol and diclofenac sodium) either under ultraviolet (UV) (365 nm - UVA) or visible radiation, separately. Among the evaluated systems, doping with 25 wt% Mg afforded the highest degradation values for the target molecules under UV and visible radiation (i.e. 87%, 60% and 55% of the RhB, paracetamol and diclofenac under UV, respectively, and 82%, 48.3% and 48% under visible irradiation, respectively).

A method to minimise the fading effects of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-600 and TLD-700) using a pre-heat technique

Passive integrating dosemeters [thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)] are the only legally permitted individual dosemeters for occupational external radiation exposure monitoring in Korea. Also its maximum issuing cycle does not exceed 3 months, and the Korean regulations require personal dosemeters for official assessment of external radiation exposure to be issued by an approved or rather an accredited dosimetry service according to ISO/IEC 17025. KHNP (Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, LTD), a unique operating company of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Korea, currently has a plan to extend a TLD issuing cycle from 1 to 3 months under the authors' fading error criteria, ±10%. The authors have performed a feasibility study that minimises post-irradiation fading effects within their maximum reading cycle employing pre-heating technique. They repeatedly performed irradiation/reading a bare TLD chip to determine optimum pre-heating conditions by analysing each glow curve. The optimum reading conditions within the maximum reading cycle of 3 months were decided: a pre-heating temperature of 165°C, a pre-heating time of 9 s, a heating rate of 25°C s(-1), a reading temperature of 300°C and an acquisition time of 10 s. The fading result of TLD-600 and TLD-700 carried by newly developed time temperature profile (TTP) showed a much smaller fading effect than that of current TTP. The result showed that the fading error due to a developed TTP resulted in a ∼5% signal loss, whereas a current TTP caused a ∼15% loss. The authors also carried out a legal performance test on newly developed TTP to confirm its possibility as an official dosemeter. The legal performance tests that applied the developed TTP satisfied the criteria for all the test categories.

Further studies on the role of dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,Si thermoluminescent material

The 3-D thermoluminescence spectra and glow curves of LiF:Mg,Cu,Si, LiF:Mg,Cu, LiF:Mg,Si and LiF:Cu,Si with low concentrations of Mg and Cu were measured and were compared with those with high concentrations to investigate further the role of dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,Si material. The shape of glow curves of the four samples is similar; however, LiF:Cu,Si sample had no Mg dopant. It is concluded that the TL emission to be from self-trapped excitons in LiF, and this emission could be enhanced and altered by Mg, Cu and Si dopants in LiF:Mg,Cu,Si; all three dopants are necessary to obtain the bright TL emission and may be involved in the luminescence process; Mg seems to be the most essential dopant and Cu is involved in the trapping although the role of Mg dominates; both Cu and Si play a role in the main emission process and Cu also plays a role in reducing the emission around 610 nm.

Low- and high-frequency nonlinear acoustic phenomena in a magnesite

The results of experimental and theoretical studies of nonlinear acoustic phenomena (amplitude-dependent losses, resonant frequency shifts, damping of weak ultrasonic pulses and their carrier frequency phase delay under action of a powerful low-frequency pumping wave as well as amplitude-phase self-action of the finite-amplitude ultrasonic pulses) in a magnesite rod are presented. Analytical description of the observed phenomena was carried out within the frameworks of the phenomenological state equations that contain low-frequency hysteretic nonlinearity and both high-frequency dissipative and elastic nonlinearity. From comparison of experimental and analytical amplitude-frequency dependences of nonlinear phenomena, the values of magnesite acoustic nonlinearity parameters were determined. The frequency dependences have been discovered for hysteretic (in a range 3.6-17.2 kHz) as well as dissipative and elastic nonlinearity (in a range 50-370 kHz).

Oxidation-extraction spectrometry of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by chlorophyllin magnesium (Chl-Mg) under ultrasonic irradiation

In order to examine the mechanism and process of sonodynamic reaction, the chlorophyllin magnesium (Chl-Mg) acting as a sonosensitizer was irradiated by ultrasound, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected by the method of oxidation-extraction spectrometry (OES). That is, under ultrasonic irradiation in the presence of Chl-Mg, the 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) is oxidized by generated ROS into 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO), which can be extracted by mixed organic solvent and display a obvious visible absorption at 563 nm wavelength. Besides, the generation conditions of ROS were also reviewed. The results demonstrated that the quantities of generated ROS increased with the increase of ultrasonic irradiation time, Chl-Mg concentration and DPCI concentration. Finally, several radical scavengers (l-Histidine (His), 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-methylphenol (BHT) and Vitamin C (VC)) were used to determine the kind of the generated ROS. It was found that at least the hydroxyl radical (OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were generated in the presence of Chl-Mg under ultrasonic irradiation. It is wish that this paper might offer some valuable references for the study on the mechanism of SDT and the application of Chl-Mg in tumor treatment.

Development of hierarchical magnesium composites using hybrid microwave sintering

In this work, hierarchical magnesium based composites with a micro-architecture comprising reinforcing constituent that is a composite in itself were fabricated using powder metallurgy route including microwave assisted rapid sintering technique and hot extrusion. Different level-I composite particles comprises sub-micron pure aluminum (Al) matrix containing Al2O3 particles of different length scale (from micrometer to nanometer size). Microstructural characterization of the hierarchical composites revealed reasonably uniform distribution of level-I composite particles and significant grain refinement compared to monolithic Mg. Hierarchical composite configurations exhibited different mechanical performance as a function of Al2O3 length scale. Among the different hierarchical formulations synthesized, the hierarchical configuration with level-I composition comprising Al and nano-Al2O3 (0.05 microm) exhibited the highest improvement in tensile yield strength (0.2% YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), tensile failure strain (FS), compressive yield strength (0.2% CYS) and ultimate compressive strength (UCS) (+96%, +80%, +42%, +80%, and +83%) as compared to monolithic Mg. An attempt has been made in the present study to correlate the effect of different length scales of Al2O3 particulates on the microstructural and mechanical response of magnesium.

High energy quasi-phase matched optical parametric oscillation using Mg-doped congruent LiTaO(3) crystal

We report on high energy optical parametric oscillation of 118 mJ output with ~70% slope efficiency in 10 ns duration of 30 Hz operation by using Mg-doped congruent composition LiTaO(3) (MgLT). The periodically poled MgLT device with ~30 microm period for quasi-phase matching (QPM) in 5-mm-thick crystal are prepared. MgLT crystal could become a candidate for high-energy and higher durability material of QPM device, compared to conventional Mg-doped congruent composition LiNbO(3).

Metastable Magnesium fluorescence spectroscopy using a frequency-stabilized 517 nm laser

We present a laser operating at 517 nm for our Magnesium laser-cooling and atomic clock project. A two-stage Yb-doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) system generates more than 1.5 W of 1034 nm light when seeded with a 15 mW diode laser. Using a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, we obtained more than 40 mW of 517 nm output power by single pass frequency doubling. In addition, fluorescence spectroscopy of metastable magnesium atoms could be used to stabilize the 517 nm laser to an absolute frequency within 1 MHz.

Long-term fade study of the DT-702 LiF: Mg,Cu,P TLD

LiF thermoluminescent dosemeters (TLDs) are used by the US Navy to record radiation exposure of personnel. The Model DT-648 LiF:Mg,Ti TLD has been replaced by a new Model DT-702 LiF:Mg,Cu,P TLD. The DT-648 was used for many years and has undergone extensive testing to identify its pre- and post-irradiation fade operating characteristics. Studies have shown that the addition of copper increases the thermoluminesence sensitivity of the TLD for improved low-level radiation monitoring. This study evaluates various fading characteristics of the new copper-doped dosemeter using current equipment for processing of TLDs and calibrating to a National Institute of Standards and Technology standard source. The 57-week study took place at the Naval Dosimetry Center, Bethesda, MD, USA. TLDs were stored for various lengths of time before and after being exposed to a National Institute of Standards and Technology calibrated radiation sources. TLDs were then processed using current US Navy instructions and the resulting dose compared with the calibrated exposure. Both loss of signal and loss of sensitivity were evaluated. The results of this study have shown that the DT-702 TLD has no statistically significant change in sensitivity or change in signal with up to 57 weeks of pre- or post-irradiation time. The results of this study will increase the accuracy of exposure record keeping for the Navy and will allow longer issue periods. This will increase flexibility with international and domestic shipping procedures, as well as reduce workload requirements for dosimetry processing.

Pyridyne radical cations produced by photodissociation of Mg˙+(multifluoro-pyridine) complexes: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Gas phase complexes Mg*+ (2,6-difluoropyridine) (1) and Mg*+ (pentafluoropyridine) (2) have been subjected to photodissociation in the spectral range of approximately 230-440 nm. Except for the evaporative photofragment Mg*+ , the primary photoproduct for is C(5)H(3)N*(+), which is associated with the rupture of two C-F bonds by the photoexcited Mg*+ , forming very stable MgF(2). In contrast, the direct loss of MgF(+) is more favorable for due to fluorine substitution. Given enough energy, C(5)H(3)N*(+) can undergo decomposition to form C(4)H(2)*(+) and HCN. These results are very different from those for Mg*+ (2-fluoropyridine), highlighting the significance of the additional F at C6 of and . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been employed to examine the geometries and energetics of the complexes as well as relevant reaction mechanisms. All of the complexes feature the direct attachment of Mg*+ to the N atom. The key intermediate is found to be FMg(+) (C(5)H(x)F(4-x)N) (x = 3 or 0), which can lead to the formation of MgF(+) directly or MgF(2) through activation of another C-F bond adjacent to N, producing the pyridyne radical cations. However, hydrogen-transfer prior to the rupture of the second C-F bond followed by ring-opening of C(5)H(3)N*(+) may result in the formation of chain forms of C(5)H(3)N*(+). The influence of the fluorine substitution on the competition of the two routes have been demonstrated.

The effects of ionisation density on the glow curve structure of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100): the behaviour of composite glow peak 5 in 'slow-cooled' material

The effects of ionisation density on the structure of the glow curve of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) are briefly reviewed and discussed within the framework of the spatially correlated TC/LC model and localised recombination. The effects of 'slow-cooling' on the structure of composite peak 5 following low-ionisation density beta/gamma irradiation are described and analysed in both 'slow-cooled' and 'normally cooled' samples. It is demonstrated that 'slow-cooling' using a cooling rate of 30 degrees C h(-1) increases the relative intensity of glow peak 5a to composite glow peak 5 from approximately 0.1 to approximately 2, thereby greatly improving the precision of measurement of the ratio 5a/5. The improved precision removes a hurdle impeding the development of the ionisation density discrimination properties of the peak 5a/5 nanodosimeter.

New Al2O3:C,Mg crystals for radiophotoluminescent dosimetry and optical imaging

Optical and dosimetric properties of a new radiophotoluminescent material based on aluminum oxide doped with carbon and magnesium (Al2O3:C,Mg) and having aggregate oxygen vacancy defects are presented. The Al2O3:C,Mg crystals are characterized by several new optical absorption and emission bands. It is suggested that the main optical properties of this material are due to the formation of aggregate defects composed of two oxygen vacancies and two Mg-impurity atoms. Radiation-induced optical absorption bands are centered at 335 and 620 nm and produce fluorescent emission at 750 nm with a 75 +/- 5 ns lifetime. The dose measurements are performed by illumination of the Al2O3:C,Mg crystal with 335 nm or 650 nm light and by measuring the intensity of the 750 nm fluorescence. The detector material is insensitive to room light before and after the irradiation and the traps are stable up to 600 degrees C. A dose measurement range between 5 mGy and 200 Gy, suitable for therapeutic radiology applications, was demonstrated. The short luminescent lifetime and nondestructive readout is favorable for imaging applications.

Low temperature radioluminescence of LiF:Mg,Cu,P

Low temperature radioluminescence spectra of LiF, variously co-doped with Mg, Cu and P, show highly unusual temperature dependencies which resemble thermoluminescence data. The signals include intense peaks and a relatively weak continuous background. One peak occurs below 30 K, together with a major peak near 125 K. The signals are highly sensitive to the dopants and slightly sensitive to X-ray dose rate. The role of donor acceptor pairs and the perturbations from intrinsic defects formed by ionisation can be used to describe all the observations. The 290 nm emission band is linked to H center annealing.

Optical excitation of LiF:Mg,Ti following alpha and beta irradiation

It is demonstrated experimentally that optical excitation of irradiated LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) by 4 eV photons has the same effect for both alpha particle (high-ionisation density) irradiation and photon/electron irradiation. In both cases, peak 5a converts to peak 4 causing peak 4 to increase following the bleach. Such an observation is consistent with the major premise of track structure theory that radiation effects following heavy changed particle (HCP)/neutron irradiation are due exclusively to the interaction of the secondary electrons created by the HCP slowing down.

Comparison of two extremity dosemeters based on LiF:Mg,Cu,P thin detectors for mixed beta-gamma fields

Two types of thin LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors, GR-200F and MCP-Ns, have been characterised for use in the design of an extremity dosemeter for mixed beta-photon radiation fields. Both detectors consist of an extremely thin layer of sensitive material with effective thicknesses of 5 and 8 mg cm(-2), respectively, held in a 5 mg cm(-2) PVC ring holder. Dosimetric performance was analysed according to the ISO 12794 standard and compared with 240 mg cm(-2) TLD-100 measurements. In particular, the energy response was obtained for ISO narrow X-ray spectra, (137)Cs, (60)Co, (204)Tl and (90)Sr/(90)Y. From these measurements a mean calibration factor was calculated to estimate H(p)(0.07). Subsequently, the performance of the dosemeters was checked for a set of 10 different mixed photon and beta-photon fields. The study shows that the proposed dosemeters can estimate H(p)(0.07) in a wide range of mixed beta-photon fields with a maximum deviation from the given dose of 30% and an overall uncertainty of the order of 25% (k = 1). However, the results also highlight a large variability among the different thin detectors and, thus, the standard TLD-100 material is recommended whenever the workplace does not include low-energy beta radiation.

Confocal fluorescent imaging of tracks from heavy charged particles utilising new Al2O3:C,Mg crystals

A completely optical, non-destructive imaging of tracks in a fluorescent crystal provides a new way to detect and to assess doses from heavy charged particles and neutrons. The technique combines confocal fluorescent microscopy with a new radiation-sensitive, luminescent material based on aluminium oxide single crystals doped with carbon, magnesium and having aggregate oxygen vacancy defects (Al2O3:C,Mg). Radiation-induced colour centres in the new material have an absorption band at 620 nm and produce fluorescence at 750 nm with a high quantum yield and a short, 75 +/- 5 ns, fluorescence lifetime. Three-dimensional spatial distribution of fluorescent intensity allows one to obtain depth-dose distributions and to discriminate between high- and low-linear energy transfer radiations. Images of single tracks produced by different types of radiation have been obtained. Irradiations with a calibrated 241Am alpha source showed high efficiency for track detection. Thermal neutrons were detected using a nuclear reaction with a 6LiF radiator and production of alpha particles and tritium ions. Fast neutrons were detected using recoil protons produced in a polyethylene radiator installed in front of the crystalline detector. Three-dimensional reconstruction of a recoil proton propagating through the crystal was demonstrated.

Search for ionisation density effects in the radiation absorption stage in LiF:Mg,Ti

Optical absorption (OA) dose-response of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) is studied as a function of electron energy (ionisation density) and irradiation dose. Contrary to the situation in thermoluminescence dose-response where the supralinearity is strongly energy-dependent, no dependence of the OA dose filling constants on energy is observed. This result is interpreted as indicating a lack of competitive process in the radiation absorption stage. The lack of an energy dependence of the dose filling constant also suggests that the charge carrier migration distances are sufficiently large to smear out the differences in the non-uniform distribution of ionisation events created by the impinging gamma/electron radiation of various energies.

Energy response of a two-dimensional sheet-type LiF:Mg,Cu,P TL dosemeter to photons

A 2-D tissue-equivalent sheet-type dosemeter (NTL sheet) was developed using thermoluminescent material of LiF:Mg,Cu,P (NTL-250). The energy responses of the NTL sheet and NTL-250 powder were measured with 10-150 keV monoenergetic photons from synchrotron radiation at SPring-8. The sample was irradiated by a rotational method for the uniform irradiation with the narrow beam. Linearity of the NTL-250 was confirmed up to 2 Gy. Energy responses of the NTL sheet and NTL-250 powder were close to that of soft tissue. On the other hand, the BaSO(4) sheet, which has been used practically, showed the response that the sensitivity approximately 60 keV was 100 times higher than that for (60)Co gamma rays. Therefore the NTL sheet can be said to have excellent properties for dose measurements.

LiF:Mg,Cu,P glow curve shape dependence on heating rate

The glow curve shape of LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP) material is studied in this research. The study is focused on the effects of the heating rate on the dosimetric peaks. Different configurations of dosemeters (chips, cards and powder) are studied. The shifting of the dominant dosimetric peak is observed and analysed. The curves are deconvoluted using the new Harshaw Glow Curve Analyser (GCA) program. Results of the study are presented, as well as possible explanations as to the observed effects.

Properties of the 4.45 eV optical absorption band in LiF:Mg,Ti

The optical absorption (OA) and thermoluminescence (TL) of dosimetric LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) as well as nominally pure LiF single crystal have been studied as a function of irradiation dose, thermal and optical bleaching in order to investigate the role of the 4.45 eV OA band in low temperature TL. Computerised deconvolution was used to resolve the absorption spectrum into individual gaussian bands and the TL glow curve into glow peaks. Although the 4.45 eV OA band shows thermal decay characteristics similar to the 4.0 eV band its dose filling constant and optical bleaching properties suggest that it cannot be associated with the TL of composite peaks 4 or 5. Its presence in optical grade single crystal LiF further suggests that it is an intrinsic defect or possibly associated with chance impurities other than Mg, Ti.

The application of LiF:Mg,Cu,P to large scale personnel dosimetry: current status and future directions

LiF:Mg,Cu,P is starting to replace LiF:Mg,Ti in a variety of personnel dosimetry applications. LiF:Mg,Cu,P has superior characteristics as compared to LiF:Mg,Ti including, higher sensitivity, improved energy response for photons, lack of supralinearity and insignificant fading. The use of LiF:Mg,Cu,P in large scale dosimetry programs is of particular interest due to the extreme sensitivity of this material to the maximum readout temperature, and the variety of different dosimetry aspects and details that must be considered for a successful implementation in routine dosimetry. Here we discuss and explain the various aspects of large scale LiF:Mg,Cu,P based dosimetry programs including the properties of the TL material, new generation of TLD readers, calibration methodologies, a new generation of dose calculation algorithms based on the use of artificial neural networks and the overall uncertainty of the dose measurement. The United States Navy (USN) will be the first US dosimetry processor who will use this new material for routine applications. Until June 2002, the Navy used two types of thermoluminescent materials for personnel dosimetry, CaF2:Mn and LiF:Mg,Ti. A program to upgrade the system and to implement LiF:Mg,Cu,P, started in the mid 1990s and was recently concluded. In 2002, the new system replaced the LiF:Mg,Ti and is scheduled to start replacing the CaF2:Mn system in 2006. A pilot study to determine the dosimetric performance of the new LiF:Mg,Cu,P based dosimetry system was recently completed, and the results show the new system to be as good or better than the current system in all areas tested. As a result, LiF:Mg,Cu,P is scheduled to become the primary personnel dosimeter for the entire US Navy in 2006.

The dose-response of Harshaw TLD-700H

Harshaw TLD-700H (7LiF:Mg,Cu,P) was previously characterised for low- to high-dose ranges from 1 microGy to 20 Gy. This paper describes the studies and results of dose-response and linearity at much higher doses. TLD-700H is a near perfect dosimetric material with near tissue equivalence, flat energy response, and the ability to measure beta, gamma and X rays. These new results extend the applicability of Harshaw TLD-700H into more dosimetric measurement environments. The simple glow curve structure provides insignificant fade, eliminating special oven preparation methods experienced by other materials. The work presented in this paper quantifies the performance of Harshaw TLD-700H in extended ranges.

Response of LiF:Mg,Ti to low energy carbon and oxygen ions

The extended track interaction model (ETIM) has been formulated to explain the TL-fluence response for peak 5 to heavy ions using radial dose distributions produced by the ions in LiF and their luminescent centre occupation probability distributions. In this work, an experimental study of the TLD-100 fluence response to carbon and oxygen ions and its interpretation in terms of a Monte Carlo simulation of ETIM applied to peak 5 are presented. Irradiations were performed with 7.34 and 10.3 MeV 12C and 8.34 MeV 16O ions in the fluence interval between 2 x 10(7) and 2 x 10(11) cm(-2). Individual glow curve responses show the expected increase of supralinearity as the peak temperature increases. Data for peak 5 show a weak dependence with energy. These latter results are difficult to understand when one considers the differences in the expected radial occupancies for different ion energies.

On neutron-gamma mixed field dosimetry with LiF:Mg,Ti at radiation protection dose levels

The possibility of using the specific responses of the high temperature Peaks 6 and 7 and Peaks 4 and 5 to different LET radiations was mentioned in the past mainly for very high doses. The applicability of the two regions method for thermal neutrons--gamma ray mixed field dosimetry was investigated by analysing the response of LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters irradiated to different ratios of thermal neutrons and gamma rays at radiation protection dose levels encountered in routine work conditions, up to approximately 50 mSv. The Region of Interest method was used to define the areas of the Peaks 4 + 5 and 6 + 7. We found that a simple algorithm can be used to determine with good accuracy the separate contributions of neutron and gamma doses.

Thermoluminescence emission spectra for the LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si thermoluminescent materials with various concentrations of the dopants (3-D measurement)

The thermoluminescence (TL) emission spectra from LiF TL materials, called KLT-300 (LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si) with various dopant concentrations are measured and analysed. These KLT-300 materials were developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to achieve an enhancement of the thermal stability in TL readings. Six types of samples are prepared with different dopant concentrations in the following ranges; Mg (0-0.20 mol%), Cu (0-0.05 mol%), Na and Si (0-0.9 mol%). The spectra measurements are carried out for the six types of samples using a TL emission spectra measurement device. The spectra measurement device consists of a monochromator, photomultiplier tube and temperature control unit to thermally stimulate the samples. The measured data shows the light emission during heating of the sample as a function of temperature and wavelength (three-dimensional TL spectra). The spectra were analysed using a method of deconvolution based on gaussian curve. The wavelength of a main peak of the emission spectra changes depending on the existence of the Cu dopant, while intensity of the spectra rapidly changes with the Cu dopant concentrations. The 385 nm emission is mainly observed in all the spectra from the samples with the Cu dopant, but in those from the samples without the Cu dopant a very weak 401 nm emission is mainly observed. However, any change in the wavelength at a main peak of the TL emission spectra from the sample materials with Na and Si dopants is not observed but that in the intensity at a peak of the spectra is observed.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of the f(D)max-(S/S0)max anomaly in LiF:Mg,Ti

Previous investigations in the framework of the Unified Interaction Model (UNIM) have demonstrated the difficulty in theoretically predicting both f(D)max and [S(Ds)/S(0)]max with the same set of UNIM parameters. This anomaly is re-investigated and an alternative explanation, based on experimental measurements combined with UNIM analysis, is given. This explanation is based on the assumption that N(LC), the total number of available luminescent centres is changed by the sensitisation dose or anneal or both. Allowing N(LC) to increase as the sensitisation dose is increased, a good fit to both f(D) and S(Ds)/S0 is obtained.

Determination of LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P TL efficiency for X-rays and their application to Monte Carlo simulations of dosemeter response

The simulation of response of a new passive area dosemeter for measuring ambient dose equivalent H*(10) for photons has been performed using the Monte Carlo code MCNP and experimentally determined responses of LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P thermoluminescent (TL) detectors for hard-filtered X-ray spectra from 20 to 300 keV and for 137Cs and 60Co gamma radiation. Relative TL efficiency for both types of detectors, determined in experiments with bare detectors and similar Monte Carlo simulations, compared favourably with prediction of microdosimetric models for proposed microdosimetric target sizes in the range of 20-40 nm. The concluding verification experiment showed small deviations between measured and simulated dosemeter energy response values in the range of a few percent.

Measurements of the optical density and the thermoluminescent response of LiF:Mg,Ti exposed to high doses of 60Co gamma rays

The absorption spectra and glow curves of LiF:Mg,Ti exposed to high doses of 60Co gamma rays as well as the optical density curves and thermoluminescent (TL) response as a function of dose were measured. Absorption peaks around 442 nm (2.8 eV), 307 nm (4.0 eV) and 248 nm (5.0 eV) were observed. The optical density is a linear function of dose up to 2500 Gy and then sublinear for the 5.0 eV band, and for the 4.0 eV band it is sublinear with a filling constant of 2.1 x 10(-4) and 6.2 x 10(-4) Gy(-1). The dose response of the 2.8 eV band is linear from 2500 Gy to 10 kGy with a slope of 1.0 x 10(-5) Gy(-1). Once the absorption spectra were obtained, the glow curves and the TL response were obtained. In the dose range, 290-10,000 Gy, the TL response of peaks 5 and 7 was supralinear-sublinear.

Time-resolved spectroscopy of LiF:Mg,Cu,P

Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements of LiF:Mg,Cu,P luminescence are presented to obtain a better understanding of the emission characteristics of this material. The intensities and decay of the emission bands were studied as a function of annealing temperature and ionising radiation (gamma) dose. Two peaks in the emission were observed at 367 and 466 nm when excited by the 266 nm laser radiation. The luminescence spectrum under band-to-band X-ray excitation shows a dominant emission approximately 390-400 nm, which resembles the reported thermoluminescence emission and is clearly different from the spectrum obtained using the 266 nm pulsed laser excitation. Annealing of the material to 300 degrees C increases the intensity of the 367 and 466 nm emission bands by an order of magnitude as well as changes the relative intensity of the bands. Additional emission bands, which are not evident in the thermoluminescence emission spectra, are seen at longer wavelengths that also increase with dose. Possible explanations for the observed emission spectra are discussed in this paper.

The effect of oscillating low intensity magnetic field on the Na+, K+, Ca++, and Mg++ concentrations in the maternal and fetal circulation of the dually perfused human placental cotyledon

Dual-sided perfusions of the human placental cotyledon in vitro were used to study effects of low intensity magnetic fields (MFs) of 2 mT, 50 Hz (E1, 10 perfusions) and 5 mT, 50 Hz (E2, 10 perfusions). In the control group C (10 experiments) no field was used. Perfusions lasted 180 min each. Increased release of calcium ions from the placental cotyledon was found in the fetal circulation during perfusion when the 2 mT, 50 Hz MF was used. No changes in the release of sodium and magnesium ions were observed compared to the control group. The 5 mT, 50 Hz oscillating MF intensified the release of sodium ions from the perfused cotyledon both to the fetal and maternal circulation up to the 150th min of the experiment. Increased release of magnesium ions was observed only to the fetal circulation between 120 and 180 min and of calcium ions to the fetal circulation between 60 and 180 min. No significant differences in K concentrations were found between the control and MF exposed cotyledons under conditions of these experiments.

On fading corrections for LiF:Mg,Ti irradiated by thermal neutrons

The phenomena of preirradiation and postirradiation fading of LiF:Mg,Ti phosphors are considered a significant practical problem in routine dosimetry because of the uncertainties introduced, especially for mixed neutron-gamma dosimetry, as different fading corrections may be necessary for the gamma and neutron contributions. We have investigated if the region of interest (ROI) method is applicable to minimizing the fading effect for thermal neutron irradiation as it is for gamma irradiation. By employing the ROI method, which consists of integration between channel 31 below the glow curve maximum and channel 16 above the glow curve maximum, a constant dose value was obtained for the period of 90 d. Thus, by employing the ROI method, a fading independent evaluation of the thermal neutron dose can be made.

Thermoluminescence dosimetry of a thermal neutron field and comparison with Monte Carlo calculations

The characteristics of thermoluminescence dosemeters (TLDs) regarding the determination of photon and neutron absorbed doses were investigated in a thermal neutron beam. Harshaw TLD-100 (LiF:Mg,Ti) and TLD-700 (7LiF:Mg,Ti) were compared with similar materials from Solid Dosimetric Detector and Method Laboratory (People's Republic of China). Harshaw TLD-700H (7LiF:Mg,Cu,P) and aluminium oxide (Al2O3:Mg,Y) from Hungary were also considered for photon dose measurement. The neutron sensitivity of the investigated materials was measured and found to be consistent with values reported by other authors. A comparison was made between the TL dose measurements and results obtained via conventional methods. An agreement within 20% was obtained, which demonstrates the ability of TLD for measuring neutron and photon doses in a mixed field, using careful calibration procedures and determining the neutron sensitivity for the usage conditions.

Response components of LiF:Mg,Ti around a moderated Am-Be neutron source

The responses of TLD-1010, TLD-700 and TLD-600 thermoluminescence dosemeters to the radiation field inside a water tank enclosing an isotopic 241Am-Be neutron source are analysed. Separate contributions coming from thermal neutrons, neutrons with energies above thermal and gamma rays to the total response of the three types of TLD are obtained. This is accomplished by assuming that the gamma responses for materials with different 6Li enrichments are identical and that the neutron response of TLD-700 is negligible compared to TLD-100 and TLD-600. The last assumption is tested by Monte Carlo simulations of the neutron energy spectrum at the points where the TLDs are irradiated.

The unified interaction model applied to LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100): properties of the luminescent and competitive centres during sensitisation

An attempt is made to predict/interpret theoretically the experimentally measured values of f(D) and S(Ds)/So for composite peak 5 in TLD-100. using the Unified Interaction Model (UNIM) with identical values of the UNIM parameters for both sets of experimental data. Although an excellent fit can be obtained to the experimental f(D) data over the entire dose region where f(D) is greater than unity. i.e. from 5 Gy to several thousand Gy, a satisfactory fit to both sets of data is found to require different values for at least one of the parameters. The lack of success in fining f(D) and S(Ds)/So with the same values of all the parameters, suggests that the sensitisation anneal (particularly the duration of the anneal) may somehow change the structure (S(LC)) and/or the total number of available LCs in an unknown manner.

[The effect of ionizing radiation on the Mg2(+)-binding proteins of thymocyte plasma membranes]

The effect of ionizing radiation at doses 10, 10(2), 10(3) and 10(4) Gy on Mg(2+)-binding plasma membrane proteins in thymocytes was studied. Marked changes in the Mg(2+)-binding protein structure-dynamic organization at doses above 10(3) Gy were found.

Empirical test of an ion parametric resonance model for magnetic field interactions with PC-12 cells

A companion paper describes a predictive ion parametric resonance (IPR) model of magnetic field interactions with biological systems based on a selective relation between the ratio of the flux density of the static magnetic field to the AC magnetic field and the charge-to-mass ratio of ions of biological relevance. Previous studies demonstrated that nerve growth factor (NGF)-stimulated neurite outgrowth (NO) in PC-12 cells can be inhibited by exposure to magnetic fields as a function of either magnetic field flux density or AC magnetic field frequency. The present work examines whether the PC-12 cell response to magnetic fields is consistent with the quasi-periodic, resonance-based predictions of the IPR model. We tested changes in each of the experimentally controllable variables [flux densities of the parallel components of the AC magnetic field (Bac) and the static magnetic field (Bdc) and the frequency of the AC magnetic field] over a range of exposure conditions sufficient to determine whether the IPR model is applicable. A multiple-coil exposure system independently controlled each of these critical quantities. The perpendicular static magnetic field was controlled to less than 2 mG for all tests. The first set of tests examined the NO response in cells exposed to 45 Hz Bac from 77 to 468 mG(rms) at a Bdc of 366 mG. Next, we examined an off-resonance condition using 20 mG Bdc with a 45 Hz AC field across a range of Bac between 7.9 and 21 mG(rms). Finally, we changed the AC frequency to 25 Hz, with a corresponding change in Bdc to 203 mG (to tune for the same set of ions as in the first test) and a Bac range from 78 to 181 mG(rms). In all cases the observed responses were consistent with predictions of the IPR model. These experimental results are the first to support in detail the validity of the fundamental relationships embodied in the IPR model.

[The effect of photoexcitation of the electron shell of calcium and magnesium atoms on the ATPase activity]

Influence of visible light on Mg-ATPase and Ca-ATPase activity of thymocytes plasma membranes was investigated. It has been shown that illumination of the membranes at lambda = 518 nm 1.8 times increased Mg-ATPase activity and illumination at lambda = 445.5 nm 1.9 times increased Ca-ATPase activity.

The dose rate effects on the in vitro radiolysis products of magnesium-guanosine-5'-monophosphate complexes in aqueous solutions

This study examined the effects on the radiolysis of magnesium-guanosine-5'-monophosphate complexes in deaerated aqueous solutions, investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. It was found that when the system was irradiated with a dose rate of 500 rad/min (low dose rate), the OH radicals, H atoms and hydrated electrons (eaq-) produced from radiolysis of water reacted mainly by addition to the double bonds C4 = C5 and N7 = C8 of guanine. When the dose rate was 23,800 rad/min (high dose rate) the electrons reacted further with the complex by addition to the carbonyl group, C6 = O, of guanine.

[Effect of acetylcholine and histamine on electrolyte and catecholamine content of vessel walls exposed to x-rays and cystamine]

Experiments on adult rats have shown that a single rectal x-ray irradiation is accompanied by a decrease in the content of adrenaline, noradrenaline and potassium and by a increase in sodium and calcium concentration in vascular tissue. The degree of these shifts depends on the time elapsed after exposure to x-rays. X-Ray injury produces specific changes in the biochemical response of the vascular wall to different doses of acetylcholine and histamine during varying times of x-ray-induced pathology. Pretreatment (before irradiation) with radioprotectors (cistamine) lowers the damaging effect of radiation and promotes the normalization of the vascular tissue response to the administration of mediator agents.
