Abstract
Endometrial cancer (EC) is one of the most common malignancy of the female genital tract. Patients with metastatic disease have a poor prognosis. So far, however, the underlying molecular mechanisms of EC metastasis are largely unknown. P21-activated kinase 4 (Pak4) is important in cell motility and oncogenesis. Here we investigated a role of Pak4 in EC cell migration and invasion. Pak4 overexpression was observed in multiple human EC cell lines. In clinical samples, expression of total and phosphorylated Pak4 (Pak4 and p-Pak4, respectively) increased significantly with progression of EC from normal tissue to lymph node metastasis; both were positively correlated with depth of myometrial and vascular space invasion, lymph nodes metastasis, and poor histological differentiation. In two human EC cell lines, Pak4 overexpression promoted cell migration and invasion in vitro. Short hairpin RNA (shRNA)-mediated stable knockdown of Pak4 inhibited the metastatic potential of EC in an ERK1/2-MMP-2-dependent manner. These results suggest that Pak4 is an important regulator of EC cell migration and invasion. Therefore, Pak4 may be a promising target for the treatment of metastatic EC.

Abstract
The measurement of J/ψ azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured J/ψ elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/ψ particles with relatively large transverse momenta are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although patients with chronic schizophrenia have substantially higher smoking rates than either the general population or patients with other mental illnesses, drug-naive patients with a first episode of schizophrenia have received little systemic study. This study examined smoking rates, the association between smoking and symptom severity and cognitive function in Chinese first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients using cross-sectional and case-control designs. METHOD Two hundred and forty-four drug-naive FES patients and 256 healthy controls matched for gender, age and education completed the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Patients were also rated on the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS). RESULTS The rate and quantity of smoking were not significantly higher among FES patients compared to the general population. Among patients, smokers scored higher than non-smokers on the total PANSS and the positive symptom subscale scores. There were no significant associations between cognitive function and smoking in either FES patients or healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS In contrast to studies in patients with chronic schizophrenia, drug-naive FES patients did not smoke more frequently than the general population. Furthermore, patients with psychotic disorders who smoked did not exhibit significant cognitive differences compared with those who did not smoke. However, smoking may have other detrimental effects on physical and mental health, for example on positive symptoms.

Abstract
The effect of bisphenol A (BPA) on the reproductive system is highly debated but has been associated with meiotic abnormalities. However, evidence is lacking with regard to the mechanisms involved. In order to explore the underlying mechanisms of BPA-induced meiotic abnormalities in adult male rats, we exposed 9-week-old male Wistar rats to BPA by gavage at 0, 2, 20 or 200 μg/kg body weight (bw)/day for 60 consecutive days. 17β-Estradiol (E2) was administered at 10 μg/kg bw/day as the estrogenic positive control. Treatments with 200 μg/kg bw/day of BPA and E2 significantly decreased sperm counts and inhibited spermiation, characterized by an increase in stage VII and decrease in stage VIII in the seminiferous epithelium. This was concomitant with a disruption in the progression of meiosis I and the persistence of meiotic DNA strand breaks in pachytene spermatocytes, and the ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated and checkpoint kinase 2 signal pathway was also activated; Eventually, germ cell apoptosis was triggered as evaluated by terminal dUTP nick-end labeling assay and western blot for caspase 3. Using the estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 182780, we determined that ER signaling mediated BPA-induced meiotic disruption and reproductive impairment. Our results suggest that ER signaling-mediated meiotic disruption may be a major contributor to the molecular events leading to BPA-related male reproductive disorders. These rodent data support the growing association between BPA exposure and the rapid increase in the incidence of male reproductive disorders.

Abstract
It was recently discovered that the low-temperature, charge-ordered phase of 1T-TiSe(2) has a chiral character. This unexpected chirality in a system described by a scalar order parameter could be explained in a model where the emergence of relative phase shifts between three charge density wave components breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice. Here, we present experimental evidence for the sequence of phase transitions predicted by that theory, going from disorder to nonchiral and finally to chiral charge order. Employing x-ray diffraction, specific heat, and electrical transport measurements, we find that a novel phase transition occurs ~7 K below the main charge ordering transition in TiSe(2), in agreement with the predicted hierarchy of charge-ordered phases.

Abstract
Elliptic flow (v(2)) values for identified particles at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions, measured by the STAR experiment in the beam energy scan at RHIC at sqrt[s(NN)] = 7.7-62.4 GeV, are presented. A beam-energy-dependent difference of the values of v(2) between particles and corresponding antiparticles was observed. The difference increases with decreasing beam energy and is larger for baryons compared to mesons. This implies that, at lower energies, particles and antiparticles are not consistent with the universal number-of-constituent-quark scaling of v(2) that was observed at sqrt[s(NN)] = 200 GeV.

Abstract
Schistosome worms inhabit mammalian mesenteric veins. Their eggs cause chronic inflammation, which progresses to periportal fibrosis in 5 to 30% of cases, increasing portal blood pressure and leading to esophageal varices. Episodes of bleeding cause hepatic necrosis and may ultimately lead to hepatic failure and the death of the patient. Schistosome infections can also cause pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. The mechanisms of fibrogenesis and fibrolysis are beginning to be unraveled, but it remains unclear why disease occurs only in certain subjects, as also observed for other types of chronic liver inflammation, as in hepatitis C or B. We summarize here the results that showed that fibrosis progression is determined by a genetic locus on chromosome 6. The CCN2 gene at this locus, encodes CTGF that is a crucial regulator of fibrosis. Two groups of CCN2 polymorphisms independently modulate the progression of hepatic fibrosis. These results were obtained in an Asian population, but were extended to humans living in Africa and South America and are presently tested in liver fibrosis of other etiological origins.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the expression of regulatory T cells and helper T cells in peripheral blood of patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients hospitalized with PIH were consecutively collected for detection of regulatory T cells (CD4+ CD25+ Treg and CD4+ CD25+ Foxp3+Treg) and helper T (CD+3, CD+4, CD+8, CD+4/CD+8) cells in peripheral blood. Meanwhile, 20 normal hospitalized pregnant women served as the control group. RESULTS In the comparison of regulatory T cells, the level of serum CD4+ CD25+ Treg and CD4+ CD25+ Foxp3+Treg in PIH group was significantly lower than control group (all p < 0.05). In the comparison of help T cells, the expression level of serum CD+4/CD+8 in PIH group was obviously higher than control group, while the expression level of CD+8 was significantly lower than control group (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS There were obvious abnormal expressions of regulatory T cell and helper T cells in peripheral blood of patients with PIH.

Abstract
A spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of total selenium in biological samples has been developed. After oxidative destruction, the sample is reacted with a mixture of bromide and 2,3-diamino-1,4-dibromonaphthalene (Br(2)-DAN) without pH adjustment. Selenium(VI) is rapidly reduced by bromide to Se(IV) which then forms 4,7-dibromo-5,6-benzopiazselenol (Br(2)-DAN-Se). The conversion of Se(VI) to Br(2)-DAN-Se is completed in 6 min at 100 degrees C. The piazselenol is extracted to cyclohexane and the fluorescence measured at 577 nm with excitation at 518 nm. The procedure has been validated by determinations on reference materials with selenium concentrations ranging from 4 to 1460 ng g(-1). The advantages of the method are the fast reduction of Se(VI) by hydrobromic acid and the properties of Br(2)-DAN, which permit the piazselenol formation to be carried out in a strongly acidic medium and at high temperature. The limit of detection is 0.6 ng g(-1) as estimated by three times the standard deviation of the blank determination (n = 7). The rate of reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV) in hydrobromic acid was investigated as a function of concentration and temperature. The new kinetic data together with previous kinetic and equilibrium data for the piazselenol formation were used to model and optimize the simultaneous reduction-derivatization procedure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infection with some types of parasites can significantly prolong allograft survival in mice. It is unknown whether the soluble tachyzoite antigen (STAg) from Toxoplasma gondii has the same effect and by what mechanism it acts. METHODS A mouse model of cardiac and skin allograft transplantation was established between BALB/c (H-2(d)) and C57BL/6(H-2(b)) mice. T gondii STAg was prepared, and 5 μg was administered subcutaneously to recipient mice 4 days before transplantation. The graft status was checked daily, and histologic and immunohistochemical assays were used to evaluate rejection. The serum cytokine levels from the recipient mice were analyzed by Luminex. RESULT The administration of 5 μg STAg 4 days before transplantation significantly prolonged the survival time of the heart and skin allografts to 85.17 ± 14.06 and 24.17 ± 2.32 days, respectively. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes were markedly reduced in the allografts at day 7 posttransplantation. Notably, interleukin (IL)-12, IL-2, and IL-17 levels were significantly reduced in the serum of mice treated with STAg compared with untreated mice 7 days after transplantation. In contrast, the levels of the antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10 were elevated. CONCLUSION A single administration of STAg before transplantation can significantly prolong the allograft survival time, which is accompanied by impaired lymphocyte infiltration and a reduced Th1 response.

Abstract
p55PIK, a regulatory subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases, promotes cell cycle progression by interacting with cell cycle modulators such as retinoblastoma protein (Rb) via its unique amino-terminal 24 amino-acid residue (N24). Overexpression of N24 specifically inhibits these interactions and leads to cell cycle arrest. Herein, we describe the generation of a fusion protein (Tat transactivator protein (TAT)-N24) that contains the protein transduction domain and N24, and examined its effects on the proliferation and differentiation of leukemia cells. TAT-N24 not only blocks cell proliferation but remarkably induces differentiation of leukemia cells in vitro and in vivo. Systemically administered TAT-N24 also significantly decreases growth of leukemia cell tumors in animal models. Furthermore, overexpression of p55PIK in leukemia cells leads to increased proliferation; however, TAT-N24 blocks this effect and concomitantly induces differentiation. There is significant upregulation of p55PIK mRNA and protein expression in leukemia cells from patients. TAT-N24 inhibits cell cycle progression and induces differentiation of bone marrow cells derived from patients with several different types of leukemia. These results show that cell-permeable N24 peptide induces leukemia cell differentiation and suggest that p55PIK may be a novel drug target for the treatment of hematopoetic malignancies.
