Abstract
Introduction: Muscle and bone constitute the two main parts of the musculoskeletal system and generate an intricately coordinated motion system. The crosstalk between muscle and bone has been under investigation, leading to revolutionary perspectives in recent years. Method and results: In this review, the evolving concept of muscle-bone interaction from mechanical coupling, secretory crosstalk to stem cell exchange was explained in sequence. The theory of mechanical coupling stems from the observation that the development and maintenance of bone mass are largely dependent on muscle-derived mechanical loads, which was later proved by Wolff's law, Utah paradigm and Mechanostat hypothesis. Then bone and muscle are gradually recognized as endocrine organs, which can secrete various cytokines to modulate the tissue homeostasis and remodeling to each other. The latest view presented muscle-bone interaction in a more direct way: the resident mesenchymal stromal cell in the skeletal muscle, i.e., fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs), could migrate to the bone injury site and contribute to bone regeneration. Emerging evidence even reveals the ectopic source of FAPs from tissue outside the musculoskeletal system, highlighting its dynamic property. Conclusion: FAPs have been established as the critical cell connecting muscle and bone, which provides a new modality to study inter-tissue communication. A comprehensive and integrated perspective of muscle and bone will facilitate in-depth research in the musculoskeletal system and promote novel therapeutic avenues in treating musculoskeletal disorders.

Shi B, Cheng R, Robins RW. Investigating the trajectory of Mexican-origin youth's materialistic values across adolescence and prospective associations with life satisfaction in early adulthood: The role of familism, demographic factors, and parent characteristics. J Pers Soc Psychol 2024; 126:492-510. [PMID: 37956044 DOI: 10.1037/pspp0000489] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/15/2023]
Abstract
Using data from a 14-year longitudinal study of 674 Mexican-origin youth, the present study examined the development of materialistic values (MV) across adolescence (ages 10-16), correlates of the adolescent MV trajectory, and prospective associations between the MV trajectory and life satisfaction in early adulthood (ages 17-23). Latent growth curve analyses showed that MV decreased, on average, from early to late adolescence. Youth raised in families with higher household income, higher maternal and paternal education, and lower maternal and paternal MV tended to be less materialistic; higher maternal education was associated with smaller decreases in MV from age 10 to 16. A strong association of greater decreases in MV across adolescence was found with higher initial life satisfaction at age 17, but not with changes in life satisfaction from age 17 to 23. Findings from this study provide insights into the development of MV among Mexican-origin youth. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

[PMID: 38426040 PMCID: PMC10901851 DOI: 10.1016/j.pmedr.2024.102662] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/25/2023] [Revised: 02/17/2024] [Accepted: 02/19/2024] [Indexed: 03/02/2024] Open
Abstract
Objective Current cost-effectiveness analyses of amblyopia screening are mainly from western countries. It remains unclear whether it is cost-effective to implement a preschool amblyopia screening programme in China. Our study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a hypothetical kindergarten-based amblyopia screening versus non-screening among 3-year-old children. Methods We developed a decision tree combined with a Markov model to compare the cost and effectiveness of screening versus non-screening for 3-year-old children from a third-party payment perspective. The primary outcomes were quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). Costs were obtained from expert opinions in different regions of China. Transition probabilities and health utilities were mainly based on published literature and open sources. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the impact of parameters' uncertainty on results. Results Base-case analysis demonstrated that the ICER of screening versus non-screening was $17,466/QALY, well below the WTP threshold ($38,223/QALY) for China. One-way sensitivity analysis showed that the prevalence of amblyopia, the transition probability per year from untreated amblyopia to healthy, and the discount rate were the top three factors. The likelihood of cost-effectiveness of screening compared with non-screening was 92.56%, according to probabilistic sensitivity analysis. Scenario analysis also indicated that ICER was lower than the WTP threshold even if the time horizon was shortened or the screening was delayed to the age of 4 or 5. Conclusions Amblyopia screening could be considered a cost-effective strategy compared to non-screening for 3-year-old children in China. Screening for children at the age of 4 or 5 may even yield better results.

Abstract
The first observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}K^{+} and Ω_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+} decays is reported, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector between 2016 and 2018. The branching fraction ratios are measured to be B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}K^{+})/B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+})=[6.08±0.51(stat)±0.40(syst)]%,B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})/B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+})=[15.81±0.87(stat)±0.44(syst)±0.16(ext)]%. In addition, using the Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+} decay channel, the Ω_{c}^{0} baryon mass is measured to be M(Ω_{c}^{0})=2695.28±0.07(stat)±0.27(syst)±0.30(ext) MeV, improving the precision of the previous world average by a factor of 4.

Enhanced Production of Λ_{b}^{0} Baryons in High-Multiplicity pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:081901. Abstract
The production rate of Λ_{b}^{0} baryons relative to B^{0} mesons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λ_{b}^{0} to B^{0} production cross sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in e^{+}e^{-} collisions, and increases by a factor of ∼2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λ_{b}^{0} to B^{0} cross sections is higher than what is measured in e^{+}e^{-} collisions, but converges with the e^{+}e^{-} ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy b quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.

Abstract
Ti2AlNb-based alloys are expected to be applied in the manufacture of parts of aeroengines to achieve the goal of increasing the thrust-to-weight ratio. However, the poor high temperature oxidation resistance of these alloys may hinder their applications. Alloying has been proven to be effective in improving oxidation resistance properties. However, the selection of alloying elements and their influence mechanisms are rarely studied. The TiO2/Ti2AlNb interface bonding interactions and the effects of alloying elements of Si, Sc, Y, Zr, Mo and Hf were investigated via first principles calculations. The separation energy and electronic structure were studied to explore the bonding interactions between the oxide scale and Ti2AlNb matrix. When Zr and Hf are used to replace Al, the bonding properties of the TiO2/Ti2AlNb interface are improved. The tensile and shear deformations of the interfacial zones are applied to study the influence of alloying elements on the TiO2 oxide spalling on Ti2AlNb. The tensile strength is increased by more than 2 GPa when Nb is substituted by the Sc, Zr and Hf elements. Therefore, Sc, Zr, and Hf are beneficial for inhibiting oxide spalling and will have great potential to improve the oxidation resistance properties.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative clinical and functional outcomes of palatoplasty with three soft palate cleft repairs and analyse the factors potentially impacting these outcomes. A retrospective analysis was conducted on a consecutive series of 337 patients who underwent primary cleft palate repair by palatoplasty modified with either Furlow Z-plasty (P-FZP, n = 77), intravelar veloplasty (P-IVV, n = 110), or combined intravelar veloplasty-Furlow Z-plasty (P-IVV-FZP, n = 150). The postoperative outcomes evaluated included wound healing (complete closure/fistula) and velopharyngeal function. Demographic and surgical data were analysed using both univariate and multivariate analysis. There was no significant difference between the groups with regard to the sex distribution, age at repair, cleft width, cleft type, or follow-up duration. However, relaxing incisions were significantly more common with P-FZP (26.0%) and P-IVV (29.1%) compared to P-IVV-FZP (10%) (P = 0.002 and <0.001, respectively). The complete wound closure rate was significantly higher with P-IVV-FZP (97.3%) compared to P-FZP (88.3%) (P = 0.012) and P-IVV (90%) (P = 0.015). The normal velopharyngeal function rate was comparable for P-IVV-FZP (86.7%) and P-FZP (83.1%), and both rates were significantly better than the rate with P-IVV (73.6%) (P = 0.039 and 0.029, respectively). The cleft type and width were identified as factors influencing postoperative outcomes. In conclusion, it may be appropriate to prioritize the palatoplasty with combined intravelar veloplasty-Furlow Z-plasty whenever feasible.

Abstract
Blurry scenarios, such as light reflections and water ripples, often affect the clarity and signal-to-noise ratio of fish images, posing significant challenges for traditional deep learning models in accurately recognizing fish species. Firstly, deep learning models rely on a large amount of labeled data. However, it is often difficult to label data in blurry scenarios. Secondly, existing deep learning models need to be more effective for the processing of bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate images, which is an essential reason for their low recognition rate. A method based on the diffusion model and attention mechanism for fish image recognition in blurry scenarios, DiffusionFR, is proposed to solve these problems and improve the performance of species recognition of fish images in blurry scenarios. This paper presents the selection and application of this correcting technique. In the method, DiffusionFR, a two-stage diffusion network model, TSD, is designed to deblur bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate fish scene pictures to restore clarity, and a learnable attention module, LAM, is intended to improve the accuracy of fish recognition. In addition, a new dataset of fish images in blurry scenarios, BlurryFish, was constructed and used to validate the effectiveness of DiffusionFR, combining bad, blurry, and otherwise inadequate images from the publicly available dataset Fish4Knowledge. The experimental results demonstrate that DiffusionFR achieves outstanding performance on various datasets. On the original dataset, DiffusionFR achieved the highest training accuracy of 97.55%, as well as a Top-1 accuracy test score of 92.02% and a Top-5 accuracy test score of 95.17%. Furthermore, on nine datasets with light reflection noise, the mean values of training accuracy reached a peak at 96.50%, while the mean values of the Top-1 accuracy test and Top-5 accuracy test were at their highest at 90.96% and 94.12%, respectively. Similarly, on three datasets with water ripple noise, the mean values of training accuracy reached a peak at 95.00%, while the mean values of the Top-1 accuracy test and Top-5 accuracy test were at their highest at 89.54% and 92.73%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the method showcases superior accuracy and enhanced robustness in handling original datasets and datasets with light reflection and water ripple noise.

Improved Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B_{s}^{0}→J/ψK^{+}K^{-} Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ(1020) Resonance. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:051802. [PMID: 38364143 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.132.051802] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/04/2023] [Accepted: 12/04/2023] [Indexed: 02/18/2024]
Abstract
The decay-time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_{s}^{0}→J/ψ(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K^{+}K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B_{s}^{0} signal decays with an invariant K^{+}K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020) resonance, the CP-violating phase ϕ_{s} is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_{s}^{0}-B[over ¯]_{s}^{0} system, ΔΓ_{s}, and the difference of the average B_{s}^{0} and B^{0} meson decay widths, Γ_{s}-Γ_{d}. The values obtained are ϕ_{s}=-0.039±0.022±0.006 rad, ΔΓ_{s}=0.0845±0.0044±0.0024 ps^{-1}, and Γ_{s}-Γ_{d}=-0.0056_{-0.0015}^{+0.0013}±0.0014 ps^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ_{s} is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K^{+}K^{-} system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics of a Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) patient carrying a de novo variant of TCOF1, and briefly analyze the correlation between genetic results and clinical features. Also, the pathogenesis and clinical treatment of TCS are reviewed. A Chinese pedigree with TCS containing 8 members was enrolled. Phenotype of the proband was evaluated by a surgeon, then whole exome sequencing of the proband was performed. Then we verified the proband-derived variants by Sanger sequencing in the pedigree. Correlation between genotype and phenotype was analyzed. The study was conducted in a stomatological hospital. A Chinese pedigree with TCS containing 8 members. To ascertain the genetic variants in the Chinese pedigree with TCS. Blood samples were collected. We reported a case of typical TCS with a de novo missense variant (NM_001371623.1:c.38T>G, p.(Leu13Arg)) in exon 1 of TCOF1, who presented asymmetrical facial abnormalities, including downward slanting of the palpebral fissures, sparse eyebrows, lateral tilt of the eyeballs, bilateral external ears deformities, hypoplasia of midface, reduction of the zygomatic body, bilateral orbital invagination, right external auditory canal atresia, mandibular ramus short deformity, cleft palate and the whole face was convex. This research found a novel variant of TCS in Chinese, expanding the spectrum of TCS pathogenic variants. Genetic results combined with clinical phenotype can make a definite diagnosis and provide genetic counseling for the family.

Huang Z, Bo Z, Li J, Zheng Q, Shi B, Zeng N. Proposed clinical model for predicting speech outcomes in patients undergoing Furlow palatoplasty for velopharyngeal insufficiency after primary palatoplasty. J Craniomaxillofac Surg 2024; 52:234-239. [PMID: 38161074 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcms.2023.12.007] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/18/2022] [Revised: 11/23/2023] [Accepted: 12/12/2023] [Indexed: 01/03/2024] Open
Abstract
This study aimed to validate the predictors of speech outcomes following Furlow palatoplasty in patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) after primary palatoplasty and to propose and validate a model to predict the risk of persistent VPI. The study included patients with VPI after primary palatoplasty who underwent Furlow palatoplasty as a secondary surgery. Eleven variables were included: velar length, pharyngeal cavity depth, velopharyngeal gap, velopharyngeal closure pattern, sex, presence of cleft lip, existence of palatal fistula, surgeon, age at primary palatoplasty, age at secondary surgery, and time interval between primary palatoplasty and secondary surgery. Postoperative speech outcomes were assessed at least 1 year after the secondary surgery and classified as velopharyngeal competence (VPC) or VPI. Variables were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis, and the area under the curve (AUC) was used to validate model accuracy. The study sample comprised 101 patients. Of the patients, 62 had VPC and 39 had VPI after secondary surgery. The results showed a younger age at secondary surgery, a smaller velopharyngeal gap, being female, having a coronal velopharyngeal closure pattern and a velopharyngeal closure ratio of 90% or greater produced a greater probability of VPC. Given the constraints of this study, it appears that the Furlow palatoplasty should be prioritized when the clinical model predicts a substantial likelihood of VPC post-surgery.

Chen L, Zeng N, Shi B, Huang H. Preliminary study on reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Asher-McDade aesthetic index. HUA XI KOU QIANG YI XUE ZA ZHI = HUAXI KOUQIANG YIXUE ZAZHI = WEST CHINA JOURNAL OF STOMATOLOGY 2024; 42:97-103. [PMID: 38475957 DOI: 10.7518/hxkq.2024.2023196] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 03/14/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Asher-McDade aesthetic index and clarify its feasibility for the postoperative outcome evaluation of cleft lip in China. METHODS The Chinese version of the Asher-McDade aesthetic index was established through translation, back translation, debugging, and pre-survey. Eighty postoperative photographs of patients with cleft lip admitted to the West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University were included. Ten healthcare professionals, including surgeons, nurses, and students, in the department of cleft lip and palate surgery finished the index to test its reliability and validity. RESULTS The Cronbach's alpha coefficient and retest reliability of this index are 0.804 and 0.895, respectively. The item-level content validity index (I-CVI) and scale-level content validity index ave-rage (S-CVI/ave) of the index are 1.000 and 0.95, respectively. For this index, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test score is 0.706, the χ2 value of Bartlett's test for the consistency of the index is 962.260 (P<0.01), and the cumulative variance contribution rate is 63.095%. CONCLUSIONS The Chinese version of the Asher-McDade aesthe-tic index has good reliability and validity and is applicable to the professional evaluation of the effect of postoperative photographs in Chinese patients with cleft lip.

Abstract
A measurement of time-dependent CP violation in the decays of B^{0} and B[over ¯]^{0} mesons to the final states J/ψ(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K_{S}^{0}, ψ(2S)(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K_{S}^{0} and J/ψ(→e^{+}e^{-})K_{S}^{0} with K_{S}^{0}→π^{+}π^{-} is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The CP-violation parameters are measured to be S_{ψK_{S}^{0}}=0.717±0.013(stat)±0.008(syst) and C_{ψK_{S}^{0}}=0.008±0.012(stat)±0.003(syst). This measurement of S_{ψK_{S}^{0}} represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle β to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the CP-violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed.

Cheng HW, Wang T, Yu GC, Xie LY, Shi B. Prognostic role of the systemic immune-inflammation index and pan-immune inflammation value for outcomes of breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2024; 28:180-190. [PMID: 38235869 DOI: 10.26355/eurrev_202401_34903] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/19/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review examined the literature for evidence on the prognostic ability of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and pan-immune inflammation value (PIV) for predicting overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in breast cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched with Google Scholar for gray literature. All types of studies reporting the association between SII or PIV and OS or DFS of breast cancer were eligible. RESULTS 13 studies on SII and 4 studies on PIV were included. Meta-analysis showed that a high SII was a significant predictor of OS (HR: 1.97 95% CI: 1.54, 2.52 I2=76%) and DFS (HR: 2.07 95% CI: 1.50, 2.86 I2=79%) in breast cancer patients. These results did not change on sensitivity analysis and were more or less stable on multiple subgroup analyses. Pooled analysis showed that high PIV was also a significant predictor of poor OS (HR: 2.63 95% CI: 1.46, 4.74 I2=71%) and DFS (HR: 1.64 95% CI: 1.23, 2.17 I2=0%) in breast cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS High SII and PIV can predict poor OS and DFS in breast cancer patients. High heterogeneity and the observational nature of data are important limitations of the review. Further studies are needed specifically on PIV to increase the strength of the evidence.

Abstract
This study examined the posttraumatic growth (PTG) about parents of children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) and the correlates of PTG. A cross-sectional study. Parents (N = 388) of children with isolated CL/P (ages 3 months-18 years) who had at least one cleft surgery within an oral and maxillofacial surgery department of a university-affiliated tertiary hospital in a provincial capital in southwest China. Demographic information questionnaire, The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, and Social Support Rating Scale were used for data collection. Parents' mean PTG score was in the moderate range (M = 65.7, SD = 13.73). PTG differed regarding the participants' sex, ethnicity, and educational background. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that positive coping (r = 0.43, P < .01), negative coping (r = 0.13, P < .01), and social support (r = 0.26, P < .01) were positively correlated with PTG. Multiple regression model showed that 20.6% (P < .001) of the variance in PTG was explained by higher positive coping (β = 0.35, P < .001), greater social support (β = 0.13, P = .01), and for cleft lip compared to cleft palate (β = -0.14, P ≤ .01), with no variance difference for cleft lip and palate. Parents of children with CL/P had moderate PTG. Potentially modifiable correlates of PTG suggest interventions to enhance parental positive coping and social support may increase PTG. Further studies are needed to confirm the PTG level and its affecting factors of parents of children with CL/P.

Abstract
Recapitulation of the natural healing process is receiving increasing recognition as a strategy to induce robust tissue regeneration. Endochondral ossification has been recognized as an essential reparative approach in natural jawbone defect healing. However, such an approach has been overlooked in the recent development of cell-based therapeutics for jawbone repair. Therefore, this study aimed to explore a bioinspired stem cell-based strategy for jawbone repair by mimicking the mesenchymal condensation of progenitor cells during the early endochondral ossification process. For this purpose, passage 3 of jawbone periosteum-derived cells (jb-PDCs) was cultured in our previously reported nonadherent microwells (200 µm in diameter, 148 µm in depth, and 100 µm space in between) and self-assembled into spheroids with a diameter of 96.4 ± 5.8 µm after 48 h. Compared to monolayer culture, the jb-PDC spheroids showed a significant reduction of stemness marker expression evidenced by flow cytometry. Furthermore, a significant upregulation of chondrogenic transcription factor SOX9 in both gene and protein levels was observed in the jb-PDC spheroids after 48 h of chondrogenic induction. RNA sequencing and Western blotting analysis further suggested that the enhanced SOX9-mediated chondrogenic differentiation in jb-PDC spheroids was attributed to the activation of the p38 MAPK pathway. Impressively, inhibition of p38 kinase activity significantly attenuated chondrogenic differentiation jb-PDC spheroids, evidenced by a significant decline of SOX9 in both gene and protein levels. Strikingly, the jb-PDC spheroids implanted in 6- to 8-wk-old male C57BL/6 mice with critical-size jawbone defects (1.8 mm in diameter) showed an evident contribution to cartilaginous callus formation after 1 wk, evidenced by histological analysis. Furthermore, micro-computed tomography analysis showed that the jb-PDC spheroids significantly accelerated bone healing after 2 wk in the absence of exogenous growth factors. In sum, the presented findings represent the successful development of cell-based therapeutics to reengineer the endochondral bone repair process and illustrate the potential application to improve bone repair and regeneration in the craniofacial skeleton.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the risk factors of poor wound healing after primary cleft palate surgery. METHODS In this study, 980 cases of congenital cleft palate treated by Sommerlad-Furlow in the Department of Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery of Sichuan University from 2017 to 2021 were continuously analyzed. Indicators included patient's age, gender, body weight, cleft palate type, width of the widest fistula, cleft palate index (width of the widest fistula/width at the posterior edge of the maxillary tubercle plane), preoperative white blood cell count, preoperative hemoglobin level, preoperative antibiotic use, doctor's seniority, use of relaxation incision, operation time, postoperative upper respiratory tract infection, and postoperative wound healing. The postoperative wound healing was divided into normal healing, delayed healing, and palatal fistula. Both delayed healing and palatal fistula were classified as poor healing. The factors that may affect the healing outcome of the palatal wound after primary cleft palate repair were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. RESULTS A total of 825 patients (84.2%) had normal healing, 112 patients (11.4%) had delayed hea-ling, and 43 patients (4.4%) had palatal fistula. Doctor's seniority, width of the widest fissure, cleft palate index, and operation time influenced the wound healing effect after cleft palate surgery (P<0.05). Doctors with low seniority, wide width of the widest fistula, large cleft palate index, and long operation time were the risk factors of poor wound healing. CONCLUSIONS Doctor's seniority, width of the widest fissure, cleft palate index, and operation time are related to the effect of healing effect after cleft palate surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The role of MMP16 in lip development is unclear. This study aimed to identify nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without palate (NSCL ± P) susceptible loci of MMP16 in western Han Chinese. DESIGN We performed targeted sequencing around MMP16 combined with a 2-phase association analysis on common variants. Phase 2 association analysis was performed with NSCL ± P specific subphenotypes (NSCL and NSCLP). Then we used rare variants burden analysis and genotyping, accompanied by motif analysis. SETTING This study was completed in a tertiary medical center. PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS Phase 1 targeted sequencing included 159 patients with NSCL ± P and 542 normal controls; phase 2 included 1626 patients with NSCL ± P (1047 NSCL and 579 NSCLP) and 2255 normal controls. INTERVENTIONS Venous blood samples were collected from patients and used to extract DNA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES After Bonferroni correction, phase 1 significant threshold of p-value was 4.28 × 10-5 (0.05/1167 single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]), and phase 2 was .00025 (0.05/200 SNPs). Burden analysis significant threshold p-value was .05. RESULTS Common variants phase 1 association analysis identified 11 statistically significant SNPs (lowest p = 1.90 × 10-9, odds ratio (OR) = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.17-0.44), phase 2 replication identified 16 SNPs in NSCL ± P (lowest p = 6.26 × 10-6, OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.69-0.86) and 9 in NSCL (lowest p = 8.44 × 10-5, OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66-0.87). Rare variants burden analysis showed no significant results, genotyping results showed they were maternally inherited. CONCLUSIONS Our study identified MMP16 susceptible SNPs in NSCL ± P and NSCL, emphasizing its potential role in lip development. Our study also highlighted the importance to perform association analysis with subphenotypes divided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the impact of relaxing incisions on maxillofacial growth following Sommerlad-Furlow modified technique in patients with isolated cleft palate. STUDY DESIGN A Retrospective Cohort Study. METHODS A total of 90 participants, 60 patients with non-syndromic isolated soft and hard cleft palate underwent primary palatoplasty (30 patients received the Sommerlad-Furlow modified technique without relaxing incision (S.F-RI group), and 30 received Sommerlad-Furlow modified technique with relaxing (S.F+RI group) with no significant difference found between them regarding the cleft type, cleft width, and age at repair. While the other 30 were healthy noncleft participants with skeletal class I pattern as a Control group. The control group (C group) was matched with the patient groups in number, age, and sex. All participants had lateral cephalometric radiographs at least 5 years old age. The lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken with the same equipment by the same experienced radiologist while the participants were in centric occlusion and a standardized upright position, with the transporionic axis and Frankfort horizontal plane parallel to the surface of the floor. A well-trained assessor (S. Elayah) used DOLPHIN Imaging Software to trace twice to eliminate measurement errors. All the study variables were measured using stable landmarks, including 12 linear and 10 angular variants. RESULTS The mean age at collection of cephalograms was 6.03 ± 0.80 in the S.F+RI group, 5.96 ± 0.76 in the S.F-RI group, and 5.91 ± 0.87 in the C group. Regarding cranial base, the results showed no statistically significant differences between the three groups in S-N and S-N-Ba. While the S.F+R.I group had a significantly shortest S-Ba than the S.F-R.I & C groups (P = 0.01 & P < 0.01), but there was no statistically significant difference between S.F-R.I & C groups (P = 0.71). Regarding the skeletal maxilla, there was no significant difference between the S.F+R.I and S.F-R.I groups in all linear measurements (N-ANS and S-PM) except Co-A, the S.F+R.I group had significantly shorter Co-A than the S.F-R.I & C groups (P = < 0.01). While the angular measurement, S.F+R.I group had significantly less SNA angle than the S.F-R.I & C groups (P = < 0.01). Regarding mandibular bone, there were no statistically significant differences in all linear and angular mandibular measurements between the S.F+R.I and S.F-R.I.groups. Regarding intermaxillary relation, the S.F+R.I group had significant differences in Co-Gn-Co-A and ANB compared to the S.F-R.I & C groups (P = < 0.01). While there was no statistically significant difference in PP-MP between the three groups. CONCLUSION As a preliminary report, the Sommerlad-Furlow modified technique without relaxing incisions was found to have a good maxillary positioning in the face and a satisfactory intermaxillary relationship compared to the Sommerlad-Furlow modified technique with relaxing incisions.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the current situation of noise hazard in a motor manufacturing enterprise, and to explore the protective effect of workers wearing hearing protective device and its possible influencing factors. Methods: In November 2021, a total of 179 noise workers wearing hearing protective devices in a motor manufacturing company in a city were selected as research objects. Personal attenuation rating (PAR) of workers wearing hearing protective devices was measured. Baseline PAR was analyzed for different subgroups of basic demographic information, noise exposure, and the use of hearing protective devices to evaluate the effect of the intervention. Baseline PAR was compared using nonparametric tests. Results: There were 179 workers from 35 positions in 4 types of work, and the over-standard noise rate was 51.2% (42/82), among which the noise exposure intensity of motor equipment debugging workers was the highest [94.4 dB (A) ]. Compared the baseline PAR of different characteristics, it was found that the baseline PAR of male workers, workers whose daily noise exposure time were <8 h, workers who had used the hearing protective devices for 10 to 14 years, and workers who thought the hearing protective devices were comfortable were all higher, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Baseline PAR passing rate was 43.0% (77/179), and PAR of 102 workers who did not pass baseline test increased from 0 (0, 3) dB before intervention to 14 (12, 16) dB after intervention, with statistical significance (P<0.05) . Conclusion: The noise hazard in this motor manufacturing enterprise is serious, and the protective effect of workers wearing hearing protective devices is not good. Gender, daily noise exposure time, years and comfort of wearing hearing protective device are the possible influencing factors of poor protective effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a particular subtype of cleft deformity for which the optimal surgical timing and technique are still under debate. This study aimed to identify potential prognostic factors for the speech outcome of patients with SMCP and provide evidence for further management strategy optimization. METHODS The authors reviewed patients with nonsyndromic SMCP who received either Furlow palatoplasty (FP) or posterior pharyngeal flap (PPF) between 2008 and 2021 in a tertiary hospital-based cleft center. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to screen preoperative variables, including cleft type (overt or occult), age at surgery, mobility of velum and pharyngeal wall, velopharyngeal closure ratio, and pattern. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the cutoff value of the significant predictors for subgroup comparison. RESULTS A total of 131 patients were enrolled, with 92 receiving FP and 39 receiving PPF. Age at operation and cleft type were identified as having significant effects on FP outcome. Patients operated on before 9.5 years of age had a significantly higher velopharyngeal competence (VPC) rate than those operated on after that age. The speech outcome among patients with occult SMCP was significantly worse than that of patients with overt SMCP after FP treatment. No preoperative variable was found to be correlated with PPF outcome. PPF yielded a higher VPC rate than did FP among patients operated on after 9.5 years of age. CONCLUSIONS The prognosis of patients with SMCP treated with FP is sensitive to age at surgery and cleft type. PPF may be considered for older patients in settings with limited access to multiple surgical procedures, especially when occult SMCP is diagnosed. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic, III.

Abstract
This retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed adult patients with unrepaired SMCP, OCP and normal control and performed comprehensive skeletal and soft tissue morphological analyses basing on lateral cephalometric radiographs. One way-ANOVA and rank-sum tests detected potential intergroup differences. 32 subjects with unrepaired SMCP, 42 with unrepaired OCP and 28 noncleft normal controls were enrolled. Both the SMCP and OCP groups were significantly different from the normal controls in sagittal maxillary length, jaw relationship, facial profile angle, nasal base and nasal tip prominence, upper lip position, and lower lip protrusion. S-N-A angle in the control group (82.25 ± 2.74°) was significantly greater than in the SMCP (77.96 ± 4.05°, p<0.001) and OCP (78.55 ± 2.93°, p<0.001) groups. Nasolabial angle in the control group (99.18 ± 8.76°) was significantly greater than in the SMCP (91.75 ± 8.93°, p = 0.002) and OCP (93.69 ± 7.24°, p = 0.020) groups. No significant difference was detected between the SMCP and the OCP group in other measurements except upper facial height. Within the limitations of the study it seems that craniofacial growth is impaired in patients with submucous clefts to the same extent as in patients with a conventional cleft palate.
