Abstract
The isospin mixing was deduced in the compound nucleus ^{80}Zr at an excitation energy of E^{*}=54 MeV from the γ decay of the giant dipole resonance. The reaction ^{40}Ca+^{40}Ca at E_{beam}=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus in the isospin I=0 channel, while the reaction ^{37}Cl+^{44}Ca at E_{beam}=95 MeV was used as the reference reaction. The γ rays were detected with the AGATA demonstrator array coupled with LaBr_{3}:Ce detectors. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing was obtained and the zero-temperature value deduced. The isospin-symmetry-breaking correction δ_{C} used for the Fermi superallowed transitions was extracted and found to be consistent with β-decay data.

Abstract
We report on the measurement of the first 2(+) and 4(+) states of (66)Cr and (70,72)Fe via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. The nuclei of interest were produced by (p,2p) reactions at incident energies of 260 MeV/nucleon. The experiment was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, RIKEN, using the DALI 2γ-ray detector array and the novel MINOS device, a thick liquid hydrogen target combined with a vertex tracker. A low-energy plateau of 2(1)(+) and 4(1)(+) energies as a function of the neutron number was observed for N≥38 and N≥40 for even-even Cr and Fe isotopes, respectively. State-of-the-art shell model calculations with a modified Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS) interaction in the pfg(9/2)d(5/2) valence space reproduce the observations. Interpretation within the shell model shows an extension of the island of inversion at N=40 for more neutron-rich isotopes towards N=50.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Other than trauma, rib fracture can occur spontaneously due to a severe cough or sneeze. In this study, patients with spontaneous rib fractures were analyzed according to age, sex, underlying pathology, treatment, and complications. METHODS Twelve patients who presented between February 2009 and February 2011 with spontaneous rib fracture were reviewed retrospectively. The patients' data were evaluated according to anamnesis, physical examination, and chest radiographs. RESULTS The ages of the patients ranged from 34 to 77 years (mean 55.91 ± 12.20 years), and 7 (58.4%) were male. All patients had severe cough and chest pain. The fractures were most frequently between 4th and 9th ribs; multiple rib fractures were detected in 5 (41.7%) patients. Eight (66.7%) patients had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 2 (16.7%) had bronchial asthma, and 2 (16.7%) had osteoporosis. Bone densitometry revealed a high risk of bone fracture in all patients. Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or bronchial asthma had been treated with high-dose steroids for over a year. CONCLUSIONS Spontaneous rib fracture due to severe cough may occur in patients with osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or bronchial asthma, receiving long-term steroid therapy. If these patients have severe chest pain, chest radiography should be performed to check for bone lesions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging in the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who have high serum thyroglobulin, negative iodine-131 whole body scan and suppressed thyrotropin. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 90 patients (31 male and 59 female) with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who have high serum thyroglobulin and negative iodine-131 whole body scan were included in the study between July 2006 and March 2014. All patients had undergone surgery (total thyroidectomy ± lymph node dissection) followed by iodine-131 ablation. Of the patients, 82 had papillary thyroid carcinoma and 8 follicular thyroid carcinoma. Serum thyrotropin was suppressed (< 2 μ IU/ml) during the Fluor-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging procedure. RESULTS The overall sensitivity of fluor-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging in the detection of metastasis of differentiated thyroid cancer was 84.8%, the specificity 79.1%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of fluor-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging in classic type of papillary cancer was 83.3% and 54.5%, respectively. The corresponding figures for the tall cell variant was 85.7% and 87.5%, respectively. The difference between the two histological subtypes was statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that fluor-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging could be a valuable test for the routine follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Abstract
The reduced transition probability B(E2;0(+)→2(+)) has been measured for the neutron-rich nucleus (74)Ni in an intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The obtained B(E2;0(+)→2(+))=642(-226)(+216) e(2) fm(4) value defines a trend which is unexpectedly small if referred to (70)Ni and to a previous indirect determination of the transition strength in (74)Ni. This indicates a reduced polarization of the Z=28 core by the valence neutrons. Calculations in the pfgd model space reproduce well the experimental result indicating that the B(E2) strength predominantly corresponds to neutron excitations. The ratio of the neutron and proton multipole matrix elements supports such an interpretation.

Abstract
The half-lives of 20 neutron-rich nuclei with Z=27-30 have been measured at the RIBF, including five new half-lives of (76)Co(21.7(-4.9)(+6.5) ms), (77)Co(13.0(-4.3)(+7.2) ms), (79)Ni(43.0(-7.5)(+8.6) ms), (80)Ni(23.9(-17.2)(+26.0) ms), and (81)Cu(73.2 ± 6.8 ms). In addition, the half-lives of (73-75)Co, (74-78)Ni, (78-80)Cu, and (80-82)Zn were determined with higher precision than previous works. Based on these new results, a systematic study of the β-decay half-lives has been carried out, which suggests a sizable magicity for both the proton number Z = 28 and the neutron number N=50 in (78)Ni.

Abstract
The properties of pygmy dipole states in 208Pb were investigated using the 208Pb(17O, 17O'γ) reaction at 340 MeV and measuring the γ decay with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array. Cross sections and angular distributions of the emitted γ rays and of the scattered particles were measured. The results are compared with (γ, γ') and (p, p') data. The data analysis with the distorted wave Born approximation approach gives a good description of the elastic scattering and of the inelastic excitation of the 2+ and 3- states. For the dipole transitions a form factor obtained by folding a microscopically calculated transition density was used for the first time. This has allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of the 1- excited states from 4 to 8 MeV.

Abstract
Gallbladder agenesis (GA) is a rare condition and was first described by Lemary in 1701. Nearly 400 cases of GA is described in the literature and it is associated with various congenital abnormalities and malformations in some cases. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the malignant tumor arising from bile ducts. A wide range of risk factors have been identified for cholangiocarcinoma. A case of cholangiocarcinoma in which gallbladder agenesis was found incidentally was described in this study.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) represent rather rare neoplasms. Most GISTs are benign; malignant tumors account for 20- 30% of cases (overall, approximately 10- 30% of GISTs exhibit malignant behavior). GISTs most commonly metastasize to the liver and abdominal cavity. Distant metastases to other sites, especially to the bones, are relatively rare. We report a case of a 62 year old man with metastatic spread of GIST to skull, ribs and both sacroiliac joints manifesting six months after surgical resection of a gastric tumor. Although bone metastases from GISTs are rare and there are only a few reported cases in the literature, this case emphasizes that metastatic disease should always be considered in a patient with gastric GIST and suspicious bone lesions.

Abstract
Intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation measurements are performed on the N ≥ 40 neutron-rich nuclei (66,68)Fe and (64)Cr. The reduced transition matrix elements providing a direct measure of the quadrupole collectivity B(E2;2(1)(+) → 0(1)(+)) are determined for the first time in (68)Fe(42) and (64)Cr(40) and confirm a previous recoil distance method lifetime measurement in (66)Fe(40). The results are compared to state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model calculations within the full fpgd neutron orbital model space using the Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja effective interaction and confirm the results of the calculations that show these nuclei are well deformed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We described the treatment of dehiscence of thoracotomy incisions in patients who underwent thoracic surgery in the present study. METHODS Twenty-four patients with either partial or complete dehiscence of their thoracotomy incisions were included in the study from 2005 to 2010. The patients were evaluated regarding their age, sex, indication for thoracotomy, and surgical approaches. We also described our method of re-closure. RESULTS The male/female ratio was 17/7. The youngest and oldest patients were 15 and 75 years old, respectively, and the mean age was 43 years. Among the indications for thoracotomy, empyema was the most common reason (determined in eight [33%] patients), followed by vertebral surgery (determined in six [25%] patients). Bacterial growth was detected in the wound site cultures from 13 (54%) patients. For the patients with dehiscence of their thoracotomy incisions, an en block approximation technique with debridement was performed under general or local anesthesia in 16 (66%) and eight (33%) of the cases, respectively. Three patients exhibited an open thorax with dehiscence of the thoracotomy incision. Thoracoplasty was required in two patients. Using this method, successful closure was obtained in 91.7% (n = 22) of the patients with dehiscence of their thoracotomy incisions. CONCLUSION Dehiscence of the thoracotomy incision is an important complication that causes concern in patients and their thoracic surgeons and strongly affects the success of the surgery. An en block approximation technique with significant debridement that enables removal of the necrotic tissues from the wound site can successfully be applied to patients with dehiscence of their thoracotomy incisions.

Abstract
The neutron-rich lead isotopes, up to (216)Pb, have been studied for the first time, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. The observed isomeric states exhibit electromagnetic transition strengths which deviate from state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. It is shown that their complete description demands the introduction of effective three-body interactions and two-body transition operators in the conventional neutron valence space beyond (208)Pb.

Abstract
To assess the wound healing capabilities of damaged lung tissue in the postpartum period, we investigated the parameters related to wound healing in a rat model of lung damage. Rats were divided into six groups: IA, IB, II, IIIA, IIIB and IV (n=7 in each group). Group IA included rats not in the postpartum period that were sacrificed on the third day after lung injury, group IB included rats not in the postpartum period that were sacrificed on the tenth day after lung injury, group II included rats not in the postpartum period that did not receive lung injury, group IIIA included rats in the postpartum period that were sacrificed on the third day after lung injury, group IIIB included rats in the postpartum period that were sacrificed on the tenth day after lung injury and group IV included rats in the postpartum period without lung injury. Wound healing was evaluated histopathologically and measurements of hydroxyproline levels, serum alanine and glutamine were taken. A significant difference in serum alanine levels was evident between groups IA and IIIA. Significant differences were also observed between serum alanine and glutamine levels in groups IB and IIIB. In conclusion, we demonstrated that serum alanine levels were reduced in the postpartum period following lung injury, which may be expected to negatively impact wound healing in this period. The administration of exogenous alanine for traumatic events occurring during the postpartum period may thus contribute positively to wound healing capabilities during this period.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rib fractures are the most common type of injury associated with trauma to the thorax. In this study, we investigated whether morbidity and mortality rates increased in correlation with the number of fractured ribs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from 214 patients with rib fractures who applied or were referred to our clinic between January 2007 and December 2008 were retrospectively evaluated. The patients were allocated into three groups according to the number of fractures: 1) patients with an isolated rib fracture (RF1) (n = 50, 23.4%), 2) patients with two rib fractures (RF2) (n = 53, 24.8%), and 3) patients with more than two rib fractures (RF3) (n = 111, 51.9%). The patients were evaluated and compared according to the number of rib fractures, mean age, associated chest injuries (hemothorax, pneumothorax, and/or pulmonary contusion), and co-existing injuries to other systems. FINDINGS The mean age of the patients was 51.5 years. The distribution of associated chest injuries was 30% in group RF1, 24.6% in group RF2, and 75.6% in group RF3 (p<0.05). Co-existing injuries to other systems were 24% in group RF1, 23.2% in group RF2, and 52.6% in group RF3 (p<0.05). Two patients (4%) in group RF1, 2 patients (3.8%) in group RF2, and 5 patients (4.5%) in group RF3 (total n = 9; 4.2%) died. CONCLUSION Patients with any number of rib fractures should be carefully screened for co-existing injuries in other body systems and hospitalized to receive proper treatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess patients treated for esophageal foreign bodies. The charts of patients (n=177), between January 1994 and April 2009, were investigated retrospectively. Patients' age and gender, locations and types of foreign bodies (FBs) and interventions were taken into consideration. Fifty-seven percent of the patients were male. The youngest patient was 6 months, whereas the oldest was 83 years old. The median age was 9 years. Half of the patients were in their first decade. Treatment took place 11 h (ranging from 1 to 120 h) after impaction of the FB. One hundred fifty-two FBs were removed in 177 patients. Our negative esophagoscopy (n=25) rate was 14%. The FBs were radiopaque in 75% (n=114) and were commonly (71%; n=109) located in the cervical esophagus. Metallic coins (n=81-53%) were the most commonly observed inorganic FB while bones and/or meat impaction (n=54-35%) were the most frequent organic FB. A total of 182 endoscopic interventions were performed on these patients. One hundred eleven of them were esophagoscopy and the remaining 71 were direct laryngoscopy. The FB was pushed into the stomach in 11 patients. Our morbidity rate was 1.6% (n=3). Iatrogenic perforation occurred in two patients. There was no mortality. Esophageal FBs may vary in type: sharp or round objects, metallic, plastic or organic material. FBs are commonly found at pharyngoesophageal junction and usually removed by McGill forceps. Rigid esophagoscopy is used for children and adults because of its large working channel. Rigid instruments are considered reliable and safe for extracting foreign bodies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics, morbidity and mortality in patients with a sternum fracture (SF). METHODS From October 1998 to December 2008, 80 patients with sternal fractures were admitted to the Thoracic Surgery Department of the University Hospital. The records of all patients were reviewed retrospectively. Patients' age and gender, extent of sternal and thoracic injury, types of associated injuries, treatment and outcome, the length of hospital stay, morbidity and mortality were collected. We divided our patients into two groups: Group I with an isolated sternum fracture and Group II with a sternum fracture and additional injury. RESULTS Patients' ages ranged from 18 to 83 years with an average age of 48.7 +/- 15.4 years. There were 67 male (84 %) and 13 female (16 %) patients. Thirty-five patients (44 %) sustained an isolated SF and the remaining 45 (56 %) had a SF in combination with associated injuries. The commonest etiology of the SF was a motor vehicle accident (77 %). Most of the fractures were located at the sternal body (76 %). The most common associated injuries were rib fractures (30 %), followed by extremity injuries (18 %). The great majority of patients (81 %) was treated with conservative measures such as bed rest, analgesia, etc. The remainder was treated either by tube thoracostomy (15 %), thoracotomy (1.25 %) or sternal fixation (2.5 %). There was no mortality and morbidity in Group I, but the morbidity and mortality rates of Group II were 15 % and 1 %, respectively. Mean length of hospital stay for all the patients was 5.7 days. CONCLUSION Isolated SFs are benign entities that can be safely managed with rest and analgesia. Associated injuries in patients with SF determine the morbidity and length of hospital stay.

Abstract
Isospin symmetry breaking has been investigated in mass A=67 mirror nuclei through the experimental determination of the E1 strengths of analog electromagnetic transitions. Lifetimes of excited states have been measured in (67)Se and (67)As with the centroid shift method. Through the comparison of the B(E1) strengths of the mirror 9/2(+)-->7/2(-) transitions, the isovector and the isoscalar components of the electromagnetic transition amplitude were extracted. The presence of a large isoscalar component provides evidence for coherent contributions to isospin mixing, probably involving the isovector giant monopole resonance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We discuss the etiology and incidence of iatrogenic pneumothorax (IPnx) which can develop after invasive procedures performed for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes, and the efforts to prevent this complication and its consequences. METHODS The records of patients who were treated for the diagnosis of IPnx between December 1998 and December 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were evaluated according to their age, gender, the procedure which caused IPnx, the department which performed the procedure, the treatment and its consequences. RESULTS 12 010 invasive procedures were performed in our hospital during the period and 164 patients (1.36 %) developed IPnx. Their mean age was 49.27 (range: 8 months-93 years). Of the patients, 101 (61 %) were male and 63 (39 %) were female. The 56.7 % of the invasive procedures which caused IPnx were performed under emergency conditions and 43.3 % were performed under elective conditions. In 69 patients (42 %) the procedures were performed due to underlying lung diseases and in 95 patients (58 %) for diseases other than lung diseases. The most frequent procedure type causing IPnx was central venous catheterization, with 72 patients (43.8 %). The other frequent causes were thoracentesis with 33 patients (20.1 %) and barotrauma due to mechanical ventilation with 15 patients (9.1 %). CONCLUSION At training hospitals the incidence of IPnx will increase in parallel to the increase in invasive procedures. Invasive procedures should be performed by experienced personnel or under their supervision when risk factors are involved.

Abstract
The lifetimes of the first excited states of the N = 30 isotones (50)Ca and (51)Sc have been determined using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in combination with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers. This is the first time such a method is applied to measure lifetimes of neutron-rich nuclei populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction. This extends the lifetime knowledge beyond the f_{7/2} shell closure and allows us to derive the effective proton and neutron charges in the fp shell near the doubly magic nucleus (48)Ca, using large-scale, shell-model calculations. These results indicate an orbital dependence of the core polarization along the fp shell.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine whether early esophagoscopy is really necessary for the patients who have ingested a corrosive agent. Patients who were followed up with the diagnosis of corrosive ingestion in our clinic between the years 1998 and 2008 were studied retrospectively. The data were collected through the medical records of the patients and from interviews with them. The analyzed parameters included age, gender, the nature and the amount of the ingested agent, whether the event was accidental or suicidal, diagnostic tools, treatment and the results of the treatment, and long-term follow up. Over a 10-year period, a total of 124 cases of corrosive ingestion cases were determined. Of these, 64 (51.6%) were male and 60 (48.4%) were female. The mean age was 38 +/- 17.5 years. The most commonly ingested corrosive agents were sodium hypochlorite in 50 (40.3%) patients and hydrochloric acid in 33 (26.6%) patients. The mean admission time for the emergency department after ingestion of the corrosive agent was 2.5 +/- 3.7 hours. Ingestion was accidental in 82% of the patients and as a result of a suicide attempt in 18%. The amount of ingested corrosive agent in the suicidal group (190 +/- 208.3 mL) was higher than that of accidental group (66 +/- 58.3 mL) (P= 0.012). Nine patients underwent esophagoscopy, six of which were performed in other clinical centers. Only three (2.4%) patients experienced esophageal stricture, which were treated with repeated dilatations. In the long-term follow up, we could get in touch with only 63 patients and none of them had complications due to corrosive ingestion. The follow-up period ranged from 1 to 120 months (median 45 +/- 29.2 months). Based on our study, early esophagoscopy appears to be unnecessary in adult patients who ingested the corrosive agent accidentally. A larger prospective study is needed to answer the question.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation percentage (FMD%) are two commonly used parameters for detecting subclinical atherosclerosis. However, studies investigating the relationship between CIMT and brachial artery FMD% in different populations have produced conflicting results. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between CIMT and brachial artery FMD% in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) METHODS: Fifty-two PD patients without known cardiovascular disease and 30 age-gender matched controls were included in the study. Endothelial function was determined using ultrasonography (US) to measure the FMD of the brachial artery, and this parameter was expressed as the percentage change from the baseline diameter of the brachial artery (FMD%). We also measured CIMT by US and analysed the relationship between CIMT and brachial FMD%. RESULTS The CIMT was significantly higher in patients than in the control group (0.84 +/- 0.08 vs. 0.75 +/- 0.06 mm, P < 0.01), whereas brachial artery FMD% was lower in patients than in the controls (8.2 +/- 5.0 vs. 11.7 +/- 5.5%, P < 0.01). There was no significant correlation between CIMT and FMD% (r = -0.004, P = 0.94). CONCLUSION Although PD patients are known to be characterized by an impaired flow-mediated vasodilatation of brachial artery and increased in CIMT, we did not find a significant correlation between FMD% and CIMT in our PD patient cohort. One possible explanation for our results is that each method measures a different aspect and stage of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
We report a rare occurrence of trapped lung associated with Wermer's syndrome and cutis laxa. A 25-year-old man with bilateral trapped lung presented with respiratory distress. Additional investigation revealed adenoma of the parathyroid and hypophysis, a neuroendocrine abdominal tumor, and cutis laxa. Successful treatment of the respiratory symptoms was achieved through a median sternotomy with bilateral decortication, and excision of the bilateral fibrous pleural bands and bullae on the right upper lobe. Octreotide therapy was initiated and a percutaneous ultrasound-guided alcohol injection to the parathyroid adenoma was done. The patient has gynecomastia, acromegaly, and kyphoscoliosis. The patient remains well at 19 months after treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress (OS) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) are accepted as nonclassical cardiovascular risk factors in end-stage renal disease patients. To clarify the role of these factors in the atherosclerotic process, we investigated if OS and ADMA are associated with common carotid artery intima media thickness (CIMT) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS Thirty PD patients without known atherosclerotic disease and classical cardiovascular risk factors as well as age- and gender-matched 30 healthy individuals were included. We measured serum thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced glycation end product (AGE), pentosidine, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ADMA and CIMT in each subjects. RESULTS TBARS, MDA, AOPP, AGE, pentosidine and ADMA levels were significantly higher in PD patients than in controls (p < 0.001). CIMT in patients was higher than in the control group (0.83 +/- 0.09 vs. 0.77 +/- 0.06 mm; p < 0.01). CIMT was independently correlated with TBARS (beta = 0.33, p < 0.01), MDA (beta = 0.27, p < 0.01), AOPP (beta = 0.22, p < 0.02), AGE (beta = 0.45, p < 0.01), pentosidine (beta = 0.56, p < 0.01) and ADMA (beta = 0.54, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS OS markers and serum ADMA levels independently predict the CIMT level in PD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to determine the age and sex distribution and the nature of aspirated foreign bodies (FBs). We also compared Turban Pins (TP) with other FBs and discussed the extracting techniques. METHODS From 1987 through 2006, 414 patients were managed and the records of the patients were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Girls (56%) were influenced much more than the boys (44%). The median age was 4, however median age for girls and boys were 11 and 2, respectively. The 50% of the foreign body aspiration (FBA) were observed in the first years of life. There was also a great tendency to occur in the adolescent age group (32%), especially for girls. The most commonly aspirated foreign body was Turban pin (TP) (n=121) among 332 foreign bodies. FBs were successfully removed by rigid bronchoscopy in 94% of the patients. In patients who had a negative history (n=49), bronchoscopy was performed according to clinical suspicion, and it revealed foreign bodies in 41%. Thoracotomy was performed in eight (2.4%) patients. We had no mortality. CONCLUSIONS These cases showed us that the type and age groups of FBA varies according to cultural conditions. We found that TP aspiration has different characteristics and it deserves a special attention. Suspicion is an important indication for bronchoscopy. We prefer rigid bronchoscopy because success rate is satisfactory.
