Abstract
AIMS Although cisplatin-fluoropyrimidine-based definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) is a standard of care for oesophageal cancer, toxicity is significant and limits its use in elderly and frail patients. Weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based dCRT provides a viable alternative, although prospective data are lacking in the dCRT setting. Here we report the results of a national, multicentre retrospective review of outcome in patients treated with weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based dCRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this multicentre retrospective study of nine radiotherapy centres across the UK we evaluated the outcome of patients who had non-metastatic, histologically confirmed carcinoma of the oesophagus (adenocarcinoma, squamous cell or undifferentiated; World Health Organization performance status 0-2; stage I-III disease) and had been selected to receive weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based dCRT as they were considered not suitable for cisplatin-fluoropyrimidine-based dCRT. dCRT consisted of carboplatin AUC 2 and paclitaxel 50 mg/m2 (days 1, 8, 15, 22, 29) and the recommended radiation dose was 50 Gy in 25 daily fractions. We assessed overall survival, progression-free survival (PFS; overall, local and distant), proportion of patients who were failure free at the response assessment (12 weeks after dCRT), treatment compliance and toxicity. RESULTS In total, 214 patients from nine UK centres were treated between 15 February 2013 and 19 March 2019: 39.7% of patients were ≥75 years; 18.7% ≥ 80 years. Indications for weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based dCRT were comorbidities (47.2%), clinician choice (36.4%) and poor tolerance/progression on cisplatin-fluoropyrimidine induction chemotherapy (15.8%). The median overall survival was 24.28 months (95% confidence interval 20.07-30.09) and the median PFS was 16.33 months (95% confidence interval 14.29-20.96). Following treatment, 69.1% (96/139) had a combined complete response on endoscopy with non-progression (complete response/partial response/stable disease) on imaging. The 1- and 2-year overall survival rates for this patient group were 81.9% (95% confidence interval 75.6-86.8%) and 50.6% (95% confidence interval 40.5-60.0%), respectively. Thirty-three per cent (n = 70) of patients experienced at least one grade 3 + acute toxicity (grade 3/4 haematological: 10%; grade 3/4 non-haematological: 32%) and there were no treatment-related deaths. 86.9% of patients completed at least four cycles of concomitant weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based chemotherapy and planned radiotherapy was completed in 97.7% (209/214). CONCLUSION Weekly carboplatin-paclitaxel-based CRT seems to be well tolerated in elderly patients and in those with comorbidities, where cisplatin-fluoropyrimidine-based dCRT is contraindicated. Survival outcomes are comparable with cisplatin-fluoropyrimidine-based dCRT.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is an important microelement for rice and plays a key role in many physiological processes. This study assessed the physio-biochemical responses involved in biosynthesis of 2-acety-1-pyrroline (2-AP), which is a key compound in the aroma of fragrant rice, in four different fragrant rice varieties, i.e., Meixiangzhan-2, Xiangyaxiangzhan, Ruanhuayou-134, and Yunjingyou. Four concentrations (0, 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00 g L-1) of zinc chloride were applied to fragrant rice foliage at the heading stage and named CK, Zn1, Zn2 and Zn3, respectively. Our results showed that compared with CK, the Zn1, Zn2 and Zn3 treatments all significantly increased the 2-AP concentration in mature grains of the four fragrant rice genotypes. Furthermore, exogenous application of Zn not only enhanced the activities of enzymes, including proline dehydrogenase (PDH), △1-pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid synthetase (P5CS), and diamine oxidase (DAO), which are involved in 2-AP biosynthesis, but also improved the contents of the related precursors, such as Δ1-pyrroline, proline and pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid (P5C). In addition, compared to the CK treatment, the Zn2 treatment markedly increased the net photosynthetic rate of fragrant rice during the grain filling stage and increased the seed-setting rate, 1000-grain weight and grain yield in all fragrant rice genotypes. Foliar application of Zn also markedly increased the grain Zn content. In general, 1.00 g L-1 seemed to be the most suitable application concentration because the highest 2-AP content and grain weight were recorded with this treatment.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) affects crop growth and productivity by disrupting normal plant metabolism. To determinate whether ultrasonic (US) seed treatment can alleviate Cd stress in rape (Brassica napus L.), the seeds of two oilseed rape cultivars i.e., 'Youyanzao18' and 'Zaoshu104' were exposed to ultrasonic waves for 1 min at 20 KHz frequency. Seeds without US treatment were taken as control (CK). Results revealed that the germination rate of both cultivars was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in US treatment than CK only at 0 and 10 mg Cd L-1. The shoot and root length of both cultivars were significantly higher in US treatment than CK at all Cd treatments except the root length of Youyanzao18 at 50 mg Cd L-1. The fresh weight Youyanzao18 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in US than CK except for Youyanzao18 at 25 mg Cd L-1. Moreover, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities and the proline, glutathione (GSH), and soluble protein contents in Youyanzao18 were relatively higher in the US treatment than CK. The malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were prominently reduced in US treatment than CK. The pods per plant, seeds per pod and rapeseed yield were increased by 15.9, 11.4, and 16.4% in Youyanzao18 and 10.3, 9.5, and 11.5% in Zaoshu104, respectively in US treatment, compared to CK. Moreover, the contents of Cd in root, stem, leaf, rape pod shell, and rapeseeds were comparatively less in US treatment than CK whereas the Cd concentrations in different plant parts of both rape cultivars were recorded as: leaf ˃ root ˃ stem ˃ rape pod shell ˃ rapeseed. In sum, the US treatment improved the morphological growth and rapeseed yield whereas reduced the Cd accumulation in different plant parts of rapeseed under Cd contaminated soil.

Abstract
AIMS To report the outcomes of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in adults across three large centres in a non-endemic region in the era of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated in three large cancer centres with IMRT ± chemotherapy with curative intent between 2009 and 2016 were identified from institutional databases. Radiotherapy was delivered with 70 Gy in 33-35 daily fractions. A univariable analysis was carried out to evaluate the relationship of patient, tumour and treatment factors with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival. RESULTS In total, 151 patients were identified with a median follow-up of 5.2 years. The median age was 52 years (range 18-85). Seventy-five per cent were of Caucasian origin; 75% had non-keratinising tumours; Epstein Barr virus status was only available in 23% of patients; 74% of patients had stage III or IV disease; 54% of patients received induction chemotherapy; 86% of patients received concurrent chemotherapy. Five-year overall survival, PFS, local disease-free survival, regional disease-free survival and distant disease-free survival were 70%, 65%, 91%, 94% and 82%, respectively. Keratinising squamous cell carcinoma, older age, worse performance status, smoking and alcohol intake were associated with inferior overall survival and PFS. CONCLUSIONS Local, regional and distant disease control are relatively high following IMRT ± chemotherapy in a non-endemic population. There was considerable heterogeneity in terms of radiotherapy treatment and the use of chemotherapy, encouraging the development of treatment protocols and expert peer review in non-endemic regions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element for higher plants and essential for mammals. To study the effect of the foliar application of sodium selenate on fragrant rice performance, a pot experiment was conducted in Guangdong, China. At the initial heading stage, one-time foliar application of sodium selenate with concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μmol·L- 1 (named CK, Se1, Se2, Se3, Se4 and Se5, respectively) were foliar applied on two fragrant rice varieties, 'Meixiangzhan-2' and 'Xiangyaxiangzhan'. RESULTS Selenate application at the initial heading stage not only improved the grain yield of fragrant rice by increasing the seed-setting rate and grain weight, but also promoted the grain quality by increasing crude protein contents and lowering the chalky rice rate. Furthermore, Se applications enhanced the biosynthesis of 2-acetyl-1- pyrroline (2-AP), the main aromatic compound, by increasing the contents of precursors (△1- pyrroline, proline and pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid (P5C)) and the activities of enzymes (proline dehydrogenase (PRODH), △1-pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid synthetase (P5CS), and ornithine aminotransferase (OAT)) in fragrant rice. The results also showed that foliar application of sodium selenate enhanced the antioxidant system of both varieties by promoting the activities of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and reducing the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, the real-time PCR analyses depicted that foliar application of selenate up-regulated the GPX1, GPX4 and CATC transcripts. The higher antioxidative enzymatic activities might strength the stress resistant to ensure the stability of yield in fragrant rice form abiotic stress. CONCLUSIONS Foliar applications of sodium selenate at the initial heading stage increased the grain 2-AP content by enhancing the biosynthesis-related enzymes and precursors. The grain yield and quality of fragrant rice also increased due to selenate application. Furthermore, foliar application of selenate promoted the activities of enzymes such as POD, SOD and CAT and up-regulated the expression of gene GPX4, GPX1 and CATC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Water (W) and nitrogen (N) management generally cause regulations in the 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP) accumulation in fragrant rice; nevertheless, the feasibility of such management strategies at booting stage in improving 2AP accumulation has not been examined in details. METHODS Field experiments were conducted in the early season (March-July) and repeated in the late season (July-November) in 2013. The treatments were applied urea (90 kg ha- 1), calcium super phosphate (90 kg ha- 1) and potassium chloride (195 kg ha- 1) as basal fertilizer, and urea (65 kg ha- 1) at tillering stage. Three N levels i.e., 0 kg N ha- 1 (N1), 30 kg N ha- 1 (N2), and 60 kg N ha- 1 (N3) and three water levels i.e., W1 treatment (well-watered treatment with water layer of 2-4 cm), W2 treatment (soil water potential was - 15 ± 5 kPa), and W3 treatment (soil water potential was - 25 ± 5 kPa) at booting stage was set up for three rice varieties i.e., Nongxiang 18, Yungengyou 14 and Basmati. The grain yield, head milled rice yield, 2AP contents and the biochemical parameters related to 2AP formation were investigated. RESULTS Result indicated that W and N dynamics regulated the grain yield, head milled rice yield, and 2AP contents in brown rice across three varieties. The N2 and N3 treatment significantly increased the 2AP contents in brown rice by 9.54% and 11.95%, and 8.88% and 32.54% in the early and the late season, respectively; improved grain yield and head milled rice yield. The W3 treatment improved grain yield, head milled rice yield and 2AP content. Significant W and N interaction effect on 2AP content in brown rice was detected, where the W3 N3 treatment showed the strongest interaction regarding improvement of 2AP contents in brown rice. The 2AP accumulation and its related biochemical parameters and their relationships in different plant tissues at different growth stages under W and N treatments had also been assessed. The 2AP content, P5C content and DAO activity during grain filling periods was highly related to the 2AP content in brown rice. CONCLUSION This study revealed that the 60 kg N ha- 1 coupled with - 25 ± 5 kPa treatment showed the best positive effects on yield and aroma in fragrant rice, suggested that water and nitrogen management at booting stage can improve grain yield and fragrance in fragrant rice. However, further study to evaluate the metabolic and molecular basis of 2AP accumulation in fragrant rice is needed.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
The rapid increase of patients of heart failure (HF) is a major health burden worldwide. Most importantly is the need to develop innovative new drugs for treatment of HF, such as sacubitril/valsartan which in part functions by enhancing the natriuretic peptides (NPs). We engineered NPA7 as a novel 30 amino acid bispecific designer peptide which activates the particulate guanylyl cyclase A receptor (pGC-A)/cGMP and for which the NPs both ANP and BNP are ligands and the Mas-receptor (MasR)/cAMP pathways for Angiotensin 1–7 (Ang1–7) is the endogenous ligand. We previously reported that acute intravenous (IV) administration of NPA7 shows cardiorenal protective and renin-aldosterone suppressing actions that go beyond the native peptides, BNP or Ang 1–7, which may have therapeutic potential for HF.
Purpose
To support the clinical development of NPA7 as a potential therapy in HF which promotes NP and MasR pathways, we investigated the actions and stability of subcutaneous (SQ) administration of NPA7 in normal canines. We also defined NPA7's peptide stability and metabolites in canine plasma.
Methods
Plasma and urinary cGMP, cardiorenal and renin-aldosterone responses to SQ injection (10μg/kg) were determined over 4 hours in normal canines (n=5) in vivo. Ex vivo, we established stability of NPA7 and key metabolites in canine serum using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Data are expressed as mean ± SEM. * P<0.05 vs. BL.
Results
In vivo, SQ NPA7 resulted in a sustained increase at 2 hours in plasma (BL: 10±3; 120 min: 30±6* pmol/ml) and urinary (BL: 1033±198; 120 min: 5792±857* pmol/min) cGMP, GFR (BL: 29±6; 120 min: 70±12* ml/min) and sodium excretion (BL: 18±10; 120 min: 144±33* ueq/min). We observed a gradual reduction in BP at 60 min (BL: 109±4; 60 min: 99±7* mmHg) with a sustained decrease in PCWP at 4 hours (BL: 5±0.9; 240 min: 3.1±0.6* mmHg). SQ NPA7 also suppressed plasma renin and aldosterone up to 3 hours after SQ injection. LC-MS revealed that NPA7 was highly stable with both the pGC-A and MasR activating moieties intact ex vivo in canine serum with a disappearance time of 2 hours. We also identified 2 major NPA7 metabolites NPA71–27 and NPA71–28.
Conclusions
SQ NPA7 possesses cGMP activating, cardiac unloading, diuretic, natriuretic, and renin-aldosterone suppressing actions in normal canines. NPA7 is also highly stable in serum. These studies support SQ administration as an effective delivery strategy for NPA7, a first-in-class innovative bispecific dual pGC-A/MasR activator now in preclinical development for HF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of ganglioside [monostalotetra-hexosylganglioside (GM1)] on the expressions of caspase-3 and nerve growth factor (NGF) in rats with acute spinal cord injury (SCI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Male Sprague- Dawley (SD) rats were selected and randomly divided into Sham group, SCI group and GM1 administration group. The rats in Sham group, SCI group and GM1 group were subjected to behavioral examinations of Basso Beattie Bresnahan (BBB) and oblique-plate test at 1, 7 and 14 d after operation. The content of methylene dioxyamphetamine (MDA) and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) of every rat in each group were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Immunofluorescence staining assay was used to detect the expression levels of caspase-3 and NGF of rats in each group. The messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and protein expressions of caspase-3 and NGF of rats in Sham group, SCI group and GM1 group were detected using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting assay. RESULTS The BBB scores and the results of oblique-plate test in Sham group, SCI group and GM1 group at 1, 7 and 14 d showed that the BBB scores and the results of oblique-plate test of rats in each group were significantly decreased at 1 d after SCI, and had different degrees of recovery at 7 and 14 d after injury. The results of ELISA detection revealed that SCI group had increased content of MDA and clearly decreased activity of SOD in comparison with Sham group; at the same time, MDA content in GM1 group was overtly lower than that in SCI group, while SOD activity was enhanced evidently in GM1 group compared with that in SCI group. According to immunofluorescence assay, significantly increased expression of caspase-3 and distinctly decreased expression of NGF were found in SCI group. However, this phenomenon was significantly reversed by GM1. RT-PCR and Western blotting assay severally proved that the mRNA and protein expressions of caspase-3 were raised in SCI group and decreased clearly after the administration of GM1; while the mRNA and protein expressions of NGF was significantly reduced in SCI group and overtly elevated after the administration of GM1. ANOVA showed that there were statistically significant differences in expressions of caspase-3 and NGF among Sham group, SCI group and GM1 group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS GM1 has an evident effect on the expressions of caspase-3 and NGF in rats with acute SCI, and is able to down-regulate the expression of caspase-3 and up-regulate the expression of NGF, so as to achieve its therapeutic effect on SCI.

Abstract
Temperature is one of the critical factors affecting rice growth and yield production. This study investigated the effects of rhizosphere temperature at the tillering stage on the growth, physiological parameters and gas exchange attributes of two rice cultivars, i.e., the super rice cultivar Yuxiangyouzhan and the non-super rice cultivar Xiangyaxiangzhan, under hydroponic conditions. Three rhizosphere temperature treatments, i.e., a low-rhizosphere-temperature treatment (LT, nutrient solution at 17.5 ± 1.5 °C), an ambient-temperature treatment (AT, nutrient solution at 27.5 ± 1.5 °C), and a high-rhizosphere-temperature treatment (HT, nutrient solution at 37.5 ± 1.5 °C), were applied in this study. The results showed significant differences in most of the rice growth and physiological and gas exchange parameters as a result of cultivar and rhizosphere temperature as well as their interaction. In addition, the marked reduction in total dry weight was positively correlated with a notable reduction in plant morphological parameters, such as the fresh and dry weight of the leaves and stem sheaths, and changes in gas exchange parameters. Moreover, antioxidant reactions were active in response to high and low rhizosphere temperatures, which varied in different plant tissues. These results suggested that the super and non-super rice were sensitive to high and low rhizosphere temperatures, respectively.

Abstract
There was an increasing trend in dengue infection in Malaysia with many outbreaks that occurred in Petaling District, Selangor in 2013 - 2014. A high rise apartment in Petaling Jaya reported ten episodes of dengue outbreaks from June 2013 to June 2014. We studied the prolonged dengue hotspot at this residential complex in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and made recommendations to prevent future prolonged dengue outbreaks. This was a retrospective exploratory study by analysing secondary data on dengue outbreaks from years 2013 to 2014. Small group discussions, interview sessions with staff and site visits were carried out to obtain necessary information. Two hundred and ninety-one cases were notified during the dengue outbreaks from Epid week (EW) 25 in 2013 to EW 26 in 2014 with no mortality reported. Information entered into dengue databases might be incomplete or mixed up. Active case detection and environmental risks assessment based on cases were not carry out due to the massive outbreak. Basic information on the population in the outbreak locality was unavailable. Various control activities were carried out with varying outcomes. Community participation was poor with little cooperation from residents during health education and community-based mosquito breeding prevention activities. To ensure better management of dengue outbreaks and to prevent prolonged dengue outbreaks in the future, integrated case findings, effective control activities, extensive environmental assessment on the outbreak locality and adopting innovative community outreach initiative with sufficient staff are required to curb dengue vector.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of sodium selenate (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 105 mg kg−1) on the germination and seedling growth of Changnongjing 1 rice (Oryza sativa L.) at 25 °C and 30 °C. Low selenate concentrations induced shorter and more uniform germination periods than did ultrapure water at both temperatures. Seedlings primed with low selenate concentrations were superior to those primed with ultrapure water in terms of plant height, fresh weight, dry matter accumulation, and soluble carbohydrate and protein contents. Lower selenate concentrations (15–75 mg kg−1) induced higher chlorophyll and phenol contents in seedlings than did ultrapure water. Lower selenate concentrations also increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) contents in seedlings and significantly decreased the stress-related malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared to ultrapure water. In conclusion, rice seedling germination and growth were promoted by priming with low selenate concentrations (15–75 mg kg−1) but inhibited by priming with high selenate concentrations (90–105 mg kg−1).

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is a highly toxic metal that damages normal plant metabolism and often results in reduced crop growth and yield. To measure whether or not ultrasonic seed (US) treatment alleviates Pb stress in rice, the seeds of two rice cultivars, i.e., Guangyan1 and Huahang31, were exposed to 30 min of ultrasonic vibration and then the seedlings were transplanted to Pb-contaminated soil. Results revealed that the Pb contents in roots, stems, leaves, panicles (at heading), and brown rice (at maturity) were lower in US treatment than control (CK; without US treatment); the trend for accumulation of Pb in different plant parts was recorded as: root ˃ stems ˃ leaves ˃ panicles ˃ brown rice in both rice cultivars. Overall, the Pb contents in the brown rice of Huahang31 were higher than those in Guangyan1. Moreover, the contents of proline and soluble protein as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were significantly higher while the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were significantly reduced in US treatment compared to CK. The effective panicle number, seed set percentage, grains per panicle, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were increased by 8.9%, 5.3%, 6.8%, 4.4%, and 26.6% in Guangyan1 and 3.2%, 5.7%, 5.7%, 5.0%, and 24.2% in Huahang31, respectively in US treatment compared to CK. Hence, seed treatment with ultrasonic waves could improve rice performance and reduce brown rice Pb accumulation under Pb-polluted soils.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between serum lipid level and depression in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Methods: A total of 348 patients with CHF from the First department of Cardiology of the people's hospital of Shaanxi province from September 2016 to June 2017 were included. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) was used to evaluate the degree of depression and some related clinical data were tested. The serum lipid level and depression scores in the patients were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, and Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the confounding factors of depression. Results: There was significant difference in the proportion of depression between normal serum lipid group and dyslipidemia group (P=0.044). Pearson correlation analysis showed that depression score was linearly related to total cholesterol (r=0.326, P<0.001) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (r=0.354, P<0.001), and Logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting for age, BMI, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, total bilirubin, albumin, B type natriuretic peptide, total cholesterol (OR=3.523, P=0.007) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR=0.205, P=0.041) were associated with depression in CHF patients. Conclusion: Total cholesterol can increase the risk of depression, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol can reduce the risk of depression in CHF patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Interleukin-22 (IL-22), mainly produced by CD4+ T-helper subtypes and innate lymphoid cells at barrier surfaces, is found to involve in several diseases, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, peri-implantitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. The purpose of this study was to investigate histological changes and the levels of interleukin-22, interleukin-22 receptor 1 (IL-22R1) and interleukin-22-binding protein (IL-22BP) in experimental periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty male 8-week-old Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated to six groups of 10 rats each. In the periodontitis groups, experimental periodontitis was established and the rats were killed on days 3, 5, 7, 11 and 15 after ligation, while the rats without ligation were killed on day 0, representing the healthy control group (day 0 group). Histopathologic changes were detected by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and alveolar bone loss was determined by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining was used to investigate osteoclast formation. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry were used to investigate the expression and location of IL-22, IL-22R1 and IL-22BP in gingival tissues. RESULTS H&E staining showed increasingly severe destruction of the epithelial layer between day 3 and day 7, and the hyperplasia of pocket epithelium and the formation of periodontal pockets could be detected from day 11 to day 15. Micro-CT indicated an exponential increase in alveolar bone loss from day 3 to day 11 (P < .01). Bone resorption tended to be stationary after this period. TRAP staining showed that the number of multinucleate osteoclasts peaked at day 3 (P < .001, compared with day 0) and decreased at subsequent time points between day 5 and day 15. IL-22BP was expressed strongly under steady-state conditions in epithelial cells. IL-22-positive cells could be clearly observed both in the epithelial layer and around the lamina propria, whereas IL-22R1 was mainly localized in the epithelial layer of the damage period. Real-time qPCR revealed up-regulation of IL-22 and IL-22R1, as well as down-regulation of IL-22BP in gingival tissues during the destructive phase of periodontitis. CONCLUSION This study shows the expression and localization of IL-22, IL-22R1 and IL-22BP, as well as the relevant histopathological alterations during the development of experimental periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system (CNS). Interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-17A may play important roles in the pathogenesis of this disease. High-mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1), a small but highly conserved ubiquitous protein, is recognized to be a potent innate inflammatory mediator that can activate the nuclear factor light chain enhancer of activated B cells and release cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-17A when released extracellularly. However, whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) HMGB1 levels are altered in anti-NMDAR encephalitis is still unclear. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether a correlation exists between the CSF concentrations of HMGB1 and IL-6 and IL-17A in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. We also sought to assess whether HMGB1 influences the clinical outcomes in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. METHODS Thirty-three patients with anti-NMDAR antibodies and 38 controls were recruited. CSF HMGB1 was measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The main clinical outcomes were evaluated using the modified Rankin scale (mRS). The data were extracted using microarray analysis software. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Our results showed significant increases in CSF HMGB1, IL-6, and IL-17A (P < .05) in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients. But between 3 months' mRS scores in anti-NMDAR encephalitis patients and CSF data, there was no correlation. Our study suggests that HMGB1 CSF levels are increased in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and reflect the underlying neuroinflammatory process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that may induce activation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and lead to the destruction of periodontal tissue. The level of EMMPRIN glycosylation might be involved in this process. This study aims to investigate the role of EMMPRIN glycosylation in regulating MMP-2 and MMP-9 during the progression of periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Gingival tissues were collected from patients with chronic periodontitis and from patients undergoing crown-lengthening procedures (healthy gingival tissue). Tissues were used for immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence. A human immortalized oral epithelial cell (HIOEC) line was stably transfected by an N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-V (GnT-V) RNA interference (RNAi) lentivirus to suppress EMMPRIN glycosylation. Gene silence efficiency was detected by western blot, quantitative real-time PCR and immunofluorescence (IF) staining. An HIOEC/human gingival fibroblast (HGF) co-culture model and an individual culture model were used in this study. After exposure of cells to Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (Pg. LPS), the expression of EMMPRIN, MMP-2 and MMP-9 were assessed by western blot, quantitative real-time PCR and IF, and the secretion of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were detected by gelatin-degradation assays. RESULTS Compared with the periodontally healthy group, patients with periodontitis showed increased expression of EMMPRIN on the gingival epithelial cell membrane. GnT-V, a key regulator of EMMPRIN glycosylation, was co-expressed with EMMPRIN in gingival epithelial cells in patients with periodontitis. Knockdown of GnT-V reduced the level of EMMPRIN glycosylation in HIOECs. Furthermore, in the HIOEC/HGF co-culture model, stimulation with Pg. LPS (10 μg/mL, 4 hours) promoted EMMPRIN glycosylation and increased the activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9, while suppression of EMMPRIN glycosylation by GnT-V knockdown reduced the synthesis and activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 under Pg. LPS stimulation. Moreover, the gelatin-degradation assay showed that inhibition of EMMPRIN glycosylation suppressed the Pg. LPS-induced degradation of gelatin in the co-culture model. CONCLUSION We conclude that EMMPRIN glycosylation participates in the regulation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 production through mediating the interaction of HIOECs and HGFs. Inhibiting EMMPRIN glycosylation can reduce the activation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and suppress the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the HIOEC/HGF co-culture model. Therefore, this study suggests that EMMPRIN glycosylation may affect the host immune-inflammatory response by regulating MMPs in periodontitis.

Abstract
Zearalenone (ZEA) is a nonsteroidal estrogenic mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species. The exposure risk to humans and animals is the consumption of contaminated food and animal feeds. The aim of this study was to investigate ZEA-induced effects and its tumorigenic mechanism in TM3 cells (mouse Leydig cells). Cell proliferation, apoptosis, and gap junction intercellular communication (GJIC) were assessed in this study. Results showed that low concentrations of ZEA could significantly promote the growth of TM3 cells. The percentage of cell distribution was decreased significantly in G1/G0 phase and was increased significantly in S phase with 10 and 20 μg/L of ZEA for 72 h ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01). The expressions of cyclin D1 and Cdk4 were significantly increased in the exposure groups compared with the control group ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the apoptosis was significantly decreased in 10 and 20 μg/L groups ( p < 0.01), and the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 protein level was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. The protein levels of proto-oncogene c-Myc, c-Jun, and c-Fos were significantly elevated and the protein levels of anti-oncogene p53 and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) were decreased obviously compared with the control group ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01). ZEA affected the expressions of connexins and inhibited the activity of GJIC. These results demonstrated that ZEA can disturb the dynamic balance between proliferation and apoptosis and causes abnormal regulation of oncogenes, GJIC, and connexins in TM3 cells, which may easily induce the translation of normal cells into tumor cells.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) caused interruptions with normal plant metabolism, crop yield losses and quality issues are of great concern. This study assessed the physio-biochemical responses, yield and grain quality traits and Pb distribution proportions in three different fragrant rice cultivars i.e., Meixiangzhan-2, Xinagyaxiangzhan and Basmati-385. Plants were exposed to 400, 800, and 1,200 ppm of Pb while pots without Pb were taken as control (0 ppm). Our results showed that Pb toxicity significantly (P < 0.05) reduced photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll contents and carotenoids) and inducted oxidative stress with increased production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malanodialdehyde (MDA) and leaves leachates; while such effects were more apparent in Xinagyaxiangzhan than other two rice cultivars. Pb stress differentially affected the production protein, proline and soluble sugars; however the production rates were higher at heading stage (HS) than maturity stage (MS). Furthermore, Pb stress altered superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidases (POD), catalases (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidases (APX) activities and glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) production in all rice cultivars at both HS and MS. All Pb levels reduced the yield and yield components of all rice cultivars; nonetheless such reductions were observed highest in Xinagyaxiangzhan (69.12%) than Meixiangzhan-2 (58.05%) and Basmati-385 (46.27%) and resulted in grain quality deterioration. Significant and positive correlations among rice yields with productive tillers/pot and grains per panicle while negative with sterility percentage were also observed. In addition, all rice cultivars readily taken up the Pb contents from soil to roots and transported upward in different proportions with maximum in roots followed by stemss, leaves, ears and grains. Higher proportions of Pb contents in above ground plant parts in Xinagyaxiangzhan possibly lead to maximum losses in this cultivar than other two cultivars; while less damage in Basmati-385 might be related to strong anti-oxidative defense system and lower proportions of Pb contents in its aerial parts.

Abstract
Nitrogen availability and illumination intensity are two key factors which affect rice growth. However, their influences on total nitrogen accumulation, photosynthetic rate, root morphologies, and yields are not fully understood. We conducted two field experiments to (1) evaluate the effects of shading under different N treatments on photosynthetic parameters, root morphologies, total nutrient accumulation, and grain yields of rice; and (2) elucidate the relationship between total nutrient accumulation and root morphologies under different shading conditions and nitrogen treatments. Three nitrogen rates, three shading treatments, and three different rice cultivars were used in two field experiments. Double shading during the grain-filling stage decreased total nutrient accumulation, altered root morphological characteristics, and decreased yields in rice. There were also significant interaction effects between nitrogen and shading on photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and total root length, root superficial area, and root volume. Significant interactions were found among cultivars and shading for photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate. Correlation analysis revealed that total nitrogen accumulation (TNA) and potassium accumulation (TKA) were significantly positively correlated with total root length, root superficial area, and root volume. N application could alleviate the detrimental effects of shading on total nutrient accumulation and grain yield in rice.

Abstract
Micro-nutrient application is essential for normal plant growth while a little is known about manganese (Mn)-induced regulations in morpho-physiological attributes, aroma formation and enzyme involved in 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) biosynthesis in aromatic rice. Present study aimed to examine the influence of four levels of Mn i.e., Mn1 (100 mg MnSO4 pot(-1)), Mn2 (150 mg MnSO4 pot(-1)), Mn3 (200 mg MnSO4 pot(-1)), and Mn4 (250 mg MnSO4 pot(-1)) on the growth, yield formation, quality characters, rice aroma and enzyme involved in 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline biosynthesis in two fragrant rice cultivars i.e., Meixiangzhan and Nongxiang 18. Pots without Mn application were served as control (Ck). Each pot contained 15 kg of soil. Effects on agronomic characters, quality attributes, 2-AP contents and enzymes involved in 2-AP biosynthesis have been studied in early and late season rice. Results depicted that Mn improved rice growth, yield and related characters, and some quality attributes significantly. It further up-regulated proline, pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid (P5C) (precursors of 2-AP), soluble proteins and activities of proline dehydrogenase (ProDH), Δ(1) pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid synthetase (P5CS) ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) that led to enhanced 2-AP production in rice grains. Moreover, higher Mn levels resulted in increased grain Mn contents in both rice cultivars. Along with growth and yield improvement, Mn application significantly improved rice aromatic contents. Overall, Nongxiang 18 accumulated more 2-AP contents than Meixiangzhan in both seasons under Mn application. This study further explored the importance of Mn in rice aroma formation and signifies that micro-nutrients can play significant roles in rice aroma synthesis; however, intensive studies at molecular levels are still needed to understand the exact mechanisms of Mn to improve rice aroma formation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide the epidemiology, resistance pattern, and characterization of integrons in Shigella flexneri isolated between 2001 and 2011 in Jiangsu Province. METHOD A total of 624 strains of S. flexneri were collected from both outpatients and inpatients in hospitals in Jiangsu Province from January 2001 to December 2011. The Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to perform the antimicrobial susceptibility test. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used in the detection of integrons. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was applied in the homology studies. RESULT Serotype 2a accounted for the largest proportion in S. flexneri, namely 26.4 %. Notably, an increasing trend was detected in the resistance to common antimicrobial agents during the period 2001-2011. In recent years, more than 80.0 % isolates of S. flexneri have proved to be resistant to ampicillin, nalidixic acid, and tetracycline. The positive rates of class 1, class 2, and the atypical class 1 integrons in S. flexneri are 69.3 %, 87.8 %, and 89.2 % respectively. Most integrons detected in our research carry genes encoding resistance to trimethoprim and streptomycin. CONCLUSION Antimicrobial resistance in S. flexneri has demonstrated a continuous rising trend in Jiangsu Province. A high prevalence of integrons and gene cassettes play an important role in the transmission of drug resistance in S. flexneri. Effective measures are urgently needed to control the spread of multi-drug-resistant S. flexneri, and more continuing active surveillance of antimicrobial resistance should be established worldwide, especially in developing countries.

Abstract
Aromatic rice is highly prized by consumers worldwide due to its special aromatic character. 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) is considered to be the single most important volatile compound responsible for aroma in aromatic rice. The present study demonstrated the effects of 2-AP, zinc (Zn) and lanthanum (La) on the 2-AP concentration of detached aromatic rice panicles in vitro. Detached panicles from three well-known aromatic cultivars, Guixiangzhan, Pin14, and Pin 15, were cultured separately in basic culture medium supplemented with 2-AP, Zn and La, and 2-AP concentrations were assessed at 7 and 14 days after culture (DAC). The results show that supplementation of 2-AP, Zn and La in the basic culture medium significantly increases the accumulation of proline. 2-AP concentration and the activity of proline dehydrogenase (ProDH) were also increased in rice grains. Zn concentrations were also found to be higher when Zn was added to the basic culture medium, and La concentrations in grains were too low to be measured. Additionally, grain 2-AP concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with proline concentrations, ProDH activities in grains and 2-AP in culture medium. In summary, higher grain 2-AP concentrations might be due to Zn- and La-induced increases in proline concentrations and ProDH activities, as well as the direct uptake and transportation of 2-AP from the culture medium. Furthermore, application of both Zn and La might be helpful for improving aroma formation in rice. However, interactions of both these elements with the complex process of 2-AP formation remain to be explored.

Abstract
Abstract. The Erhualian (EHL) pig possesses significantly lower growth rates and higher adipose deposition compared with the Large White (LW) pig. To further understand the mechanism of breed lipid deposition difference at the early postnatal age, we employed an animal model of EHL and LW pigs at weaning age to compare the lipid metabolism differences in subcutaneous fat. The result showed that serum triglyceride in EHL was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of LW. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ protein level in EHL was significantly higher (P < 0.01) though CCTTA enhancer-binding protein level demonstrated no change compared with LW pigs. Hormone sensitive lipase, adipose tissue triglyceride lipase mRNA expression and the lipase activity were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in EHL. Uncoupling protein-2 protein content was significantly lower (P < 0.01) in EHL than that in LW pigs. We first cloned the nucleotide sequence of Zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) with 1090 bp and found that both ZAG mRNA expression and protein level in EHL pigs was significantly lower (P < 0.01) than that of LW pigs. β3 adrenergic receptor mRNA expression in EHL pigs was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that of LW pigs, though tumour necrosis factor α gene expression demonstrated no significant difference. Therefore, the significant breed lipid metabolism difference in subcutaneous fat exists at an early postnatal age between EHL and LW pigs, and this difference may originate from two causes including the increased lipid synthesis and reduced lipid mobilization in EHL pigs compared with LW pigs.
