Abstract
Background: Arthroscopy was used to observe the clinical effect of liver-softening medicine for treating knee osteoarthritis (OA). Materials and Methods: Forty knee OA patients with cartilage classifications of Outerbridge grade II, III, or II plus III determined via arthroscopy were randomly assigned to a treatment of liver-softening medicine plus glucosamine or a control treatment of glucosamine alone. Clinical observation and determination of the comprehensive effect score were performed at 60, 120, and 180 days. A second arthroscopy was performed at 180 days. Results: Signs and symptoms significantly improved at different time points in the treatment group. The effects in the treatment group were better than those in the control group. When analyzing the cartilage during the second arthroscopy, no further degeneration was observed. Conclusions: After arthroscopic debridement, the treatment of knee OA with liver-softening medicine in conjunction with glucosamine is a feasible and effective solution.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between mitochondrial 12 S rRNA gene variation, tRNA gene variation and cytochrome oxidase Ⅱ gene point mutations and the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods: A nested case-control study was performed that followed a cohort of 7 445 noise-exposed workers in a steel factory in Henan province, China, from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2015. Subjects whose average hearing threshold was more than 40 dB(A) in high frequency were defined as the case group, and subjects whose average hearing threshold was less than 35 dB(A) in high frequency and less than 25 dB (A) in speech frequency were defined as the control group. Subjects was recruited into the case group (n=286) and the control group (n=286) according to gender, age, job category and time of exposure to noise, and a 1∶1 case-control study was carried out. We genotyped eight single nucleotide polymorphisms in the mitochondrial 12 S rRNA gene, the mitochondrial tRNA gene and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase Ⅱ gene using SNPscan high-throughput genotyping technology from the recruited subjects. The relationship between polymorphic sites and NIHL, adjusted for covariates, was analyzed using conditional logistic regression analysis, as were the subgroup data. Results: The average age of the recruited subjects was (40.3±8.1) years and the length of service exposure to noise was (18.6±8.9) years. The range of noise exposed levels and cumulative noise exposure (CNE) was 80.1- 93.4 dB (A) and 86.8- 107.9 dB (A) · year, respectively. For workers exposed to noise at a CNE level<98 dB (A) · year, smokers showed an increased risk of NIHL of 1.88 (1.16-3.05) compared with non-smokers; for workers exposed to noise at a CNE level ≥98 dB(A) · year, smokers showed an increased risk of NIHL of 2.53 (1.49- 4.30) compared with non-smokers. For workers exposed to noise at a CNE level<98 dB (A) · year, the results of univariate analysis and multifactor analysis, adjusted by smoking and CNE, suggested that the risk of NIHL in workers exposed to noise carrying the GG genotype (G827A) was lower than that of NIHL workers exposed to noise carrying the AA genotype (G827A) [OR (95% CI) were 0.18 (0.04- 0.82) and 0.19 (0.04- 0.88), respectively]. Conclusion: Smoking increased the risk of NIHL in the present study. For workers subjected to a CNE<98 dB(A)·year, the mitochondrial genetic variant G827A was found to be significantly associated with the risk of NIHL.

Abstract
Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we show that oxygen (O) impurities have a noticeable influence on the glass-formation ability (GFA) in Zr2Cu alloy. Cu-centered icosahedral clusters and Zr-centered Kasper polyhedra are the dominate short-range orders in undercooled Zr2Cu liquid which are most likely to be responsible for the glass formation in Zr2Cu systems. When O is introduced, a Zr octahedron is formed around the O impurity. Most of the Zr atoms in the octahedron also serve as the bridging atoms for cross-linked Kasper polyhedral network, resulting in an O-centered medium range order (MRO) structure. Meanwhile, Cu atoms are moved away from the first shell of O-centered octahedral clusters. With 1 at. % O impurities, the fractions of Zr-centered clusters are less affected, while the increase of ideal icosahedral order and decrease of distorted icosahedral order lead to a more stable atomic structure. This result suggests that a low concentration of O impurities would improve the GFA in Zr2Cu alloy. However, when ∼5 at. % O impurities are included, the ideal icosahedral clusters and Zr-centered Kasper polyhedra are seriously suppressed by the formation of O-centered MRO, which can lead to deterioration of GFA. Our analyses provide useful insight into glass formation behavior in O-doped metallic alloy systems.

Abstract
Aim To explore a more effective surgical procedure, the outcomes of closed manipulative reduction (CMR) combined with minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and conventional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for treating proximal humeral fractures were compared. Material and methods In a retrospective study of patients operated for humerus shaft fractures from April 2008 to July 2011, the outcomes of 33 patients treated with CMR/MIPO were compared with the outcomes of 42 patients treated with ORIF. The fractures were classified, and the incision length, blood transfusion, operating time, as well as the VAS (Visual Analog Scale) pain scores were analyzed. The neck-shaft angles of the proximal humerus were detected, and the postoperative function of the shoulder was evaluated. Results The mean values of incision length, blood transfusion, and VAS pain scores at the 1st and 3rd day after CMR/MIPO and operation time were lower than that of ORIF. The postoperative radiographs verified good position of all screws and satisfactory bone fracture reduction in both groups. Meanwhile, in the ORIF group, nonunion (three cases) and humeral head necrosis (four cases) were detected. Conclusions The MR/MIPO technique showed smaller incisions, easier operation, less blood transfusion and more effective recovery of shoulder joint function for treating proximal humeral fractures than ORIF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate some important issues for diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), such as standardized pre-operative assessment, initial pressure value of diverter pump, and pressure regulation during follow-up. METHODS Twenty six iNPH patients (21 males) who treated in Department of Neurosurgery of 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from 2011 to 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. The average age was 60.5 year. The analysis focused on the treatment process of iNPH, initial pressure value of diverter pump, choice of diverter pump, and pressure regulation during follow-up. RESULTS As a result, 24 cases (92.3%) had a good prognosis based on their imaging and clinical manifestations. Based on the literature and their clinical experiences, this department established a diagnosis and treatment procedure of iNPH and a pressure regulation procedure for the follow-up of iNPH. Moreover, it is proposed that choosing an anti-gravity diverter pump and making an initial pressure value 20 mmH2O less than pre-surgical cerebrospinal pressure may be beneficial for the prognosis. CONCLUSION This standardized diagnosis and treatment procedure for iNPH is practical and effective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of occupational toluene diisocyanate(TDI) exposure on matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1), and analysis of the correlation of MMP-9,TIMP-1,MMP-9/TIMP-1 and lung function. METHODS In October 2014, based on cluster sampling, we conducted a cross-sectional study in a TDI production factory located in China's western region. 61 exposed workers were recruited from workers engaged in packing, operating and checking. Based on different levels of the external exposure, the packers were classified as high exposed group, while operators and checkers as low exposed group. 58 factory managers, matching age and agent, were selected as controls, having same work intense and not contacting the TDI or other allergens. The questionnaire surveys were used to obtain the agent, age, work age, smoking and drinking, personal and family allergic history, occupational history, and the recent health conditions. The levels of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in serum of subjects were determind by ELISA. The time weighted average concentrations (8h-TWA) were used to describe the levels of TDI air exposure in working environment. Spearman correlation assay was used to investigate the correlation of MMP-9, TIMP-1, MMP-9/TIMP-1 and lung function, exposure time. RESULTS 8-hour TWA means of TDI air levels in exposed group, packers, operators and checkers were 0.39, 0.76, 0.25 mg/m(3), respectively . According to the external exposure concentration, the packers were classified as high exposed group, and the operators and checkers were classified as low exposed group. In controls, low exposed group and high exposed group, the levels of MMP-9, respectively, were (807.21±347.70),(586.91±317.50),(388.94±312.01) ng/ml (χ(2)=16.69, P<0.001), respectively, and the P50(P25-P75) of MMP-9/TIMP-1 were 4.67(2.87-6.68), 2.3(1.44-3.48), 1.11(0.59-1.48) (χ(2)=39.42, P<0.001), respectively, and the concentrations of TIMP-1, were (173.44±72.67), (236.12±51.98), (302.81±44.39) ng/ml (F=20.09, P< 0.001), respectively. The levels P50(P25-P75) of FVC, FEV1.0 and FEV1.0/FVC in exposed group were, 92.8% (86.0%-101.8%), 85.5%(76.7%-92.8%), 112.5(108.2-118.5), respectively, which were lower than that in control group (124.3%(107.9%-144.2%), 142.7%(119.1%-155.7%), 129.2(123.5-134))(Z values were 7.70, 8.97, 8.62, and all P<0.001). Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that levels of MMP-9 were positively associated with FEV1.0, and FEV1.0/FVC (r values were 0.27, 0.25, respectively, all P<0.05), and The levels of TIMP-1 were negatively associated with FVC, FEV1.0, and FEV1.0/FVC (r valuse were -0.33, -0.39, -0.39, all P<0.05).The levels of MMP-9 were negatively correlated with exposure time(r=-0.26, P=0.040). The positive correlations of MMP-9/TIMP-1 with FVC, FEV1.0, and FEV1.0/FVC were also found (r valuse were 0.34, 0.44, 0.40, all P<0.05). CONCLUSION TDI exposure could induce the downs of MMP-9 and MMP-9/TIMP-1 associated with lung functions. The MMP-9 and MMP-9/TIMP-1,in a way, could reflect the respiratory inflammatory injury caused by TDI exposure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the reference range and influeing factors of the nuclear division index (NDI) of peripheral blood lymphocyte in Chinese general population in Anhui province. METHODS We selected 281 subjects from the general poulation in Anhui province, without occupational exposure to genetic toxicants and no chronic disease history. We used questionnaires to collect occupational history, age, gender, region, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol drinking status etc. NDI was measured by cytokinesis block micronucleus assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes, and the related factors were also analyzed. And NDI was used as the dependent variable, age, gender and other factors as independent variables to conduct stepwise multiple linear regression. RESULTS We found the data of NDI according with normal distribution, and the nuclear division index was 1.71±0.22, the minimum value was 1.10 while the maximum was 2.36. The results showed that NDI value of the males (1.67±0.20) were lower than that of the females (1.76±0.24), the difference was statistically significant (t=-3.65, P<0.001); current smokers NDI (1.66±0.18) lower than non-smokers (1.73±0.24) differences were statistically significant (t=3.06, P=0.002); the NDI of drinking groups (1.66±0.20) was lower than that of non-drinking population (1.74±0.23), the differences was statistically significant (t=3.15, P=0.002); Using multiple stepwise linear regression calibration factors and found that gender was an independent factor of NDI (β=0.098, Sx=0.027, t=3.66, P< 0.001). CONCLUSION We set the reference value on the nuclear division index among general population of survey areas in this study, it could provide a reference for similar studies and will provide reference for better evaluation of the effects of hazards on the body.

Abstract
A first-order phase transition from a high-density liquid to a low-density liquid has been proposed to explain the various thermodynamic anomies of water. It also has been proposed that such liquid-liquid phase transition would exist in supercooled silicon. Computer simulation studies show that, across the transition, the diffusivity drops roughly 2 orders of magnitude, and the structures exhibit considerable tetrahedral ordering. The resulting phase is a highly viscous, low-density liquid silicon. Investigations on the atomic diffusion of such a novel form of liquid silicon are of high interest. Here we report such diffusion results from molecular dynamics simulations using the classical Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential of silicon. We show that the atomic diffusion of the low-density liquid is highly correlated with local tetrahedral geometries. We also show that atoms diffuse through hopping processes within short ranges, which gradually accumulate to an overall random motion for long ranges as in normal liquids. There is a close relationship between dynamical heterogeneity and hopping process. We point out that the above diffusion mechanism is closely related to the strong directional bonding nature of the distorted tetrahedral network. Our work offers new insights into the complex behavior of the highly viscous low density liquid silicon, suggesting similar diffusion behaviors in other tetrahedral coordinated liquids that exhibit liquid-liquid phase transition such as carbon and germanium.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to characterize the mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) mobilization, and bone turnover in osteoporotic fracture healing in ovariectomized mice. METHODS In total, 112 female C57/BL mice were divided into two groups. The first group was sham-operated (SO), and the other group was ovariectomized (OVX). After three weeks, the right femora of the mice were fractured under anesthesia and internally fixed with steel pin. Peripheral blood and bone marrow were was collected for flow cytometry analysis, at 0 hours (h), 12 h, 24 h, 72 h and 168 h after fracture. MSCs and EPCs levels were assessed using cell surface antigens in different combinations (CD44+ CD34-CD45-, and CD34+ KDR+CD45-) by flow cytometry. At 0, 14, 28 and 42 days after fracture, sera were assayed for circulating levels of procollagen type I-N-terminal propeptide (P1NP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I-collagen (CTX) by ELISA. Femurs were harvested at 2 weeks and 6 weeks after fracture for X-ray radiography, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histology. RESULTS Our results showed that bone marrow and peripheral blood MSCs numbers of the OVX mice were significantly lower than the SO mice, at 12 h, 24 h and 72 h after fracture. In addition, circulating P1NP and CTX levels of the OVX mice were significantly higher than the SO mice, at 2 and 4 weeks. CONCLUSION Results of the present study revealed disorders of bone marrow MSCs mobilization and bone turnover may partially account for the delay of osteoporotic fracture healing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship among pain and other symptoms intensity, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS The study was cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational. A convenience sample of 466 patients with knee OA was recruited in the study. Age, gender, body mass index (BMI), duration of disease, and Kellgren- Lawrence (KL) scores were recorded. HRQoL and symptoms were assessed using the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Western Ontario and McMaster (WOMAC) index in participants. RESULTS The sample was predominantly female (82%) with mean age 56.56 years and mean BMI 24.53 kg/m(2). We found that WOMAC subscale scores significantly negative correlated with the majority of SF-36 subscale scores in knee OA patients (P < 0.05). There were no correlations between BMI, duration of disease, KL score and the vast majority of SF-36 subscale scores in patients (P > 0.05). In addition, there was a significant correlation between age and PCS, gender and MCS in patients (P < 0.05). Regression analysis showed, WOMAC subscale scores significantly negative correlated with the vast majority of SF-36 subscale scores. WOMAC-pain score had the strongest relationship with SF-36 PCS and MCS scores. CONCLUSIONS In summary, pain severity has a greater impact on HRQoL than patient characteristics, other joint symptoms and radiographic severity in Chinese knee OA patients. Relieving of knee symptoms may help to improve patients' HRQOL. The study provided the evidence that relieving pain should be the first choice of therapy for knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of close reduction combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis for distal fracture of tibial shaft. METHODS From March 2009 to May 2013, there were 124 patients (89 males and 35 females, 30 of them were injured in a traffic accident and 94 were falling down in daily life, the ages ranging from 21 to 81 years old) who suffered from distal fracture of tibial shaft. Sixty-six patients (48 males and 18 females, 45 cases of type A, 12 cases of type B and 9 cases of type C) were treated with close manipulative reduction combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate fixation. After close reduction, a minimal incision was made and a anatomic plate was inserted just along the medial tibia periostea, and then the fracture was fixed without fracture exposure. The other 58 patients (41 males and 17 females, 41 cases of type A, 10 cases of type B and 7 cases of type C) were treated with conventional open reduction and internal fixation. Length of the incision, operating time, early postoperative pain (recorded using the Visual Analog Scale score) and the outcome results (recorded using the evaluation standard of Johner-Wruhs) were compared. RESULTS The length of incision was meanly (7.34 ± 1.42) cm in MIPPO group and (21.82 ± 2.35) cm in ORIF group; operation time was (44.48 ± 10.00) min in MIPPO group and (59.42 ± 11.84) min in ORIF group. The postoperative radiographs verified good position of all screws and satisfactory bone fracture reduction in both groups. All the patients were followed up, and the duration ranged from 10 to 24 months (mean 15.2 months) in both groups. In MIPPO group, only one patient had delayed union and got union after Chinese herb therapy. The other 65 patients got bony union during 15 to 20 weeks. While in ORIF group, 3 patients suffered from nonunion and received reoperation with bone grafting, and 4 patients got bone infection. CONCLUSION Treatment of distal fracture of tibial shaft, combined with close reduction and MIPPO technique, has the advantages such as less invasion, less damage of blood supply, simplified procedure of operation and higher union rate, which is an ideal methods and is accordant to the biological demand.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore mechanisms by which fructus Schisandrae chinensis (Wuweizi) is able to reveal its protective capacity against hepatocyte injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Identification of candidate small molecular compounds was performed by text-mining, extraction and isolation, reverse-docking, network construction, molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In vitro cytological examination and western blotting were used to validate efficacy of selected compounds. RESULTS We analyzed chemical composition of fructus Schisandrae chinensis and constructed protein-protein networks of key targets. Networks of miRNA-protein were constructed. Molecular docking and MD simulation results supported good interaction between selected compound 11/12 and GBA3/SHBG. Further in vitro examination divulged molecular mechanisms involved. CONCLUSIONS In silico analysis and experimental validation together demonstrated that compound 11/12 of fructus Schisandrae chinensis targetted GBA3/SHBG in hepatocytes. Hopefully this will shed light on exploration of its complex molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate regulation function of anodonta glucan HBP-A on chondrocytes through Wnt pathway in vitro. METHODS Rat chondrocytes were cultured and differentiated induced with IL-1beta (10 ng/ml) in vitro. Chondrocytes were divided into five groups:IL-13 group,IL-1beta + IWP-2 (5 microM,Wnt pathway inhibitor) group, IL-1beta + HBP-A (0.3 mg/ml) group and IL-1beta + IWP-2 + HBP-A group. Wnt-3a, beta-catenin (24 h,48 h,72 h) and MMP-13(72 h) genes expression were detected by Rt-PCR, while beta-catenin, MMP-13, Sox-9 and coll-II (48 h) protein expression were measured by Western-blot. RESULTS After induction of IL-1beta, gene expression of Wnt-3a, beta-catenin and MMP-13 were increased,so were the protein expression of beta-catenin and MMP-13. In contrast, protein expression of Sox-9 and Coll-II were declined. Following addition of HBP-A, Wnt-3a, beta-catenin and MMP-13 were shown as induction of IL-1beta, but protein expression of Sox-9 and Coll-II were upgraded. Combining HBP-A with IWP-2 led to the lowest level in Wnt-3a, beta-catenin gene and beta-catenin protein expression and highest expression of Sox-9 protein. CONCLUSION HBP-A could not only delay the differentiation of chondrocytes through downgrading the signal expression of Wnt/beta-catenin,but also adjust the expression of Wnt-3a, beta-catenin and Sox-9 when combinated with the Wnt inhibitor.

Abstract
Modern telecommunications rely on the transmission and manipulation of optical signals. Optical amplification plays a vital part in this technology, as all components in a real telecommunications system produce some loss. The two main issues with present amplifiers, which rely on erbium ions in a glass matrix, are the difficulty in integration onto a single substrate and the need of high pump power densities to produce gain. Here we show a potential organic optical amplifier material that demonstrates population inversion when pumped from above using low-power visible light. This system is integrated into an organic light-emitting diode demonstrating that electrical pumping can be achieved. This opens the possibility of direct electrically driven optical amplifiers and optical circuits. Our results provide an alternative approach to producing low-cost integrated optics that is compatible with existing silicon photonics and a different route to an effective integrated optics technology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical effects of close manipulative reduction combined with minimally invasive percutaneous plate fixation(MIPPO) and conventional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for the treatment of proximal humerus fractures. METHODS From April 2008 to March 2013, among the 75 patients with fractures of proximal humerus, 26 patients were male and 49 patients were female, ranging in age from 22 to 80 years; 18 patients had injuries caused by traffic accident and 57 patients had injuries caused by falling down. According to Neer classification, there were 49 cases of two-part fractures and 26 cases of three-part fractures. All the patients were divided into two groups: MIPPO group and ORIF group. There were 12 males and 21 females in the MIPPO group, including 22 cases of Neer two parts and 11 cases of Neer three parts, who were treated with close manipulative reduction combined with MIPPO. While the other 42 patients were in the ORIF group, including 16 males and 26 females. Among those patients,27 cases belonged to Neer two parts and 15 cases of Neer three parts, who were treated with ORIF. Length of the incision, blood loss, operating time, early postoperative pain(recorded by VAS), neck-shaft angle of proximal humerus and postoperative function of shoulder(recorded by Constant-Murley score, including pain, function, ROM and muscle length) were compared. RESULTS The mean lengths of incision were (6.74 +/- 0.38) cm in MIPPO group and (16.82 +/- 1.74) cm in ORIF group;blood losses were (110.15 +/- 29.49) ml in MIPPO group and (326.19 +/- 59.71) ml in ORIF group; operation times were (48.60 +/- 10.18) min in MIPPO group and (68.84-16.22) min in ORIF group. VAS of patients in MIPPO group on the 1st and 3rd days postoperatively were lower than those of patients in the ORIF group. The postoperative radiographs verified good position of all screws and satisfactory reduction of bone fracture reduction in both groups. All the patients were followed up,and the durig ranged from 8 to 24 months (mean 14.2 months). In the MIPPO group, there was no humeral head necrosis and all patients gained bone union; while in the ORIF group, 3 patients sustained nonunion and received reoperation for bone grafting, and 2 patients sustained humeral head necrosis. The mean Constant-Murley scores of shoulder were 88.94 +/- 2.57 in the MIPPO group and 86.00 +/- 3.36 in the ORIF group. CONCLUSION The close manipulative reduction combined with MIPPO is a better choice for fixation of proximal humerus fractures, compared with conventional plate. This method possesses such advantages as a shorter incision, less disturbance of the blood supply and stable fixation of the fracture, allowing early exercise so that the function of shoulder recovers rapidly.

Abstract
Effective biomarkers for clinical usage of osteoarthritis are still limited. It was confirmed that C-terminal crosslinking telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX- II) was a specific marker reflecting degradation of articular cartilage. Detection of CTX- II could promptly reflect level of cartilage injury and degradation ,diagnose OA,predict its progress, monitor effects of drug treatment, thus, reflect the condition of osteoarthritis patient indirectly. Application of CTX- II focused mainly on in the early stage of OA and need together to detect with other biomarkers,in order to more accurately reflection of the pathological changes of OA,but the specific clinical significance of CTX- II results still need to improve further.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical effects of close reduction combined with minimally invasive percutanous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) for proximal and distal tibial fractures. METHODS From March 2007 to December 2010, 56 patients with proximal and distal tibial fractures were treated with close reduction combined with MIPPO technique. There were 39 males and 17 females, aged from 22 to 67 years with an average of 41.3 years. Left fracture was in 25 cases and right fracture was in 31 cases; proximal tibial fracture was in 15 cases and distal tibial fractures was in 41 cases; 34 cases caused by fall down and 22 cases caused by road accident. The mean time from injury to operation was 1.7 d. Clinical manifestation included pain, swelling of leg with limitation of activity. According to the standard of Johner-Wruhs, clinical effects were evaluated. RESULTS The mean operative time was 46 min in 56 patients. All fractures obtained satisfactory reduction and the location of plate was good. Incisions healed with one-stage and no superficial or deep infection was found. All the patients were followed up from 8 to 23 months with an average of 14.2 months. Only one fracture complication with delayed union, and after auto grafting with ilium bone, the fracture got union. Other 55 cases obtained bone healing in 15 to 20 weeks after operation and no internal fixation failure was found. The time of walking was 4-6 months after operation, without limping at 7 months after operation. Both lower extremities were symmetrical and the function of knee and ankle got complete recovery. According to the criteria of Johner-Wruhs score,46 cases obtained excellent results,9 good and 2 fair. CONCLUSION Treatment of proximal and distal tibial fractures with close reduction and MIPPO technique can not only preserve soft tissue, simplify operative procedure and decrease wound, but also can obtain rigid internal fixation and guarantee early function exercises of knee and ankle joints. The method has the advantages of less soft tissue injury, less blood loss, reliable fixation, which is effective method in treating proximal and distal tibial fractures and corresponds with the standpoint of biological fixation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the diagnostic value of whole-organ magnetic resonance imaging score (WORMS) in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS From November 2009 to January 2011,70 patients with KOA combined with knee effusion among outpatient and inpatient were analyzed retrospectively. Among the patients, 12 patients were male, 58 patients were female, ranging in age from 46 to 75 years, with a mean age of (59.66 +/- 9.93) years. The clinical symptoms were evaluated by WOMAC, the imaging of KOA was assessed by K-L score and WORMS, and COMP and CTX- II were measured respectively by ELISA. The correlation analyses and multiple linear regression analysis were studied to determine associations among biomarkers, clinical variables and radiographic findings of knee joints. RESULTS The average scores of WOMAC and WORMS were (57.50 +/- 8.20) and (64.54 +/- 16.45) respectively. The median of CTX- II nd COMP were 2.42 ng/ml and 4.56 ng/ml respectively. Grouped by less than the lowest quartile and more than the highest quartile of WORMS, COMP was significantly different (Z=2.04, P=0.039), but there was no significant difference in CTX-II (Z=0.79, P=0.427). WORMS were positively correlated with WOMAC and K-L score (r=0.777, P<0.01; r=0.716, P<0.01; respectively); WOMAC was also positively correlated with K-L score (r=0.692, P<0.01). WORMS's cartilage, osteophytes and synovitis were positively correlated with WOMAC, K-L score and COMP respectively (r=0.771, P<0.01; r=0.509, P<0.01; r=0.917, P<0.01). It was determined by stepwise regression that the KOA was mainly affected by WORMS, K-L score (P=0.015, P=0.025 respectively) when WOMAC as a dependent variable, age, gender, K-L score, WORMS, COMP and CTX- II as independent variables (F=20.327, P<0.01). CONCLUSION WORMS has a better reference value for diagnosis of KOA. The expression of COMP is high in the synovial fluid when WORMS at the high point. The clinical symptoms of knee osteoarthritis are mainly affected by WORMS and K-L score.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish an animal model of lung injury in SD rats using intratracheal instillation of unknown polymer and to provide the base for exploring the molecular mechanism of lung tissue injury induced by occupational exposure. METHODS One hundred forty SD rats were randomly divided into seven groups, including the control group 1 which was exposed to normal solution, the control group 2 which was not exposed to any one and five treatment groups which were exposed to 1 ml unknown polymer (0.5 ml for each lung) at the doses of 40, 30, 20, 10 and 5 mg/ml, respectively by intratracheal instillation. The rats were sacrificed on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th, 21th and 28th day after exposure, then the lung tissues were examined pathologically and the blood bio-chemical analysis was conducted. RESULTS The results of blood biochemical analysis indicated that ALT and AST levels in rats exposed to 30 and 40 mg/ml unknown polymer were significantly higher than those in control groups. Intratracheal instillation of unknown polymer can causes PLF in experimental animals on the 14th days after exposure. The results of pathological examination exhibited that the lung tissue injury in rats exposed to unknown polymer for 14 days or more was found and the dose-effect relationship was observed. CONCLUSION An animal model of lung injury in SD rats induced by unknown polymer with intratracheal instillation was established successfully. The results of pathological examination showed that the types of rat lung injury were similar to the clinical lung injury after exposure to unknown polymer, which provided a base for studying the mechanism of lung injury caused by occupational exposure to unknown polymer.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of myelin protein zero (P(0)) in 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD)-induced peripheral nerve injury, and the protective effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (Egb761) on 2,5-HD-induced toxic peripheral neuropathy. METHODS After 4 weeks of treatment with 2,5-HD at different doses (50, 100, 200, 400 mg/kg) in rats, changes in the levels of P(0) in rat sciatic nerves was investigated, and the effect of Egb761 on 2,5-HD-induced toxic peripheral neuropathy was studied. RESULTS The blood-nerve barrier (BNB) permeability of the sciatic nerve increased, and the expression of P(0) mRNA and P(0) protein decreased in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with 2,5-HD for 4 weeks. Pretreatment with Egb761 protected against BNB interruption, and inhibited P(0) mRNA and protein reduction during 2,5-HD treatment. Pretreatment with Egb761 significantly reduced loss of body weight (P<0.01) and mitigated gait abnormalities (2.85±0.22) induced by 400 mg/kg 2,5-HD (P<0.01). It also reduced the signs of neurotoxicity induced by 2,5-HD. CONCLUSION 2,5-HD inhibited the expression of P(0) in a dose-dependent manner, and this may be an important mechanism by which toxic peripheral neuropathy is induced by 2,5-HD. Egb761 has a protective effect against 2,5-HD-induced peripheral neurotoxicity in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between the polymorphisms of metabolic genes and telomere length of genomic DNA in peripheral blood of workers exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). METHODS One hundred and forty five coke-oven workers exposed to PAHs and sixty eight non-exposed medical staffs were recruited in this study. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) served as the internal exposure dose of PAHs for all subjects. Relative telomere length (RTL) of genomic DNA in peripheral blood was used as telomere length and measured by real-time PCR. Polymorphisms of metabolic genes were detected by PCR-based methods. RESULTS Compared with control group, the exposure group shown a decreased RTL (1.10 +/- 0.75 vs 1.43 +/- 1.06, P < 0.05). In the coke-oven workers, after adjusting the sex, age, cigarettes per day and urinary 1-OHP, RTL (1.25 +/- 0.93) of workers with CT genotype at the CYP1A1 3801 T > C was significantly longer than that (0.93 +/- 0.51) of workers with TT genotype (P < 0.05). RTL (0.90 +/- 0.58) of individuals with the Tyr/His genotype at mEH Tyr113His was significantly shorter than that (1.24 +/- 0.90) of individuals with the Tyr/Tyr genotype (P < 0.05). RTL (1.02 +/- 0.64) of individuals with the CT genotype at AHR rs10250822 was significantly shorter than that (1.36 +/- 1.14) of individuals with the CC genotype (P < 0.05). RTL (0.93 +/- 0.54) of individuals with the AT genotype at AHR rs10247158 was significantly shorter than that (1.19 +/- 0.84) of individuals with the AA genotype (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results of present study suggested that PAHs exposure could induce the shorted RTL, CYP1A1, mEH, AHR polymorphisms might influence the change of telomere length of genomic DNA in peripheral blood of workers exposed to PAHs.

Abstract
Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) (genus Tospovirus; family Bunyaviridae) is a devastating disease in the production of ornamental flowers (1). From 2007 to 2009, a survey of 10 major parks and recreation areas in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, China, indicated that approximately 60 to 70% of Spiderlily (Hymenocallis littoralis Salisb.) plants from eight parks had symptoms of concentric ring spots and necrotic spots. Symptomatic plants were tested for INSV and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) with an immunostrip (Agdia Inc. Elkhart, IN). Results indicated that only the samples designated HDL were positive for INSV and all other samples were negative for both INSV and TSWV. Mechanically inoculated Emilia sonchifolia, Nicotiana glutinosa, Impatiens balsamina, and N. rustica showed chlorotic lesions, concentric rings, and severe necrosis, symptoms typical for INSV in these hosts. Electron microscope inspection found tospovirus-like spheroidal, enveloped particles that were 90 nm in diameter. Primer 5 software (Premier, Canada) was used to design 14 primers from GenBank Accession No. NC_003625 to amplify the L RNA, nine from NC_003616 to amplify the M RNA, and six from NC_003624 to amplify the S RNA. With total RNA extracted from infected plant tissue as templates in reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, these primers generated 29 target fragments of 250 to 900 bp. These fragments were cloned with the vector pMD19 simple-T vector (Takara Bio Inc., Dalian, China) and sequenced. The sequences of the clones were aligned with the software DNAman (version 2.5; Lynnon Biosoft, Quebec, Canada), showing that RNAs L, M, and S are 8,776 bp (GenBank Accession No. GU112505), 4,948 bp (GenBank Accession No. GU112503), and 2,875 bp (GenBank Accession No. GU112504), respectively. BLAST analysis of these Spiderlily INSV sequences against the NCBI sequence database indicated that the RdRp protein (L RNA) was 99.6% identical with the RdRp protein from an Italian isolate (No. DQ425094), the Nsm protein (M RNA) has 99.0% identity with the Nsm protein from an isolate from Italy (No. DQ425095) and one from the United States (No. NC_003616), the G1G2 polyprotein (M RNA) has 99.9% identity with the analogous protein from an Italian isolate (No. DQ425095), the N protein (S RNA) has 99.6% identity with the N protein from an Italian isolate (No. DQ425096), and the NSs protein (S RNA) has 98.7% identity with the NSs protein from an isolate from Japan (No. AB109100). To our knowledge, this is the first report of INSV on Spiderlily in China. Reference: (1) A. E. Whitfield et al. Annu. Rev. Phytopathol. 43:459, 2005.

Abstract
Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is one of the major fruit crops in Taiwan, accounting for 275 million U.S. dollars in 2006, following betel nut and citrus production in crop value. Tainung No. 17 is the most important cultivar, accounting for more than 70% of pineapples planted. Mealybug wilt of pineapple (MWP) is one of the most destructive diseases of pineapple. Pineapple mealybug wilt-associated virus-1 (PMWaV-1), PMWaV-2, and PMWaV-3 were identified as three distinct species in Ampelovirus from diseased Hawaiian pineapple (1,2). In November of 2007, pineapples (cv. Tainung No. 17) planted in Pingtung County of southern Taiwan showed symptoms similar to MWP. Mealybugs (Dysmicoccus brevipes) were also found. Three primer pairs, 225/226, 223/224, and 263/264 described previously specific for the HSP70h genes of PMWaV-1 (1), -2, and -3 (2), respectively, were used to detect the presence of these three viruses by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. Expected DNA fragments of 590, 610, and 499 nt were obtained from the total RNA isolated from the leaves of diseased pineapples with primer pairs 225/226, 223/224, and 263/264, respectively. The RT-PCR amplified fragments were cloned, sequenced, and analyzed. The 590-nt fragment (Accession No. EU769113) shared 91.6 to 99.5% nucleotide and 96.8 to 99.5% amino acid identity to those of five isolates of PMWaV-1 available in the GenBank; one each from Hawaii (Accession No. AF414119) and Thailand (Accession No. EF620774) and three from Australia (Accession Nos. EF488752, EF467923, and EF467925). The 610-nt fragment (Accession No. EU769115) showed 98.7 and 99.7% nucleotide and 98% and 100% amino acid identity to those of PMWaV-2 from Hawaii (Accession No. AF283103) and Thailand (Accession No. EU016675), respectively. The 499-nt fragment (Accession No. FJ209047) shared 86.8 to 99.0% nucleotide and 94.0 to 100.0% amino acid identity to those of five PMWaV-3 isolates available in the GenBank; one from Hawaii (Accession No. DQ399259) and four from Australia (Accession Nos. EF467918, EF467919, EF488754, and EF488755). Using primer pairs FJ08-1 (5'-ATGGCTGATTCGAGC)/FJ08-2 (5'-TTATTTGCGTCCACC), FJ08-7 (5'-AGTGAGATTGATCGT)/FJ08-8 (5'-TGCAGGTATCCGCTG), and FJ08-35 (5'-AACGACCGAACTCGC)/FJ08-36 (5'-ATACTACAGATATTG) specific to the coat protein (CP) genes of PMWaV-1, -2, and -3, respectively, expected DNA fragments of 774, 909, and 789 nt were amplified by RT-PCR. The 774-nt CP gene of PMWaV-1 (Accession No. EU769114) shared 99% nucleotide and 98.4% amino acid identity to those of Hawaiian isolate (Accession No. AF414119). The 909-nt CP gene of PMWaV-2 (Accession No. EU769116) shared 99.0 and 99.1% nucleotide identity with isolates from Hawaii (Accession No. AF283103) and Cuba (Accession No. DQ225114), respectively, and 99.3% amino acid identity with both. The 789-nt CP gene of PMWaV-3 (Accession No. FJ209048) shared 99.1% nucleotide and 98.1% amino acid identity to those of the Hawaiian isolate (Accession No. DQ399259). One to two viruses among PMWaV-1, -2, and -3 were detected in all 40 samples collected from diseased pineapples. To our knowledge, this is the first report to identify three PMWaVs in the most important and widely planted pineapple cultivar in Taiwan, Tainung No. 17, by molecular characterization of the HSP70h and CP genes. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of polymorphisms of nucleotide excision repair genes and chromosomal damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes among coke-oven workers. METHODS The genotypes of ERCC1 C19007T, ERCC2 C22541A, ERCC2 G23591A, ERCC2 A35931C, ERCC4 T30028C, ERCC5 G3507C and ERCC6 A3368G among 140 coke-oven workers and 66 non-coke-oven controls were determined by PCR-PFLP methods. Chromosomal damage was detected by cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay. RESULTS Multivariate analysis of covariance revealed that in coke-oven workers, the ERCC1 19007 CC genotype exhibited significantly higher CBMN frequency [(1.05 +/- 0.68)%] than did the CT [(0.81 +/- 0.66)%] (P = 0.01) or TT [(0.66 +/- 0.37)%] (P = 0.05) or CT + TT genotypes [(0.75 +/- 0.63)%] (P = 0.004). For the ERCC6 A3368G polymorphism, AA genotype exhibited significantly higher CBMN frequency [(1.00 +/- 0.69)%] than did the AG [(0.67 +/- 0.42)%] (P = 0.05) or AG + GG genotypes [(0.66 +/- 0.41)%] (P = 0.02). Stratification analysis found the significant association between the two polymorphisms, ERCC1 C19007T and ERCC6 A3368G, and the CBMN frequencies were most pronounced in older workers. In addition, for the polymorphism of ERCC2 G23591A, GA carriers had significantly higher CBMN frequencies [(1.40 +/- 0.63)%] than those GG carriers [(0.98 +/- 0.59)%] (P = 0.01) in older workers. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that polymorphisms of ERCC1 C19007T, ERCC6 A3368G and ERCC2 G23591A were associated with the CBMN frequencies in coke-oven workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of XRCC1 polymorphisms and chromosomal damage levels in peripheral blood lymphocyte in coke-oven workers. METHODS The study included 141 coke-oven workers who exposed to a high level of polycyclic aromahaplotpetic hydrocarbon and 66 non-exposed controls. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene and chromosome damage in peripheral lymphocyte were measured. Four -tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms in XRCC1 gene, including C26304T, G27466A, G28152A and G36189A, were detected and the XRCC1 haplotypes were estimated by using an extension of Clark algorithm. The associations between haplotype pairs and micronuclei data were assessed by analysis of covariance in the exposed and non-exposed groups. RESULTS The geometric means of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene levels in coke-oven workers and the controls were 12.0 and 0.7 micromol/mol Cr respectively (P < 0.01). The cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytokinesis-block micronucleus frequencies (number of micronucleus per 1 000 binucleated lymphocytes) was significantly higher in coke-oven workers (0.95 +/- 0.66)% than in the controls (0.40 +/- 0.36)%, P < 0.01. The haplotype CGGG was associated with the decreased frequencies of total micronucleus, and the haplotypes TGGG (P = 0.01) and CGAG (P < 0.05) were associated with the increased frequencies of total micronucleus in the multivariate analysis with adjustment for covariates among coke-oven workers. CONCLUSIONS The genetic polymorphisms of XRCC1 gene could influence the chromosome damage levels in coke-oven workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of polymorphisms of metabolic and DNA repair enzyme genes and DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes in coke-oven workers. METHODS One hundred and forty-four coke-oven workers and 50 controls were recruited in this study. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) levels were measured as the internal dose of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure. DNA damage was detected by alkaline comet assay, and the value of 1.74 was used as the cut-off value to determine whether the individual's DNA damage was positive. The genotypes of CYP1A1, CYP2E1, GSTP1, NQO1, mEH and XRCC1 were determined by PCR-based methods. With adjustment for urinary 1-OHP, age, sex, multiple analysis of covariance was used to study the association between genotypes and the ln-transformed olive TM and multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the adjusted OR and the 95% CI for the risk of DNA damage. RESULTS In 144 coke-oven workers, with adjustment for urinary 1-OHP, coking history and sex, the olive TM was significantly higher with XRCC1 280His allele than those with Arg allele (5.6 vs. 2.8, P < 0.01). The subjects with XRCC1 280His allele also have significantly higher risk for DNA damage than subjects with Arg allele (adjusted OR = 2.66, 95% CI = 1.00-7.14, P = 0.05) and the subjects with GSTP1 104Val allele have higher risk for DNA damage than subjects with Ile allele (adjusted OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 0.94-3.85, P = 0.07). CONCLUSION XRCC1 and GSTP1 polymorphisms might influence the susceptibility of DNA damage in occupational PAH-exposed coke-oven workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations of polymorphisms of metabolic enzyme genes with urinary 1-hydroxypyrene levels in coke oven workers. METHODS One hundred and forty-eight workers from a coke oven plant and 69 controls without occupational PAHs exposure were selected in this study. Urinary 1-hydroxypyrene was detected by high performance liquid chromatography with florescence detector. The genotypes at I462V site in exon 7 of CYP1A1 gene, GSTM1, GSTT1, I105V site in GSTP1gene, Pst1 and Dra1 sites in CYP2E1 gene, P187S site in NQO1 gene, Kpn1, BamH1 and Taq1 sites in NAT2 gene, and H113Y, R139H sites in mEH gene were determined by PCR-based methods. Personal information including occupational exposure history, age, sex, smoking and drinking status was collected by the questionnaire. RESULTS The level of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene in coke oven workers [(5.61 +/- 1.04) mol/mol Cr] was higher than that in control [(0.74 +/- 0.32) micro mol/mol Cr]. After adjusting external occupational exposure category and smoking, coke oven workers with variant homozygotes at H113Y site of mEH gene had significantly higher urinary 1-hydroxypyrene concentrations than those with heterozygotes, and wild homozygotes (6.41 +/- 1.09 vs. 6.24 +/- 1.08, and 4.62 +/- 0.95 micro mol/mol Cr, P < 0.05), and gene-gene interaction was found between CYP1A1 and mEH. CONCLUSION Genetic polymorphism of mEH gene could be a susceptible biomarker in coke oven workers which was involved in the individual susceptibility on metabolism of PAHs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between lymphocyte DNA damage and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure in coke oven workers. METHODS Two hundred and thirty-five coke oven workers and 30 controls were selected in this study. Alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis was used to evaluate the lymphocyte DNA damage, HPLC was employed to measure 1-hydroxypyrene levels in spot urine samples which were obtained at the end of a workweek (4 days of 8 hours/day) and personal information including occupational exposure, age, sex, smoking and drinking status was collected by the questionnaire. RESULTS The lymphocyte DNA damage level expressed as olive moment in coke oven workers was significantly higher than that of controls [2.47 (0.22 approximately 46.68) vs 0.94 (0.42 approximately 4.21), P < 0.01], and correlation between urinary 1-hydroxypyrene concentrations and olive moment was found (Spearman Partial correlation coefficient = 0.22, P < 0.01) in coke oven workers. The 1.9 of olive moment value was used as the limit to determine whether the subject DNA damage was positive. The coke oven workers had significantly higher risk in DNA damage (adjusted OR = 5.38, 95% CI = 2.07 approximately 14.08) than did controls, and dose-response relationships were also found between external exposure (exposure category) or internal doses (urinary 1-hydroxypyrene) and DNA damage. CONCLUSION There are dose-effect and dose-response relationships between PAHs exposure and lymphocyte DNA damage in coke oven workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between the urinary 1-hydroxypyrene level and cytokinesis-block micronucleus and the olive moment of comet assay in peripheral blood lymphocyte in coke oven workers. METHODS One hundred and thirty-three workers from a coke plant and 28 referents without occupational PAH exposure were recruited in this study. Urinary level of 1-hydroxypyrene was measured by alkaline hydrolysis combined with high performance liquid chromatography as an internal exposure dose, and the DNA and chromosomal damage of peripheral blood lymphocyte were evaluated with comet assay and cytokinesis-block micronucleus method. Personal information including occupational history, age, sex, smoking and alcohol drinking, was collected by questionnaire. RESULTS There existed a good correlationship between the urinary level of 1-hydroxypyrene and frequency of micronuclei per 1 000 binucleated cells or the olive moment of comet assay in the study subjects, after adjusting for sex, age, smoking and alcohol drinking (r > 0.25, P < 0.01). One hundred and sixty-one subjects were divided into three groups by their urine 1-hydroxypyrene level (expressed as 0.30 - 2.44, 2.45 - 7.09 and 7.10 - 33.10 micro mol/mol Cr), and the geometric means of their urinary levels of 1-hydroxypyrene were 1.14, 4.32 and 12.49 micro mol/mol Cr, respectively. After adjusting for age, sex, smoking and alcohol drinking by multiple nonparametric analysis of covariance, the median of olive moment of comet assay in the group of 7.10 - 33.10 micro mol/mol Cr was 3.67, significantly higher than that in the groups of 0.30 - 2.44 and 2.45 - 7.09; and the micronuclei frequencies in the groups of 2.45 - 7.09 and 7.10 - 33.10 micro mol/mol Cr were 8.00 per thousand and 7.50 per thousand, respectively, significantly higher than that in the group of 0.30 - 2.44 micro mol/mol Cr (6.00 per thousand ). CONCLUSIONS The comet assay of peripheral blood lymphocyte was more suitable to detect the PAHs-induced early genotoxicity, than the cytokinesis-block micronucleus.

Abstract
In this study we investigated genetic polymorphisms of five metabolizing genes and their association with occupational chronic manganism. We recruited 49 patients with chronic manganism and 50 unrelated healthy control subjects who were welders and ferromanganese smelters and occupationally exposed to manganese dust and fume in the same workshops from three metallurgical industries. The controls were matched to the cases by sex, age, cigarette and alcohol intake, as well as the manganese exposure duration. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to genotype the cytochrome P450 2D6L gene (CYP2D6L) and the NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase gene (NQO1). Allele-specific PCR was used to detect the cytochrome P450 1A1 gene (CYP1A1), and the glutathione-S-transferase mu and theta genes (GSTM and GSTT). The frequency of polymorphic alleles, a mutation of CYP2D6L, was significantly lower in patients with chronic manganism (16.3%) than in controls (29.0%). Individuals with the homozygote polymorphism (L/L) of CYP2D6 had a 90% decreased risk of chronic manganism compared with the wild-type (Wt/Wt) (odds ratio =0.10, 95% confidence interval = 0.01-0.82). A significant association between the CYP2D6 genotype subgroup and the latency of chronic manganese poisoning was also found. Patients who had homozygous (L/L) or heterozygous (Wt/L) mutant alleles developed manganism an average of 10 years later than those who were homozygous wildtype (Wt/Wt). However, the allele and genotype frequencies of CYP1A1 and NQO1 genes were distributed similarly in cases and controls. In addition, no difference in the frequencies of GSTM1 and GSTT1 null genotypes were observed between cases and controls. The results suggest that CYP2D6L gene polymorphism might influence susceptibility to manganese-induced neurotoxicity. However, because of limited sample size, our results should be validated in large-scale studies.

Abstract
A new ion chromatographic method was developed for the quantitative determination of ammonia and potassium in tobacco. The tobacco samples were treated with dilute nitric acid and K+, NH4+ were extracted. The method is fast and convenient. The relationships between peak heights and initial concentrations of K+ and NH4+ were linear. The detection limits were 0.05 mg/L for K+ and 0.03 mg/L for NH4+. Recoveries of K+ and NH4+ were 96.7%-106.7% and 96.5%-109.1% respectively. The whole procedure of determination can be completed within 5 min.

Abstract
AIM To study the effects of bambuterol (Bam) on bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs. METHODS Bronchospasm induced by histamine aerosol, lung resistance (RL) and dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn) changes induced by ovalbumin aerosol in vivo, isolated resting lung parenchyma strips, and carbamylcholine-induced tracheal constriction in vitro in guinea pig were investigated. RESULTS Bam dose-dependently prolonged the time to histamine-induced collapse, ED50 values (95% confidence limits) of Bam intragastric gavage (i.g.) after 1 h, 4 h, and 24 h were 0.74 (0.60-0.91), 0.75 (0.61-0.91) and 1.00 (0.77-1.30) mg.kg-1, respectively. Bam 2 or 10 mg.kg-1 i.g. 2 h before ovalbumin aerosol partly or almost completely inhibited bronchial challenge of ovalbumin-induced change of RL and Cdyn. Bam 0.1-1.0 mumol.L-1 gave a weak relaxation on isolated tracheal strips induced by carbamylcholine and failed to relax the isolated resting lung parenchyma strips in guinea pig. CONCLUSION Bam showed a long-acting bronchodilation by its slow metabolism in vivo.

Abstract
The main goals of the study were to elucidate the mechanism of Al-induced behavioral toxicity and to explore the possible link between the changes in the metabolism of monoaminergic or cholinergic transmitters and neurobehavioral effects. Three groups (12 rats in each group) were fed with aluminum chloride in drinking water (1600 mg/l) ad libitum through a 90-day exposure period. The controls were fed with distilled water. From the 60th to 90th day of treatment, two of the three Al-treated groups were administered with L-dopa (220 mg/kg.bw) and eserine (0.4 mg/kg.bw) by gavage, respectively. A two-item neurobehavioral test battery consisting of step down test and Morris water maze task was used for rats after three months treatment. In the step-down test, markedly shortened the step-down latency (SDL) and the number of step-down (NSD) were observed in the Al-treated group (P < 0.05, vs. control). On the contrary, only slight changes were found in the rats treated with aluminum combined with L-dopa or eserine (P > 0.05, vs control). In eserine and L-dopa antagonized groups, the mean escape latencies of Morris water maze approached a level close to that of the controls (P > 0.05). The results showed that the Al-induced memory and learning impairment could be reduced by L-dopa or eserine. It is suggested that the depletion of dopaminergic and cholinergic transmitters in the central nervous system might play an important role in Al-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract
Meta-analysis was used to deal with the data collected in neurobehavioral toxicological studies to synthesize their findings quantitatively. Results revealed neurotoxic chemicals could cause changes in cognitive abilities, psychomotor function and emotion of persons exposed. However, each toxicant had its distinct effects on neurobehavior, for example, lead mainly impairs touch sense, memory, emotion and cognitive abilities, mercury does intelligence, concentration and motor stability, and carbon disulfide does eye-hand coordination. It suggested meta-analysis could be directive to selecting the best combination of neurobehavioral tests.

Abstract
During the last 16 years, radical resection was performed in 392 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Eight patients died within 30 days after resection. The other 384 patients were discharged from hospital and closely followed for 6 to 195 months. By December 1991, 185 patients had developed a recurrent tumor, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year recurrence rates being 15.0%, 45.4%, and 55.3%, respectively. Ninety of the 185 patients underwent reoperation, including second hepatic resection (65 cases), cryosurgery (8 cases), resection of lung metastasis (6 cases), hepatic artery ligation and infusion chemotherapy (2 cases), intratumor ethanol injection (3 cases), microwave coagulation plus intratumor ethanol injection (2 cases), and exploration (4 cases). The survival rate of these 90 patients was significantly better than that of 95 patients who were treated by other palliative methods, the 5-year survival rate being 63.4% as compared with 28.6% after the first resection (P < 0.01), and 40.8% vs. 2.2% after recurrence (P < 0.01), respectively. These results suggest that reoperation for recurrent HCC might be an important approach to prolonging survival further after hepatic resection.

Abstract
Microwave surgery was employed for the treatment of 50 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis, including hepatectomy in 46 patients and in situ coagulation of tumor in 4 patients. In the study, 2,450 MHz microwaves were generated and transmitted to a monopolar needle electrode. For hepatectomy, the needle electrode was inserted into the liver parenchyma to coagulate the liver tissue and this was repeated at 1 cm intervals along the line where incision is anticipated. For unresectable HCC, the needle electrode was directly inserted into HCC to coagulate the cancer in situ. The average amounts of blood loss and blood transfusion for 46 hepatectomies using microwave were 215 +/- 189 ml and 274 +/- 261 ml, respectively. Eighteen patients (39.1%) did not need blood transfusion. A significant lower volume of blood loss and blood transfusion was observed in comparison with 46 matched conventional hepatectomies, 652 +/- 1,008 ml and 841 +/- 878 ml, respectively, all being P < 0.01. There were no operative mortality and complications, such as delayed bleeding, bile leakage, and abdominal infection. These results indicate that microwave surgery can be utilized safely and effectively in the field of liver surgery.

Abstract
From November 1973 to June 1992, cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees C) was performed on 113 patients with hepatic cancer, including 107 patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) and 6 patients with secondary liver cancer (SLC). Of the 107 PLC patients, the subclinical stage constituted 30.8% (33/107), the moderate stage 61.7% (66/107), and the late stage 7.5% (8/107). There were 32 cases with small PLC (up to 5 cm). Liver cirrhosis was observed in 86.0% (92/107). We designed flat cryoprobes for freezing tumors deep within the hepatic parenchyma. Intraoperative ultrasound was used for monitoring hepatic cryolesions. There were no operative mortalities and complications, such as rupture of a tumor, delayed bleeding, or bile leakage. The 5-year and 10-year survival rates were 22.0% and 8.2%, respectively, for the 107 PLC patients and 48.8% and 17.1%, respectively, for the 32 patients with small PLC. Of the 6 SLC patients, survival ranged from 2 months to 90 months (average, 23.2 months). One SLC patient has been well for 7 years and 6 months after cryosurgery. These results indicate that cryosurgery, the in situ freezing of cancer, is a safe and effective treatment for unresectable hepatic cancer.
